1 out of 5 stars Not of much value........2007-06-12

Very little useful information. If you planning a home theatre this book really doens't offer any information on design or component integration. Very basic in it's approach with references to VCR's and other dated technology.

5 out of 5 stars Great pocket book.......2007-01-17

As an proffesional I apreciate this book, it gives precise information. It is well written and on plain english as it's posiblle.

I recomending this book!

1 out of 5 stars Very Useful Reference.......2006-12-20

I bought this book as a quick reference for a Technical Support group I manage. We have a few dozen products that require an installer to run wires throughout a house. Unfortunately, a large majority of the calls I get are wiring related and this book provides tremendous insight into the problems created by improper wiring.

If you want to learn about wiring, this is the book to buy. I also bought the full book that goes with it. It must be good because I got the only paperback, and all the used hardback books are almost double the retail price.

From this guide you'll learn everything relating to wiring. You'll learn balanced vs unbalanced, ground loop isolation vs cross talk, and the list would almost be half as long as the pocket guide. Simply put, if your livlihood depends upon wiring, this book will help you a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars So much information in such a small space. Best of its Kind........2006-05-01

Belden is the king of cables and Stephen Lampen is a Belden Kingpin. This book is one-of-a-kind and is a must for anyone working with, or even remotely interested in audio, video, data and/or CATV cabling. It is essential, fundamental knowledge about using cables.

Nope, it's not for the "novis" but I believe a novice will find it interesting if you understand the concept that 2 wires make a circuit. Take your time with it and Google anything you don't understand. There are some complex topics in here but nothing you won't get your head around if you read it and think about it. It is presented in a good, logical progressive order.

Stephen makes it all readable with many interesting and amusing anecdotes and tidbits. The "Grounded Dog" story (p 363) is worth the price of the book alone.

I've been in broadcast Engineering for years and this book solved a few mysteries for me.

Check out the contents list to see if it's for you.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the novis........2005-09-07

I purchased this product with a novis knowledge of electronics. I could not understand one page. If you are a novis this is not the book for you.

Book Description

This text surveys the field of modern electronic media and beyond. Beyond, more than a word in the title, refers to the new technologies, regulations, programming, and competition that affect our world and the broadcasting industry. The authors of Broadcasting, Cable, the Internet and Beyond have three main goals for every edition: 1) to convey the excitement of the industry, 2) to provide a survey of the industry, and 3) presenting a readable text that makes even the most difficult information understandable. With new information and innovations added to an already strong foundation, this edition achieves each of these goals, again.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Engineer.......2007-09-06

This is a very good book for someone interested in the CATV industry.

It gives you a good explanation of the technologies that allow CATV companies the ability to provide all the services now available.

It does this in one book, so that you don't have to hunt through several books to find what you need, when you need it.

3 out of 5 stars comprehensive but major reservations.......2006-11-24

This encyclopedic reference appears to do a good job of spanning the tremendous range of technology comprising satellite transmission and reception ("transception"); head-end organization; regional and "last mile" distribution; and set-top box technology, steering (unfortunately) way clear of the hardware, firmware, and software issues associated with providing modern unidirectional and bidirectional digital services atop multiple tuners in home network (including up-and-coming IPTV) environments supporting slavable hard drives. HOWEVER, being an electrical engineer and, therefore, having naturally started with the chapter on modulation and analog detection, I was WOEFULLY disappointed. It is fine to author mathematical treatments with a heavy hand ("It is imperative that one understand ...," etc.), but one had better know what one is talking about. This is clearly not the case. Where mathematics are presented as putative groundwork for some forthcoming exposition, they are erroneous and weak. Irrelevant theorems from high-school trigonometry are cited as if they are the be-all and end-all of signal analysis. The description of run-of-the-mill Fourier analysis is flawed and terminologically imprecise. The Nyquist theorem is casually referred to as "Harry Nyquist's rule" and cited as if it were a side-effect rather than a vital principle--a principle that is clearly way beyond the authors' understanding, insofar as I never saw any development of the sampling theorem or the expansion of bandlimited functions in terms of sinc (no, NOT sync) pulses. Now, when I studied communication systems, it was critical to have a crystalline understanding of how the signal and power spectra morphed as one proceeds from block to block throughout the (analog or digital) system. Yet, the authors are unable to do this, muffing through vague mention of "X Hz of single sideband and Y Hz of double sideband" and obfuscatory, misleading diagrams of time-domain phenomena accompanied with similarly vague notions of orthogonal this or quadrature that but--you guessed it--steering clear of any precise mathematical exposition (a la Hilbert transforms or diagrams that clearly indicate signal spectra, satellite spectra, aliased sidelobes, etc.) while fumbling through discussions of "two layers" of filtering that attempt to lump transmission "filtering" and reception "filtering" into one logical task without asserting or fully executing any conceptual paradigm whereby the one logically inverts the other. Where is the sampling theorem? Where is the fundamental mathematical expression of amplitude modulation? Where is a clear diagram that demonstrates how the I, Q, and L analog TV signals are multiplexed? Why is there discussion of envelope detection without any mention of the Schwarz inequality? "Constellations" of QAM, QPSK, etc., "signals" are diagrammed without the merest mention of what one is actually looking at, viz., message vectors in Kotelnikoff space based upon an eigenvalue expansion achieved via Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization. What really blew me away, though, was--brief though it was--the most nonsensical statement of all: The authors were discussing various directions in digital compression, and I saw a subchapter heading entitled, "Fractals." I said to myself, "Wow! That's great! I wonder what they've managed and how." Well, the "explanation" was nothing more than, "Fractals are really useful; the only problem is in figuring out the equations." That's like a math student telling his teacher, "I've got the solution to the problem! The only thing I'm missing is the detailed algebraic expansion!"

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive (2nd Edition).......2005-08-23

Well done compilation that is approachable while covering a lot of ground. If you need one book that touches on all the technology aspects of the cable industry and can fit on your bookshelf, this is it. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent tutorial and reference.......2003-10-28

This book is a remarkable survey of a very broad field. It is necessarily somewhat superficial in its coverage of some of the more abstruse topics, but provides the necessary essentials an engineer needs to operate in the cable television environment. Unlike mere compendia of archival publications, this book has a consistent pedagogical viewpoint and notation. It is oriented towards practicing engineers, providing just enough theory to support successful problem solving. I recommend it to anyone working in the field.

5 out of 5 stars At last a fully comprehensive CATV handbook.......2001-03-07

In a quick growing market, and with daily technological improvements like cable television, the lack of a thoroughly comprehensive compilation was being noticed. This book, a kind of Bible for that specific area of telecommunications engineering, could approach a vast variety of technical and operational issues for the CATV industry. A vade mecum (lat. ¨goes with me¨, means essential) for every CATV engineer or technician.

5 out of 5 stars 9th Edition is coming out 10/16/2007.......2007-05-16

I think I've owned every edition of this book since 1978. It's been a staple in my library for years. It's a fantastic resource for tons of burning TV trivia questions. Looking forward to the new 9th edition in October 2007. Should be interesting to see the updates. Excellent book idea.

4 out of 5 stars Allou need to know - and then some.......2007-05-13

The title says it all.
This really is a complete reference to every network and cable TV show since 1946 up to the last date for this publication, around 2003.

All the favoutites are here that one may care to mention - from West Wing to Dallas, Star Trek to Bonanza, and others you may have forgotten - Gemini Man, AfterMASH anyone?

The strengths of this book are in the synopses which are entertaining and informtive at the same time, so this book is more than just a dry listing of information. Also included is an extensive index on such items as longest season runs, Neilsen numbers etc.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars FYI.......2007-05-01

An excellent addition to your library. I have heard that the 9th edition should be released in the fall of 2007.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent....however,.......2007-03-02

It's been almost 4 years since the 8th Edition came out. A lot has happened on TV since 2003--Lost? Criminal Minds? Deadwood? House? Heroes?...the list goes on. I hope the 9th Edition is just as informative.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows: 1946-Present, Eighth Edition .......2007-02-26

An excellent collection. It has settled many questions we have about what we were watching back then. With the weekly primetime schedules from the beginning to present, we obtain the program and then lookup all the information available on the subject and there is a lot to read about most of them!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An informative read..........2006-01-18

Reading this book and working through the cd won't exactly make you a broadcasting star, but it definitely guides you at the required talents and qualifications for conforming to industry standards.

The cd-rom consists of video and audio segments or snippets as they are quite short on the average; it includes voice commentaries, installation videos, teleprompters, and practice media for you to develop your skills.

The book is and entertaining read with chapters on the history of broadcasting, the various types of broadcasting( radio dj, television, cable etc), the great broacasters, interviews, the biology of the human voice mechanism, techniques and the like.

Overall this book is definitely helpful in guiding towards the broadcasting industry and could be useful for students of mass communication and media studies.

Book Description

Producer, pundit, and media critic Jeff Cohen offers a fast-paced romp through the three major cable news channels — Fox, CNN, and MSNBC — and delivers a serious message about their failure to cover the most urgent issues of the day. Propelled by amusing anecdotes featuring famous pundits and media personalities, Cable News Confidential highlights the foibles, hypocrisies, and absurdities Cohen witnessed at news organizations run by entertainment conglomerates.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Cohen explains my frustrations well.......2007-04-24

A big thanks to Jeff Cohen for confirming that I'm not crazy. He "found inside cable news was a drunken exuberance for sex, crime and celebrity stories, matched by a grim timidity and fear of offending the powers-that-be -- especially if the powers-that-be are conservatives. The biggest fear is of doing anything that could get you, or your network, accused of being liberal." If you keep in mind, it's not news (never was), then it makes it easier to swallow. After reading Cohen's account, you realize that Walter Conkrite would never get hired today in the face of fools like Chris Matthews, Sean Hannity, and Biff O'Really.

4 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-03-05

I really enjoyed reading this book, and highly recommend it to everyone...especially people who don't really understand what a joke this all is..and how it became to be such a complete farce and and absolute threat to Democracy and so many other things sane human beings 'round these parts cherish.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting read.......2007-01-04

A good read. Although the book felt a little short - I guess I'm used to novels - Cohen does get through his points without a lot of extra, unneeded pages. Some good anecdotes and references, and kept the story going at a good pace. You probably won't read this cover to cover in one sitting, but it still works read over a period of time.

5 out of 5 stars Review: Cable News Confidenial.......2006-11-11

An excellent insight into the inner workings of cable news. I had no prior understanding of the increadable bias that exists on cable TV news. I highly recomment this book!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A must read!.......2006-11-10

For anyone who watches cable news, Jeff Cohen's book is essential reading. He reveals how much corporations that own news outlets shamelessly distort the news. I hold this up there with Howard Kurtz's 2000 book "The Fortune Tellers."

Cable news has harmed the world, and reading these books will show you one of many ways they do so.
