Book Description
The past 30 years have seen vast changes in our attitudes toward crime. More and more of us live in gated communities; prison populations have skyrocketed; and issues such as racial profiling, community policing, and "zero-tolerance" policies dominate the headlines. How is it that our response to crime and our sense of criminal justice has come to be so dramatically reconfigured? David Garland charts the changes in crime and criminal justice in America and Britain over the past twenty-five years, showing how they have been shaped by two underlying social forces: the distinctive social organization of late modernity and the neoconservative politics that came to dominate the United States and the United Kingdom in the 1980s.
Garland explains how the new policies of crime and punishment, welfare and security—and the changing class, race, and gender relations that underpin them—are linked to the fundamental problems of governing contemporary societies, as states, corporations, and private citizens grapple with a volatile economy and a culture that combines expanded personal freedom with relaxed social controls. It is the risky, unfixed character of modern life that underlies our accelerating concern with control and crime control in particular. It is not just crime that has changed; society has changed as well, and this transformation has reshaped criminological thought, public policy, and the cultural meaning of crime and criminals. David Garland's The Culture of Control offers a brilliant guide to this process and its still-reverberating consequences.
Book Description
The incredible real-life cases behind TV's longest-running crime drama-includes photos.
True Stories of Law & Order reveals the fascinating and shocking facts behind 25 of the hit show's most popular episodes-from the incredible account of how a woman's repressed memory leads to the solving of a 30-year-old cold case to the high-profile investigation of transvestite millionaire Robert Durst. And just like in Law & Order, the actual crime is just the beginning, as you follow these cases from the initial stages of the investigation through the trial and up to the often controversial verdicts.
Part of the reason millions of fans tune in to Law & Order is the gritty realism of its storytelling. The monumentally popular show has included many episodes inspired by actual cases ripped from the headlines-true crimes that are often stranger and more chilling than fiction.
NOTE: This book was not authorized, prepared, approved, licensed, or endorsed by any entity involved in creating or producing the Law & Order television series.

Good reading.......2007-09-07
I was a little hesitant to order a book based on the real crimes behind the episodes of Law & Order, but I was pleased. The stories were brief, but being an avid Law & Order fan, I recognized the stories of Law & Order from the descriptions of the real crimes.
Great Book, Especially for True Crime Buffs.......2007-06-30
Although the book has little to do with the actual LAW & ORDER shows, it does a great job of going "behind the scenes," as it were, of 25 of the show's episodes to explore the true crimes they were based on.
These aren't stories for the faint of heart, but they do pull at the heartstrings. I remember watching many of the episodes the crimes were based on. This is a great book, especially for those interested in true crimes, but anyone will find them fascinating.
The authors have truly done their research and are to be commended.
Interesting Read.......2007-03-10
Some of these stories I recognized from the media. Other stories were new to me. I liked how they compared the true crime stories to the show.
A good read for the true crime reader.
Real stories of crime will stir your emotions.......2007-03-05
As a fan of the Law & Order series, I was intrigued by the title. The book actually does not have much to do with the television series franchise, but the true stories inside are presented in a way that any fan of the television series will enjoy.
Included are twenty-five true stories on which episodes of Law & Order are apparently based. These include the Liverpool murder of two-year old James Bulger by two 10-year old boys, the story of Jack Abbott, the protege of pulitzer-prize winning writer Norman Mailer, who stabbed aspiring actor Richard Adan to death over the use of a diner restroom; and the murder of Gulf War vet Anthony Riggs, killed by his wife and brother-in-law over life insurance proceeds.
Reading this book is like watching 25 short episodes of law and order, except that these ARE the true stories, with the real names.

Way out of date.......2007-02-16
This is way out of date, and has a lot of uninteresting information apparently used to fill out what otherwise would be a short book. Still, the old episodes are the best ones. I like having a list of them. Also, they provide the scoop on such disasterous cast decisions involving George Dzunda (he left and was a nightmare to work with), Dann Florek and Chris Noth.
Excellent Information!.......2007-02-13
L&O is my favorite show. I've seen every episode several times. This book helped me to understand more about the characters, and about the episodes. I'm impressed with it.
Still interesting, but it does need an update.......2006-12-17
The authors couldn't have known it when it was written, but they managed to write the definitive behind the scenes look at Law and Order when it was at its best, which was the first nine seasons. Shortly after this book was written, Steven Hill left the show as seasoned D.A. Adam Schiff, and a series of bad casting choices began to degrade the show's quality.
Particularly interesting are how all of the cast changes happened, including the actors' stories on how they found out and their reactions versus the reasonings of the show's producers. For example, Richard Brooks, who played ADA Robinette during the show's first three seasons, said he found out he had been ousted via a message on his answering machine and was very perplexed by the decision. The producers said that the reason for getting rid of Brooks was that he and Moriarty did not get along at all. We also learn that originally Chris Noth thought that the addition of the character of Lenny Briscoe, perhaps the most beloved character in Law and Order history, was a mistake because Briscoe and Logan were too much alike and could practically finish each other's sentences. Eventually the producers came to the same decision as Noth - and fired Noth. At the time this book was published this was still perhaps the most controversial personnel move made by the show. There is also the behind-the-scenes story of Michael Moriarty's resignation, which includes a bizarre if not paranoid letter from Moriarty in which he says that he believed Janet Reno and the federal government were wanting to censor the show.
Another chapter I really liked was on the challenges of filming on location in New York City. The California crew members are always afraid of New York traffic interfering with the logistics of filming, when in fact traffic can be more unpredictable in California. There were some occasional problems with crime - in 1992 a mugger trying to evade police hid under Paul Sorvino's trailer. Another time, someone shot a policeman down the street from where filming was taking place, with the gunshots clearly audible to the cast and crew. Also, S. Epatha Merkerson says she gets annoyed at all of the graffiti that NYPD Blue put up on the walls when they did filming, since that is more of an L.A. than a New York thing, by her estimation.
All in all, I found this book an interesting read, even though it is several years old. Perhaps a second edition will be in order after the show is over, once the cast, crew, and producers can be honest about some of the mistakes that have been made over the years since this book was published, particularly in the area of casting decisions.
Entertaining, useful and sadly dated........2006-02-11
A great little book covering both the territory of a behind the scenes book and an episode guide.
It starts off dealing with the genesis of the series, and quite a bit of detail behind the first four years of the series. Details of why certain cast members left or were fired are covered, and some of the stories are quite entertaining.
It does have a heavy bias towards the first four years of the series, giving the later seasons short coverage.
It also only covers up through the seventh season (now the series is in it's 16th year).
The episode guide is a good analysis, and better than most of the same age. Although it is nothing as good as the guides you get out of Keith Topping.
All in all, worth it for the measly price I paid for it used. At a new cover price, given it's age, probably not.
The Ultimate Fan Guide.......2001-10-22
I am, without a doubt, THE BIGGEST "Law & Order" fan. I've seen every episode at least three times and I can tell you about all the actors and characters. I thought I knew everything there was to know about the show until I was given this book for a birthday gift. That's when I REALLY started learning about my favorite television show. Aside from the actor/character profiles, pictures, and run-down of all the villians, there's also the ever helpful episode guide that gives you a rundown of every episode ever aired! What more could you possibly ask for? Well, how about all the juicy gossip that went on behind the scenes. All the backstabbing, fighting, and quarrelling amoung the stars and the show's producers/writers are aired out for everyone to read. There's also some really nice cast/actor pictures for your enjoyment. I took deep interest in the Chris Noth pictures (he's such a doll!).
I totally recommend this book if, like me, you're a fan and you want to know EVERYTHING about the show. This book is a must-have for the ultimate "Law & Order" fan!

Book Description
In living rooms across the country, Americans have fallen in love with law-related television programming. From primetime legal dramas such as Law and Order, The Guardian, CSI, JAG, and Judging Amy to a host of daytime courtroom spectacles including Judge Judy, People's Court, and Divorce Court, viewers are endlessly entertained by the practices of the criminal justice system.
But with television courtrooms appearing more like the studio of The Jerry Springer Show than institutions of justice, and with weekly dramas seamlessly blending cutting-edge forensic science with exaggerated fictions, it calls to question: just what is it about these shows that has the public so captivated? And, what effects do the images of crime and order presented through the media have on society's view of the actual legal and criminal justice systems?
In Law and Order: Images, Meanings, Myths, Mariana Valverde draws on examples from film, television, and newspapers to examine these questions and to demonstrate how popular culture is creating an unrealistic view of crime and crime control. Valverde argues that understanding the impact of visual representations of courtrooms, police departments, prisons, and the people who populate them is essential to comprehending the reality of criminal justice.
Introducing a wealth of resources in social and cultural studies along with suggestions for classroom discussions and assignments, this book pushes the field of criminology in new and exciting theoretical directions. It is essential reading for students and scholars of criminal justice and law.
Book Description
NBC’s Emmy award-winning hit series Law & Order is television’s longest-running drama. Like the series, Law & Order: Crime Scenes walks a thin line between reality and fantasy, presenting gritty crime scene photographs. Producer Dick Wolf discusses how he came up with the idea for the crime drama and describes each of the years’ main characters, accompanied by pictures. Aficionados will particularly delight in Wolf’s revelations about the characters’ personal lives. A postmortem commentary by photographer Jessica Burstein features thumbnails of the pictures, noting which episode each is from, with anecdotal information, and a brief synopsis of the crime scene.

For Die Hards.......2005-01-25
I got this book for my husband as a birthday present. We religiously watch all the Law & Order episodes, (rock on tnt and usa!) This book does contain some gore, but if you are a fanatic of the show, you will love this book! The book is separated into 3 sections. Each section is great in it's own way. Very well done and put together. Bravo!
Blessings to Jerry Orbach.
Washington reviewer said it all!.......2004-10-16
I try to stray away from other reviews, keeping my fingers crossed that if, by chance, we share the same thoughts, it's just coincidental. Well, I erred and read a review from Andrew Rogers and I must agree with everything that he said.
Dick Wolf's very informative photographic essay of the long-running NBC institution is for the fan and non-fan alike. It gives all the intricacies of television production, as well as showcases the actors that respectively starred in the show over the past fourteen years.
When I saw this one on the shelf of a local bookstore, I knew that it had to be mine. Just like the series it profiles, the book is worthy of awards for its striking black and white photography.
It also needs to be in the home of everyone that appreciates Wolf's masterpiece.
Now, I can't wait for the Special Victims Unit edition!
Not a coffee table book, maybe, but great for fans.......2004-05-25
"Law & Order" is becoming the British Empire of TV franchises: the sun never sets upon it. At any given moment, somewhere in the world, some station is probably broadcasting an episode of one of the three L&O series. If you're one of the many people who consider this a Good Thing, "Law & Order: Crime Scenes" is a book for you.
Much of the book is taken up by "crime scene" photos from the original "Law & Order" series. These photos not only illustrate the care taken by the show's actors and technicians, but are themselves often featured in the program. Serious fans will thus have fun playing "Name That Episode" with these images. While you know they're all staged, many of these photos are nevertheless rather gory and blood-spattered, and some are downright gruesome. That's why I doubt this book will be left out on the coffee table when the grandparents visit. Unless, of course, Grandma's an L&O fan too.
While the photos themselves are interesting (and one, at least, is surprisingly moving: the photo of Claire Kincaid [Jill Hennessy] "dead" in her car following the accident that took her out of the program), I was more intrigued by the sections that bookend them. The last part of the book consists of thumbnail biographies of L&O's principal characters. From Max Greevey and Paul Robinette all the way to Ed Green and DA Arthur Branch, series creator Dick Wolf not only explains their history on the show, but also why they were created, why they left (in real life and "TV life"), and how they progressed. While he doesn't answer any questions about a Jack-Claire affair, he does at least provide an explanation for Serena Southerlyn's changing dress and hairstyles from season to season.
On the front end, Wolf's introduction includes an excellent discussion of how the show was created, what he set out to do, and how well he thinks he's achieved it. This is followed by an in-depth look at the process of creating the "teaser," the two scenes between the initial fade-in ("In the criminal justice system...") and the opening credits. Everyone involved, from the techs to the actors to the real NYPD officers monitoring things and even the corpse herself, get a chance to speak about their role in the process. It's a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how a television production happens.
This book isn't really a viewers' guide to the show, and contains no episode summaries or anything like that. But many hard-core fans will no doubt get a lot out of it anyway. And even people interested in knowing how a series TV production goes from script to screen will probably enjoy the experience too.
Delectable Corpora Delicti.......2003-11-13
This book is everything I expected and more. Clear, fascinating text describes the show's origins, and how it is put together from its story-driven framework, to its ever-evolving cast of characters. Excellent profiles on those in front of and behind the scenes; they clearly have a formula that works. I found the section delineating the show's plot structure especially interesting. The crime scene photographs are top notch as well. Graphic, yes, but expertly composed and realistic. Jessica Burstein (the co-writer and photographer) is a true artist. This book is a must have for all Law & Order fans!
Another One.......2003-10-23
As I turned the first page in this book I was a bit surprised. No amazing things we never knew of anything. However, I did find the Post Mortem interesting.

Book Description
Celebrated accounts of lawless towns that relied on the extra-legal justice of armed citizens and hired gunmen are part of the enduring cultural legacy of the American West. This image of the frontier has been fueled for more than a century by historians—both amateur and academic—and by various popular images. In the twenty-first century, Great Plains communities continue to perpetuate this image with tourist attractions and events that pay homage to their “lawless” past. But these romanticized depictions of the violent frontier do not accurately portray the legal culture of most early Great Plains communities.
Law and Order in Buffalo Bill’s Country is a case study of law and legal culture in Lincoln County, Nebraska, during the nineteenth century. Mark R. Ellis argues that nascent nineteenth-century Great Plains communities shared an understanding of the law that allowed for the immediate implementation of legal institutions such as courts, jails, and law enforcement. A common legal culture, imported from New England and the Midwest, influenced frontier communities to uphold traditions of law and order even in the “wild and wooly” frontier community of North Platte, Nebraska. This study is one of the first to examine legal institutions on the Great Plains. By setting aside the issue of a violent frontier West and focusing instead on community building and legal institutions, this study presents a very different image of the frontier-era Great Plains.

Book Description
Law and the Order of Culture is an outstanding collection of essays that explores the cultural creation of legal meaning, addressing interpretive processes within the law as well as the social constitution of legal doctrine. Originally published in Representations, these essays are at the center of the "law and literature" movement which exemplifies a burgeoning literature in feminist jurisprudence, critical legal studies, and other work that has focused on law as evidence of cultural orderings. For this edition Robert Post has written a new introduction, proposing an analytic framework for this literature and discussion of the seven essays contained within the book.
Ranging over a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives, the contributors to the volume address such central issues as the construction of legal normativity, interpretive theory and practice in constitutional law, the function of legal metaphors, the interpretive foundations of the law/fact distinction, and the role of politics in contemporary critical legal studies. Law and the Order of Culture will attract a broad and eclectic readership across many disciplines.
