Book Description

Bennett-Alexander and Hartman’s, Employment Law for Business, 4/e, addresses law and employment decisions from a managerial perspective. It is intended to instruct students on how to manage effectively and efficiently with full comprehension of the legal ramifications of their decisions. Students are shown how to think and analyze employment law facts using concrete examples of management-related legal dilemmas without clear-cut solutions. The methods of arriving at resolutions are emphasized, so that when the facts of the workplace problem are not quite the same, the student can still reach a good decision based on the legal considerations required by law, which remain relevant.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars ok, not great.......2007-08-05

I liked this law book because it has shorter versons of cases for quick lookup. What I hate about this book is that it doesn't list laws like ADA, Title VII, etc. in their entirety. It speaks about parts of them, but doesn't list them for you to read yourself.

1 out of 5 stars One-sided approach to regulation.......2004-08-04

I would have preferred a text that merely reported employers' compliance obligations in an objective manner, rather than portraying employers as the enemy. I generally found the text to be highly politicized and, to some extent, anti-management. This book does little to bridge the gap between the business community and academia.

4 out of 5 stars Employment Law for business.......2004-01-07

As an attorney, manager, and teacher of human resources professionals, I recommend this book. I found that thie information was thoroughly researched. I also appreciated that the legal information was presented in a business context so that managers who are not lawyers could understand the information and readily appy it to real life workplace problems.

2 out of 5 stars Useful Book........2003-06-22

This is an interesting, informative and useful book. I used it for school and it will be one book that I keep. Great case studies.

2 out of 5 stars Employment Law.......2003-02-17

I think the book is so liberal and it advocate large government. Freedom is not through following the forced laws like affirmative action, ADA, etc. but having a choice especially in employment. Employer should have the say on what they want and who they want to work and not work. The book pretty much tells you that this is the law and its good for you ,so follow or else.
That is socialistic.
We are giving more power to the government to tie us down with more laws and regulation. Their responsibility is to protect the citizens and not to do business. That's for the private sector.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Review of Subject Matter. Clear and Concise........2007-08-22

This book provides a very good overview of the federal law of employment discrimination. While not incredibly detailed about every statute, this book gives you the bread and butter of what you need to know about each of the statues you would study.

Good for a quick review of the subject to go along with your casebook.

4 out of 5 stars For the Discriminating Only.......2006-08-23

I'm a training specialist by trade, and I have taught Sexual Harassment Prevention and Equal Employment Opportunity classes for many years. This book allowed me to appear as a subject matter expert because I was able to offer more depth in specific cases and topics. If you're discriminating about your sources, I know you will buy this.

4 out of 5 stars Useful.......2006-04-26

I read this book in order to survive a law class. I also used it when I had an interview with the Office of Civil Rights. This book may feel cursory but it covers a large array of material. For those who are constantly suspicious about facing discrimination in the workplace, it may be especially enlightening. Though I gave my copy to a friend not involved in the law, I do worry about it being misused by laypeople. For example, you could be blatantly discriminated against, and this book may point to cases that reflect your own situation. However, if you missed a statute of limitations or your employer doesn't have a sizeable number of workers, etc., your case may be a loser. Still, filing with local anti-discrimination office is supposed to be free and of no prejudice to the worker. Since this summarizes the everyday law, it is not a cute, easy read. But it is useful.

        Book Description

The Fourth Edition offers a comprehensive treatment of the entire subject of personnel law that reflects the author's personal experience as both a practicing lawyer and personnel director. Written in simple language that bridges the gap between law and human relations management, the new edition explores the legal considerations that occur when an employer-employee relationship is established, and focuses on permissible activities in handling personnel problems, when to seek legal counsel, and how to stay out of court. Offers new case law where the legal principles have been changed by the courts. Covers all the new statutes. Continues to find an economical way for the Epersonnel function to live with its law partner, <70> whose principles are laid down by legislation and interpreted by the courts. An excellent resource for those in the personnel/ human resources field.

        Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars do NOT use this as a textbook.......2002-11-06

The very first sentence of the Prologue of this book contains a grammatical error (it should be "principles," not "principals") and I am sorry to say that things don't get much better. I purchased this book as a text for an Employment Law class and it was terrible; I quit using it halfway through the course and recommended the instructor find another text. The author seems to think he's the most credible person in the world but, as someone who is also a human resources practitioner, I can assert from experience that many of his opinions (several of which are presented as "facts") are wrong. He clearly doesn't even understand what the field of human resources IS, and in many cases I found his tone very offensive.

In addition to using more current information, Sovereign would be well-advised to better consider his audience and to research the field of human resources in general. I would suggest he start with professional organizations such as SHRM or ASTD; the advice and information on their web sites is far superior to anything in this text.

1 out of 5 stars Hodgepodge of mismatched topics.......2000-06-30

Sovereign seems to skip around often in a half-hearted effort at being comprehensive. The cases are not very recent, despite the publication date, and the book has a definite lack of flow. It is almost as if the author threw together several mismatched segments and forgot to edit it for comprehension and cohesiveness.

3 out of 5 stars Adequate on the law; suffers from poor editing.......1998-02-27

I have to use this book as the text for a class I teach in Employment Law (i.e., non-collective-bargaining law) to students matriculating to a Master of Science Degree in Human Resources. The text adequately surveys the law, but suffers from terrible proofing and editing; it also needs an update, because the 1994 edition obviously was not written any later than early 1993, based on the omission of certain important U.S. Supreme Court cases from 1994 and since. The book also suffers from an extremely strong pro-management tone; a more balanced approach would serve the untutored reader better. There are better books, such as the ABA Guide, which I commend to potential readers of this book.

Each phase of employment litigation offers opportunities for success--and many risks of failure. This handbook is designed to help litigators identify and make the best use of the opportunities that become available to them and avoid the pitfalls that await.

Solutions to real-life problems and issues
This is a practice-oriented guide, not a treatise. Employment Litigation Handbook provides experienced solutions to the procedural and important substantive problems you will encounter in assessing, settling, litigating, and appealing an employment case--no matter your level of experience, whether you represent management or employee, or whether the case at hand involves harassment, discrimination, or wrongful discharge. It includes dozens of checklists, sample pleadings, interrogatories, letters, and other useful forms. For both management and plaintiffs lawyers The editors actively sought and have incorporated the varying views and suggestions of lawyers who represent both management and plaintiffs, and they have provided legal authority supporting those contrasting approaches. The fourteen chapters were written by experienced, successful employment lawyers and were extensively peer-reviewed for accuracy and balance.

Yet another waste of text. The same old vitim plight of the poor poor female in our modern society. I need a tissue! this book would have gotten a better review if I had read it in the 1960's.

          Get over it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Women in Criminal Justice.......2000-07-24

Van Wormer and Bartollas' book provides a very broad discussion of all facets of women in the criminal justice system, such as rape, spouse abuse, women in prison, women in law enforcement, and women in the legal profession. Because of its broad range of information, it provides a strong book for courses in criminal justice programs involving women. It also provides a strong reader for lay persons who are just interested in knowing the issues involving women and the criminal justice system. In the College of Social Work at Ohio State University, I teach a course entitled social work practice in corrections and would adopt this book as a second book for my course to provide students with broad perspective of women issues in criminal justice.

5 out of 5 stars a valuable and rare resource.......2000-06-17

Although laid out like a textbook(numerous summary statements and bullet points) and encompassing an enormous amount of literature, the writing is crisp and interesting, liberally sprinkled with quotes, original interviews, vignettes and illustrative sidebars. The chapters fall into the basic categories of women as imprisoned perpetrators, women as victims of crimes, and the place of women in the law enforcement system. The book is a joint effort from a social work professor and a sociology/criminal justice professor. THis resulted in a fruitful interplay between the objective and subjective voice in the presentation of this material. The subject is explicitly approached from an empowerment perspective, which focuses on giving people the information they need to navigate the issues most effectively for helping themselves and others. The assumption is that issues of gender, social class and racial oppression enter into all aspects of the subject. This is a valuable and rare resource in this area of human concern. Book Description

The typical workplace is a hotbed of human relationships--of friendships, conflicts, feuds, alliances, partnerships, coexistence and cooperation. Here, problems are solved, progress is made, and rifts are mended because they need to be - because the work has to get done. And it has to get done among increasingly diverse groups of co-workers. At a time when communal ties in American society are increasingly frayed and segregation persists, the workplace is more than ever the site where Americans from different ethnic, religious, and racial backgrounds meet and forge serviceable and sometimes lasting bonds. What do these highly structured workplace relationships mean for a society still divided by gender and race? Structure and rules are, in fact, central to the answer. Workplace interactions are constrained by economic power and necessity, and often by legal regulation. They exist far from the civic ideal of free and equal citizens voluntarily associating for shared ends. Yet it is the very involuntariness of these interactions that helps to make the often-troubled project of racial integration comparatively successful at work. People can be forced to get along-not without friction, but often with surprising success. This highly original exploration of the paradoxical nature--and the paramount importance--of workplace bonds concludes with concrete suggestions for how law can further realize the democratic possibilities of working together. In linking workplace integration and connectedness beyond work, Estlund suggests a novel and promising strategy for addressing the most profound challenges facing American society.

          5 out of 5 stars REVIEW.......2004-02-26

From the Publisher: "Working Together" shines a bright line on group conflict and cooperation at a fundamental but understudied juncture in American social life: the workplace. Her study combines deep research and careful nuance with bristling insight and an accessible style that should attract a broad audience. For a host of reasons, American social analysts tend to minimize the importance of what happens at the job. "Working Together" is an important and impressive corrective."--Randall Kennedy

5 out of 5 stars Praise for WORKING TOGETHER.......2003-09-26

"WORKING TOGETHER is an original and important book. With eloquent prose, Cynthia Estlund convincingly develops the argument, based on a careful integration of empirical studies and social and political theory, that working together enhances inter-group relations in the long run. This book has enormous relevance for students concerned about the future of civil society, and will be widely discussed and cited for many years."
