Book Description

The phenomenon loosely termed "Bali style" has been the subject matter for countless books on art, architecture, and interior design. In this book, author and architect Gianni Francione showcases the new generation of Bali-style homes, interiors, and artifacts that utilize what he terms a new internationalism.

Even though the timeless, distinctive Balinese balé, open to a panorama of rice fields and the evening breeze, is still there, it may now be made in marble or stone. Similarly, present-day villas, resort bungalows, shops, restaurants, and other buildings are just as likely to use modernist techniques and materials as they are to utilize alang-alang and coconut wood.

Bali Houses presents this new departure in architecture, interior design, glassware, table settings, textiles, furniture, and furnishings in many never-before-photographed locations. It is a fitting sequel to Bali Modern.

5 out of 5 stars This is Bali condensed in a Book........2007-03-28

A beautiful book well balanced in terms of text and pictures. The quality of the pictures is second to none. Compared to other books about Balinese style mostly focused on interiors, this one captures not only the essence of the interiors but also open spaces and gardens.

5 out of 5 stars Sphisticated and Balanced.......2007-02-22

Great photography and awesome scenarios. It really brings the feeling of being in Bali. And the decorations show the artistic side of the new interiors of the open living. It inspires my clients when they come inside my furniture store. Of the books I have from Bali, this is certainly the one with the best pictures!

5 out of 5 stars Bali Houses Design.......2006-11-05

Being a Decorator, this comes in handy for clients who like the look of the Tropics. It's a complete book of ideas, design strategies, and an overall look into another world of comfortable, colorful, Paradise influence to bring a little joy to the reader.

5 out of 5 stars Balinese houses - paradise........2006-01-04

This is a genuinely fine book. The photographs are spectacular, with fine color and resolution.
The text isn't too in-depth about houses in Bali, but the pictures speak for themselves.
I wholeheartedly recommend it, got me?

Book Description

This book documents the transformation that Balinese architecture and interior design have undergone over the past five years. Cleaner lines, more imaginative use of space, A-frame roofs, and the use of stone, concrete, and ceramic roof tiles are increasingly visible along with the traditional coconut wood, teak, and thatching.

5 out of 5 stars There's no place like Bali..........2000-05-05

Many westerners have set up homes in Bali, which have long been a magnet for western culture-hound. Here, writer and photographer showcase what the island's most inspiring examples of contemporary residences, shops, restaurants and of course the beautiful resorts that Bali is renowned. The work is well researched, featuring architectural and interior detailing of cross cultural legacy and an amalgamation of both modern and traditional. The text includes little stories of origins and legends. And as always, Lucca Invernizzi Tettoni's superb photography, mostly outdoor shots of the creme de la creme of Bali's private and resort landscaped gardens. This work captured all parts of the Balinese tropical living experience, proving why Bali is often remembered as the place to rejuvenate the soul.

4 out of 5 stars Bali,Modern The Art of Tropical Living.......2000-04-03

This is just what the doctor ordered for enthusiasts of tropical decor and culture. By focusing on the use of modern (alibet, longer lasting) building materials with techniques designed to provide a tropical ambiance is neat. It's not something that I have found elsewhere. It would also be nice to provide some interior decorating schemes to be translated into the American shopping market using or importing accessories from the Bali region or using alternative sources for the "tropical" look from other areas, i. e., the British West Indies, the Caribbean, major U.S. catalogues, etc.

Thanks for the opportunity to comment.

Before opening Tropical Houses, hide your passport. As soon as you get a glimpse of these incredible houses nestled among lush tropical landscapes, you'll want to head straight to the airport. Author Tim Street-Porter spent more than 10 years traveling through Jamaica, Sri Lanka, Bali, Java, Mexico, and Belize, meeting the owners of these Shangri-las and taking interior and exterior photos. Tropical Houses offers intelligent, dreamy commentary and over 272 breathtaking full-color photos.

Visit the House of Iseh in Bali and sit in the verdant shadow of the sacred volcano Gunung Agung. Said writer Anna Mathews of the view from the terrace: "Once you have lived in this place you can never be the same again. You are driven mad by beauty." In Jamaica, imagine you're a guest at Good Hope. Originally a plantation, Good Hope is now a 10-room villa that overlooks the Queen of Spain valley and the Cockpit Mountains. To look at these provocative photos is to imagine yourself in another life--one where you lounge on the veranda while white-jacketed waiters quietly replace your empty rum-and-pineapple drink. The owners of these estates have taken great care (at great expense) to create private, tropical paradises. One of the most stunning is Taprobane, an incredible retreat dominating the tiny island of the same name. Built by Count de Mauny-Talvande, the house is "an octagonal villa that allowed for verandahs in every direction; a 1930s folly, which, with small gardens extending through the foliage to the overhanging edges, fully occupied the crest of his island."

The careful architecture and landscaping of these estates "opens a world of sensual experiences." When the sky is gray and you don't have time for a vacation, Tropical Houses will lift your spirits and quiet your wanderlust. --Dana Van Nest

Book Description

The ambient warmth of the tropics causes architectural distinctions between indoors and out to evaporate, along with the walls that divide them. Houses expand into the landscape, while the sights, sounds, and scents of nature waft through living spaces. Indeed, one of the pleasures of living in the tropics is an awakening of the senses that brings us closer to nature.

Internationally renowned photographer and writer Tim Street-Porter has spent more than ten years traveling through Bali, Java, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Belize, and Jamaica. This book's 272 stunning photographs, supported by Street-Porter's fascinating and informed commentary, capture the appeal and the meaning of the enviable dwellings he found in his journeys. It may be the outdoor bath, a sybarite's delight, with sun filtering through a frangipani tree . . . the deep-eaved verandah, where one sips coffee while contemplating the neighboring valley shrouded in early morning mist . . . or the thatch-roofed palapa, its main supports local tree trunks wrapped in strangler vine.

These wonderful expressions of vernacular architecture -- many the products of the world's finest architects and designers--nest in jungles, perch over volcanic cliffs, stand placidly beside lagoons, and exist always in harmony with the nature that envelops them. These are real places where people really live, but each seems suspended in a setting that is at once dreamlike and elemental.

Excellent book with something for all tastes. Beautiful pictures make you want to go home and decorate immediately.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Exotic.......2004-05-28

The cover is just a teaser to the exciting tropical houses Tim Street-Porter captures in this wondeful book. A real treat to exclusive tropical living around the world. Also an excellent reference to decorate in the tropical look. Street-Porter does it again as he did in Casa Mexicana. A book to enjoy over and over.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for Decorating Ideas.......2003-01-15

We are trying to get an "island" feel for our home and this book was the perfect reference. Not only are the pictures of the homes (inside and out) breathtaking, but there is enough detail about the decorating itself to be useful for our purpose. The only downside is that it makes you want to sell your current house and just travel the world staying in these amazing homes! Especially tempting is the contact information at the very end in case you actually want to rent one of them on vacation...

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2002-05-25

I found this to be a wonderful book - it has some amazing pictures. It affords you the opportunity to view some beautiful private houses that you are unlikely to be able to visit. Unlike some other books that focus primarily on houses in South East Asia, this one also features some great houses in Mexico and Jamaica.

5 out of 5 stars The Best in Tropical Houses.......2001-11-29

Tropical Houses takes you around the globe to find some of the most interestingly designed homes in the world. The photographs are at once detailed and lush. If you are going to buy one book on tropical interiors, this should be the one.

4 out of 5 stars Best of the Style books on Bali.......2000-06-12

Excellent photos of the best houses, building materials, gardens, fabric, crafts, and architectural details in Bali. Very beautiful as a coffee table book, quite useful as a style reference book.

The text is very nicely written, without repetition or fluff; it serves mainly to illuminate the huge variety of photographs. In other words, the reader will learn a little about Balinese geography, sensibility and culture from Walker, but not in intricate detail or with scholarly authority. I read it cover to cover in a couple of days, and felt it was a decent grounding in Bali style.

Author, editor and photographer should be praised for finding examples of all kinds of Bali style: garish, sublime, fancy, plain, funky, sophisticated, folksy, casual, formal, sacred.

A solid overview, useful to decorators, architects, mere Bali fans.

I never read this book, so I'm very happy to discover all the informations about architecture of the Pacific area, and I'd like to be more lucky and get that book in my shelves.

When I read the editorial reviews and the hardcover, I already fall in love (déja amoureux). my mind is risen when I get the opportunity to meet very nice things, when I read very nice descriptions, and mainly when I watch very nice pictures about very nicest, cutest houses.

I really look forward to get an exemplary of this book to enhance the richness of my mind!

may day, may day, may day! Help me to get it!

Overflowing with inspiring photography, this is a beautiful book! We also love the text appearing in English, German and French as well - it adds to the international appeal of the content. It is an incredible value for the price - we expected to pay twice as much. We have recently visited one of these homes, and the photos actually do it justice!

5 out of 5 stars Paradise Available!.......2006-03-28

LIVING IN BALI is more than just a pretty picture book, though the lush photography by Reto Guntli is superb. This is a romance with a place few have had the pleasure of experiencing - the tropical paradise still very much in place in Bali.

Author Anita Lococo wisely leaves most of the journey to the level of serenity encountered by the way of life, the state of mind, the natural beauty of the landscape, and the plethora of flowers and exotic foliage to the images that flood the pages of this very beautiful book edited by the always sensitive Angelika Taschen. Here is a mood, a spirit and a place that indeed does exist and the book allows us to enter the secrets of the contemplative life that results from the communal life with nature that rules the homes of Bali.

The writing is informative and gentle and the many full color photographs manage to transport the viewer in time and sensation to a Paradise Available. This is yet another in Taschen's fine collections of books intent on making us open our eyes and minds to the levels we all can achieve - with a little help from books like this. Grady Harp, March 06

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous and Succulant!.......2006-03-10

As most Taschen design books, Living in Bali does not pretend to be a literary read, in fact the blurbs are positively sparse! It is unapologetic in its display of huge and fantastic images of the types of homes which typify the tropical asian paradise abode, and makes a point that the space and atmospheres of the designs and ambience tranfer all that is necessary. It would have been refreshing if they could have stuck to just the amazing residences, but one can't complain when the hotels, such as Begawan Giri are literally breathtaking and dreamy. I found myself gasping continuously and just gazing for an embarrassing length of time at each layout. There is enough juice in this book to inspire you to create you own personal paradise. Even if you live in nyc, as I do! Well, even if it is only in your dreams! While there is some overlapping with other asian style publications from Taschen, they are mostly all very refreshing, as they include new shots and more indepth voyeurism. The quality of the beautiful, simply stunning photographs are commendable, and the layout manages but to be expansive and detailed. In my mind, there is no book which better exemplifies what defines and justifies Bali as the jewel in the crown of tropical asian style. Owning this book, is like owning your personal ticket to a journey which shows you what is possible in life, that reality and heaven can meet! um, yes - I recommend this book.

      Book Description

Tales from a Charmed Life is the last in a trilogy of works by Hildred Geertz exploring the complexity of Balinese history, religion, and society. A landmark study by one of the most distinguished anthropologists of Indonesia, it centers around the stories and paintings of Ida Bagus Madé Togog (1913-1989), an artist and ritual specialist who played a significant role in the history of Balinese ethnography. In the 1930s, Togog was central to Mead and Bateson's pioneering studies of "Balinese character" and came under the influence of expatriate artists Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet to emerge as a major representative of the Batuan style of painting. Togog's art and anecdotal stories of his most memorable life experiences are here interwoven with Geertz's illuminating commentary to construct an innovative framework for understanding Balinese culture.

Togog shares stories of his early life, relating dilemmas from his childhood and youth. Growing up in the wake of Dutch colonization, he came into contact with new languages, customs, and economic opportunities that presented him with puzzling and poignant experiences. He tells of his association with Spies and Bonnet and later Mead and Bateson and his role in the creation of a genre of painting for which Bali is now famous. This is a view of Bali from the inside—a vivid, highly personal look at a world where spirits, ancestors, and sorcerers have the power to intervene in one's life. According to Togog, who narrowly escaped death numerous times, his was indeed a "charmed life."

As an experiment in ethnographic research and writing and a contribution to our knowledge of Balinese art and tradition, Tales from a Charmed Life will be of great interest to historians, art historians, anthropologists, and anyone with a serious interest in Balinese studies.

The author, Janos Bali, is the outstanding Hungarian baroque flute and recorder player. The collection contains only contemporary ornaments selected from the repertoire of the period between 1550 and 1760. In the score the original melody of each work or movement and several different ornamented versions of the same melody can be found one below the other, thus the various possible modes of ornamentation can be compared. The introduction provides a basic historical survey of the subject and offers useful practical advice to musicians using the collection. At the end of the volume, Bali includes, almost in their entirety, the tables of ornamentation compiled by Confort and Quantz.

            Book Description

This original and innovative book challenges many of our long-held assumptions about traditional Balinese religion. Drawing on data from visual art, mythology, esoteric texts, and public rituals, Michele Stephen identifies a core of important mystical themes at the heart of Balinese religion and demonstrates the striking parallels between these and Indian Tantric thought. She argues that Balinese cosmology can be better understood in terms of transformations, ambivalence, and dynamic cycles of desire and destruction rather than the fixed hierarchies, harmonies, and balance that have dominated previous accounts. Far from being primarily a matter of customary forms and public ritual, the author shows that Balinese religion also encompasses important streams of mystical thought, including the inner spiritual discipline of various yogic teachings.

Desire, Divine and Demonic begins with an introduction to the problems of defining mysticism in Bali, a discussion of prevailing scholarly views concerning the nature of Balinese religion, and a brief description of the link between art and religion in Balinese culture. What follows is an intriguing analysis of two series of paintings by contemporary Balinese artists I Ketut Budiana and I Gusti Nyoman Mirdiana, who specialize in mystical and mythological scenes. These paintings, in Stephen's convincing interpretations, illustrate important mystical themes--themes that also appear in oral and textual versions of Balinese myths and philosophical texts and bear remarkable similarity to the basic premises of Indian Tantric thought. In the book's final chapter, Stephen examines several well-known Balinese rituals to show how they can be reinterpreted as expressions of the central and classic themes of Shivaitic Tantric philosophy.

Desire, Divine and Demonic provides an important and timely reassessment of the nature of Balinese religion as it has survived in the modern era. It will generate fresh debate and research as Balinese religious thought and practice continue to be reproduced and re-created in the twenty-first century.
