Customer Reviews:
Biased, but a good primer on business ethics.......2006-02-24
This book is a good primer on business ethics, and it would be even better if the writer / editors hadn't shown their bias with their selections of included material.
Business ethics theories evolve, just like any other social phenomenon; however, just because a theory is new doesn't make it right. Especially in an ethics book! The authors are clearly biased against big business, against small government, and against "shareholder management" theory.
Does this make them right or wrong? No. The only "wrong" committed is the bias itself.
As you read this book, just keep your critical thinking skills sharp and your eyes open.
A Critical Compendium.......2002-07-20
This book is a critical reader, and it's probably the most highly used text in business ethics today. Those who reviewed this book negatively sound like people looking for a fun, non-academic overview of the field. If so, this book isn't it. These are articles published in top academic journals, edited for readability, by scholars who are addressing the fundamental issues in a wide range of topics. It's meant to expose the span of the field and still give students (not light readers) exposure to contemporary literature that touches on the most salient points. It's meant to be a starting point to deeper research in any given topic. As such, the book is a complete success. B & B do a great job (here as in other ethics compendiums) of providing a framework that makes it easy for a professor to expose her students to the field in one swoop. They do a fine editorial job, stripping the articles of padding, and they work hard to keep the offerings up to date (passing on older articles that are superceded by fresh insights that touch on contemporary challenges and technologies; look for something relating to the corporate scandals of this last year in the next edition). If you are a student looking for an overview on business ethics, this book is the correct starting point. If you are someone looking for light reading about corporate corruption, with illustrations and full-color photos, stick to People magazine.
A Good Anthology.......2001-06-23
I really enjoyed this anthology, especially the section on sexual harassment. Some of the subjects were hard going, but, it was a good introduction to business ethics.
In Defense of Beauchamp and Bowie.......2001-06-17
I teach business ethics at the college level, and have found Ethical Theory and Business to be very helpful. Basically, B and B attempt to do three things, or so it seems to me. First, they offer an introductory essay, covering some of the main distinctions in both meta-ethics (e. g. whether morality is objective or subjective) and normative ethics. This essay is the weakest part of the book, I think, because they seem to offer caracatures of most relativist leaning views (e. g. egoism), and do not adequately criticize Kantian moral philosophy. But even so, the essay does explain many useful distinctions in philosophical ethical thought. Second, B and B offer both classic readings in Business Ethics (e. g. Milton Friedman), as well as really up to date readings, by many of the leaders in the field (e. g. R. Edward Freeman). This is quite a good selection of readings, although they have omitted a few classic essays (like Galbraith's 'The Dependence Effect'), and a few subjects which might have been useful, such as the question of whether one can attribute moral agency to corporations at all. Even so, B and B include more than any course in Business Ethics could cover. Third, B and B provide a Web site with excersizes and instructor aids. Depending on how much one uses the Web, this may be helpful too. So generally speaking, although no anthology is perfect, Beauchamp and Bowie have put together an admirable collection. There is a seventh edition coming out soon. Perhaps that one will be as good as this one.
This Book is Whack!!!.......2001-05-11
Ethical Theory and Business by Beauchamp & Bowie is the worst academic book I have ever been required to read. I agree with the reader from Minnesota that this book is very dry and boring and if I could give this book zero stars I would. All of the chapters in the book do not flow together very well since this book is very unorganized and is nothing more than a collection of narrative articles. The book does not have an index or any illustrations in it and the companion website to the book [stinks]. I do not think I learned anything about business ethics from reading this book nor did I find the information in it helpful for me in my life. After I finished reading this book, I felt like throwing it away, but instead I sold mine back to the bookstore. So if you want to learn about business ethics and are not required to purchase this book for a class, do not purchase this book.

The Consumer's Guide to Effective Environmental Choices: Practical Advice from the Union of Concerned Scientists
ASIN: 1893910474 |
Book Description
Over 85% of Americans today express concern about health and the environment, but only a small fraction say they know where to begin. Whether you are concerned about climate change, personal health, or just want to live more lightly on the planet, this book is for you. It helps you get past the worry and take positive action to improve both your health and the health of our environment.
Based on a lifetime of research and practice, this practical guide for living green offers advice and solutions you can easily put into practice, like:
*The 10 foods you should always eat organic to avoid pesticides, herbicides, hormones and antibiotics. *Affordable and practical ways to offset your "carbon footprint" and neutralize your personal impact on global warming. *The most chemically-intensive personal care, household cleaning and lawn care products, and their effective natural alternatives. *How soft plastic water bottles hurt your health, your pocket book and our environment, with a simple and refreshing alternative. *How a simple carbon filter can dramatically improve your everyday health and potentially add years to your life. *The truth about hybrids and flex fuels. *Why an organic mattress is the most important health investment you can make. Foreword by Jordan Rubin, New York Times best-selling author of The Maker's Diet.
Customer Reviews:
Living Green 06.......2007-10-04
I really liked this book. It is a little hard-core, but motivational. The book overviews an entire green/health lifestyle: from diet to household energy. The author follows his own advice in part because he has multiple-chemical-sensitivity. He is also very eco-conscious, but there is definitely a strong health slant (he was the CEO of GNC and is for Garden of Life).
I cannot yet (I make too little money) buy a new car or retrofit my home to be more green, but I like his advice and plan to read it again when I do have money. The diet and personal products sections have good buying guides and I can put these sections into action in my life now. If you are looking for a consumer guide, I recommend you pair this book with "The Virtuous Consumer" by Garrett- a slightly more mainstream book.
I also bought and recommend "Clean House, Clean Planet" by Logan.
Very disappointing.......2007-09-30
There's really nothing very practical in this book, but instead focuses on things that seem to be relatively "low impact." It does not illustrate the most significant ways people can live a greener life (e.g. by not driving and not eating red meat) and reduce their negative impacts on our environment. The advice seemed superfluous and too anecdotal, and thus unconvincing.
Green.......2007-09-13
Good effort to delineate an economical way to think but the authors seem to not practice what they preach.
i loved this book..........2007-05-15
This book was well written, no jibber jabber just really to the point with lots of interesting info! I am looking forward to applying it's points and suggestions to my life and seeing the results!!
Go Green!!
Wow! I am blown away by this little green book. .......2007-04-26
If you only have time to pick up one book on green living, do yourself a big favor and buy this one. This slim, green laminated "bible" of a book will quickly educate and guide you on positive steps you can make right now to improve your health, your home and the world around you. It's thoroughly researched, well organized and engagingly written for folks like you and me; frankly I couldn't put it down. For once, I don't feel lost in the jungle of environmental choices. Greg Horn's book left me feeling empowered, clear on the changes I wish to make, and well-armed with the resources to do so. Would make a great gift for everyone on your list, too. Highly recommend this one--don't pass it up.

Customer Reviews:
Suze Orman's Protection Portfolio.......2006-08-31
I found this product extremely disappointing and not worth my time or money for several reasons: 1) the audio is condescending and difficult to avoid, why not just let me read it if that is my preference? 2) you can't print out the tutorial pages so you have to go back and forth to refer to them again, which can sometimes be several screens back, 3) you cannot enlarge the screen image to fit your computer screen or move it to the side if you want to open another program to get information to fill out the Orman requirements. Being able to enlarge the screen would be a great benefit for me as I have poor eyesight-- which is the very reason I bought a 20" screen, 4) Suze Orman is on every screen. She's attractive but is spending too much time promoting herself over developing a good product, 5) you can not change the typeface from Courier (Times Roman would be nice) or change the page margins. The final document looks like it was produced in the 1920s. 6) when you print out the draft documents there are inexplicable holes in some of the paragraphs. They are aware of this problem (once they finally answered my email inquiry) but don't seem to think it is important to fix before releasing the product for sale. Why should I have to get to the end of the program before finding this out? 7) you can't continue to the next screen without hitting the "continue" button. Give me a break and let me press my return button instead of having to move my cursor around. The whole program seems to be a protoype to test on us unsuspecting customers.
It messed up my printer.......2006-07-26
The CD looks okay, and then when you go print the documents it completely messes up my printer, to the point that I wasted an entire new package of paper and still cannot print anything on my printer.
Get the Suze Orman Will & Trust kit instead.......2005-03-10
Dear Amazon Customers: Are you surprised that I myself have given my own product a one star rating? Dont be for you know I am always honest with you. Please be aware that at the time when this product was created (which was years ago now) that at that time it was great! It was the best the technology could offer at a price that everyone could afford. However since that time I have totally been able to 1000% improve it with the latest version which is under the title Suze Orman's Will and Trust Kit. I do not want you to waste your hard earned money on this version when for the same amount of money you can have the latest and the greatest. The new Will and Trust Kit answers all the criticisms in the reviews on this page and even more that needed to be addressed. This old version is browser based so you cannot save your information for security reasons, the new version on the WILL and TRUST KIT is on a CD ROM that can be downloaded onto your computer. This allows you to then give the disc to a friend or family member for them to download etc. So one kit can serve the entire family. The Will and Trust Kit not only has the CD ROM but it also has ten electronic books on the CD itself along with automatic updates of all the forms, so when changes happen you can for free get what you need to know. The new kit allows you to simply answer questions and it picks the forms you most likely should have and then fills in the information from your answers directly into those forms. The old version does not do any of this. The Will and Trust kit has the trust lawyer Janet Dobrovolny ( my trust lawyer who created this kit) verbally taking you through your forms via the audio format and you also can print out the directions and or read and listen to them on screen. There are over 50 forms on the new version, over 90 weblinks and 15 calculators. Please note: You DO NEED internet access to make the most of the updating process of the new Will and Trust Kit. I could go on and on, but the bottom line is I want you to get the most for your money and this old version of the Protection Portfolio, the page you are currently on, will not give you that but Suze Ormans Will and Trust Kit will. I would love if Amazon took this old version off all together and we have asked and asked them to do so, but that is not how they work so what to do, but now you know what I think. Thank you for taking time to read this. Suze Orman
Good book, Poor Software.......2004-11-23
While the information in the book was informative, I'm surprised at the poor quality of the software used to generate forms. The software does not allow you to electronically save (And modify) the forms - you must print them immediately. Information does not transfer from one form to the next, you must retype information endlessly. Was most surprised that someone of her prominence wouldn't seek out a better software vendor.
Great Value/40 Forms/PC & Macintosh Compatible.......2004-03-01
"Please take the necessary steps today to protect your tomorrows." ~Suze Orman
I was amazed at how much you can get these days for twenty dollars. This packet has one book filled with form samples and information, A CD-ROM with forms for various documents and two instructional CDs.
Suze Orman has created this protection portfolio so you can easily create a Will, a Revocable Living Trust or even a Cohabitation Agreement. She explains the most important documents that everyone must have and then explains how compiling these documents ahead of time will help prevent worry and stress if the unexpected occurs.
You will find forms and websites for the following information:
Credit Report/Card Documents
Important Personal Documents
Home Ownership Documents
Personal Insurance Documents
Social Security Documents
Retirement Plan Documents
Investment Documents
Estate Planning Documents
The book is divided up into 11 main chapters. The list of how long to keep various documents was very interesting. Suze shows you how to get rid of financial clutter all while organizing your documents. Then, she shows you how to get credit reports or file complaints with a Credit Bureau. Chapter three delves into Personal Documents. Here you can collect documents listed in the Important Personal Documents list. Chapter four deals with Home Ownership.
Then on to documents about automobiles, recreational vehicles and boats. Chapter six delves into the area of Personal Insurance Policies and Records. Chapter seven explains social security statements and cards. Chapter eight explains Retirement. Investments, Estate Planning Documents and Tax records complete this comprehensive book.
In the back of the book you will find a unique "Protection Portfolio Filing System." You can order additional items for about the same price as this portfolio.
Other features include:
The Protection Portfolio Emergency Contact Cards
The Protection Portfolio Help Site
Suze Orman is a contributing editor to O: The Oprah Magazine and has been called "a force in the world of personal finance." She is definitely organized and finally the world of Wills, Advanced Directive and Durable Power of Attorney all start to make sense. Life is complicated, but Suze Orman makes this all seem so easy to understand.

Paper or plastic? Cloth or disposable? Regular or organic? Every day, environmentally conscious consumers are faced with the overwhelming catch-22 of a capitalist society--reconciling the harm we do by consuming, while still providing ourselves and our families with the goods and services we need. It's enough to make a city dweller crazy. Fret no more! The Union of Concerned Scientists has put together a well-researched and eminently practical guide to the decisions that matter. The authors hope that the book will help you set priorities, stop worrying about insignificant things, and understand the real environmental impacts of household decisions. For instance, you may be surprised to learn that buying and eating meat and poultry is much more harmful to the environment than the packaging the meat is wrapped in, even if it's Styrofoam. This guide takes on both sides of the consumer-impact argument, goring sacred cows of the environmentalist movement (like the strident emphasis on recycling) and the industrialist perspective (like the relentless message to buy more, more, more). If you're confused and overwhelmed by all the environmental decision-making in the modern world, you'll find new inspiration in this book. --Therese Littleton
Book Description
From one of the most prestigious nonprofit organizations devoted to environmental issues comes a clear, practical, and rational overview of the relationship between consumers and the environment.
Paper or plastic? Bus or car? Old house or new? Cloth diapers or disposables? Some choices have a huge impact on the environment; others are of negligible importance. To those of us who care about our quality of life and what is happening to the earth, this is a vastly important issue. In these pages, the Union of Concerned Scientists help inform consumers about everyday decisions that significantly affect the environment. For example, a few major decisions--such as the choice of a house or vehicle--have such a disproportionately large affect on the environment that minor environmental infractions shrink by comparison.
This book identifies the 4 Most Significant Consumer-Related Environmental Problems, the 7 Most Damaging Spending Categories, 11 Priority Actions, and 7 Rules for Responsible Consumption. Learn what you can do to have a truly significant impact on our world from the people who are at the forefront of scientific research.
Customer Reviews:
EVERYONE should read this book.......2007-09-30
Impeccably researched, well-referenced, and very convincing. This book will convince the shrewdest skeptics. It focuses on high-impact habits, and doesn't harp on the little tiny details that don't make a big difference. A fantastic book; true to its title!
Some good ideas.......2007-08-23
This was purchased as a gift for someone who is very interested in the health of our environment. It is a good book for those who share that interest.
Short and practical .......2007-07-04
This short and practical guide tells us how we can make a difference in protecting our environment...and also tells us what behaviors do not.
It sheds a lot of insight on the topic, while also dispelling lots of myths concerning different options and choices available to today's consumer (paper or plastic?, cloth or disposable?, etc., etc.)
worth reading, but getting dated.......2007-04-24
This book is now a bit dated. The largest impact we make on the environment according to the authors is driving a car. What, in 2007, is the best environmental car choice, a hybrid (what happens when all these batteries die?) or a high mileage diesel that the European car makers are building?
Likewise, in home heating, now that there are tax credits for energy efficient home improvements, what is the most cost effective thing we can do that makes a difference?
I would like to read something a little more up to date on these topics, but this book was a good readable into to making good choices.
restating the obvious.......2007-04-10
Travel less, install more energy efficient appliances and lighting, get better gas mileage in you car, install better insulation in your house, eat less meat. That's most of the book, it does break things down to help you decide what choices make the most difference, but there is no groundbreaking information in here that will change your life. If you want to make an impact on your environmental footprint, you need to make sacrifices in your life, that's what it comes down to. The one thing I did learn was that heating a cup of water in the microwave uses less energy (less wasted heat) that on the stove. But much of the info in this book is interesting statistically, but not really that useful to the average consumer.

Book Description
The forces that shape America's most powerful consumer agency
Because of the importance of what it regulates, the FDA comes under tremendous political, industry, and consumer pressure. But the pressure goes far beyond the ordinary lobbying of Washington trade groups. Its mandate-one quarter of the national economy-brings the FDA into the middle of some of the most important and contentious issues of modern society. From "designer" babies and abortion to the price of prescription drugs and the role of government itself, Inside the FDA takes readers on an intriguing journey into the world of today's most powerful consumer agency.
In a time when companies continue to accuse the FDA of nitpicking and needlessly delaying needed new drugs, and consumers are convinced that the agency bends to industry pressure by rushing unsafe drugs to market, Inside the FDA digs deep to reveal the truth. Through scores of interviews and real-world stories, Hawthorne also shows how and why the agency makes some of its most controversial decisions as well as how its recent reaction to certain issues-including the revolutionary cancer drug Erbitux, stem cell research, and bioengineering of food-may jeopardize its ability to keep up with future scientific developments.
Inside the FDA takes a closer look at the practices, people, and politics of this crucial watchdog in light of the competing pressures and trends of modern society, revealing what the FDA is supposed to do, what it actually does-and fails to do-who it influences, and how it could better fulfill its mandate. The decisions that the FDA makes are literally life and death. Inside the FDA provides a sophisticated account of how this vitally important agency struggles to balance bureaucracy and politics with its overriding mission to promote the country's health.

"The forces that shape America's most powerful consumer agency
Because of the importance of what it regulates, the FDA comes under tremendous political, industry, and consumer pressure. Highly Informative (and Neutral) Look at the FDA.......2007-08-08
Democrats want more Big Pharma regulation and consumer protection. Republicans want to protect Big Pharma's profits. The tobacco and diet supplement industries want to be left the hell alone. And consumers want miracle drugs for free. Somehow, some way, the FDA navigates the minefields of the food and drug industries every day and tries to base its decisions on science. While some authors take cracks at the FDA because of a political agenda, Fran Hawthorne remains neutral and thus provides the most level-headed look at the FDA that's on the shelves. While the reading is pretty dense, this is a book that every concerned citizen needs to read.
If you want to know about an administration that controls a third of our economy, this is the first step........2007-08-03
If you know nothing of the FDA, than this will blow your mind. By the time you are through half the book you will be considered an expert on the subject by all your friends.
Not one of the more exciting reads, but extremely informative. Not just about what you might think it is about, but much much more. This book will give a clearer view of where we all live.
Interesting look at an important regulatory body.......2006-12-20
For those who have ever wondered how the FDA makes decisions and how those decisions effect companies this is a great starting point. Hawthorne takes an objective stance towards the FDA and shows their faults along with the positives. She tracks several instances of FDA oversight and gives their results. I think the part that tracks the companies progress through the FDA's is the most instructive. One of my fields of study was health and pharmaceutical economics and this was a great way to start learning about the FDA.
Fascinating, Informative Look at Food & Drug Administration.......2005-05-28
"Inside the FDA" is a thoughtful, balanced, and well-researched look inside the controversial and troubled Food and Drug Administration. Author Fran Hawthorne is an experienced business journalist and her skills are evident here.
Digging into the FDA's complex and conflicting world, the book provides an informative picture of FDA's bureaucratic, political, and scientific drivers. Ms. Hawthorne does an excellent job of laying out what the FDA is suppose to do, what is really does, and where and why it fails.
It makes for a great read.
Amazing book, although it misses one key insight.......2005-05-07
Far better and more balanced than any book to date on the subject. The book does an amazing job explaining the external forces tugging in all directions at the FDA without those shrill calls for "reform" made by so-called public interests like CSPI or misguided lawmakers like Hinchey out of NY.
The only thing missing from the analysis are the internal forces. FDA attitudes are very much related to the belief system of the staff and the culture fostered by the institution.
If you've ever been on the receiving end of an FDA action, you know the prevailing culture inside the FDA views the entire industry as the police view criminals. The FDA often seems to doubt every iota of data, question every motive and act as if the administrative procedures which insure fairness are somehow boundaries on a power they believe should be limitless. Many parts of the FDA are an "end-justifies-the-means" culture. Staff who don't toe the line and approach industry with all out animosity and suspicion are often suspect themselves of being deficient in intellect and/or integrity.
The book does a bang up job analyzing external forces. If Ms. Hawthorne actually could have gotten inside the front lines at FDA, she would have had all the facts she needed for a superb analysis.

Great book for saving money and helping environment.......2006-01-29
This is a great book for anyone that has an interest in the environment. The practical tips also help individuals save money while making a positive impact.
Save Money, Make an Impact, Share it With Others.......2006-01-20
This is an amazing book. I didn't think I had a lot to learn about saving energy. The Authors do a great job describing just about all one needs to know in order to save money...and the planet and its resources while preventing climate change.
It was a very well-researched book. On some of the calculations, they state assumptions. Some are left on faith. This is OK. There were a few subtle details that may have been a bit overstated, however their estimates on how much can be saved are not exaggerations. If anything, they are conservative, especially given the cost of gas, heating and electricity...If only water were more expensive...alas!
This book inspired a Weatherstripping party at my apartment complex and has helped me have even more footholds into discussions about conservation and how much difference it can make.
Thanks to the Authors. Wonderful!!!
Exceptionally practical and a very interesting read.......2004-11-19
First, this book is very easy to read. Each tip is only a few pages long, so it is easy to read in small pieces or out-of-order. The information it presents is very practical, listing a wide array of energy-saving tips ranging from the more obvious (changing light bulbs and using programmable thermostats) to a good selection of not-so-obvious (getting off of junk mail lists, making green investments, identifying appliances which burn a lot of electricity even when they are turned off, cleaning your refrigerator coils, using carbon offsets, and many more). Overall, I was very impressed with the breadth of ideas represented here, which encompassed much more than I expected or could have ever thought of on my own.
Each tip provides interesting background as well as hard numbers so you can gauge the impact and determine if the tip makes sense for you.
Having read this book and implemented a number of the key tips, I have learned a lot and also cut my monthly electric bill roughly in half. I would strongly recommend this for anybody who is interested in saving money or sustainable living. And for around $10, given all the money you'll save, you can afford to give copies to your family and friends.
Where has this book BEEN all my life?.......2004-10-18
This is a MUST READ for anyone wanting to understand their personal contribution to Global Warming and what they can do about it!
This book tackles a daunting, huge problem in a VERY encouraging way. It provides tools anyone can use to reduce their personal contribution to this problem and that of their community and their nation. Let's hope many schools add this book to their curriculum!

Customer Reviews:
PRIVACY CRISIS is an exceptional privacy reference tool. A must read for 2007........2007-04-12
PRIVACY CRISIS was written by an author who has proved that through diligence, effort and a working knowledge of the system, one can have privacy in their life.
Grant Hall has opened new doors for those of us who previously believed that the road to financial privacy must be traveled by transferring assets to offshore 'havens' in an attempt to control our assets. In fact, Hall uses business resources that cater to the privacy seeker combined with knowledge of the financial system and negotiating skills to keep bank and brokerage funds hidden from those who may want to find them. Hall recommends using a company that rents safe deposit boxes without identification, tax i.d. or Social Security numbers-not even a name for those who want total secrecy. There's examples of cashing checks that leave no trail to the payee. Hold assets and property in total secrecy. These methods were eye openers for me.
I liken this book to an information enemy to the powers that want to control freedom loving Americans. Those who choose to become invisible to identity thieves, stalkers, private eyes can do it by practicing Hall's principles in PRIVACY CRISIS.
This is the best book on the subject I have read and I highly recommend it to those who desire personal privacy.
PRIVACY CRISIS provides information on banking secrecy in the U.S.A........2007-03-22
I have completed Privacy Crisis and this book answered many questions about privacy and the challenges we face today.
Grant Hall has covered all of the important money privacy issues and it is possible to make your assets and money disappear through the application of the principles outlined in the book. And this can be done in the U.S.A. What a break from the other authors who guide readers toward offshore banks and advise giving control to others.
I appreciate the attention to detail. Obviously, Hall has walked where other privacy writers have never gone. I would highly recommend this book to those who fear their bank accounts will be stolen or seized by government agencies or others. Thorough, complete and worth the money many times over, Privacy Crisis will become a big deal in the arena of Privacy Reference books.
This book may be the greatest investment a person could make to escape the threats of stalkers, identity thieves or others who wish you harm.
Buy this book.
Worth a Hundred Times the Price.......2007-03-02
Personal privacy is under siege these days. Mine was first invaded when cyber-crooks drained my checking account in a single day. If you don't take steps to protect yours, it too will go up in smoke. For you, maybe it's when an obsessed former spouse or fan starts stalking you. Or the government--claiming "national security"--begins wiretapping your phone. Maybe it's when your employer snoops on all your emails, a gumshoe rifles through your credit files, or you have to supply your most personal information just to open a checking account or buy a home.
You don't have to give up your God-given privacy. Believe me, this book will tell you everything you'll ever need to know about how to protect it--whether in just one area, or an entirely anonymous lifestyle. This author knows his stuff. He's practiced everything he writes about. So his book is far in advance of other privacy books that just recycle armchair theories or even worse, suggest you do things that are outright illegal.
Protect your identity. Protect the privacy of your home and business transactions--your computer, phone, mail, travel, bank account, stored items, credit files, hard assets, and investments. One invasion of your privacy will cost you ten or a hundred times the price of this one-of-a-kind book.
I wish I'd known about it before they emptied my bank account.
A timely guide to preventing stalking and identity theft.......2007-01-26
During this era of skyrocketing identity theft crimes, violence and death to innocent victims by stalkers, and government's tracking and monitoring of citizens' business, money and communication, Americans are seeking privacy for personal security and survival. Grant Hall writes on how to live an anonymous lifestyle in his new book, Privacy Crisis: Identity Theft Prevention Plan and Guide to Anonymous Living. And he should know. He used a non-traditional 'defense' to avoid a civil court case by disappearing for four years. A number of privacy tactics outlined in Privacy Crisis belong to Hall. I have never seen these in print-and I began reading privacy books prior to the publication of W.G. Hill's first PT book. Privacy Crisis may be the best book of its kind ever written.
According to Hall, privacy living is the answer to preventing identity theft. One can escape from a stalker or disappear-for any reason by using the information in Privacy Crisis. Alternate identification, renting and owning a home in secrecy, driving and working under the radar and establishing a clandestine communication and computer system are covered in detail. This book is thorough and complete and cites case histories and challenges the author of 'How to be Invisible' on the use of nominees.
Hall provides insight on anonymous banking, cashing checks privately, alternate name debit cards and provides a resource for obtaining a safe deposit box requiring no name or Social Security number. There's information on how to keep investments, property and businesses a secret. All of this can be accomplished in the U.S.A. of all places-a welcome change from the many books offering unrealistic, inconvenient, expensive, offshore remedies for domestic privacy problems.
A Must-read for Privacy-conscious Americans!.......2007-01-14
It goes without saying that personal privacy is a rare commodity in America today. Identity theft has become the country's fastest growing crime. Con artists relentlessly target us while greedy lawyers and vengeful ex-spouses threaten to drain our bank accounts and assets. Our personal computers have become open doors into the most discreet corners of our lives. And that doesn't begin to address threats to our privacy from the government, eavesdropping employers, nosey snoops with hidden agendas, eavesdropping employers, and increasingly intrusive marketing-crazed companies.
Privacy Crisis is easily one of the best books on privacy ever written. Through his eye-opening inside perspective, as someone who evaded private investigators and attorneys for four years by living "below the radar," Grant Hall has brought us an authoritative how-to guide for the average American who wants to protect his or her privacy on an practical level. Far superior to the many theory-laden books on privacy, Privacy Crisis is a revealing step-by-step manual written by someone who has walked the walk. This book is required reading for anyone concerned about their personal and financial privacy in an ever-threatening society.

Author Frank W. Abagnale knows something about fraud--he once committed it for a living. "Through my various hustles, I passed something like $2.5 million worth of checks, a blizzard of paper that I scattered in earnest throughout all fifty states and twenty-six countries, all before I was legally allowed to drink," he writes. "I was proficient enough at cashing fraudulent checks that I earned the distinction of becoming one of the most hunted criminals by the FBI." Abagnale was ultimately caught, and he served prison sentences in France, Sweden, and the United States. In the 25 years since his release, Abagnale (who also wrote Catch Me If You Can) has become a leading consultant on fraud prevention.
"I'm still a con artist. I'm just putting down a positive con these days, as opposed to the negative con I used in the past," he explains. "I've applied the same relentless attention to working on stopping fraud that I once applied to perpetrating fraud." His expertise comes in handy: businesses lose an estimated $400 billion each year to fraud. The stories Abagnale tells in The Art of the Steal provide fascinating glimpses of a criminal underworld. He describes "shoulder surfers" who rip off bank customers at ATMs by videotaping their fingers as they enter PIN numbers, retrieving receipts from wastebaskets, and then creating fake credit cards--all rather inexpensively. Whole sections of the book almost read like a how-to manual for aspiring thieves, though Abagnale has other motives. Throughout, he offers sensible advice on how to foil the con artists. Much of this is common sense (cut up credit cards when they expire), but some of his suggestions aren't so obvious. He warns readers not to write checks to the "IRS," for instance: "Envelopes to the IRS are common targets because of where they're going." Instead, checks should be made out to the "Internal Revenue Service," because criminals can turn the "I" of "IRS" into an "M," and turn a tax payment into a gift for "MRS." Smith. The chapter on the emerging problem of identity theft--with its tips on how to keep Social Security numbers private--is especially helpful. In all, The Art of the Steal is captivating and useful. --John Miller
Book Description
The world--famous former con artist and bestselling author of
Catch Me if You Can now reveals the mind--boggling tricks of the scam trade--with advice that has made him one of America's most sought--after fraud--prevention experts.
"I had as much knowledge as any man alive concerning the mechanics of forgery, check swindling, counterfeiting, and other similar crimes. Ever since I'd been released from prison, I'd often felt that if I directed this knowledge into the right channels, I could help people a great deal. Every time I went to the store and wrote a check, I would see two or three mistakes made on the part of the clerk or cashier, mistakes that a flimflam artist would take advantage of. . . . In a certain sense, I'm still a con artist. I'm just putting down a positive con these days, as opposed to the negative con I used in the past. I've merely redirected the talents I've always possessed. I've applied the same relentless attention to working on stopping fraud that I once applied to perpetuating fraud."
In
Catch Me if You Can, Frank W. Abagnale recounted his youthful career as a master imposter and forger. In
The Art of the Steal, Abagnale tells the remarkable story of how he parlayed his knowledge of cons and scams into a successful career as a consultant on preventing financial foul play--while showing you how to identify and outsmart perpetrators of fraud.
Technology may have made it easier to track down criminals, but cyberspace has spawned a skyrocketing number of ways to commit crime--much of it untraceable. Businesses are estimated to lose an unprecedented $400 billion a year from fraud of one sort or another. If we were able to do away with fraud for just two years, we'd erase the national debt and pay Social Security for the next one hundred years. However, Abagnale has discovered that punishment for committing fraud, much less recovery of stolen funds, seldom happens: Once you're a victim, you won't get your money back. Prevention is the best form of protection.
Drawn from his twenty-five years of experience as an ingenious con artist (whose check scams alone mounted to more than $2 million in stolen funds), Abagnale's
The Art of the Steal provides eye-opening stories of true scams, with tips on how they can be prevented. Abagnale takes you deep inside the world and mind of the con artist, showing you just how he pulled off his scams and what you can do to avoid becoming the next victim. You'll hear the stories of notorious swindles, like the mustard squirter trick and the "rock in the box" ploy, and meet the criminals like the famous Vickers Gang who perpetrated them. You'll find out why crooks wash checks and iron credit cards and why a thief brings glue with him to the ATM. And finally, you'll learn how to recognize a bogus check or a counterfeit bill, and why you shouldn't write your grocery list on a deposit slip.
A revealing look inside the predatory criminal mind from a former master of the con,
The Art of the Steal is the ultimate defense against even the craftiest crook.
From the Hardcover edition.

Common Sense that's Not so Common.......2006-12-02
Abagnale offers some insight into the mind, motives, and methods of many criminals. As I read through the The Art of the Steal, I found that many of Mr. Abagnale's suggestions were useful, some were common sense, and a few were just fluff to fill up the pages of a book. I liked the format because the chapters are broken down into logical (and small) segments that provide excellent reading material for the bus, train, or in a waiting room. I found the details of the scams described in the book absolutely fascinating. The real question that you need to ask yourself after reading a book like this is : Do I feel that I am better prepared to prevent fraud for having read this book? My answer to this question is, Yes. I am buying an extra copy of this book for my neice who is a bank teller, and I would recommend it to those in management, those running a private business, or anyone who supervises employees that handle money (or cash equivalents).
You Better Read This Book - Stealing is too EASY!.......2006-11-22
Well written book by an ex-con who was very successful as a thief. The simplicity and ease of the acts clearly demonstrate the skill of the author. I am much more aware of how to protect myself against theft after reading this very effective book.
Enlightening.......2006-09-23
It's amazing the number of ways you can get ripped off. If you learn one thing from this book, it's that you've got to watch your a**!
Candid. Unnerving. Insightful. Compelling. .......2006-05-26
Frank Abagnale is the subject of the movie "Catch Me If You Can" and a proven master of deception and the "con". Since his reform many years ago, he has spent decades working with the FBI and the private sector to improve their defenses against the modern criminal.
"The Art of the Steal" is a practical, no-nonsense book that lays out the schemes, subtrefuge, and methods employed by criminals to steal from businesses and individuals. Abagnale details how the cons work and traces them from relatively simple cases of cashing bad checks and street vendor fraud to cyber-thievery and identity theft. Of course, he also provides ideas and solutions to protect yourself from being "had" or victimized.
Abagnale has a lot of credibility in this field and his suggestions are right on the money, so to speak. He is practical, down-to-earth, and insightful. This book provides a wealth of information on how to protect yourself and your family from a ruthless, intelligent, resourceful criminal element.
The facts about "Catch Me If You Can".......2006-02-21
For those of you comparing the literary qualities of this book with "Catch Me If You Can", note that Abagnale did not write that book. He only told his story to the real writer. You can read Abagnale's comments about this at his website at http://www.abagnale.com/comments.htm.
Having said that, I will say that Abagnale has plentiful good advice about taking precautionary steps to protect yourself from fraud. If you don't feel sufficiently informed on that subject, this book is an eye-opening source of information about the threats and the steps you can take to protect yourself.
Abagnale's grasp of complex computer security topics isn't very strong. But that is a fast-changing subject that might be better researched online than in books, which are necessarily a bit behind the times.

Review of "Scam-Proof Your life.......2007-09-11
I found the book Scam-Proof Your Life to be very thorough in covering all catagories noted in the Table of Contents.I especially liked the "go-to" sources for filing complaints. I found, however, that the inserted information in each catagory interrupted the flow of the commentary and disturbed my "train of thought". Overall, there is a wealth of useful information in this book.

Scam-Proof Your Life is a really good book with lots of information that will teach you ways to protect yourself against the scams and frauds we face everyday. It seems like we are constantly faced with people trying to cheat us out of our money. This book is both fun to read, and very informative, and will make you aware of some of the scams used by these criminals to steal your money!

Nervously peeping out my window!.......2007-04-25
This book should be required reading for the entire country. A crisp and invigorating read, 'Scam Proof,' is packed with information on topics ranging from Telephone Service (Chap #4) to Identity Theft (Chap #10); chapters 3,7, and 8 are especially informative. The length to which the credit card companies (Chap #3) will go to fleece us out of our money is mind blowing; furthermore, the similiarities that exist between the unfair but legal practices of some of America's most powerful institutions and the ambitious professional conman out to take you is unsettling. Get ready to feel paranoid, because this book is an eye opener.
