3 out of 5 stars Good but but outdated........2007-09-04

I used this for my 5 MICU month rotations. It was useful but a lot of the material is dated. Early Goal Directed Therapy is not in here and the pressor we use at our facility are not dicussed in great detail here. I actually found it more helpful for my cardiac critical care rotations.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference book.......2007-06-04

Very thoroughly written. Some sections come in very handy during SICU rotations. The concepts are explained in a plain easy to read format.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent book.......2007-04-04

An excellent consult's material for all physicians, not just for critical care doctors,i work in ER and have found an important knowledgement source for my area. I recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible for any critical care practitioner.......2007-03-24

Simply stated, this is THE book for critical care medicine. A unified overview of critical care is presented in a succinct manner. Difficult physiological concepts are broken down into simple concepts. I would argue that this text is mandatory reading for any physician, not just intensivists. Critiques about Dr. Marino's "controversial" views are simply unfounded--the book is exceptionally well-referenced. I have never purchased a medical text with as much value. Dr. Marino's website is a nice bonus--it's free and you can link to references very quickly.

5 out of 5 stars a good txtbook .......2007-01-24

very easy to read, the work of Marino as an important charact. i.e. all the chapters 're written by the author. This make a "compact" point of view abt. the issues treated.
the book is evidence base oriented but well balanced with some common sense observation in clinical practice.
It is not pragmatic like other txt of the same carature, for exp Bongard's Current (waiting for a new edts of a very good basical txtbook), but probabily the philosophy of the author 's not the same.
Many items were not treated directely. The acute pancreatitis 's treated not so in depht, the diabetic KA was treated in the chapter of acid base disease. Of note, there is an important window abt. the phisiopatology.
All and all the txt is an authoritative source for the initiation of the crit care phis., the first step before the study of more heavy txtbooks (hall; parillo-my preferred but probabily is a personal opinion;civetta- not new edts in view).
The new edts is very uptodate and the biblio voices has a Very high citation index.

The search subjects for this book bill it as "secondary" and "high school" language arts. After receiving the book, I can see that it is very much for elementary level teachers. All the pictures, examples, and suggested resources are elementary level.

The book does look like an excellent resource for elementary teachers.

Book Description

IN combating terror, America can no longer depend on its conventional military superiority and the use of sophisticated technology. We are fighting guerrilla wars, against insurgents hidden in remote regions, often deep among the local population. In battles such as these, squadrons of billion-dollar bombers and naval fleets mean much less than on-the-ground intelligence and the ability to organize local forces. That’s why, more than ever before, we need men like those of the Army Special Forces—the legendary Green Berets.
In Chosen Soldier, Dick Couch—a former Navy SEAL widely admired for his books about SEAL training and operations—offers an unprecedented view of the training of the Army Special Forces warrior. Each year, several thousand enlisted men and several hundred officers volunteer for Special Forces training; less than a quarter of those who apply will complete the course. Chosen Soldier spells out in fascinating detail the arduous regimen these men undergo—the demanding selection process and grueling field exercises, the high-level technical training and intensive language courses, and the simulated battle problems that test everything from how well they gather operational intelligence to their skills at negotiating with volatile, often hostile, local leaders.
Green Berets are expected to be deadly in combat, yes, but their responsibilities go far beyond those of other Special Operations fighters; they’re taught to operate in foreign cultures, often behind enemy lines; to recruit, train, and lead local forces; to gather intelligence in hostile territory; to forge bonds across languages and cultures. They must not only be experts in such fields as explosives, communications, engineering, and field medicine, but also be able to teach those skills to others. Each and every Green Beret must function as tactical combat leader, negotiator, teacher, drill sergeant, and diplomat.
These tasks require more than just physical prowess; they require a unique mix of character, intelligence, language skills, and—most of all—adaptability. It’s no wonder that the Green Berets’ training regimen is known as the hardest in the world. Drawing on his unprecedented access to the closed world of Army Special Forces training, Dick Couch paints a vivid, intimate portrait of these extraordinary men and the process that forges America’s smartest, most versatile, and most valuable fighting force.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-09-20

Very well written and hard to put down. An excellent insight into SF traing from beginning to end. I've seen many books on the subject of SF traing but none as complete as this one. WOW, brings back a lot of memories! This is a MUST READ for anyone thinking of going SF.
Great job Mr. Couch!

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-08-31

This book is great! Of course, I am partial since it is from my son's training and all those with him. I believe anyone interested in finding out just what a special type of man it takes to become a Green Beret, you will thoroughly enjoy it. Throughout this book the author made it possible for me to go through each part of his training and feel even more proud of not only him, but all the men that would dedicate themselves to such unbelievable physical and mental training, dedication, and tasks to learn and become one of the strongest, smartest, educated and trained special forces for our country and for our freedom.

5 out of 5 stars book review.......2007-08-23

One of the most interesting books about soldiers I've ever read - it certainly sheds quite a different light on SF training and the quality of our people.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but needs a step back?.......2007-08-14

No question Couch does a great job explaining the incredible training and selection of SF soldiers. He knows the ground and covers it well. But, the role of SF seems to have changed, and could be viewed with some thoughtful questions. Has the SF mission been changed and more emphasis placed on their being small scale Ranger units or substitute CIA para-military units? Has the Blackwater thought process taken over? The SF I knew was "the best and the brightest". True warriors who knew that sometimes having to shoot it out was the first sign of a failed mission. I'd love to see Couch explore what the role of these heros has evolved into.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, explains the challenges an SF canidate must endure........2007-08-05

Overall great read! As an american soldier with a significant time in service, both stateside and overseas, I found this book to be very informative and motivating. It shares with the reader all phases that an SF canidate must endure to earn the sacred Special Forces tab and be able to call himself a special operator. I have been considering a life in SF and I think this book might have pushed me over the edge and motivated me enough to try out. As I said before, great read and very well written.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for beginning teachers.......2007-08-23

Mrs. Collins gives you a classroom teachers perspective on guiding yourself and your students down a path to discovering reading, readers and the step readers undergo to comprehend what they read. This is an easy read because Mrs. Collins narratives transforms you from the pages of the book to front and center in your classroom, working with your students.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, minute by minute of how to teach Reading Workshop.......2007-08-10

This is an excellent source to guide teachers on how to teach Reading Workshop. It gives dialogue on mini lessons and ideas of how to set up your room. It is a must read for Reading Workshop teachers. It is a down to the minutes guide of what to do.

3 out of 5 stars Seems great--on paper.......2006-07-02

This book is one that may seem to have great ideas--in theory! In practice? Well, that's another thing. There are a number of things I agree with wholeheartedly: think-pair-share, conferencing in which you meet with the child rather than vice versa, opportunities to immediately apply the concepts and strategies of a lesson, time to "debrief".... BUT, my teaching cannot be via a multitude of mini lessons--the scope of what must be covered in a school year does not allow for this. I also felt that the author's approach was a bit "me, me, me" with the children; she recommends the teacher making the summation in order to control time. In this vein she also mentions the importance of student participation yet she wants to strongly control this. When children share, it is good for the whole group to be included rather than just one partner--yes, this takes some time and it is an art to keep things moving smoothly but many ideas can be shared. This is a great opportunity to have children exposed to thinking outside the box or, perhaps, outside their comfort zone. I agree with the author that young children appreciate a routine but to do the same thing day in and day out can encourage the children to begin to perform like automatons. With today's demands for differentiation, this would create a lot of extra work for teachers.
I felt that this book presented concepts that looked wonderful on paper but would leave holes in practice. Now, I am NOT bashing the book. I look at it as I do when attending professional teaching conferences--if I can walk away with one or two useful ideas to implement in my classroom, I am satisfied. I did get a few ideas to try out in my own classroom. The book did not prove to be what I had expected but I have not come away empty-handed. It would be futile to expect to fit someone else's classroom management, procedures, and scheduling into your classroom and I did not embrace this book expecting that to happen. I am not a new teacher but I am always looking for new ideas. I did get just that; however, it required a lot of time spent reading on my part so if I knew the content of this book a bit better I would not have purchased it. (It was one of the books Amazon recommended to me.)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for teachers launching Reader's Workshop!.......2006-07-01

This book is excellent for any teacher who is launching reader's workshop in their classroom. I will be teaching first grade this coming school year and have been reading this book to help me prepare. What I really love about the book is that it gives you a scope and sequence for what units of study you could teach throughout the school year, provides examples of mini-lessons you can teach, as well as being very explicit about what a reader's workshop mini-lesson should look like and what reader's workshop should look like in general. Kathy Collins writes in a way that all teacher can relate and includes some funny anecdotes about her own teaching-this is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2006-05-29

This was a great and useful book. It helps readers think about how to apply the reading workshop to the clasroom of young children filled with emerging readers. Collins writes in a conversational way with important suggestions and backround. She shares openly and intelligently how to do the work and relays how the plans worked in her classes. Very helpful and readable!

This book is a must for those who want to get involved in water treatment.

4 out of 5 stars Unit Operations and Processes in Environmental Engineering.......2000-01-10

Good and well organized book for a graduate class in environmental/sanitary engineering. Unlike the traditionally used book, it is organized for easy reference and study. It includes most of the unit processes to consider in the desing of wastewater and water treatment plants. I wish it would expand a litte more in the water part. The wastewater is covered very well. It is a good book to keep as a reference. Answer to key problems are provided for easiness of verification of process. Couple of formulas are outdated in the air transfer chapter, not major problem.

Book Description

******Recently Published!****** Unit Operations of Chemical Engineering, 7th edition continues its lengthy, successful tradition of being one of McGraw-Hill's oldest texts in the Chemical Engineering Series. Since 1956, this text has been the most comprehensive of the introductory, undergraduate, chemical engineering titles available. Separate chapters are devoted to each of the principle unit operations, grouped into four sections: fluid mechanics, heat transfer, mass transfer and equilibrium stages, and operations involving particulate solids.

Now in its seventh edition, the text still contains its balanced treatment of theory and engineering practice, with many practical, illustrative examples included. Almost 30% of the problems have been revised or are new, some of which cover modern topics such as food processing and biotechnology. Other unique topics of this text include diafiltration, adsorption and membrane operations.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Chemical Engineering Classic.......2006-09-07

Some prior reviewers are mistaken about this book being an annotation of Perry or of little value. The "unit operations" are the framework of chemical engineering. McCabe and Smith was the definitive work on unit operations when I was a student in the 1960's. Updated and with additional authors, it still is.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2006-03-02

Warren McCabe has written a unit operations book that is most adequately utilized for fluid mechanics. The separations sections are slightly abbreviated, and lack more refined details that might be found in a more specialized work. However, as a student in a separations course, I found myself referencing this book several times. The examples in the chapters were 'open-ended' enough to require real engineering problem-solving skills. Overall, an extremely well put-together text.

5 out of 5 stars fluid mechanics ,transprtation of fluids.......2000-06-16

it is the best books i have ever read in my semester ofchemical engineering. the topic i like the most, is transportation offluids .this book is recommended by my professor. the matter of turbulent flow and laminar flow is just fantastic.

thank you!

1 out of 5 stars This book is inadequte.......1999-09-01

I feel that this book is inadequte for students and professionals alike. It does not explain well how systems act in real life situations, like most academia books

4 out of 5 stars Good for students yet too general for professionals.......1999-04-30

I work in the chemical operations sector. I will highly recommend this book for 3rd or 4rth year future chemical engineers. It contains viable information on many units that they will just have to know about. However, I will not recommend it for working operation engineers. It is too general for us, it doesn't problem shoot units such as pumps and compressors. I don't think that I have much use for this book, specially that I own the Perry's Handbook.

5 out of 5 stars A must!!.......2004-11-07

This text is clearly one of the best in its field. It is well organized and very thorough. The organization and attention to detail make it a great referrence source and an easy read. It should be in anyone's library that takes of critically ill patients. I would highly recommend it for fellows in critical care medicine. The "Pretest" question and answer study guide that is a companion to this text is also excellent and a great tool for the critical care boards. I am anxiously awaiting the next edition.

5 out of 5 stars Principles of Critical Care.......2000-05-02

This is an excellent review of the most common problems found in the clinical practice of Critical Care. It helps with the initial assessment of the patient and formulates a systematic approach to the differential diagnosis and therapeutic plan. The bibliography is updated and it has detailed illustrations and diagrams. Certainly, recommended as reference for those persons involved in the management of Critical Care patients.

Book Description

Now the inspiration for the CBS Television drama, "The Unit."

Delta Force. They are the U.S. Army's most elite top-secret strike force. They dominate the modern battlefield, but you won't hear about their heroics on CNN. No headlines can reveal their top-secret missions, and no book has ever taken readers inside—until now. Here, a founding member of Delta Force takes us behind the veil of secrecy and into the action-to reveal the never-before-told story of 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-D (Delta Force).

Inside Delta Forece
The Story of America's Elite Counterterrorist Unit

He is a master of espionage, trained to take on hijackers, terrorists, hostage takers, and enemy armies. He can deploy by parachute or arrive by commercial aircraft. Survive alone in hostile cities. Speak foreign languages fluently. Strike at enemy targets with stunning swiftness and extraordinary teamwork. He is the ultimate modern warrior: the Delta Force Operator.

In this dramatic behind-the-scenes chronicle, Eric Haney, one of the founding members of Delta Force, takes us inside this legendary counterterrorist unit. Here, for the first time, are details of the grueling selection process—designed to break the strongest of men—that singles out the best of the best: the Delta Force Operator.

With heart-stopping immediacy, Haney tells what it's really like to enter a hostage-held airplane. And from his days in Beirut, Haney tells an unforgettable tale of bodyguards and bombs, of a day-to-day life of madness and beauty, and of how he and a teammate are called on to kill two gunmen targeting U.S. Marines at the Beirut airport. As part of the team sent to rescue American hostages in Tehran, Haney offers a first-person description of that failed mission that is a chilling, compelling account of a bold maneuver undone by chance—and a few fatal mistakes.

From fighting guerrilla warfare in Honduras to rescuing missionaries in Sudan and leading the way onto the island of Grenada, Eric Haney captures the daring and discipline that distinguish the men of Delta Force. Inside Delta Force brings honor to these singular men while it puts us in the middle of action that is sudden, frightening, and nonstop around the world.

5 out of 5 stars wisdom in defeat and humility in victory.......2007-07-12

David Mamet, in my edition of this book, now more than three years old, long before 'The Unit' came along, writes at the beginning:

"The great military novels have about them an ineffable air of sadness. [They] seem, both in scenes of combat and in the scenes of rest, depictions of a life heightened to the plateau of regret, longing, and loss. The great military memoirs, similarly, are a record of loss and its transmutation into compassion. [...] in Eric Haney's Inside Delta Force, we are welcomed into the curious, moving and persuasive philosophy of the soldier trying to find wisdom in defeat and humility in victory."

It's a comment that reflects the spirit of the contents, and which ultimately translates into the very cool TV series based on the book. I also admit, quite without shame that the characters of 'Phantom Strike Team' in my novel 'Fontaine' were definitely inspired by this account, which I found fascinating and quite un-put-downable; much like Michael Durant's 'In The Company of Heroes'.

I have no idea how 'real' and 'true' the things depicted here are, because I have no real evidence to back up whatever I believe. However, I would like to think--possibly wishfully, but why not?--that Orwell's 'rough men [who] stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm' aren't just a bunch of thugs, who just like to shoot people, but that they are like those guys; that they are grounded and have a sense of purpose, and that Mamet's comments are on the mark.

Again, without evidence for the 'truth', whatever that may be, I cannot tell; but I choose to think that Haney has done more than just show them in the best light; that even in the harsh light of day, it all basically holds true.

4 out of 5 stars How Delta Came to Be.......2007-07-09

I read a few other reviews of this book before buying it and find they were accurate. Haney tells about how Delta force came to be in interesting detail. The people that submit themselves to the Selection process really can only truly truly want the job. If you watch or have seen any episodes of "The Unit" you can see where story plot lines came from, but don't expect any detailed past mission stories.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book........2007-06-08

As usual, the same excellent quality and service that I have come to expect from Amazon. Book was great and recommend it to anyone thats interested in this type of stuff. Great compliment to "The Unit".

5 out of 5 stars Best 1st Person Spec.Ops. Account I have Read to Date.......2007-05-19

I initially was drawn to this book after seeing it credited as the inspiration for CBS's drama "The Unit". (I'm a sucker for marketing, huh?) This book was to be the first in a long line of military non-fiction works that I read recently and for me it's still one of the best. Haney isn't the GREATEST writer in the world but his style works well for the subject matter at hand and thankfully lacks some of the irritating macho-ness that plagues many other ex-military authors. What made the book great for me was the fact that because Haney was a recruit in Delta as opposed to one of the organizers, there is a sense of mystery and the unknown as he chronicles his progress through Selection and his early days in the unit. I also read Charlie Beckwith's book on Delta and thought this was the better read. The only thing I didn't like about the book was that Haney retired so many years ago that you are left wanting to know more about current ops, but that's not a criticism of the book itself, simply a lament on my part. Overall I'd highly recommend this to anyone interested in learning more about what drives these incredible individuals.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book. .......2007-05-18

Great read. I spent 28 years in the Army, many of them at Bragg and retired in 2003. Mr Mercer's comments about what he believes are fact and fiction as it pertains to the contents of this book are inaccurate and I would recommend he go back and do his research correctly this time.
