Book Description
Great poker players are master tacticians. Not only do they calculate odds with lightning speed and astonishing precision, but they also cunningly anticipate and manipulate the actions of their adversaries. In short, they boast skills that every lawyer can envy. This highly entertaining work might best be summed up as "better lawyering through poker." Steven Lubet shows exactly how the tactics of the poker table can be adapted to litigation, negotiation, and virtually every aspect of law practice. In a series of engaging and informative lessons, Lubet describes concepts like "betting for value," "slow playing," and "reverse bluffing," and explains how they can be used by lawyers to win their cases. The best card players, like the best lawyers, have a knack for getting their adversaries to react exactly as they want, and that talent separates the winners from the losers. Lawyers' Poker is an irresistible guide to successful lawyering and an enjoyable read for anyone with an interest in law. No poker knowledge required.
Customer Reviews:
There's nothing here that a lawyer could learn.......2007-09-13
There's far less that could be learned from this book than one could by watching a few law-related TV shows.
The poker related explanations are rather mediocre so that poker players would get bored, and one gets a feeling that the author is stretching to find an anecdote to fit every situation.
The text is peppered with anecdotes that are mildly interesting, both poker-related and from legal cases. If there's the ideal book that brings the two topics together, this is not it. I found no eye-popping revelations, it felt like a routine drill, covering all the angles--never going too deep.
I actually picked up this book to see if I could learn anything in preparation for a tort case--as I am not a lawyer but a competent poker player. I learned one thing from this book--conceptually, it is not a bad idea to share enough information before trial (during or before discovery) to arrive at a situation where the opponent has enough to achieve an optimal settlement.
So many aspects of law are so complicated that by the time you get to be a lawyer, poker has little to teach you that haven't already seen. The book proved this belief.
Legal insights demonstrated through poker.......2007-06-08
Inexperienced poker players often mistake poker for a game of chance. In fact, good players recognize that good hands and bad hands even out after many hands. It is the skill with which they play that separates losers from their money.
The advocacy system of law in the USA can appear too much of a game of chance to outsiders. However, Steven Lubet uses poker as a metaphor and guide to the methods behind the apparent madness of lawyerly questions and argument. The writing style is elegant without drowning in complicated language or "legalese." The author's dry wit is an added joy.
Thought-provoking, Instructive, and Entertaining.......2007-03-16
Professor Lubet's book is thought-provoking, instructive, and entertaining. The similarities between litigation and poker are evident to every litigator, but Professor Lubet's accounts of various poker maneuvers and strategies will cause even the most seasoned litigator to reexamine conventional thinking. One example: the traditional strategy in defending a deposition is to limit the deponent's responses as much as possible. Professor Lubet suggests the contrary-that showing your cards in a deposition may increase the pot because 90 percent of cases settle rather than proceed to trial.
Similarly, the early raise (presenting substantial discovery early in the case) even if a bluff (because counsel does not have the resources to consider proceeding to trial), can pay dividends.
Whether the reader is a card player or not, Professor Lubet achieves the difficult task of presenting poker big game moves in an understandable but exciting way. This book is a valuable, entertaining read for every litigator. The uninitiated poker player will have a new found respect for the game.

Money matters.......2007-10-01
Excellent book, easy to read, understand and follow. I look forward to putting into action what I have read.
Biased and not always correct.......2007-02-28
Orman writes with an obvious bias. Though I agree with much of the obvious; it serves to cloud the not entirely correct. I would suggest Arthur Levitt's, Take on the Street or other such, more knowledgeably written books.
Boot camp for the foolish.......2007-01-31
I know I'm smart and that's why it bothers me so much that my finances are always shipwrecked. So knowing that the problem couldn't possibly be me I bought just about every self help book on the market to find out the secret to abundance that was obviously avoiding me.
Then along came Suze with her baseball bat approach, no nonsence just plain sence, and somehow she hit a home run. It was me after all, not the world, not something I didn't know, just plain stupid lack of dicipline.
This is by far the best financial advice I have received from any person or book. I bought the audio CD so instead of listening to sports radio I listened to this on my commute. The Pat's lost, I think thanks to this I might finally win.
Thanks Suze
For those wanting -and not having- financial freedom.......2006-08-18
Orman presents a holistic way of creating and managing wealth.
I think her no-nonses approach is very valuable. For those who are happy about their financial situation and have a comfortable investment nest, this book would probably reitarate the lessons already learnt.
For those who want to take action and ownership and want to enjoy life, and be responsible, this is a great book. I've bought several for clients and friends.
It is fantastic for people who want to get out of financial difficulties and don't want to blame it on the system. Also for those who know that success takes effort and does not come instantly.
Many of her ideas will help making smarter choices or even think about things that we did not think before.
I also think it is biased for the American Market, since taxes, legalities and cultures differ.
Great as a source of quotes too. Not for those who want to feel sorry, want a quick fix, or want to make tons of money. it is a more profound book.
This should be taught in school.......2006-03-11
Suze explains finances in an easy and enjoyable way. She gives vivid examples to help you remember the lessons she is teaching. Growing up, no one in my family talked about handling their finances because none of them understood the topic. I bought several additional copies of this book-on-CD to help my family become more educated about money and so they were not so dependent on others. I hope that this audio book will spark their interest and encourage them to pick up other books.

The birth of the Law of Attraction.......2007-01-10
Since the movies The Secret and What the Bleep Do We Know, there has been a lot of talk about the Law of Attraction, creating your reality and such. This book is the grand-father of them all. If you want to hear it from the horse's mouth, and the man who also wrote Think And Grow Rich, this is the Bible of the Law of Attraction. At 17 lessons and a few hundred pages, you can't get more detailed than that. A fantastic book, easy to read, with lots of examples. Of course, it's dated, written in 1917. But it's still current today, and very readable. Dr Magne, Cancer Free For Life
Beyond inspiring.......2006-10-13
One of Napoleon Hill's maxims is to do more than you are being paid for, and he certainly does that in this book.
This book is truly a Bible for success, and is full of amazing concepts. Though this book was written back in the 1920's and 30s, the concepts are Universal and timeless. Reading this book opens up whole new horizons in my thinking, and has me going wow.
As someone who loves metaphysics, I can state that Napoleon Hill is a very conscious person obviously schooled in the metaphysical laws as well. I love his explanation about energy and the ether, and also the analogy between radio signals, and our own ways of communicating, coinicidences etc.
Clearly, he has had phenomenal success as a teacher and motivator, and he has tapped the greatest minds of his time.
Motivation, wealth building and success without NH's concepts, would be like music as if the Beatles had never existed. You might appreciate it, but something would be missing.
So, I highly recommend this book. If you are into the more metaphysical, check out Creating Money by Sanaya Roman.

OUTSTANDING for REAL WEALTH from the Inside Out that LASTS.......2006-05-12
This is one of the BEST books (there are two in the set) that I have ever read for what truly creates real and lasting wealth, as well as what prevents people from the same.
The wisdom in this book is timeless, and will definitely show you where you may have been unconsciously blocking abundance in your life, as well as the character beneath to sustain it with a pure conscious.
I could quote this book a thousand times. A few of my favorites are:
"No man has a chance to enjoy permanent success until he begins to look in the mirror for the real cause of all his mistakes."
"Don't be afraid of a little opposition. Remember that the 'Kite' of success generally rises AGAINST the wind of Adversity - not with it!"
"Is it not strange that we fear most that which never happens? That we destroy our initiative by the fear of defeat, when, in reality, defeat is a most useful tonic and should be accepted as such."
"Service, Sacrifice and Self-Control are three words which must be well understood by the person who succeeds in doing something that is of help to this world."
"Charles Chaplin makes a million dollars a year out of a funny, shuffling walk and a pair of baggy trousers, because he does 'something different.' Take the hint and individualize yourself with some distinctive idea."
"E.M. Statler became the most successful hotel man in the world by rendering MORE SERVICE and BETTER SERVICE THAN HIS GUESTS WERE ASKED TO PAY FOR."
There is more in this book of lasting value that can truly make a difference in your life than many get-rich-quick books I've come across. As this great book states, "Conceit is a fog which envelops a man's real character beyond his own recognition. It weakens his native abilities and strengthens all his inconsistencies."
This book really shows you the stuff wealth is made of. It comes from a pure heart, an open mind that values wisdom, and a person who values people more than dollars. Do that, and you'll come to find more dollars than you ever have before.
Along with this book, I recommend "Think and Grow Rich" (shown above) and "Failing Forward" by John C. Maxwell if you're looking for more current examples, though timeless and rewarding.
They ALL deserve 10 stars.

Book Description
Combating terrorism is nothing new for democracies. Over the course of decades, a wide range of democratic states has encountered an array of terrorist groups--and, moreover, has often prevailed against them. As this timely and stimulating volume makes clear, the United States can learn much from fellow democracies to help it in its current war against al Qaeda and affiliated groups.
Democracy and Counterterrorism offers unparalleled breadth in its comparative study of the policies, strategies, and instruments employed in the fight against terrorism. The distinguished contributors--some scholars, some practitioners, and all renowned experts--examine no fewer than fourteen cases, featuring thirteen states and sixteen major terrorist groups. Each case study includes a brief overview, a detailed analysis of the policies and techniques that the government employed, and an assessment of which measures proved most effective and instructive.
The substantial conclusion draws together common threads from the individual cases and asks what lessons their collective experience can offer to the democracies now battling al Qaeda and the global jihadists. Among the answers sure to interest policymakers as well as academics is that the constraints within which democracies must fight terrorism are actually a source of strength; democratic governments that seek simply to obliterate terrorism by force usually succeed only in making their problems worse.

"A timely study on the implementation of NCLB in 6 states during the initial phase of the reform. The authors' policy recommendations will be particularly useful to policy makers and practitioners in designing more effective strategies to improve schooling quality for the least advantaged children. This book will be widely adopted in graduate courses in educational policy and intergovernmental relations."
—
Kenneth Wong, Professor
Peabody College, Vanderbilt University
"This is an important, topical book that provides a deep look at fundamental issues in the design and implementation of No Child Left Behind."
—
Richard F. Elmore, Gregory Anrig Professor of Educational Leadership
Harvard Graduate School of Education
"The well-documented and thorough approach to collecting the data is a major strength. The material fit with my experiences as a practicing principal. This book can serve as a catalyst for quality conversation that is so drastically needed about how to make NCLB do what it is intended to do—ensure that every child is successful!"

The essential guide to understanding NCLB
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is one of the biggest educational forces of our time. So why is it one of the least understood?
NCLB
Meets School Realities is an essential resource for educators wanting to explore and understand the issues raised by NCLB. Based on original research of 11 districts across 6 states by The Civil Rights Project at Harvard University, this text details how NCLB is put into practice, the issues it raises, and how it affects minority and low-income students. The authors look closely at the implications of increased federal involvement in education, how states designed their accountability systems to meet the NCLB requirements, and the implications of the adequate yearly progress provisions for schools and students. They examine whether the transfer policy creates better schooling options for disadvantaged families, the ability of districts to implement supplemental educational services, and how teachers view the efficacy of NCLB’s reforms. They also review one provision—graduate rate accountability—in light of the national graduation rate crisis.
NCLB Meets School Realities includes:
- Practical methods to understanding the political implications of NCLB
- A detailed look at how proficiency standards affect minority youth
- Revealing data from 11 school districts across 6 states

Poor........2007-05-11
I must say I bought this book due to the attention given to the rise of Shia Islam in Iraq especially from Muqtada al-Sadr and his private army who have done so much to demolish Iraqs stability with his private army of South American style death squads.
I was interested in Muhammad Baqir as unlike Muqtada whose religious knowledge seems to come from Mullahs abroad and qualifications from little more than his family name (which he seems to use and exploit at every available opportunity) he was at least a well respected scholar (amongst Shia at least) in spite of being the co-founder (along with Muhammda Baqir al-Hakim (famed for his 'Badr brigade' the death squads of Basra and its surroundings)) in forming the Iranian backed Islamist movement in Iraq he was seen as more moderate than Khomeni.
This book however is to say the least a toil to read. Slow and lacking in any real commentary or explaination to the text. While there is an introduction to Islamic law including the history of its development I feel there sould have been more concentration on the actual text in order to make it at least more readable.
While this book may be of interest especially with ongoing events in Iraq it would certainly take more than just a passing read and perhaps recomended only to those with a deep interest in Shia Islamic law.
Excellent and Long overdue.......2003-09-05
This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. As-Sadr was a top scholar killed by Saddam and this translation was long overdue. I should think anyone who teaches Islamic law in the West would find it essential.

A must-read book........2006-09-19

This book is a must-read for all aspiring female lawyers, and all college students, male or female who are going to face balancing career and family after college. Women-at-Law would make a great addition to anyones Holiday Shopping List, perfect for the teenagers and 20-somethings who are just starting out.
Women At Law Book Review.......2006-09-03
Any woman who has ever questioned what kind of life she might have as a law-yer will find the answer in Women-at-Law: Lessons Learned Along the Pathways to Success. In her book, Phyllis Horn Epstein smoothly interweaves history, ca-reer information, and personal anecdotes for a broad overview of the profession, emphasizing the female lawyer's point of view.
The author is a tax attorney and partner in a small law firm and has been in prac-tice for 25 years. She has spent many of those years learning to balance that ca-reer with her roles as wife and parent. Her writing flows easily, with precise phrasing and exacting references. The use of humor in the midst of otherwise serious material balances the composition.
Those readers with little knowledge of the legal field - beyond the media stereo-types - will be amazed to learn the variety of opportunities to be found in it. Con-tributing their brief biographies are women who are self employed, or part of a corporate structure, those who work in the private as well as the public sector. There are examples of women who have used a law degree to start a business or become a part of someone else's business. Some describe choosing to de-vote their entire life and being to their vocation, while others find satisfying ave-nues of the law that will allow a fulfilling combination with family life.
Women-at-Law strives to reassure the doubter that a career in the law can be compatible with being a wife and mother. We learn from the mini biographies that it wasn't always so, that it is still not an easy path, but no more daunting than many other professional careers.
Although the book does not deal with careers of women in other professions, the parallels are obvious. One can easily substitute "women professionals" for "women lawyers" in citing both the gains and struggles of women in the work-force. There are many common experiences to share.
Women-at-Law succeeds because it gives such a personal account of the lives of many women. Quotations from the author's extensive interviews are sprinkled throughout to reveal the very down-to-earth women behind the powerful titles. We see that they identify success, not in terms of money and fame, but the ability to be devoted to their work while retaining individuality as women, and as wives and mothers if they wish.
One is especially drawn to the author's references to her own life. She obviously made the right career choice for herself. She clearly knows who she is, what her work is about, and is proud to be a lawyer. But she does not sugarcoat the chal-lenges or eliminate the stumbling blocks along the path. Her devotion is evident in these revelations of her lifestyle, as she strives to make the right decisions and compromises for herself as a wife, mother, and lawyer.
Page 2
In her book, Epstein reaches out to women who are considering a career in law, young women planning their futures or those making a career change later in life.
She entices those who are drawn to intellectual challenge, social consciousness, and personal fulfillment. Read it to learn what it means to be a lawyer. It may be the decision maker for a woman considering this career.
A wonderful history of women attorneys - and an excellent resource for women practicing law today!.......2006-07-12
As a female lawyer from the author's generation, I am embarassed to say that much of the history in this fine book was new to me. Any woman attorney would benefit by reading the remarkable history of women-at-law, but author Phyllis Horn Epstein (the first woman attorney hired by Holland & Knight) goes far beyond history by examining what it is to be a female attorney today, including the "glass ceilings," special concerns of minority lawyers, and the importance of mentoring and being mentored. Any woman currently practicing law will empathize with all the vignettes from others who are trying to juggle professional responsibilities and family life. The book is full of facts and figures, but enlivened by the stories of real women in their own words. What a great gift this book would be to any female lawyer, but most especially to any young woman considering a career in law - the book is both cautionary and inspiring. We may have come a long way, baby, but there's a long way yet to go.

Not Complete, nor Unabridged.......2007-09-09
I just received my copy a couple of weeks ago. Part of an assignment for my mentoring group was to gather with a group and read the first lesson aloud. I was stopped several times during my reading because my version read differently than the versions of several others (their versions were from the Napoleon Hill Institute) I soon began to see a trend: It seems that BN Publishing has seen fit to remove every reference to Jesus Christ in their "complete & unabridged" single volume. So, do not expect to read all of the author's words in this volume. Napoleon Hill has been censored.

International policies towards protecting intellectual property rights have seen profound changes over the past two decades. Rules on how to protect patents, copyright, trademarks and other forms of intellectual property have become a standard component of international trade agreements. Most
significantly, during the Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations (1986-94), members of what is today the World Trade Organization (WTO) concluded the Agreement on Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), which sets out minimum standards of protection that most of the worlds
economies have to respect. How will developing countries fare in this new international environment? This book brings together empirical research that assesses the effects of changing intellectual property regimes on various measures of economic and social performance ranging from international
trade, foreign investment and competition to innovation and access to new technologies. The studies presented point to an important development dimension to the protection of intellectual property. But a one-size-fits-all approach to intellectual property is unlikely to work. There is need to adjust
intellectual property norms to domestic needs, taking into account developing countries capacity to innovate, technological needs, and institutional capabilities. In addition, governments need to consider a range of complementary policies to maximize the benefits and reduce the costs of reformed
intellectual property regulations. It will be of interest to students and scholars of international law, particularly in the area of intellectual property rights, international trade and public policy.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing and out of date.......2006-04-09
This is a book only an econometrician with a taste for the antique could love. Virtually all of the chapters in this edited volume are based on econometrics models using data from public databases, not on original field research. This has several implications, none of them fortunate.
First, in most chapters a lot of space is given over to discussing the pros and cons of features of the regressions and other statistical models used, rather than telling you much about IPR or development. Second, regressions describe correlations, but not causation. The insights they can convey are limited (though some authors don't let that notion cramp their style when it comes to stating their conclusions). Third, all of the authors go to the extreme of econometrics literary style by presenting their data solely in the form of tables of regression coefficients, without so much as a single graph. If you aren't a social scientist by training -- say, if you're a lawyer or technologist, among other people who might reasonably be intrigued by the book's title -- you will probably find this convention both irritating and opaque, notwithstanding any familiarity you may have with statistics. And fourth, forget about finding any qualitative research, much less finding instructive anecdotes about the practicalities of implementing IPR regimes in developing economies.
To make matters worse, the data is way out of date. In most chapters it is from 1995, and one chapter is even based on 1989 data -- notwithstanding that the book was published in 2005.
Only three of the 12 chapters are case studies focusing on specific countries. One is a simulation study of patents in the Indian pharmaceutical industry (data from 1992), another is about Lebanon, and the third is about IPR in China (using 1995 data). As with many of the articles, they suffer from poor editing, if not poor argumentation. E.g., on p. 319 we find: "It is difficult to sort out why the use of patents and trademarks is rising rapidly in China." Then in the next sentence, direct contradiction: "One reason is that the laws have improved and application fees are lower, inviting more applications. ..." A total of four such "reasons" are given before paragraph ends, in each case relating to why the use of IPR is increasing, NOT to why it's difficult to sort out an explanation for the increase. One of the authors of this chapter is also an editor of the volume; he should feel ashamed for allowing such silly non sequiturs to make it to print.
According to the back cover, this studies in this volume were conducted by World Bank or Bank-affiliated economic researchers. So, sadly, perhaps it's not so difficult to sort out why this volume is so out-of-touch and useless.
