A world-famous luxury brand, financial skullduggery, vicious family quarrels ending in a sensational murder: the Gucci story just couldn't be juicier, and former Women's Wear Daily correspondent Sara Gay Forden does full justice to its gossipy appeal. Guccio Gucci opened his first leather-goods store in Florence in 1921, but it was his son Aldo who expanded the company overseas and made products like the Gucci loafer and the Flora scarf international symbols of status and affluence. Aldo's sons, his brother Rodolfo, and Rodolfo's son Maurizio, all of whom also worked in the family business, didn't always appreciate Aldo's imperious ways, and corporate board meetings often ended with ashtrays and Gucci handbags flying. Things got so bad in the early 1980s that Aldo's renegade son Paolo made public financial documents that very nearly sent his father to jail for tax fraud. Even more lurid was the 1995 execution-style murder of Maurizio, followed by the conviction in 1998 of his ex-wife Patrizia for ordering the hit. Meanwhile, CEO Domenico De Sole and creative director Tom Ford were transforming Gucci from a family-run company into a modern corporation once again on the cutting edge of fashion and marketing. Forden makes the business story as dramatic as the Guccis' personal squabbles (and of course the two were often interconnected) in a highly entertaining family biography that doubles as a savvy business history. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
Did Patrizia Reggiani murder her ex-husband, Maurizio Gucci, in 1995 because his spending was wildly out of control? Did she do it because her glamorous ex was preparing to marry his mistress, Paola Franchi? Or is there a possibility she didn't do it at all?
In this gripping account of the ascent, eventual collapse, and resurrection of the Gucci dynasty, Sara Gay Forden takes us behind the scenes of the trial and exposes the passions, the power, and the vulnerabilities of the greatest fashion family of our times.

Intense reading........2007-10-01
This is a very interesting book about the Gucci family, but it at times delved too much into all the business and acquisitions. It got at times really complexed. Having said that, it was a really good and interesting book. It was almost as if the author didn't want the story to end. I am glad I read it.
Stick to magazines, Ms. Forden.......2007-07-03
Yes, the Gucci story is intriguing. And yes, Ms. Forden provides some historical facts. But remember, this is a book. It should be readable. Ms. Forden's constant and trivial inclusion of far too much 'stuff' is more annoying than enlightening.
This book could be condensed into 200 pages. Thoughtfully written and entertaining by someone other than Ms. Forden. It is a laborious task to tread through the boring an completely unnecessary details. Ms. Forden, no one cares about the work history of then-Head-of BergdorfGoodman.
Poorly written, this book is one long magazine article. Paragraph after paragraph of unnecessary filler. I suggest you find some other way to capture the history of the Gucci company.
I love this book.......2007-03-10
The subtitle said it all: "A sensational story of murder, madness, glamour and greed". The perfect combination for a successful novel that in reality has been real life. Read it!
Quality Product, Quality Book.......2007-01-16
I have inherited and purchased a few Gucci pieces, and have been so fond of the quality of their products that I thought I would read this book as a "light read." I was completely surprised by the first chapter that I just kept on turning the pages. It's anything but a light read, but a great read! This book really does have it all, including a tremendous education into the fashion empire. I also love the Italian detail and family disfunction. The author did a fantastic job of weaving the intimate details of a family, a business, and a family business. I have not lost an ounce of respect for the Gucci product, in fact I am more of a fan. Blood, sweat, and tears.
A Passion for Fashion..........2005-09-10
The House of Gucci reads like a soap opera in book form. Dramatic elements involving the fashion industry, business, and a dysfunctional family are deftly interwoven into a book that is impossible to put down. This novel is a perfect example of how power and greed can lead to the downward spiral of an outwardly- perfect family. Forden writes in a way that would keep any of a number of people riveted, including the fashionistas, the business- savvy, and those who are simply fond of the Italian culture. I have not hesitated in recommending this book to friends and family.

Multiplatinum-selling gangsta rapper, serial marijuana abuser ... and God-fearing family man? That's how Snoop Dogg tells it in Tha Doggfather, a straightforward (by his lights, anyway) telling of his own story. From slinging crack in the ghetto of Long Beach, California, to rapping the tales that brought hip-hop to a new level commercially in the early '90s, to a murder charge that he beat in 1996, this is Snoop's story. Many of the facts won't surprise, though his candor might; the former Calvin Broadus isn't much interested in apologizing, even for things he might have done that potentially conflicted with his current goal to "increase the peace." Some of the guy's pronouncements would fit right in on the milder-mannered daytime talk shows ("God is on your side and... He cares about you trying the best you can, no matter who you are"), while others are so edgily funny he hasn't even managed to fit them into a rap ("there's nothing more dangerous than a Sherm head with an attitude," he says of those whose high of choice is a cigarette dipped in embalming fluid). Snoop cautiously criticizes now-imprisoned former Death Row Records head Suge Knight while skirting the hard questions about friend Tupac Shakur's death after a Las Vegas shooting incident. Some things, it seems, are a little hard even for tha Doggfather to ponder. --Rickey Wright
Book Description
This is a tale of a young man's struggle against a system that consigned him to a destiny of poverty, crime, and hopelessness from birth. Set against the mean streets of L.A.'s South Bay 'hoods, the book is populated by a cast of vivid characters, including Tupac Shakur, Snoop's one true friend and musical soulmate, cut down at the beginning of a brilliant career, and Suge Knight, whose Death Row Records brought street-level credibility--and gangland tactics--into the corporate suites of the entertainment industry.
From the Crip gang members who recruited Snoop virtually off the playground to the pimps and players, whores and hustlers who formed his extended family on the streets and behind prison walls, Tha Doggfather offers a scathing, unexpurgated look at life on the edge in a modern urban jungle. Snoop's rise to the pinnacle of rap stardom is chronicled, along with his nearly career-ending arrest and trial for a murder he didn't commit.
Raised to the pinnacle, brought to the brink, Snoop Dogg eventually found sanity and salvation in his relationship with Shantay Taylor, his high school sweetheart. Married in 1997, the couple started a new life with their two young sons, even as Snoop's career reached new heights in his creative collaboration with Master P and No Limit Records.

SNOOP DOGG.......2007-10-05
WELL I READ THIS BOOK AND IN MY OPINION GROWING UP IN THE STREETS OF CHICAGO, YES DRUGS, SHOOTINGS ETC...THIS DIDN'T SEEM LIKE ANYTHING NEW TO ME, SO HE SOLD DOPE, GOT FAMOUS AND NOW LIVES LARGE. END OF STORY, MY LIFE WAS MUCH ROUGHER, HE HAD A GOOD HOME FROM WHAT IT SEEMS, C'MON GOOD IN SCHOOL, GRADUATES? PEOPLE I KNEW WERE LUCKY TO MAKE IT TO HIGH SCHOOL, WORK WAS FIRST IF YOU HAD TO SURVIVE. HE IS SO COMMERCIAL! THIS IS SO PHONY OR SOMETHING, RAGS TO RICHES? HE CHOSE TO BE BAD HE SAID IT IN HIS BOOK, HE WANTED TO BE THE THUG THAT HE WAS AND NOW I SEE HIM LIKE A MAMA'S BOY WHO JUST WANTED TO BE A PUNK AND THAT IS IT, I THINK HE SHOULD HAVE KEPT HIS STORY TO THE KIDS IN LONG BEACH, LOTS OF FOLKS GREW UP THIS WAY OR WORSE, HE JUST GOT A RECORD DEAL.

Fantastic.......2006-08-16
I am a real dogg fan and I just loved this book. Snoop has worked hard for everything he has. And his lovely wife stood beside him all the way. You go Dogg!!
Very confused book, very confused man.......2006-03-19
Snoop tries to please everyone with his tale. He wants to make his momma proud by talking about God and spirituality, but he wants to continue his gangsta facade. In the end it comes out completely hypocritical by him essentially saying, "I'm doin God's work by pimpin these mutha ***** ho's, N***!"
The book has it's moments. If Snoop wasn't interesting, why would I have bothered reading about him? But this a book to sleep walk through. Written on a 5th grade reading level, it made for good toilet time.
Don't expect anything profound, nothing truly revealing, and you won't be disappointed. It's simply a PR work.
Are you for real.......2005-03-15
In this story are you trying to say that you died and the devil would make you rich and famous if you gave him your soul and you agreeded? Or is that another book? If its this book then i rate it a 1 and that's that. I wish there was a no star(0)or negative 5 but all the choice I have is 1 so whatever.
- God's sunshine
could be worse..........2004-01-31
Does anyone out there understand what a Gost Writer is? I suppose not... A gost writer is someone that writes peoples books for them. If only a famous personality could actually go out and write a best selling book all by themself. In a perfect world...
But setting this aside, Snoop's literary creation isn't that bad. I think he contradicts himself entirly too much,. but what can I say? It frustrates me to bump his almums and hear him drawling on about Thug this and Thug that, only to go out and write some preachy tale about how gangs and drugs are wack.
However, for some reason or another, I respect Snoop as an artist and a family man.
And despite the fact that his new stuff sucks, his book was sitll partially enlightening.
Peace out.
Book Description
Crime Scene Golgotha approaches Jesuss crucifixion from the perspecitive of a crime scene investigator: What do we know is fact? What can be historically documented? What can we deduce may have happened? Taking the popular CSI television dramas as inspiration, Crime Scene Golgotha is a direct reaction to Mel Gibsons much talked about movie The Passion of the Christ. Ian Wilson systematically outlines what is known about Jesuss trial and crucifixion, as well as where art and the movies have gone astray. His investigative methods include eyewitness testimony (that of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), archeology, medical and forensic findings, and history, which systematically describe the most famous murder in history.
Customer Reviews:
Brief, compelling story of the crucifixion .......2006-08-29
Ian Wilson has written the most vivid book I have read on the crucifixion of Christ. Capitalizing on the success of Mel Gibson's movie, "The Passion of the Christ," and using the TV program "CSI" (Crime Scene Investigation) as a model Wilson looks at the crucifixion as a detective might. That sounds hokey in the telling --but it works well in constructing a story in which the facts are gathered and evaluated, and mixed with the author's speculation.
Wilson's story is as bloody and shocking as Gibson's movie, with which he differs on many points. His description of the process of crucifixion will turn your stomach. He approaches Jesus's suffering as a police investigator: what were the consequences of being beaten by the Pharisees and scourged by Roman soldiers? What physical damage was caused by nails being driven through his feet and hands and a spear piercing his side?
Wilson places a lot of faith, probably misplaced, in the authenticity of the shroud of Turin but points out persuasively the similarities in the wounds inflicted on Jesus and the marks on the shroud. He also makes the case that other relics of the crucifixion may be authentic, including a placard written by Pontius Pilate that Jesus was forced to carry with him on his way to the cross. He briefly goes into speculation about how these relics might have been preserved -- and dismisses carbon 14 tests that show the shroud dates from the Middle Ages rather than 30 AD.
Unlike most authors, Wilson has the audacity to examine head-on the evidence for the resurrection -- the most unlikely and inexplicable event of Western history -- and he does so convincingly, even to my skeptical, rational, modern mind (so we describe ourselves). There are books designed to shake the faith of the believers; this book is designed to shake the doubt of the unbelievers. For the secular or religious reader, "Murder at Golgotha" is a thought-provoking read.
Smallchief
Too Many Assumptions.......2006-08-01
One of the first lessons in any crime scene investigation is to assume nothing. Unfortunately "Murder at Golgotha" does exactly that. Wilson uses dubious claims and assertions throughout his book, which make his central premise almost laughable. The central fallacy is that the author backs up his scant findings using the Shroud of Turin as an authentic relic. The Shroud itself continues to be the most controversial relics in the Christian faith, but it is controversial because the validity of it is still in question. In 1988, the Shroud was tested using a carbon dating procedure, and it was found to date sometime to the High Middle Ages. Even if one assumes that the Shroud is real, you must then make a further assumption that the radioactive effect of the resurrection produced the image on the cloth. Not only does Wilson make these several assumptions, he treats the Shroud as authentic, without any attempt whatsoever to back up this rather dubious claim. Wilson should have stuck with the evidence that we can scientifically verify, such as the bones of a man that was crucified that was found in 1968.
Also, it is understandable to rely on the testimonies of the gospel writers, but relying on the travels of Helena, the mother of Constantine, to back up the true site of the cross, is truly crass. Wilson also does not explain why, for instance, that for all the thousands that were killed by crucifixion in the Roman Empire, only one remain was ever found. Of course, biblical scholar John Dominic Crossan's theory is that there are no remains, because crucified persons were thrown in a garbage dump where wild dogs fed on the remains, thus destroying the evidence.
This is not to say that Wilson does not bring up interesting points however. For instance, his explanation of rigor mortis after the crucifixion is particularly compelling. However, after writing about the whole effect of rigor mortis, and how the burial team had to compensate for this, Wilson instead says that this theory further backs up the validity of the Shroud. Overall, Wilson essentially rehashes old arguments, with this book serving little better then a companion guide to a History Channel documentary about the crucifixion.
Like A CSI Episode!.......2006-04-29
This book reads like a csi story. It starts off giving a profile of the victim and It goes on to give an account of his trial and death and all the while exploring the politics and causes of his (jesus)death. It also shows how hollywood(especially the mel gibson movie)got it wrong. This is a great read and I highly recomend It!
Book Description
In May of 1946, Alcatraz was rocked by the most sensational and bloody escape attempt in the island's history. Six convicts obtained guns and took nine guards hostage, one of whom was the author's father. Before the uprising was quelled, two guards and three prisoners lay dead and fifteen officers had been wounded. Alcatraz Justice chronicles the trial that followed. Drawing from his background as a litigation attorney with thirty-five years of jury trial experience, Ernest Lageson gives life to the drama played out by the four principal lawyers.
The trial came to have almost as much drama as the crime. Sitting on the bench was a judge who, it could be argued, was prejudicial to the prosecution, and who berated one young defense attorney mercilessly in front of the jury. The most experienced of the defense team was ill-prepared and self-aggrandizing with the press. One of the defendants was severely mentally challenged who also had been diagnosed schizophrenic. In a dramatic, four week courtroom battle, the surviving insurgents were found guilty of first-degree murder. This book gives frank and disturbing insight into our criminal justice system.

The Great Trial of Alcatraz *****.......2006-06-24
This is the fascinating sequel to Lageson's book titled "Battle of Alcatraz". No other book covers the subsequent trial of the 1946 bloody escape attempt to the same degree of detail as this book. I recommend this book as a companion book to any of the other books that gives the history of this interesting escape. The book explicitly focuses on the trial of the surviving convicts from this botched escape and their legal journey that leads directly to the electric chair at San Quentin.
The book is nicely written and a fascinating cover to cover read. I also enjoyed Lageson's first book on the Battle of Alcatraz, although it wasn't necessarily my favorite book written about this bloody escape and riot. I would recommend Don Denevi and Phillip Bergen's Alcatraz '46 as a better source. Michael Esslinger also wrote a marvelous book on the entire history of Alcatraz, and it also covers these events in fine detail and has hundreds of photos. If you have interest in the Battle of Alcatraz escape plot and the events following, you owe it to yourself to read Alcatraz Justice. I am a UCLA graduate student and have been reading on Alcatraz as a study work. I'm reviewing several Alcatraz books that I read and hope to assist others with common reading interests. Please see my other reviews on Alcatraz. I highly recommend this book. It is a great study work of this escape attempt.

A first hand account of the trial involving the death of Selena Quintanilla Perez, the Tejano music superstar whose murder sent shockwaves throughout the music world and beyond.
Customer Reviews:
Justice for Selena.......2006-11-06
Excellent book, but very long. (Held my attention, but took awhile to get through it.) This is not a Selena fan book - it's strictly about the trial of her assasin. If you are interested in court proceedings, and happen to be a Selena fan, then this is a great book for you.
A Real Page-Turner..........2006-03-13
and I'm not being sarcastic. There is nothing "new and earth-shattering" about Selena or her family; it is what it says it is - a book about the trial. What you learn, though, is how much more there really was and how differently the trial appeared to be going from the prosecutors' and, my guess is, the defense's perspectives than it was from the media's. Mr. Valdez even lets us know what happened after the trial in the appeals that Yolanda filed and why she wasn't eligible for the death penalty.

Too Late to Say Goodbye: A True Story of Murder and Betrayal
ASIN: 1552633403 |
Book Description
Young, attractive Evelyn Dick has been sentenced to hang for the murder of her husband, John, whose torso has been found on Hamilton Mountain. His head and limbs have been severed from his body and burned in the furnace of Evelyn's home by her father. The murder trial of Evelyn Dick, one of Canada's most infamous murderers, grabbed headlines across the country in 1946 and 1947. Represented by J.J. Robinette in the ensuing trial, Dick acquitted in what turned out to be one of Canada's most fascinating murder trials ever. However, during the murder investigation police found a suitcase containing the body of Evelyn's baby boy, encased in cement. The best Robinette could do on that charge was a verdict of manslaughter for which she served eleven years in penitentiary. Evelyn Dick's whereabouts have been unknown to the public since her release from prison. If she is alive today, she would be 79 years old. Where has she gone? Could she be living somewhere under an assumed identity? As someone's next-door-neighbour? Writer and world-renowned journalist Brian Valle, after several interviews with police chiefs and journalists who covered the original case, has written a spine-tingling account of what is one of Canada's most infamous murder trials and investigations. With never before published material, The Torso Murder follows up where the criminal system left off. It is a captivating and not-to-be missed read. A one-hour documentary on the life of the famous Torso murderer, and a made-for-television movie will air on CTV in Spring, 2002.

Book Description
This is the absorbing, touching story of a lonely boy from a troubled family who found the secret of making people laugh - and dreamed of becoming a comedy star.
When Jim Carrey's father (himself a frustrated performer) lost his job, the whole homeless family was enlisted to work as night cleaners at a factory in exchange for lodging in a strange suburb. Scrubbing washrooms by night turned Jim Carrey into a desperate and angry school dropout, and made Jim determined to succeed in a new life.
Jim developed a series of celebrity impressions that led to his comedy club breakthrough when he was 19. But his drive for the big time took him to Los Angeles, where he scuffled in comedy clubs and then landed a role in the hip TV series "In Living Color." That paved the way for a phenomenal movie breakthrough with the surprise hit "Ace Ventura", "Pet Detective." More hits followed: "Mask," "Dumb and Dumber" and "Liar, Liar."
Now, after his dramatic performance in "The Truman Show," Jim Carrey's career is taking an intriguing new direction. His role as the late comedian Andy Kaufman in the forthcoming "Man In The Moon" is already being described as Oscar material this March. Hilarious and poignant,
Jim Carrey: The Joker Is Wild tells for the first time the full, astounding inside story of Jim Carrey's bumpy rise to stardom.
Customer Reviews:
A joy.......2006-07-27
A JC fan, I enjoyed this well-written book very much. It's amazing what people can do with their lives with encouragement and humor. I recommend people read this book.
Surviving Through Poverty.......2004-06-01
Growing up in poverty is not an easy thing to do. You wouldn't think that very many, if any, "famous people" would grow up being poor. Well, Jim Carrey is one of many who did. Growing up for him wasn't easy at all. It was always in his genes to become a comedian. But his first gig didn't go as planned, it was very disappointing. He dropped out of school at the age of sixteen, trying to pursue his career in comedy. He continued to go to the club where he was made a fool of. His comedy breakthrough came at the age of 19. His big jump off was when he got a role in a TV series, "In Living Color." This got him started for other movies such, as "Mask," and "Liar, Liar." As they all say, the rest is history.
The thing that I liked most about Jim Carrey, was that he never gave up on his dream of being a comedian. At home, everybody thought that he was the funniest person ever. But when he went to his first gig at Yuk-Yuk's, it wasn't what he thought. It was a humiliating time for him. But he didn't let that stop him. When he was a little older, he went back to that club and performed again. He then became a regular there. This proves to show you that you should never give up on your dreams. Just because you have one bad night or act, it doesn't mean you have to give up on your dream.
Something that disturbed me about Jim Carrey was that he dropped out of school. I mean, it was his own choice but then again it sends the wrong message to children. By him doing this, and kids reading it he is saying that you can still make even if you drop out of school. The thing is that we want kids to stay in school and get an education for themselves. But people make their own decisions in life. It is up to them and what they want to do in the future.
The Review.......2003-04-30
I am a big Jim Carrey Fan and reading this book I realized I didn't know as much about him as I thought i did. This biography was well written and very detailed, you get to know Jim as you go through the book, from his succeses, his failures, his life as a celebrity. you also get to know how much he struggled over the years and how hard it was for him and just how hard it is to become a comedian. I definitley reccomend redaing htis book, it is good from the minute you open and close it from cover to cover.
If you like good writing . . ........2002-07-14
Then find another book. Mr. Knelman seems incapable of painting his prose anything but purple. I couldn't get past the first chapter. There's a good book about Mr. Carrey waiting to be written; but this isn't it.
The REAL Jim Carrey.......2002-04-02
For anyone who thinks Jim Carrey led a charmed life before getting where he is today, this book is a definite read. It opens a lot of doors into understanding his acting style, why he does comedy and why he is an actor.....he lives for attention and approval, and all his fans are happy to give that to him. He came from the school of REAL hard knocks. This makes me admire him all the more for perserving in the face of multiple adversities and giving us the performances we love to watch over and over. My personal favorite of all is The Truman Show, and the Majestic is right up there too. Catching up on his old films after reading this book, and I can see where he was coming from in his life at the time. The author did a tremendous job of writing this bio and I truly thank him for shedding light on someone I thought was "just another pretty face"....a wonderful bio on Mr. Carrey. I hope he gives some thought to bringing it up to date at some point. Jim Carrey I salute you for your wonderful acting. Great book; simply great.
Book Description
In 1924, wealthy Chicago teenagers Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb murdered 14-year-old Bobby Franks, motivated only by their desire to experience the act. The twentieth century's first "thrill killing," the crime inspired one of history's most publicized trials as attorney Clarence Darrow successfully defended the killers against the death penalty.
