3 out of 5 stars .....but this one fits in your pocket.......2002-02-12

The Table of Contents of this book is nearly indentical to the "Code of Federal Regulations" issued by the Justice Department and provided free of charge to anyone who asks for it. But at roughly 6x9 inches, it doesn't fit in my pocket. So if the pocket thing is important to you, I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars ADA Compliance Simplified!.......2001-04-15

This little book is easy to carry around and contains all of the ADAAG info you could ever need! I've been using mine for 2 years and would be lost without it! Thomas Schmokel - ADA Consultant

Are you tired of tracking down the office copy of the ADA standards? Is the only copy within the workstation of King Tornado? Get your hands on this little number. Keep it by you at all times. I have used this reference guide for two years now and it has saved me a lot of time. This is a very easy to use condensed version of the state issued ADA guide. It is accurate and reliable and it does not have to go back to the office library. And don't let the words "pocket guide" scare you off, this is not a brochure, it is a book. It's just smaller and smarter, not to mention lighter than the stardard issue. So get a grip on ADA, pocket size.

    Book Description

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, organizations that fail to provide reasonable accommodations to employees with mental disabilities may be subject to penalties and punitive damages. The Act does not, however, provide useful guidelines to help organizations comply--a gap that Dr. Fielder's book now fills. This manual shows that compliance is not difficult or expensive. In clear, concise language, it acquaints management with mental diagnoses, impairments, disabilities, the myths of mental illness and its affect on job performance, and provides samples of workplace accommodations and compliance plans. Practical and readable, the book is intended for management of organizations with 15 or more employees, their human resource staffs and employee assistance professionals, and legal counsel.

      Book Description

"Colker's book provides a comprehensive review of the ADA's history and a thorough analysis of how effective it has been in vindicating the rights of the disabled. She does not paint a pretty picture, but it is an accurate, empirically based assessment."
      —Trial

"[A] comprehensive, factually-supported, and carefully reasoned book in a manner worthy of academic interest. At the same time, [Colker] writes in a plain style free of academic jargon and returns consistently to the human-interest arena of practical ramifications."
      —New York Law Journal

"This book is must reading for teachers, school administrators, parents, vocational rehabilitation counselors, disability rights lawyers, and Deaf Community leaders who hope to help take the citizen ship interests of deaf and hard-of-hearing people to the next level. The book helps these constituencies make the essential connections between raising and educating deaf children and the rights and opportunities those children hope to enjoy."—Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education

" The Disability Pendulum chronicles societal views and court reactions to the evolving ADA. Ruth Colker shows that public acceptance and inclusion of persons with disabilities into society is as much driven by attitudes about disability as by law and policy themselves. Colker offers an enriched and fresh analysis of the forces affecting the civil rights movement of persons with disabilities in American society."
—Peter Blank, Charles M. and Marion Kierscht Professor of Law and Director, Law, Health Policy & Disability Center, University of Iowa College of Law

"Ruth Colker's book is an absolute must-read for anyone interested in disability rights. Colker has long been one of the most astute observers of the development of disability rights in the courts. This book lays out the compelling story of what the ADA was intended to do and what the courts have done to the ADA. The book is both inspiring and sobering."
—Chai Feldblum, Georgetown University Law Center

" The Disability Pendulum helps us to appreciate that how we address these issues will shape the lives of the next generation of children with disabilities."—The Law and Politics Book Review

Signed into law in July 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became effective two years later, and court decisions about the law began to multiply in the middle of the decade. In The Disability Pendulum, Ruth Colker presents the first legislative history of the enactment of the ADA in Congress and analyzes the first decade of judicial decisions under the act. She assesses the success and failure of the first ten years of litigation under the ADA, focusing on its three major titles: employment, public entities, and public accommodations.

The Disability Pendulum argues that despite an initial atmosphere of bipartisan support with the expectation that the ADA would make a significant difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities, judicial decisions have not been consistent with CongressÆ intentions. The courts have operated like a pendulum, at times swinging to a pro-disabled plaintiff and then back again to a pro-defendant stance. Colker, whose work on the ADA has been cited by the Supreme Court, offers insightful and practical suggestions on where to amend the act to make it more effective in defending disability rights, and also explains judicial hostility toward enforcing the act.

        Book Description

Fear, rage, courage, discrimination. These are facts of everyday life for many Americans with disabilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), has made working, traveling, and communicating easier for many individuals. But what recourse do individuals have when enforcement of the law is ambiguous or virtually nonexistent? And how will its changing definition affect individuals' lives-as well as their legal actions-in the future? What is life like in post-ADA America? Voices from the Edge seeks to challenge the mindset of those who would deny equal protection to the disabled, while providing informative analysis of the intent and application of the ADA for those who wish to learn more about disability rights. Giving voice to the many types of discrimination the disabled face--at a small Southern College, in the Library of Congress, on a New York City sidewalk--while illustrating the personal stakes underlying legal disputes over the ADA, this collection offers unparalleled insight into the lives behind the law. Contributors: Joan Aleshire on disability and the eye of the beholder. Achim Nowak on disclosing HIV. C.G.K. Atkins on being an academic liability. Stephen Kuusisto on hope without the tenure lifeboat. Leonard Kriegel on wheelchairs vs. NYC sidewalks. John Hockenberry on trying one's luck at public transit. Joan Tollifson on a license to drive disabled. Shawn Casey O'Brien on the blue beacon of accessibility. Jean Stewart on sign language in the ER. Ruth O'Brien on everything you wanted to know about the ADA.

4 out of 5 stars voices from the Edge: Narratives about the Americans with Disabilities Act.......2007-01-12

I did not give five stars because I was mainly interested in researching on the discrimination by disability information and what methods of arguments I could use in making my lawsuit case.

The book was good in showing how far the American Disabilities Act would go in applying to various cases of discrimination that can be claimed. I will use it as a reference book for further investigations of the ADA law.

5 out of 5 stars Make time for this book.......2005-05-27

As an advocate for rights of persons with disabilities, I think I've heard, seen or read it all. This book is powerful and made me question how much I know and how much more I need to learn about my own cause. Dr. Brown's and Marta Russell's writing are powerful.

Buy at least 2 copies of Voices from the Edge, because you'll want to keep one (it will be filled with margin notes) and you need to send a copy to someone as a gift

        Thanks for this read.

        Book Description

Who should qualify as disabled? The obese? Asymptomatic HIV-positive people?

In 1990 a landmark piece of legislation was passed by Congress. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was based on the idea that equal rights can solve social problems associated with disability. Few acts have sparked as much debate in recent years, with many employers and program providers protesting--and litigating--against the burdensome costs of the act. On the other side, many of the Americans with disabilities and their advocates claim that the ADA doesn't do enough, that only the most highly functioning disabled people benefit. Americans with Disabilities looks at the debate and sheds light on who is right.

In this groundbreaking work, leading philosophers, legal theorists, bioethicists, and policy makers offer incisive looks into the philosophical and moral foundations of disability law and policy.

A thought-provoking analysis of one of the most controversial laws on the books, Americans with Disabilities provides a keen understanding of how much U.S. law does--and should--protect citizens with disabilities against intolerance and social limitation.

4 out of 5 stars Shelby Keiser notwithstanding, this book is helpful.......2001-04-05

I understand the ire of a person who resents having to be compared with the general population, rather than to a specialized group the person wishes to become a member of, to have accommodations, but I feel that in her chapter on testing accommodations she does explain her viewpoint and the legal underpinnings of her opinion. In general, this book is a very good guide to documentation standards, provides forms that are useful, and is well worth the money as a reference book.
