Book Description
More than any of their contemporaries, Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron are challenging the boundaries between architecture and art. Natural History explores that challenge, examining how the work of this formidable pair has drawn upon the art of both past and present, and brought architecture into dialogue with the art of our time. Echoing an encyclopedia, this publication reflects the natural history museum structure of the exhibition which it accompanies, organized by the Canadian Centre for Architecture. Models and projects by Herzog & de Meuron, as well as by other artists, are structured around six thematic portfolios that suggest an evolutionary history of the architects' work: Appropriation & Reconstruction, Transformation & Alienation, Stacking & Compression, Imprints & Moulds, Interlocking Spaces, and Beauty & Atmosphere. Each section is introduced with a statement from Herzog, and more than 20 artists, scholars, and architects have contributed essays, including Carrie Asman, Georges Didi-Huberman, Kurt W. Forster, Boris Groys, Ulrike Meyer Stump, Peggy Phelan, Thomas Ruff, Rebecca Schneider, Adolf Max Vogt, and Jeff Wall.
A building is a building. It cannot be read like a book; it doesn't have any credits, subtitles or labels like pictures in a gallery. In that sense, we are absolutely anti-representational. The strength of our buildings is the immediate, visceral impact they have on a visitor. --Jacques Herzog
Edited by Philip Ursprung. Contributions by Fernando Romero, Carrie Asman, Boris Groys, Gernot Bohme, Jeff Wall, Thomas Ruff, Alfred Richterich, Adolph Max Vogt, Alejandro Zaera-Polo, Reinhold Hohl, Petros Koumoutsakos, Albert Lutz, Christian Muoeix, Hurzeler, Catherine, Rebecca Schneider and Remy Zaugg. Foreword by Phyllis Lambert. Introduction by Kurt W. Forster.
Hardcover, 480 pages, 300 color and 200 b&w illustrations

art of H & DeM.......2007-03-16
H & DeM have always been influenced by art & you can even argue that their body of work could be an entire exhibiton. This book follows up some of their selected projects with interviews of the architects themselves as well as the collaborative artists. It does well to probe into theie unique process of design & actualization of their work. Jaques Herzog says that Art is roughly 20 years ahead of architecture. This vivid book clearly shows the great accomplishments by two men who are constantly trying to even up the odds between art & architecture through inspirations from the natural world.
layers of history, time, artifacts, translated into architecture.......2006-06-03
I don't think this is an "object book" but a book in which herzog & de meuron want readers to understand their work like an archaelogical history. you cannot flip through it like an photographic architectural essay, but you really have to sit down, have a cup of coffee/tea, and really read the book, think about what they are saying, how other ideas such as art, history, materials, cultural, industrial changes, and etc. are interacting to their architectural process. certainly, they have the depth in their thoughts to publish a book that doesn't depend on photographs/architectural drawings. quite refreshing.
Herzog & De Meuron: Natural History.......2003-04-11
Another object book with content that matches the originality of the design. Herzog & De Meuron, the Basel-based architects, are best known for their art museums, but also for creating buildings that are works of art--even when the program is as mundane as a railroad signal box. This companion to the recent CCA exhibition is an anthology of interviews, stimulating essays by artists and clients, and pictures of objects that have inspired them, in addition to an illustrated catalogue of their 200 buildings and projects. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)

The Best Book ..........2000-05-14
Probably this is the best book I've seen on the works of Herzog & De Meuron. This book provides detailed information on the projects and finished buildings, asweel as project drawings and coments by the architects themselves. Every project is profoundly illustrated and commented (6-7 pages per building). Not very commonly, the plans and sections have reference to their presentation scale. The text by Gerard Mack is satistying (although not the best thing in the book), but having everything you need to judge for yourself (excelent photographs, plans and drawings), you hardly need any explanation. For the ones wanting the whole information, all the volumes of this series come with every project and building by the office, indexed in an appendix with one or two images and a short text. Plus the design is simple and beautiful and the information is right where you need it. If you really like this team of swiss architects' work, this book is a good choice.

Book Description
In the Aoyama district of Tokyo, a mixed-use neighborhood of low-rise buildings where not a square meter of land has been left unoccupied, the Swiss architecture team of Herzog & de Meuron has built a new store for Prada. In this chunky, silvery book, they meticulously illustrate the creative process that led to the realization of "a house and a plaza," a tall and narrow kaleidoscope-like structure that houses a two-story retail space and multiple levels of offices, backed by an outdoor space for the public--a rarity in crowded Tokyo. The finished structure, encased in a visually porous shell or skin, is as decorative as it is architectural--or as architectural as it is decorative--and is both metaphorically and literally linked to its surrounding environment, and to the idea of the garment. Here is the story of a theoretically and structurally complex building told lovingly and simply by its architects, through words, models, sketches, photographs, and architectural renderings.

New Book.......2006-07-30
I am generally happy about the book, except when I am buying a 100 dollars book I will expect more from it, in particular in this situation, the back of book has a lot of scratches... certainly it won't affect the content whatsoever, but this is a book designed and made to be pure white with shinny silver pattern. That is the only drawback.

The Un-Private House exhibition is only the second significant exploration of residential architecture lodged by the Museum of Modern Art, and the first one was way back in 1934. This book is well timed and should prove fascinating to any and all who are interested in considering the infinity of ways in which we might live.
This writer's favorite object of contemplation from the book is located in Tokyo and is called the "Curtain Wall House." It stands three stories tall, all with mostly open floor plans on a corner lot. An enormous curtain of fabric hangs along the two sides of the house that face the corner of the lot. In order to close the house in and make it private, one must draw the curtain around the multistory space. When the curtain is open, all the workings of the home are revealed. This is an extreme dwelling with an apparent simplicity that confounds its real meaning.
The Un-Private House is the catalog for a show of the same name at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Terence Riley, chief curator of architecture and design at the museum, put the show together and provides all of the text for the book. He suggests that for centuries one of the highest functions of the single-family home has been seclusion from the public realm. Here Riley has compiled a fabulous collection of cutting-edge solutions to this condition. --Loren E. Baldwin
Book Description
How would you build a house for a cyborg? The Un-Private House examines this and other questions confronting domestic architecture as the 20th century turns into the 21st. Changes in family structure, shifting concepts of privacy and domesticity, the home as workplace, and the revolution in communications and media have created totally new relationships between exterior and interior worlds. Photographs, plans, and drawings present 26 projects by architectural firms in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Their innovations include spectacular new materials, including "smart skins" through which houses themselves transmit information, as well as structural forms. The houses presented here, and their architects, are not only reconfiguring the domestic landscape but also launching the first architectural debates of the new century.
Customer Reviews:
The Avant Garde.......2002-08-23
An amazing book of an equally amazing exhibition. The book continues where the exhibition left off, questioning what is private and what is not in each of the houses. More than that, the reader should look at each house and the "architectural letter" that it claims to write. Koolhaas' house is a Corbusian critique with a Miesian base. Xavier's house si definately Corbu, the slow house is a slug....and more. Each is an individual criticism on modern architecture and/or on the state of architecture today.
A note:
This is the most comprehensive list of architects that we should look out for....and are the worlds' best. Also if anyone can understand each of these projects, he has understood 80% of architecture today....(but that is if he "reads" each of the houses :-) Each house is prototypical of the architect's interests and what drives him.....see the house and you will understand all his other projects.
BTW get that Menil house out of there. There is no letter he is writing.....
changing lifestyles influence home design.......2000-06-16
Terrence Riley's introduction to the museum of modern art show's "The Unprivate House" sets up a great framework for categorizing the architectural intent of the 26 examples of residential design represented in this show. Riley reminds us that historically privacy was not always associated with dwellings. Just when we may have become committed to private dwellings, this book challenges that notion and asks us to consider the reality of our revolution in communication and media, complex multi-generational housing needs, and the fact that many homes actually house only a single person. This book provokes the question; what is the character of the housing that will best suit our changing times? Each of the examples challenges our thinking in some way concerning the design of residences today; e.g. should a mixed-use work/home space be clearly divided into distinct sections-even in distinct architectural materials or forms- or should these functions merge together, as is the case in the house designed for wall street currency traders (they even have a video monitor above their jacuzzi). Privacy is challenged to the greatest degree in the structure that closes itself off from the street with a literal "curtain wall." A perceived building line is virtually non- existent when the curtains are open.

Book Description
A fascinating architectural study in museum design and urban planning.
Designed by the internationally renowned Swiss firm of Herzog & de Meuron, winners of the 2001 Pritzker Prize, the new de Young Museum in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park is a stunning architectural tour de force. This book documents the complex five-year process that resulted in an outstanding contribution to contemporary museum architecture.
Founded by San Francisco Chronicle publisher Michael de Young, the museum originated in the Midwinter International Exposition of 1894 and grew to become the city's largest art museum. Its superb permanent collection includes the arts of Africa, Oceania, and traditional cultures of the Americas; American painting and sculpture from the colonial period to the present; and both Western and non-Western textiles.
After the de Young was damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the museum's fateand the decision to replace the old building with a new museum on the same sitebecame the focus of intense public debate. How Herzog & de Meuron, in cooperation with the San Francisco firm of Fong & Chan Architects and Oakland-based landscape designer Walter Hood, responded to the challenge of creating a building in harmony with its park setting is an important theme of the story.
Lavishly illustrated with color photographs as well as plans, drawings, and models, the book traces the architects' creative process in striking detail. The new de Young is significant as Herzog & de Meuron's first major building in North America and as the first museum the architects have designed from the ground up. Reflecting its surroundings, the building is clad entirely in a skin of dimpled and perforated, naturally oxidized copper panels, whose abstract pattern was distilled from manipulated photographs of the park's tree canopy. With its elegant, twisting tower rising above the tree line, providing visitors with dramatic views, the de Young is a superlative work of architecture and a handsome tribute to the city of San Francisco. 250 illustrations, 200 in color.

Book Description
Almost four years since its initial appearance, Hans Ibelings' essay on the new tendency towards abstract, neutral architecture has lost none of its relevance. His identification and examination of the last word in modern architecture of the post-war International Style stands strong in projects by OMA, Jean Nouvel, Dominique Perrault, Herzog & de Meuron, and Toyo Ito, and is well understood in relation to one of the dominant forces of the present time: globalization. This enlarged edition of Supermodernism includes a new final chapter in which Ibelings charts the latest examples of supermodernism, as well as a revised introduction and conclusion in which he responds to the numerous reactions his provocative stance has triggered.

Worth it.......2007-08-14
This is an essential text if one wishes to be involved in a contemporary discussion in architecture. It opposes the Jenck's iconic idealism. I am constantly referencing this text in graduate studies in architecture.

It would be a good idea, for some of the customer reviewers on here, if they first learned what reviewing books means. For example, the author of the immediately preceding review thinks this book is bad -- deserving only one star -- because the bookseller has not delivered it to him yet. How sad...
