Book Description
Encompassing classic criminalistics and beyond, Forensic Science: An Introduction to Scientific and Investigative Techniques is the first introductory text to present forensic science in its broadest sense. Packed with over 350 full-color illustrations, the book offers a cutting-edge presentation of criminalistics and related laboratory subjects and full-chapter, state-of-the-art accounts of other traditional forensic specialties such as forensic pathology and those disciplines that have recently become part of the forensic arena. Contributions from highly respected experts both in practice and academia cover various applications, such as DNA analysis, trace evidence, forensic engineering, computer crime, and forensic psychology. It offers a clear, comprehensive overview that reveals the breadth and richness of the forensic sciences to students and practitioners alike.
Customer Reviews:
Great Introduction to Forensic Science.......2007-02-08
As a graduate student in Forensic Anthropology I found this book to include nearly all of the information I needed in my undergraduate classes. If I had only had this book before I could have saved a lot of money with all of the other books I have purchased. Not only does it provide information on all the important topics in forensic science there are also several illustrations and photographs to help the visual learners. I highly recommend this book.
Excellent core text for any forensic science course.......2005-03-05
Excellent book ideal for any forensic science student! Includes detailed information on all aspects of forensic science incl. recent advances in DNA and computer forensics..could not find any topics which were left out. Superbly illustrated with full colour photos. Chapters written by experts in their particular field. Definitely recommended, not only to students but to all forensic practitioners.
not impressed.......2004-08-18
This is a superb book...for junior high or high school students. Yes, it is easy to read, but I found the highlighted words in the text (to indicate they are in the glossary) to be a nuisance. The authors over-simplify everything and attempt to encompass too many areas of the broad field, so it will only be of use to readers who have never seen CSI or know absolutely nothing about forensic science. Saferstein's introductory book on forensic science would be a better choice for your money.
Excellent Guide.......2004-06-07
This book is excellent for anyone interested in Forensic Science. Just as the synopsis says this brings to light the reality of forensics as a science rather than psychology. It is in depth but clear and easy to understand - it even has a huge glossary of terms at the rear with the words highlighted in the chapters for easy acess to their meanings. It will be an invaluable help to people with an interest in forensic science. As this book says, it's an introduction on "scientific and investigative techniques" but don't be fooled, the detail is immense and the book is superbly laid out. Clear diagrams, photos and graphs are well placed to help the reader further understand what they are taking in. The text it's self is easy to follow and friendly to read and the concepts are well explained. What I especially like about this book are the questions at the end of each section (nothing formidable) and the case studies and examples that further help to emphasize the points being put across.

Customer Reviews:
Made-Up, Fictitious Nonsense. Save Your Money.......2007-08-14
This author of the section on Physician Assistants either made up her description of the profession out of whole cloth, or knew better but liked what she concocted more than she liked the truth.
To begin with, PA programs don't last from "a few months" to 2 years. There is no place the author would have found that. They all last 2 years...or longer.
Secondly, the author's statement that some programs may have academic prerequistes is just as demonstrably untrue. All PA programs have considerable prerequisites, and these have become more demanding over the years. Many programs require the applicant to hold a Bachelor's degree.
Unfortunately, the gross inaccuracies of this section cast a very dark shadow over the rest of this edited collection. When a book has "legal" in its title and has so serious a misrepresentation, a reader would be wise to look elsewhere for facts upon which to base important decisions.
If you like your non-fiction books to come from the wild imagination of the author...go ahead, get this book. Try not to lose too much sleep wondering which statements in the book are true and which are like the statements mentioned above.
PAs defined by a Nurse?!.......2007-08-08
Until the definitions of Physician Assistants are accurate and corrected in printed and spoken word, this text is untrue and thus, misleading and misrepresentive.
The trend is that PAs are now on Masters level-- either at the onset of education or at the completion of the PA program. In this first decade of the 21st century, there will be a 100% increase in those PA numbers at the end of previous years. As much as some in both factions are loath to admit-- we are on the same team and should and indeed, do work together.
Inaccurate Description of Other Professions..........2007-08-07
If the description of the PA profession is any indication of the caliber of this book, I wouldn't trust anything in it. The author is clearly misinformed as to what PAs are (they are physician assistants, no 's), what their capabilities are, what their training entails and what they are legally allowed to do. The author's definition of a PA is disingenuous and if this serves as the legal basis upon which nurses are supposed to be making decisions, it is completely inappropriate and ultimately hazardous to patient care.
Physician Assistant misinformation.......2007-08-07
I was very disappointed to read Stacey Follin's (ed) description of my profession, Physician Assistants. I was perplexed how she could be so wrong. Either she is ignorant of our profession or she has a political agenda, either of which would cause one to doubt anything that they read in the book. To continue to spread this type of mis-information only contributes to animosity that some nurses feel toward PAs. Nurses and Physician Assistants are on the same team, with the same goal of providing quality, compassionate health care to our patients at reasonable cost.
To correct her statements, PAs typically have BS degrees plus at least two years of patient care experience before entering PA school. PA-medical school has a standard of 24 continuous months of very intensive training. Most PA schools lead to the Masters degree. There has never been, in the history of our profession, a PA program that "last a few months." We are not trained to "assist physicians." We are trained to practice medicine. National Certification was never "available" for PAs but is mandatory, requiring 100 hours of CME every two years and a very difficult national board exam every six.
I was an instructor in both a PA program and a Nurse Practitioner program. In my experience the curriculum of the PA program, in general, was much more challenging than that of the NP, so the efforts to dismiss the PA training as inferior is in poor taste.

Book Description
Considered the definitive resource and text on forensic psychiatry and psychology since the publication of the first edition, Psychological Evaluations for the Courts, Second Edition, continues to be the most comprehensive discussion of legal, research, and clinical issues for both mental health and legal professionals. Fully revised and updated, the volume covers a broad range of topics in forensic mental health, including insanity, child abuse, sentencing, personal injury claims, and civil commitment. Less traditional subjects such as federal antidiscrimination and entitlement laws, competency to testify, workers' compensation, and a new section on the clinical evaluation of witness credibility have also been added. Throughout, the authors summarize and analyze legal issues, offer suggestions for evaluation procedures, and review appropriate research on both clinical opinions and the legal process.
New to the Second Edition
Completely updated to reflect current research and practice, the volume contains four entirely new chapters and has been revised throughout to include analyses of new case law and clinical techniques; important research on competency and dangerousness from the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Mental Health and Law; and new ethical rules developed by the American Psychological Assocation and the American Psychiatric Association. Also new to this edition are exercises and case studies for students in each chapter (see below).
Customer Reviews:
Very good comprehensive text.......2006-07-08
This book was mandatory for a forensic case law course taught by a seasoned forensic expert. It is thorough, accurate, and provides everything one needs to know before conducting forensic evaluations, as well as a significant amount of information most professionals ought to know but often don't. I recommend it as a tremendous resource for any clincian, especially those who have even a mild interest in forensic or correctional psychology.
5+*s.......2006-04-08
Not a light Sunday afternoon read, this book requires time to think and digest topics. It provides outstanding survey and advanced analysis of research, U.S. laws, and policies across the major foci. While a bit dated, it probably is the best source for gaining an understanding of forensic mental health. An outstanding reference. I feel somewhat odd in reviewing this book, almost like, I'd imagine someone feels when reviewing the Bible. Well worth the price. I wish it would have an annual or biannual update.
Journeyman's Opinion.......2001-12-20
Excellent reference, but a little outdated as of this writing (Dec. 2001). Opinions and recommendations of the authors do not in all respects reflect the majority, or even the respectible minority, of forensic psychologists and psychiatrists. Nonetheless, an excellent reference to have in your library to get the overall gist of an issue or a topic at the interface of psychology and the law. Detailed information pertaining to actual practices will need to be located elsewhere.
Best of Breed.......2001-06-09
I have used this book extensively both as teacher and practitioner for years and it remains the best available text for mental health professionals conducting evaluations for the legal system. It is also an outstanding reference for attorneys litigating mental health issues. Its greatest strength is in the criminal law area, but it is excellent in other areas of the law/mental health interface as well. Psychiatrists should not be deterred by the term "psychological" in the title; it is equally applicable to both disciplines.
Expertly done survey of the area with practical applications.......1999-10-09
If you buy only one book to gain an introduction, or update on the area of forensic psychology, this must be it. The authors have gathered legal precedent, research, illustration, and opinion, while retaining readability. It is long - especially with double column pages - but well worth it. An added feature is that the authors, through the publisher, maintain a web site for periodic updates to the book and relevent case law.

*Details managed care, malpractice, liability, and other modern policy areas such as fraud and abuse, alternative dispute resolution, and advance directives
Bryan Liang's primary goal for HEALTH LAW & POLICY: A SURVIVAL GUIDE TO MEDICOLOGAL ISSUES FOR PRACTITIONERS is to provide physicians, attorneys, and all others interested in health care with the relevant intellectual tools necessary to be able to understand and survive in the rapidly changing world of health care. This goal is implemented through basic descriptions and a supplemented case approach where themes or rules are plainly stated, one or more case illustrations are given, and relevant commentary is provided, integrating the rule and case. To be effective, medical and legal practitioners and patient advocates in this evolving health delivery system must expand their knowledge base to encompass legal and business concerns. This book seeks to provide the foundation to allow this expansion to occur.
Customer Reviews:
a book that EVERY doc and health lawyer should own!.......1999-12-31
Liang's book is the first comprehensive AND comprehensible book on the health care system out there! As a physician who went to medical school decades ago, i never realized how much would change in the practice environment. No one has been able to give a thorough review of all the topics that we need to know now; not my specialty society, certainly not the AMA, and not my state med society. But this book does; it has everything from a great overview of the law, the standard stuff (e.g., med mal, informed consent) AND gives clear and complete explanations of the huge and legalese laden areas of fraud and abuse, antitrust, etc. I found the material on physician contracting really helpful in understanding what I should look for in my contracts. And the stuff on death and dying (e.g., advanced directives) was very helpful for my patients (I copied it for them). I heard of this book from the general counsel's office at our hospital and she uses it a lot too. I tell all the med students and residents who rotate with me about this book. And the web page addresses are really great!
Bible of law and medicine.......1999-11-11
This is the best book out there for both medical and legal professionals. It is easy to read and and a great resource for all law and medical issues.

Book Description
The second edition of this popular international handbook highlights the developing relationship between psychology and the law. Consisting of all-new material and drawing on the work of practitioners and academics from the UK, Europe, North America and elsewhere, this volume looks not only at the more traditional elements of psychology and the law - the provision of psychological assessments about individuals to the courts - but also many of the recent developments, such as the interaction between psychologists and other professionals, decision-making by judges and juries, and the shaping of social policy and political debate.
Contemporary and authoritative in its scope, the second edition of The Handbook of Psychology in Legal Contexts will again prove to be a valuable resource for scholars and students, as well as being a vital tool for all professionals working in the field.
- Well known editors and an international list of authors, most of whom are leaders in their field
- Focus on psychological concepts and knowledge that will enlighten best practice and research
- The focus on process and issues ensures that the book is not limited in interest by specific legal codes or legislation, it is international
- More than an updating of the old chapters, really a rethinking of the field and what is now important and emerging

MALPRACTICE SCENARIOS.......2007-07-18
I have to acknowledge that I didn't read all the scenarios. I am a happily retired physician. Why bring back the nightmares ? But I would love to learn the opinions of the attorneys-physicians authors of this publication, in relation to a scheme nobody thinks about and....it probably happens in American Operating Rooms
.
My book is called "terrO.R." Fiction ?
Book Description
Unlike other forensic science laboratory manuals, Forensic Science Laboratory Experiment Manual and Workbook provides many experiments suitable for non-science majors and attainable for departments with small budgets. Most of the exercises can be conducted with materials that are either readily available in chemistry and biology departments or can be purchased without significant expenditure. The experiments cover all the typical trace evidence tests including body fluid, soil, glass, fiber, ink, and hair. The book also includes experiments for impression evidence, such as fingerprints, shoes, and firearms, as well as the use of photography and basic microscopy. An ideal laboratory companion to the Forensic Science: Scientific and Investigative Techniques textbook, this concise manual also serves as an excellent stand-alone workbook.
