Save Your Money.......2004-04-24
I'm not sure what the other reviewers found so compelling. I found little here other than pages and pages of lists. Some examples: 6pp. of LAPD police radio codes, 3pp. of FBI case classifications, 16pp. of org charts for the LA County Sherrif's Dept. My favorite, however, is the full page devoted to a listing of "Weapons Used by Criminals" which begins "Acid, Air gun, Ax, Bayonet, Bazooka, Billy Club..." Well, you get the idea. The portions of the book not devoted to lists tend to be laughably superficial (e.g., "Street gangs now battle over who sells the drugs and where." Really, thanks.) Granted, there are suggestions for further reading, but my advice would be to save yourself some money and do your readers a favor -- do your own research.
Spice up your writing.......2004-01-05
I don't usually write crime novels, but when I decided to try my hand at suspence I realized just how much help I needed. I searched through many reference books and found The Crime Writers Reference Guide by Martin Roth to be a savior for me. It gives great tips on investigating, cops, the courts, illegal drugs, the prison system and crime. A handy book to have by your computer when you need to amp up a scene or two or just need to be factual. I found the investigation, crime and prison chapters to be especially helpful. Plus, at the end of each chapter is a "Where to go from here" that gives you extra resources to look up, so you don't have to stop with this book and you have the titles and authors of others to investigate. A great companion to this book is one I found by accident titled "Crime Scene" by Larry Ragle. I wrote a review on that one too, so go there and check that out.
Individual chapters cover what a writer most needs to know.......2003-03-10
The Crime Writer's Reference Guide: 1001 Tips For Writing The Perfect Murder by Martin Roth is a detailed resource especially intended for aspiring authors of mysteries, suspense thrillers, action/adventure crime novels, true crime stories, and police procedurals novels. Individual chapters cover what a writer most needs to know in order to avoid common errors and misconceptions when writing about crime, criminals, police, courts, and prisons. A highly recommended basic primer, this edition of The Crime Writer's Reference Guide is enhanced with a new Foreword and updated information supplied by Rey Verdugo, a former police officer, a top criminal investigator, and a technical consultant for film and television projects.
What you need to know to write a crime drama.......2003-02-04
The premise of this book appeals to every screenwriter that is ready to enter the world of crime and investigation, a book written for screenwriters regarding the world of crime. This book is the ultimate starting point for creating a believable world for thrillers, mysteries, and other related crime dramas.
Written by Martin Roth with adaptations from Sargeant Rey Verdugo, this book grabs hold of you at page 1 by offering the 10 most common mistakes writers will make regarding police work. So, Is "taking a suspect down to the precinct for questioning" an appropriate phrase to use in your screenplay?
Then, the Crime Writer Reference Book states the different types of crimes and possible motives for creating such crime. It allows you, the writer, to explore any possible scenario and making that scenario accurate.
A must have for writers -- essential guide.......2003-01-30
As a screenwriter, there's a slew of reference guides available...but I must say this one is really a must-have. Regardless if you are writing an article, novel, non-fiction, TV or film-- if it has any reference to crime in it at all - do yourself a favor and pick up this guide. Because I do not have "Criminal/police" info readily available, this guide allows me (and my characters) to sound more credible and authentic. Another item I'd like to mention is the layout -- very easy to refer to -- lists of crimes, motives, firearms, etc. Saves me time and enhances my stories! Great book -- Highly recommend.
Book Description
Written by Mark Umbreit, internationally known for his work in restorative justice, this indispensable resource offers an empirically grounded, state-of-the-art analysis of the application and impact of victim offender mediation, a movement that has spread throughout North America and abroad. The Handbook of Victim Offender Mediation provides practical guidance and resources for offering victim meditation in property crimes, in minor assaults, and, more recently, with crimes of severe violence, including with family members of murder victims who request to meet the offender.
Download Description
When it was first introduced, the restorative justice movement was met with widespread resistance and skepticism. Now, more than twenty-five years later, the movement has flourished and continues to make great strides in reforming the traditional justice system. Today, the restorative justice movement is endorsed by many former skeptics. There are 1,300 victim offender mediation programs thriving throughout North America and Europe, and this form of mediation is now endorsed by the American Bar Association.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding work by the expert.......2007-08-13
Dyson has used his vast experience to help law enforcement officers solve terrorist crimes, something they have become more involved with since 9/11. He walks a novice through investigative techniques with which they may not be familiar and helps an experienced officer through other more technical topics. This book should be a part of every police library and used as a text in teaching potential officers in criminal justice programs around the country. Thanks Mr. Dyson for your years of service and for this excellent book.
Nice book.......2005-09-15
Item shipped quickly. I thought I ordered the second edition, but it turned out to be the first. I don't know whose fault it was, probably mine I am so abscent minded.

Book Description
Learn to work effectively with sexual criminals!
How to Work with Sex Offenders is the first complete manual available on the subject for professionals who deal with this very difficult population. This user-friendly, comprehensive resource presents new data that will give you techniques for effectively interviewing sex offenders and outlines innovative treatment options in an understandable way, but that is just part of what makes this book unique. How to Work with Sex Offenders walks you through the criminal justice, human services, and mental health systems as applied to sex offenders from start to finish -- you'll learn what happens to the offender from the point when he/she is apprehended, through prosecution, adjudication, and treatment.
From the Preface, by Rudy Flora: "Sexual offending impacts both victim and offender. The clinical harm experienced by a victim is significant and recovery is long-termed. Offenders, too, are often trapped in the tragedy of their deviance. Sex offenders are extremely skillful at avoiding detection, and will use any 'system confusion'displayed by providers to their advantage. [With this book] the reader will be exposed, in a step-by-step format, to how the criminal justice, human service, and mental health systems function."
How to Work With Sex Offenders: A Handbook for Criminal Justice, Human Service, and Mental Health Professionals examines: how the current system works, from start to finish
the roles of child protective services workers, law enforcement officers, prosecutors, physicians/hospital staff, district attorneys, defense lawyers, judges, mental health professionals, foster families, probation officers, correctional officers, parole officers, and social services providers
individual, family, and group therapy models
basic universal concepts regarding identification of sex offenders
profiles of exhibitionists, frotteurs, voyeurs, pedophiles, rapists, sexual sadists and paraphiliacs
what to expect when called as an expert witness at a sex offender's trial
sexual assault as a clinical disorder
suggested treatment formats for sex offenders in an outpatient setting, inpatient psychiatric hospital, or correctional facility
the costs of incarceration as well as inpatient and outpatient costs
the difficulties of parole and probational supervision for sex offenders
presentencing reports and interviewing strategies
and much more
Many sex offenders were early victims themselves. Incarceration alone will not alleviate the problem; other methods to prevent repeat offences are needed. Those who encounter these offenders require certain skills in order to properly protect the public and the victim as well as helping the offenders themselves. How to Work with Sex Offenders is the resource you need to handle this extraordinarily difficult and vitally important task.
Customer Reviews:
great starter book for those wanting to research sex offenders .......2006-10-21
great for those in the mental health field, law enforcement and psychology fields.......a must for all parents but i also found the material outdated since the book was written in 2001
A Focus on Clinical and Bureaucratic Matters.......2004-05-30
If you're a bureaucrat working with sex offenders this book will appeal to you. It gives a broad overview of the legal and clinical issues with lots of lists and bullet points. If you're more interested in the inter-personal dynamics of working with sex offenders or understanding what really motivates and drives them in their specific behaviors, then this book is not for you.
I found the book curiously lacking and somewhat out of date, even though it was published in 2001. For example, there is no mention of online activities, like pornography and chat rooms, and how those are fueling the addictive cycles of the users and perhaps contributing to other behaviors that more directly affect people in physical ways. Indeed, there is only one small section at the end of the book on the subject of sex addiction. What about the victimizing of children in online porn? What about the use of chat rooms to lure adolescent girls and boys into face to face meetings? What about the increasing use of hidden digital cameras for voyeuristic activities? These, and others, are the new frontier in offending, so to speak.
The author is in private practice but his previous years as a probation officer illuminate his approach to the subject. Although he includes a six page section on women offenders, Flora's view of sex offenders is definitely a male view, and he seems to view them overwhelmingly as heterosexual males abusing women and children. Exhibitionists and voyeurs seem to be males, for example.
I found the author's omission of a discussion of cultural background and racial propensities in offending notable, especially given his Hispanic surname. Also, missing was any significant mention of sexual orientation issues.
Overall, I found this book disappointing. Perhaps my expectations were unrealistic, so I'll give it a somewhat neutral three stars rating.
Commendable Guide to Working With Sex Offenders.......2003-02-19
Being associated with the realm of the mental health field, I have been further enlightened on the treatment of sex offenders through the proficiency of the author of this book. It is an advantageous textbook on its subject and should be considered a significant preparation for every novice of this field. Its reading should also be considered an additional compensation to the accomplished practitioner.
Definitive work On Sex Offenders.......2003-01-28
This book is extremely comprehensive and well-written. It covers the broad range of topics related to the field of Sexual Offenders and does so in an informative, clear and user-friendly manner. The book is very practical in orientation and will be invaluable to practitioners struggling to keep abreast of developments in this field. This book also provides an excellent review of the research literature which should prove invaluable to academics, researchers and students interested in this area. Rudy Flora has put together a well-organized volume, which covers the field very comprehensively. This will undoubtedly be considered a definitive handbook in working with Sexual Offenders. As a practicing clinical psychologist, I would recommend it without reservation.
A Must Reference Book for all Mental Health Providers!.......2002-12-04
Flora utilizes his many years of expertise while drawing from the scholars in the field to compile an excellent resource on how to work with sex offenders. This book is a must for all professionals and students in the field of mental health.

An Excellent Reference for California Evidence Law.......2004-01-27
Ray Hill brings over three decades of field and classroom teaching experience to this comprehensive work covering everything the California criminal justice professional needs to know. Topics covered include types of evidence, witness privileges, hearsay, search and seizure and Miranda law, just to mention a few. This edition includes a legal update section with the latest case law.
California Criminal Evidence Guide By Raymond Hill.......1999-10-02
This is an excellent book! I recommend this book to all the people out there who want to know info on California codes, laws and regulations. It would be great for those who are intrested or currently pursuing a degree in Administration of Justice or those of you just thinking about a career in Law Enforcement. This textbook covers information from the Introduction of Evidence all the way to Search and Seizure and Miranda, VERY IMPORTANT factors of todays justice system. All in all I have to rate this book a 10. Without this book, I would be totally lost and I personally can't imagine myself or anyone going out as a peace officer without having the knowledge that this book offers. SO BUY IT NOW! You can't afford not to.
