Book Description

The post-Ajaxian Web 2.0 world of wikis, folksonomies, and mashups makes well-planned information architecture even more essential. How do you present large volumes of information to people who need to find what they're looking for quickly? This classic primer shows information architects, designers, and web site developers how to build large-scale and maintainable web sites that are appealing and easy to navigate.

The new edition is thoroughly updated to address emerging technologies -- with recent examples, new scenarios, and information on best practices -- while maintaining its focus on fundamentals. With topics that range from aesthetics to mechanics, Information Architecture for the World Wide Web explains how to create interfaces that users can understand right away. Inside, you'll find:

How do you document the rich interfaces of web applications? How do you design for multiple platforms and mobile devices? With emphasis on goals and approaches over tactics or technologies, this enormously popular book gives you knowledge about information architecture with a framework that allows you to learn new approaches -- and unlearn outmoded ones.

4 out of 5 stars Good enough.......2007-09-19

This is a perfectly good resource, if you're looking for the theoretical underpinnings of how IA should work. I was, however, looking for more specifically technical information, along the lines of algorithms and integration techniques. For this I ended up going with Programming Collective Intelligence: Building Smart Web 2.0 Applications, which is more geared in that direction. Again, if IA is your whole intention, then this is a great resource, but if you're looking for technical detail, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars A lifesaver.......2007-06-22

As project manager, I was in a bind when our contract information architect failed to understand the complexities of our matrixed business model and client base. Rosenfeld's book helped me design a IA for our 700 page HTML site that has since been described as simple, intuitive, a no-brainer. What great compliments!

The book describes basic theories of IA in general (i.e. book indexes and tables of contents, libraries, etc.) and the pros and cons of different organization, labeling, and navigation systems. Then Rosenfeld advises on presenting IA to management, etc., managing expectations (yours and others), and gives detailed examples of IA strategies online.

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing Title (3rdEd).......2007-06-16

In "Part I - Intro to IA," obviously the basics are covered, like what exactly is IA? What does an Information Architect do? After reading this title, I would define an Information Architect as a glorified content manager. Someone that occupies the realm between UI designer and DB engineer.

Google is pretty good at finding information for us on the vast Internet, but there is a long way to go. I believe these authors make a valid point that IA will become increasingly relevant. In fact, I wouldn't doubt that in the future you will actually be able to obtain a BS in IA. Nonetheless, IA is around us everyday when we use technology no matter what we want call it.

The elements that make up IA are covered in "Part II - Basic Principles of IA." The basis of IA is the interaction or retrieval of information in terms of organization systems, labeling systems, navigation systems, search systems, thesauri, controlled vocabularies, and metadata. What this basically means is, how do we categorize our data so that it makes sense, is easy to navigate and search, and is relevant or adaptable according to our users' vocabularies.

"Part III - Process and Methodology" helps one plan a path to your IA goals. For instance, developing a research management team to discuss such goals, your target audiences, functionality/deficiencies of your current IA system, and integrating other software, such as your customer management system (CMS).

My favorite topic here is the detailed discussion of "building vocabularies." This is something everybody needs to constantly perfect. An example of this is, two people can search for the same thing using two different criteria. How can can we build a vocabulary system that recognizes that?

Many research tools are discussed. My favorite technique, and it's so simple, is card sorting. Get some blank cards (20-25) and write on them the headings from categories, subcategories, and content within your site. Ask a user to sort this stack of cards into piles that make sense to him and have him label those cards using post-it notes. Make sure to tell them to think-out-loud and be sure to take notes. This will give you an idea of how one would "travel" through your site, what is relevant, and what should not be on your homepage, etc.

The authors take the reader through the process of the IA development cycle, from concept, to getting managers to buy-in, to the implementation and administration of the system; very thorough.

The hands-on aspects of IA are explained in "Part IV - IA in Practice." One thing I found insightful was how one could pursue an official education in the area of IA, albeit there is no such degree. To gain a competitive advantage, the authors suggest obtaining a degree in Library and Information Science (LIS) or Human-Computer Interaction (HCI).

At the end of chapter 15, there is a list of position titles making up an ideal IA team.
This list may prove helpful for potential readers to get a better understanding of what IA is comprised of.

1) Strategy Architect - responsible for overall design goals and integration

2) Thesaurus Designer - develops classification schemes, controlled vocabularies, and thesauri

3) Controlled Vocabulary Manager - manages the evolution of controlled vocabularies and coordinates the indexing specialists team

4) Indexing Specialist - tags content and services with controlled vocabulary metadata

5) Interaction Designer - creates navigation schemes and page layouts with a focus on user interaction

6) IA Software Analyst - links the IA and IT teams, focusing on ways to leverage software to create, manage, and drive the user experience

7) IA Usability Engineer - focuses on intersection of usability and IA by conducting studies that isolate IA elements, such as category labels or metadata.

8) Cartographer - converts patterns in content, structure, and usage into maps, guides, indexes, and other useful navigational tools.

9) Search Analyst - leads the design, improvement, and ongoing analysis of search system.

"PART V - IA in the Organization" was a little dry for my tastes and irrelevant to me. May be very helpful for someone in a large bureaucratic organization that wants to implement their IA concepts.

The moral of the story is that "site builders" must employ multiple info retrieval methods and tightly integrate them. Everyone searches, browses, scans, and finds info differently; accommodate them.

This book is very comprehensive and even deals with the politics of IA. To me, the book gets a little long at times, but if your life evolves around information somehow, this is an essential read.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent reference.......2007-06-12

The topic of the Polar Bear is very defined and focused, and the book reflects this. It's a bit dry - reads much like stereo instructions - but for someone who is dedicated to exploring content and information architecture in depth, there's simply no better reference.

I wouldn't call this a good primer, but I'd definitely recommend it for more advanced reading, and definitely as a reference book.

1 out of 5 stars Very biased book.......2007-06-02

In general, this book contains some useful yet common sense information. This book is more about how to become a talker than a worker. I read through and found the first half confirmed my experience and the second half is a bust. If you want to become an office politician, this is a must have.

Book Description

All web sites have an architecture, whether you design one or not-just as every building has an architecture, from the lowly shanty by the railroad track to Chicago's tallest skyscraper. Unfortunately, most web sites are shanties, not skyscrapers. Companies that hastily threw up a web site in the dot-com boom days were visited by building inspector Jakob Neilsen, who told them their site should be condemned. But now we are entering a time of rebuilding, and we've got a chance to get it right.

Information Architecture: Blueprints for the Web introduces the core concepts of information architecture: organizing web site content so that it can be found, designing web site interaction so that it's pleasant to use, and creating an interface that is easy to understand. This book will help designers, project managers, programmers, and other information architecture practitioners avoid the costly mistakes of the past by teaching the skills of information architecture swiftly and clearly. Use this book and you will pass the usability inspection with flying colors!

3 out of 5 stars Are you just starting yours studies at IA now?.......2006-10-21

I have to ask you a question - "Are you just starting yours studies at IA now?". If yes, probably this book will help you. It's easy to read, small and fun. A really nice overview about IA and even usability. You could spend a lot of time reading the polar bear book, and I recommend that, but start reading this book is a nice idea too.

Unfortunely, if you have a little more experience on the subject, you won't get such surprising insights like the beginners readers. Christina has writen good things about the creation of personas and scenarios, one entire chapter, and that's all. Sometimes she mixes usability, IA and design in a strange way, losing focus. Even worst is how the book begin and over, very bad, with sad and ingenuous recommendations.

Simplifying... if you looks at a nice overview about IA, you'll enjoy reading this book. Otherwise, search for another book, more consistent, with more focus and better ideas, not only common.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Overview of IA.......2006-05-16

I'm a web developer and have always been fascinated with the interaction of humans and web sites, and this book does an excellent job of explaining the subject in simple terms while addressing more complex issues, as well. I read this book back in 2003 when it was first published and, not being an information architect, was happy to find it spoke to my level of knowledge.

With chapter titles like "First Principles: Some rules of thumb, and some thumbing of the rules" and "Gurus and Rules: In which some people like to boss you around, when we know that's my job," the book entertains as it educates, and leaves you with a comrehensive set of steps & guidelines when designing a site from scratch or improving an existing one. Numerous case studies, screen shots and diagrams also break up the monotony of what could otherwise be a boring subject.

If you're new to IA or are looking to expand your knowledge of architecting user interfaces for the web, this book belongs on your bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars Good overview/introduction to IA.......2005-05-29

This book is a pretty quick read and a very good overview/introduction to the field of information architecture and HCI methods in general. Wodtke covers wireframes, content inventories, usability testing, interviewing users, heuristics, metadata, personas/scenarios, human memory, the concept of recall vs. recognition, and many other topics. After having a year of graduate coursework in HCI, I'm not sure I really learned anything new from this book but it was a really good refresher. Moreover, there's a diagramming chapter that is excellent. It included examples of some diagrams that I had never tried before and wasn't familiar with. Overall, I would highly recommend this book. It was fun and easy to read and very useful. For me, it will serve as a nice handy "all-in-one" reference guide.

5 out of 5 stars insight into a true leader.......2004-07-05

this volume is an extremely valuable lesson from a true leader in the field. Wodtke provides insight into the thinking behind some of the most-used services on the Internet today.

4 out of 5 stars It's worth taking the time to read a book like this.......2004-02-20

This book won't present shocking facts about IA but it puts in writing many things that come in handy when you have to work in this field. The author includes good examples and the book can be read from cover to cover without feeling overwhelmed. Overall, it's worth taking the time out to read a book like this.

Product Description

Whether it's in Java, .NET, or Ruby on Rails, getting your
application ready to ship is only half the battle. Did you design
your system to survive a sudden rush of visitors from Digg or
Slashdot? Or an influx of real world customers from 100 different
countries? Are you ready for a world filled with flakey networks,
tangled databases, and impatient users?

If you're a developer and don't want to be on call at 3AM for the
rest of your life, this book will help.

In Release It!, Michael T. Nygard shows you how to design and
architect your application for the harsh realities it will face.
You'll learn how to design your application for maximum uptime,
performance, and return on investment.

Mike explains that many problems with systems today start with the
design:

"It's disconnected from the real world. It's the same as cars
designed solely in the cool comfort of the lab-they look great in
models and CAD systems, but don't work well in the real world. You
want a car designed by somebody who knows that oil changes are always
3,000 miles late; that the tires must work just as well on the last
sixteenth of an inch of tread as on the first; and that you will
certainly, at some point, stomp on the brakes while you're holding an
Egg McMuffin in one hand and a cell phone in the other."

With a combination of case studies and practical advice, Patterns to
follow and Anti-Patterns to avoid, Release It! will help you manage
the pitfalls that cost companies huge amounts of time and money each
year.

5 out of 5 stars Your tech library starts here!.......2007-09-15

What a great book!

Thirteen years ago, when I changed careers from manufacturing engineering to software engineering, my mentors started me on my way by having me read 'Writing Solid Code' and 'Death March' and something very confusing at the time, 'A Pattern Language: Towns, buildings, and construction' by Christopher Alexander, an architect in the original sense; a designer of buildings. (At the time, there were no design patterns in software per se and no software design pattern books.)

This book is what I would give to anyone starting out in programming today. Programming languages are only tools; this book explains why we have them and how to use them.

Brilliant!

Nicely done, Mr. Nygard.

Wayne Martin

5 out of 5 stars Great! ... what I read of it.......2007-08-07

The first few chapters of this book were very impressive. Unfortunately, my 2IC stole it from me several weeks ago, and has thus far resisted all entreaties (and threats) to return it!

I'm expecting it again in a week or so, whereupon I should be able to complete it, and this review.

From what I read so far, it's a 4.5-star effort (so it's getting 5. )

5 out of 5 stars Read It!.......2007-08-02

Required reading for anyone who develops non-trivial applications for use in the real world (TM). The author appears to have considerable experience, if the war stories that can be found throughout the book are anything to go by... The book focuses a lot on what to do (in order to avoid specific catastrophes), but sometimes has to skip over the details of how to do it -- which of course wouldn't be possible without going into details about specific products. I'd love to see a companion book along the lines of "Release It (with Open Source)!" :-)

5 out of 5 stars Stories, Facts and Resources for Reliable Production Code.......2007-07-21

This book helps you to understand why creating production ready code requires work at many levels: creating the deployment architecture, operations scenarios, and just plain writing code and testing. The book covers issues that every architect, developer and release engineer should know. The book has principles, patterns, and resources to help you identify production problems, prevent them, and survive them when all else fails.

One of the better features of the book is the stories that help you to understand issues and demonstrate that Nygard's lessons are based in experience. The lessons are (as the name of the series suggests) pragmatic, and each chapter leaves you with enough information to make changes to improve your application.

In books of this sort there is a balance between "principles" that are timeless and "how to" techniques that you can use immediately. This book is biased slightly towards Java, and contains a few references to current tools, there are enough general principles that there is little in the book that will date it.

As I read the book I found information about many topics that arose in each project that I have worked on, as well as things that I felt that I needed to learn more about.

After I finished the book I felt energized to do things better. If you build enterprise applications buy this book to learn how to build more production-ready applications. If you already know the lessons in the book, buy a copy or two for your colleagues who may not so that your life will be easier and you can get fewer late-night phone calls about a system you helped build.

5 out of 5 stars Everything a J2EE architecte should know about real life deployment.......2007-07-06

Once in a year, I tag a book as "book of the year", the best book I read during the year. 2007 is not over, but this my "2007 book of the year", I know that.
Frankly, I just bough this book because it's published by the "pragmatic programmers" and I trust these guys. The title is not even appealing. I knew quickly that I will discover many things.
For a long time, I wonder what to do to build up a system which is fine in production, but I didn't understand quite right what was needed (I know now that I really misunderstood the problem). The first thing that came to my mind was to make the software strong (a good thing to do by the way) ; the second thing that came to my mind was to make it really, really strong (which starts to be stupid).
Michael helps us to understand that systems fail anyway. But it should fail fast (and can often fail only partially), it must facilitate diagnosis and quick restart. And design must deal with that. But the author doesn't stay in general considerations, he points out specific patterns and antipatterns for the systems design, by means of stability and capacity. The vast majority of article tend to exposes how new technologies make the life so easy. The author revisit technologies and technical choices throught the production glasses: why AJAX should be considered with care, why we must think about pre-computed pages instead of ynamic composition in some cases, why caches is not a one-size-fits-all answer and so on. Another important point well illustrated: a system is software + hardware and the architecture must be though with physical deployment and hardware architecture in mind. Promotion of full independance of the architecture over the deployment is plain wrong. There are so many subjects tackled her, I can't speak about them all, sorry.
Michael knows his stuff, because he worked on very big e-commerce sites and his horror stories (they are numerous) are quite impressive. Maybe you don't work for a huge e-commrce site ? I don't. Believe me, the lessons learned here are still valuable, because they are emphasized by the size of the system.
This is a 334pages long book, with not so many pictures. I tend to prefer short books, simply because it takes time to read books. Here, each word count, it's not too long, for sure.
Oh, one last thing. I hate to give 5 stars. To deserve 5 stars, it must be hell of a book ! It is !!
Great job Micheal, please notify me for the next one.

Book Description

Expert Service-Oriented Architecture in C# 2005, Second Edition will immerse you in updated code and reference material specifically architected for Visual Studio 2005 and Web Services Enhancements (WSE) 3.0. With this book, you can get a head start on building SOA applications using the clear, conceptual discussions and practical examples provided by SOA experts Jeffrey Hasan and Mauricio Duran. The authors give fair treatment to difficult material without just glossing over it.

Most .NET-based web services are simply containers for limited RPC-style methods. This book will show you how to shift your development paradigm to create web services that process sophisticated XML messages within a secure, service-oriented, loosely coupled architecture. You'll gain deep insight into the newest release of the WSE toolkit, as this book blends theory with ample C# code samples and teaches you how to implement SOA solutions based on specifications like revised WS-Security, WS-Policy, and WS-Addressing. You'll want a copy of this second edition because

4 out of 5 stars Ignore the hype, buy for WSE 3.0.......2007-03-31

If I could rate the first half of the book separately from the second half, I'd give the first half 1 star, because it's filled with junk and hype and stupid marketecture assertions about magical things that services do that ordinary components don't. Most of these assertions are simply false, the kind of "selling-it" nonsense that usually accompanies a bleeding-edge technology. Thing is, the edge isn't bleeding for Web Services or SOA any more, and we can see through the hype pretty clearly, but Hasan hasn't caught up. So the first half of the book is pretty useless, just as it was in the first edition.

On the other hand, also just like the first edition, the second half is amazingly useful, dead-on practical, and totally hands-on. It's probably the most coherent summary of WSE 3.0 around, so the second half should get 5 stars. If you need to know how to get anything in WSE 3.0 up and running (and you should if your Web Services actually do anything significant), then the second half of this book is the first place you should look.

Book Description

"Every developer working with the Web needs to read this book." -- David Heinemeier Hansson, creator of the Rails framework

"RESTful Web Services finally provides a practical roadmap for constructing services that embrace the Web, instead of trying to route around it." -- Adam Trachtenberg, PHP author and EBay Web Services Evangelist

You've built web sites that can be used by humans. But can you also build web sites that are usable by machines? That's where the future lies, and that's what RESTful Web Services shows you how to do. The World Wide Web is the most popular distributed application in history, and Web services and mashups have turned it into a powerful distributed computing platform. But today's web service technologies have lost sight of the simplicity that made the Web successful. They don't work like the Web, and they're missing out on its advantages.

This book puts the "Web" back into web services. It shows how you can connect to the programmable web with the technologies you already use every day. The key is REST, the architectural style that drives the Web. This book: This is the first book that applies the REST design philosophy to real web services. It sets down the best practices you need to make your design a success, and the techniques you need to turn your design into working code. You can harness the power of the Web for programmable applications: you just have to work with the Web instead of against it. This book shows you how.

5 out of 5 stars A Breath of Fresh Air.......2007-09-30

For those of us floundering in the complete mess of heavyweight web service standards driven by the large industry vendors, it comes as a surprise that the web already has all the features you need to build enterprise level distributed systems.

This book is well written and will become one of the 'must haves' on any developer's bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-09-28

A book well written and self-explanatory about how to write wonderful web-services without getting crazy with WSDL :)

5 out of 5 stars Prescription for your SOA woes.......2007-09-01

For those of us who have borne the agony of delivering and maintaining "big" web services, REST architectures as theorized by Roy Fielding came as a whiff of welcome, fresh air. But, like in any fresh pastures, the oxygenating promise of simplicity pulled us in different directions leading to arguments about the degrees of RESTfulness and the fundamental principles of REST. From Amazon to deli.cio.us to flickr, RESTful API's flourish, but when compared, differ. Which raises the question: if there was a 'pure' REST architecture, what would it look like? How would you build it?
This book answers those questions more completely than any other resource out there. It has been one of the most valuable books I have held with me for it has shown me in all its glorious theory, practice and examples, how I may generate complex service-oriented behavior using simple rules. Once immersed, 400 pages will fly by. The rules were always out there, what this book does is simply to explain them to the rest of us, who have not 'got it' yet and how to play by those rules. Read the book. Chew on it. When you understand the vision and the road-map it lays out to achieve the vision, as you begin to see how you may scale those seemingly-unsurmountable web-service hurdles, you will be as glad as I am now, to have invested in this wonderful book.

3 out of 5 stars Good but pedantic and repetitious.......2007-08-30

Ok, the concept behind the book is valid: let's have computers use the web the way it was intended to be used, and if everybody sticks to a small set of reasonable design rules, we'd all be better off. But why does it take 400 pages for the authors to drive that point home (over and over again)? 70% of the content seems "filler" material, which has been put in just to turn this into a book. True, there are code examples that may be helpful to some beginner programmers, but I'm still left feeling that this could have been a well-written, 3-chapter book about 100 pages long.

I'm still glad I read it but found the blabbing rather frustrating. My 2c.

5 out of 5 stars An important guide .......2007-08-07

Collections strong in web services and web development will find Leonard Richardson & Sam Ruby's RESTFUL WEB SERVICES an important guide to connecting web functions with everyday technologies everyone uses. REST is an architectural style that drives the web, and RESTFUL WEB SERVICES introduces ROA and the roles that govern design of RESTFUL web services. Advanced computer libraries catering to programmers need this expose which surveys functions and real-world applications, including common problems and solutions.

    Book Description

The last decade has seen tremendous growth in usage of the World Wide Web. Web caching is a technology aimed at reducing the transmission of redundant network traffic and improving access to the Web. The key idea in Web caching is to cache frequently- accessed content so that it may be used profitably later. This leads to cost savings, reduction in network traffic, improved access and better content availability. Web Caching and Its Applications gives the reader an understanding of the latest developments in Web caching research.
Topics covered include architectural aspects, aspects requiring coordination among caches, aspects related to network traffic, techniques that complement caching, practical aspects, and aspects related to performance. While Web Caching and Its Applications is designed for a professional audience, students will appreciate the exercises for applying the knowledge to solving practical problems related to Web caching and Internet performance. The book includes an exhaustive list of references for further study.

In Chapter 6 of Information Architecture for the World Wide Web, the authors discuss the details of good search-engine design. In a bitingly humorous segment, they analyze a Web site's search-page results: "Let's say you're interested in knowing what the New Jersey sales tax is.... So you go to the State of New Jersey web site and search on sales tax. The 20 results are scored at either 84% or 82% relevant. Why does each document receive only one of two scores?... And what the heck makes a document 2% more relevant than another?"

With a swift and convincing stroke, the authors of Information Architecture for the World Wide Web tear down many entrenched ideas about Web design. Flashy animations are cool, they agree, as long as they don't aggravate the viewer. Nifty clickable icons are nice, but are their meanings universal? Is the search engine providing results that are useful and relevant? This book acts as a mirror and with careful questioning causes the reader to think through all the elements and decisions required for well-crafted Web design. --Jennifer Buckendorff

    Book Description

Some web sites "work" and some don't. Good web site consultants know that you can't just jump in and start writing HTML, the same way you can't build a house by just pouring a foundation and putting up some walls. You need to know who will be using the site, and what they'll be using it for. You need some idea of what you'd like to draw their attention to during their visit. Overall, you need a strong, cohesive vision for the site that makes it both distinctive and usable.

Information Architecture for the World Wide Web is about applying the principles of architecture and library science to web site design. Each web site is like a public building, available for tourists and regulars alike to breeze through at their leisure. The job of the architect is to set up the framework for the site to make it comfortable and inviting for people to visit, relax in, and perhaps even return to someday.

Most books on web development concentrate either on the aesthetics or the mechanics of the site. This book is about the framework that holds the two together. With this book, you learn how to design web sites and intranets that support growth, management, and ease of use. Special attention is given to:

Information Architecture for the World Wide Web is for webmasters, designers, and anyone else involved in building a web site. It's for novice web designers who, from the start, want to avoid the traps that result in poorly designed sites. It's for experienced web designers who have already created sites but realize that something "is missing" from their sites and want to improve them. It's for programmers and administrators who are comfortable with HTML, CGI, and Java but want to understand how to organize their web pages into a cohesive site.

The authors are two of the principals of Argus Associates, a web consulting firm. At Argus, they have created information architectures for web sites and intranets of some of the largest companies in the United States, including Chrysler Corporation, Barron's, and Dow Chemical.

4 out of 5 stars Very In Depth Coverage of Information Architecture.......2007-09-11

There's a lot more to information architecture (IA) than you might realize until you read this. IA is particularly critical to the design of large web sites which can quickly evolve into incomprehensible mazes for the users & their designers. Designers need a systematic framework for ensuring the site's content & navigation evolves in a manor that is intuitive to the user & manageable for the developers. This sort of framework is described in depth in this classic. Not a quick read, but a necessary read to understand what designers of large web must consider.

    1 out of 5 stars The worst O'Reilly Book I've ever read.......2003-09-17

I usually love O'Reilly - I've never bought a book of theirs that I didn't find occasion to go back to for some reason at some point before this book. Most O'Reilly books have info that you can reference when your actually working on a project - this book doesn't even prepare you for discussing the task intellegently. Granted, if this were not an O'Reilly book I would have given it 2 stars, but I have higher expectations from O'Reilly.

An example of what I found incredibly frustrating about the book follows. I expected the section called "Designing Elegant Navigation Systems" (the last section in the chapter "Designing Navigation Systems") to contain advice about what to include in the navigation system and suggestions for designing navigation systems. I got one page of babeling that included sentances like "Based on the hierarchy, you will be able to select key pages (or types of pages) that shoudl be accessible from every other page on the web site." At no point to they suggest what sorts of pages should be accessible. They don't mention the ones that should be obvious: feedback, home, and search; nor do they discuss if or when it's desirable to have one link from each major subsection in the global navigation.

The whole book was disapointing to me, I don't really feel that I learned much of anything on the subject. I knew nothing of the field to start with, so I feel I should have come away from any well written book on the subject with some comprehension of the field.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time.......2003-06-19

    I expected more from Peter.

The book shows that many still don't know what an information architecture is and how to use it.

3 out of 5 stars Not too impressed.......2002-06-30

I was disappointed in this book, particularly because it has the O'Reilly imprint. It's too vague to be of much use, I thought. Not bad, but not very helpful, either.

5 out of 5 stars Great foundational piece!.......2002-03-30

Rosenfeld and Morville's book makes, perhaps, its greatest contribution by presenting its potentially intimidating subject in a way that makes it accessible to virtually any reader. This is no small task and speaks as much about the authors' gift for writing as it does about their technical knowledge. In my office, this book has become foundational reading and I recommend it highly to colleagues or anyone interested in the presentation of information through the web.

Upgrading and Repairing Servers is the first line of defense for small- and medium-sized businesses, and an excellent go-to reference for the experienced administrators who have been asking for a reference guide like this one for a long time! It's all here in one, incredibly useful tome that you will refer to again and again.

Inside is in-depth coverage of server design and implementation, building and deploying, server hardware components, network and backup operations, SAN, fault tolerance, server racks, server rooms, server operating systems, as well as SUN Microsystems servers. No other computer hardware book has ever dared tackle this enormous topic - until now!

1 out of 5 stars Not much value for the admin in the trenches.......2006-07-03

This book is great if you're interested in page after page of the history of the CPU. Or if you want a schematic of every motherboard and all it's traces. I mean really, if I've got a server that's giving me problems is one of the things that's high on my To Do list "be sure to check traces on M-bd"? Give me a break.

If you're looking for a book that provides practical information for upgrading and maintaining servers this book misses the mark, almost completely. It's crammed full of all the wrong information and reminds me of so many of the tech's I've dealt with from time-to-time over the years that have (for one reason or another) become so completely out of touch with the real world "hands on" activities the typical system and/or network admins deal with on a day-to-day basis.

3 out of 5 stars Repackaging of Some Long-in-the-Tooth Titles.......2002-05-21

The "6 Bestselling Books on a CD-ROM" on the cover looks impressive, but dig into the info contained on the CD and it begins to look a lot less so.

Some of these titles are definitely looking a bit long-in-the-tooth ("Information Architecture for the World Wide Web" was published back in early 1998, and the "Cascading Style Sheets" title is looking a lot less "definitive" in the two years since it first came out). In fact, with the sole exception of the book included with this CD pack, all of the books are at least a year old, limiting their usefulness. Can you say "retread"?

The ActionScript title is good but I would have preferred a more generally-applicable book instead, like, say O'Reilly's recent book on JavaScript...

Still, having all of this info at your fingertips in a CD-ROM format is genuinely useful -- the search feature is fast and accurate -- more so than you're likely to get when looking up the same keyword on a major search engine. So far I've found the XHTML title and the Web Design in a Nutshell (which is the "book" included in this package) the most-referenced titles, the latter in particular an excellent (and relatively recent) publication.

Truly the definitive compendium about web design, and the perfect reference for anyone seeking create or improve their own website. The system requirements for The Web Design CD Bookshelf: Version 1.0 are a browser software such as Netscape Communicator or Internet Explorer supporting HTML, and to support the search engine, a Java-enabled browser supporting Java version 1.1.2 or later.

5 out of 5 stars Good, clear read.......2004-04-13

A good primer, clearly defined concepts and a writing style that cuts thru the jargon right to the point. Others have expounded the overall virtues of the book, I'll only echo the earlier review praising Chapter 2's definitions.

If you are an executive, senior manager, or just an IT professional looking for the "no BS" answer, and need a clear, concise overview of this sometimes complicated subject so you can make informed decisions on utilizing (or recommending) web services in your business, this book is for you.

1 out of 5 stars Executive guide is right........2004-03-06

There is not enough detail here to make this book worth the money. Don't waist your time, there are many other books here that will fill in the details, this is not one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Make Business Sense of Your Web Initiatives.......2003-08-11

Web-based initiatives can be as simple or complex as looking at the night sky. The technology choices from programming languages to servers to networks to security can be overwhelming. Add to the mix the types of Internet-based business systems desired and demanded by customers along with the ability to implement them and you can find a state of confusion and uncertainty.

Eric and Mark do a superb job of helping executives understand how to take realistic steps to solve the technology conundrum and how best to approach Web-based initiatives that will bring the greatest value to achieving business goals. Without such a book, this journey can be daunting.

The thought leadership presented in the book takes the reader from the application of innovative uses of current technologies to the leading edge of future applications and architectures; all compartmentalized into four phases of adoption.

A great dissertation that is ahead of the pack in toning down the hype of Web Services while presenting a realistic view of the tremendous value that can be achieved.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone venturing into Web Services!.......2003-05-21

Given the wide spread industry hype surrounding Web Services, and the appearance that every software vendor has their own definition and perspective on what really constitutes a Web Service, what do you get - A whole heap of confusion!!

In tackling this confusion "Executive's Guide to Web Services," does a great job of explaining what Web Services are, and separating the business realities from the overblown hype. As such this book is recommended reading for anyone who is looking for a foundation upon which to really understand this emerging subject space.

In this book Marks and Werrell discuss:

    - What differentiates Web Services from previous IT trends
    - The concepts and standards that make Web Services possible
    - The rational for using Web Services to increase organizational flexibility and agility
    - Current and future business scenarios for reducing costs and increasing revenues
    - How and where to begin using Web Services (as well as where not!)
    - Predominant software vendors in the Web Services space, and their market positions

Overall the book avoids technical discussions, favoring a business centric perspective, from which strategic and tactical business considerations are examined. If you are looking for a guide on how to code your first Web Services program, this is not the book for you, this topics is left to the numerous implementation books already out there.

In this book you will find a solid Web Services foundation that will arm you with a good perspective on what Web Services are, as well as where and when to use them today. You will also gain the knowledge and understanding necessary to discern Web Services reality from hype - do not underestimate how valuable this knowledge is for early forays into implementation of Web Services!

5 out of 5 stars Great job explaining Web Services.......2003-05-06

"Executive's Guide to Web Services" starts out by providing real world examples of how and where Web services are being used today (e.g. Dunn & Bradstreet, Dell etc). These examples are used as a backdrop from which Web services concepts are introduced. Chapter 2, "Standards, Concepts and Terminology" is without doubt the most readable and comprehensive Web services primer that I've yet to find - it's worth buying the book for this chapter alone!

    CONTENT:
Using chapter 2 as a foundation, later chapters further explore what Web services are, and what they can (and can't) do for businesses. Key topics covered include:
o Web Service Adoption - Looks at the hype surrounding Web services and outlines what's really achievable today. Also, details what the authors refer to as the "Web services Adoption Lifecycle," which maps the likely adoption and business usage of Web services over the next 3-5 years.
o Where to Begin - A step by step analysis of how, where, and when to use Web services for your business.
o Strategic/Vertical Market Implications - The medium to long terms strategic implications of Web services adoption.
o Architecting for Competitive Advantage - A conceptual discussion of how Web services can be used to create a more agile and flexible infrastructure, which is more adaptive to the fluidity of today's market dynamics.

    CONCLUSIONS:
Overall, "Executive's Guide to Web Services" does a great job of explaining what Web services are, where and when to use them, and how they can be used to improve internal and inter-company operating efficiencies.
