Book Description

Family businesses epitomize the best of the American Dream: you work hard, you're your own boss, you leave a lasting legacy to your children -- or do you? Statistics show that only 30% of family businesses survive to the second generation, and a paltry 10% survive to the third generation. Family businesses are in trouble, and their survival is crucial to us all. Their success ensures our country's success -- and their failure can drastically affect our economic health.

In Keep the Family Baggage Out of the Family Business, family business expert Quentin Fleming has identified the Seven Deadly Sins that are invariably responsible for a family business's demise. Keep the Family Baggage Out of the Family Business presents practical and accessible advice geared toward the average family business owner or employee and is an invaluable tool for helping family businesses not only survive but thrive.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Down-to-earth.......2007-03-26

I wish I'd had this book years ago! My husband's family business was recently in bankruptcy and was bought out by another company. They committed practically all of these "deadly sins". The information is practical, appliable, and very real life advice. Heed his warnings!

5 out of 5 stars Anyone with a Family Business must read this!!!.......2007-01-27

I spent ten successful years working for my fathers very successful business. He told me I would take over the business "someday", he had a heart attack and retired but could not give up control. This is VERY common as I learned from this book. I spent the last 3-4 years waiting for him to deal with the future of his business. This book and some others I read finally convinced me to move on with my life. It was a difficult decision, but ultimately freed me to begin my life on my terms. If any owners of a family business are reading this, please read this book and talk with your heirs. Eventually you will die and someone will have to keep your business alive, if they have the desire and interest it may as well be one of your children... This was the best of the family business books I read (I made it through 6). Good luck!!!

5 out of 5 stars Must read for familys who work together.......2006-01-25

This book, in a very neutral way, captures where families can go wrong, in the family business. Must read for all generations, both in and out of the business. Even if things are going great right now, read this book!

4 out of 5 stars More Truth Than Many of Us Want to Admit.......2004-05-16

As a family business counselor and consumate reader, I continually look for new materials that can help clients--family members and non-family managers--better understand the family business enterprises in which they are employed...or enmeshed.

The title of this book turned me off. I know of no family business that can avoid the "socalled 7 deadly sins." Family baggage is part of family business.

Nonetheless, I recommend the book. My usual use of the book is education of non-family managers who work for family business. My favorite reading references for professional managers are by John L. Ward: Keeping the Family Business Healthy, and his revised, expanded update, Strategic Planning for the Family Business.

Family members may be willing to read the book, although I have limited experience with that. I would refer them to books like Working With The Ones You Love by Dennis Jaffe.

4 out of 5 stars okay, although I understand that it's the best of it's type.......2003-05-13

Depending upon the health of your family (and family business) most of this book does not really apply. The author also openly states that. However, he does say that it only takes one of the "7 sins" to take down a family business and it does allow for some forewarning of things that should be avoided.

He does cover a lot of ground, including immigrant businesses, a good section on succession of the business, and touches on both small and large family businesses.

I found quite a bit of it to also be his sales pitch, implying that every family business should hire, in the foreground or background, a consultant, a lawyer, an accountant, and possibly a therapist =D

Overall, it's an okay book covering topics which hopefully most people are aware of and warning you about things you may not be. If you are facing problems, this book may help you either diagnose it yourself or he suggests things to look for in an outsider to help you diagnose it.

Good luck!

    Book Description

This book provides a comprehensive description of the manner in which the law regulates and reacts to heath care and personal decision making for the elderly. Readers of this book will often find answers to their questions. Other times, there may not be a specific answer, but the reader will better understand the legal doctrine at issue. This book will be valuable as a guide that will point the reader along the direction of further research. It will also help the reader make sense of what can be a complicated and confusing mixture of federal and state statutes and case law.

      Book Description

The popular referendum of 1974 which affirmed Italy’s recently-won divorce law is widely regarded as a turning point in modern Italian history, but the long story behind that struggle has remained largely unfamiliar. Using the debates over divorce as a lens, this book is a study of the quest to modernize Italy, Italians, and Italian marriage. Although the 1974 referendum settled Italy’s ‘divorce question,’ the issues at the heart of that question – particularly the relationship between individual rights, the state, and religion – remain central to modern politics.

      Book Description

Should a woman who refuses a "medically necessary" C-section be prosecuted for the murder of her stillborn child? Should a pregnant drug-addict be arrested for distributing narcotics to a minor? Why do people continue to frown upon public breastfeeding, when the law protects it as a mother's right? Is date rape a less serious harm than stranger rape? Does an employer who requires female, but not male, employees to wear makeup discriminate on the basis of sex? Should employers protect women from hazardous work conditions solely on the grounds that they may become pregnant? Through these ripped-from-the-headlines, contemporary examples, law professor and legal commentator Sherry Colb explores the current terrain of the battle between the sexes. In her intriguing and ever-so-timely book, she makes a compelling social, legal, and political case for taking a person's sex into account for some matters but not for all.

While unspoken biases persist in government agencies, in the courts, in business, and elsewhere, When Sex Counts takes a hard look at sex discrimination and examines how emerging law and public policy grapple with the differences between the sexes while simultaneously struggling to maintain a commitment to equal treatment under the law.

A lively, thoughtful and thought-provoking series of essays. Professor Colb considers a variety of up to the minute issues relating to women and the law, and brings logic, penetration, and practical sense to bear on each of them.

Now is your chance to blow the bank on legal fees without actually doing so. Don't even think about tying the knot, breaking up or starting all over again without reading this lively, invaluable book.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Promising theses but not much legal advice.......2007-08-07

I wish the author really shared his legal expertise with the reader rather than beating around the bushes. The book could and should be much more succinct and to the point, while still easy to read/listened. Instead we get a lot of common sense notions, and many repetitions of the obvious, and not enough actual legalistic information.

I've listened it in the digital format, and from more than 7 hours of audio, no more than 1 hour can be classified as legal advice. The rest is crowd-pleasing filling. Based on the subtitle $600 per hour legal advice, I defintely didn't got $4200 worth of legal advice.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for all- married or not.......2006-01-24

What were you thinking... we have all asked ourselves that question many times! This book really makes you ask yourself the tough questions that are useful before, during, or after a marriage (or any relationship for that matter). The expertise and insight that Barondess has in regards to marriage and divorce is unique, as well as entertaining! Just the tips on working with an attorney in general are invaluable! I believe everyone who has had, or is thinking of having, a committed relationship (not just getting married), should read this book!

4 out of 5 stars Very insightful on the impact of marriage and divorces.......2006-01-10

The author tends to engage in conjecture at times, but overall, his book is very insightful on the divorce process and it definitely makes one realize all the practical implications of a marriage. People often decide to marry when they are on such an emotional high that they do not realize how tough it is to merge lives and property together.

I would have liked to have seen more commentary by relationship experts such as Dr. Phil instead of celebrities, but I suppose the author is trying to show how even celebrities have the same marital issues as everyone else.

4 out of 5 stars What Were You Thinking?.......2005-10-30

I am only 1/8 through this book and I WISH I had read this when I was 18. I am 52 and have been married to two sociopaths. A lot of the book verbalizes things many of us KNOW but we IGNORE. I recommend reading this to anyONE contemplating marriage. It's a wake up call. Makes you THINK. Some of us need someone to SAY things clearly in black and white. That would be ME. Well here it is... I plan on writing another review after completing reading this book. Stay tuned...

5 out of 5 stars HILARIOUS... BUT TOO LATE FOR ME.......2005-10-19

My bride (we are still writing thank you notes for our wedding gifts) and I sat up until 2am the night we were given this book, laughing and reading parts of it aloud to each other. We both loved the part cautioning readers that whatever bugs you about your intended before the wedding will only get worse as the years pass... so true. The author, a tough divorce attorney, takes a pretty hard line: if you don't want to get divorced, then don't get ever get married. Well, we already did exactly what he advises against, but there was still plenty of valuable reading here. It gave this newlywed lots to think about... particularly enjoyed the interview with Gene Simmons, of all people, about relationships. Funny cartoons. Very enjoyable book.

        Book Description

Elizabeth Pleck's Domestic Tyranny chronicles the rise and demise of legal, political, and medical campaigns against domestic violence from colonial times to the present. Based on in-depth research into court records, newspaper accounts, and autobiographies, this book argues that the single most consistent barrier to reform against domestic violence has been the Family Ideal--that is, ideas about family privacy, conjugal and parental rights, and family stability. This edition features a new introduction surveying the multinational and cultural themes now present in recent historical writing about family violence.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Parents of a Child with Learning Disabilitie.......1999-12-08

Barbara Coyne Cutler is an amazing woman who fought for her son's right to a free, appropriate education for 10 yrs. before being heard. Not only did she fight for her son, she has fought for many other children herself and through her book. I read this book before an IEP meeting and it made all the difference in the world. This is an excellent, easily understood book.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for parents of "special" children.......1998-03-24

I read this book as my husband and I battled our school district for services for our autistic son. I recommend it to all parents I meet now. It not only tells you what the schools can and can't do, it also tells you how to get and hold their attention and gives samples of letters, etc. For example, any meetings we now hold with school representatives also have a 3rd party witness - a hint gleaned from this book. If you are a parent buying this book to get services for your child, it will help. I wish you luck!!

            Book Description

As an important contribution to debates on property theory and the role of law in creating, disputing, defining and refining property rights, this volume provides new theoretical material on property systems, as well as new empirically grounded case studies of the dynamics of property transformations. The property claimants discussed in these papers represent a diverse range of actors, including post-socialist states and their citizens, those receiving restitution for past property losses in Africa, Southeast Asia and in eastern Europe, collectives, corporate, and individual actors. The volume thus provides a comprehensive anthropological analysis not only of property structures and ideologies, but also of property (and its politics) in action. Book Description

Heart-wrenching, high-profile court cases such as the Baby M case have called attention to the troubling consequences of new reproductive technology; the law has yet to catch up with the ways that people create families today. Although these times may appear chaotic and confusing, Mary Shanley shows us that we don't have to be afraid. Her timely work begins by demonstrating that the traditional model of the "natural," patriarchal family is outdated, and that the newer contractual model based on equality between adults can lead to questionable results for the child.

Shanley offers a new vision of family law that's based on existing caring relationships of adults for children. It ensures each child's right to be cared for, and takes into account the emotional realities of family life. She applies this practical, humane model to the most complex and controversial issues of our time, including adoption, biological fathers' legal rights, surrogate motherhood, lesbian families, and the rights of sperm and egg donors and recipients.

"In this impressive study of family law's uneasiness with custody rights, Shanley explores how dominant notions of family (in which the primary partners are married, heterosexual and of the same race) have contributed to legal rulings on adoption and surrogacy....Shanley's discussion of transracial adoptions and the controversial role of race in shaping custody rights is evenhanded and riveting, as is her critique of surrogacy-for-pay and the sale of genetic material. Readers may be surprised that the U.S. is the only Western country that doesn't restrict human ova sales, and that France doesn't pay sperm donors. This critically sophisticated yet readily accessible discussion of adoption, reproductive technology and parental responsibility represents a much-needed addition to the growing number of books on new forms of family in the 21st century." —Publishers Weekly

"Making Babies, Making Families takes on all the hard questions . . . and with unflinching clear sight, clearly defined principles, and moral compassion creates a compelling basis for answers." —Mona Harrington, author of Care and Equality

"[This] distinctive and valuable contribution ensures that [we] protect the interests of children and other vulnerable people while sustaining the bonds of intimacy." —Martha Minow, author of Between Vengeance and Forgiveness
