Customer Reviews:
Great introductory book to think about the FUTURE of EUROPE!!!!!.......2006-02-23
Do you live, or are you planning to live in Europe? Then, this is a must read book.
I am very pleased that I had the chance to read this book. I have recently moved to U.K. and realized the huge impact that the EU had on each European country. You as a citizen of European Union need to understand how EU works and how it can affect your life. If you have not been following the EU development as I (I had been living outside Europe all my life), this book is a great tool to catch up. This book will guide you through the history, issues, and policies of EU which will help you understand the current situation. In the introduction and through out the book the author mentions that so many of the European people do not understand how the EU works... well, lets read this book and learn. This is an introductory book to EU and it is not difficult to read. I am a non native speaker of English but I did not have any problem understanding the content. This is a well researched book giving you up to date information with interesting data represented in figures.
Now that I have caught up with the up to date information about the EU, I am feeling very excited about the future of European Union and individual European countries (sometimes referred as "the states" of the United States of Europe). As I am studying future forecasting, this book not only helped me to understand the history and the current situations in Europe but also gave me hints and ideas about the future of Europe. With the knowledge I gained from this book, now I will understand the news better than I did before, and know what I need to look for in the development of the EU. What policies will be made to integrate the European market? Will it be "single market"? How will the EU's economic power change the balance of the world's economy? Is it going to be NO1 economic power? Cultural and political issues are more difficult to forecast... What will be identified as the culture of EU? What is the balance between the national and EU culture? Is the European Parliament (this is the only European institution that have direct influence from European voters) going to have more influence on EU policy making? Is EU heading towards federalism? The author asks "will it happen, should it happen, what form will it take, what impact will it have if it succeeds, and what impact will it have if it fails?"
I have learnt that it is important to have the right questions when you forecast about the future. This book has definitely provided me with the chance to think about questions that I should be asking for.
As I did, you will have some idea or wishes about the future of Europe by the end of the book. This is the third edition of the book, and I am sure there will be more editions to come.
Excellent Overall Review.......2005-10-24
I'm currently taking a course on the EU in which the professor gave us carte blanche to purchase our own books on the EU. I was delighted to find out that this book was written by a professor who understands what and how to communicate this information to students. Plus, since the writer is a British immigrant, he could incorporate the European perspective of the EU from first-hand experience as opposed to a vicarious one. This book was very good at providing background info (without harping too much on history) and bringing the reader up-to-speed with current events as well as personal thoughts on the EU's future. Kudos to the writer. Thank you very much. Your book was very helpful. Cheers!

Book Description
Since the 1985 publication of the second edition of The Law of Higher Education, new developments in the courts and in Congress have continued to place campuses under increased scrutiny. In this third edition of William A. Kaplin's indispensable guide to the laws that bear on the conduct of higher education, Kaplin and Lee provide a revised and up-to-date reference, research source, and practical guide for college administrators, legal counsel, and researchers.
This third edition--with fifty percent of the material entirely new--updates the latest major developments in all of the topics covered in the previous edition and offers detailed information on a range of emerging issues including sex discrimination, hate speech, academic freedom in religious institutions, athletic scholarships, animal research, environmental laws, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
Expensive but very thorough.......2007-03-08
This is an outstanding book on higher education law. Lots of case examples and descriptions. A little repetative at some points, but I suppose that is true about law in general. Not even as dry as one might think about a 2 volume law book set.
A Must-Have for University Administrators.......2004-12-30
Kaplin & Lee's "The Law of Higher Education (Third Edition)" was the required text for a graduate course, "Legal Aspects of Higher Education" and should be present on the bookshelf of any university administrator. The book's subtitle, "A Comprehensive Guide to Legal Implications of Administrative Decision Making," is wholly accurate in describing the scope and utility of this massive tome (over 1,000 pages from cover to cover).
The book is a valuable investment on a number of fronts, not the least of which is the paucity of comparable texts on this complex topic. "The Law of Higher Education" begins with an overview of postsecondary education law and continues with an interesting organization that considers the college and its various constituencies -- "The College and Trustees, Administrators, and Staff," "The College and the Faculty," "The College and the Students," "The College and the Community," "The College and the State Government," "The College and the Federal Government," "The College and the Educational Associations," and "The College and the Business/Industrial Community." Each chapter is further broken down into key arenas (for example, in the chapter on students, a few of the topics include admissions, financial aid, disciplinary rules and regulations, and athletics). Each topic includes a context and is connected to numerous examples from case law. Despite the high degree of legal terminology, the book is readable for the layperson. There are separate indices for subject, statute, and cases that make it easy to locate relevant information.
This book is an excellent treatment of the enormously complex field of high education law.

Book Description
Drawing together a distinguished cast of international contributors, this new edition offers a timely collection of essays that analyze key issues, institutions, laws, and policies for the protection of the global environment. In addition to crucial historical context on the development of global environmental organizations and treaties, chapter authors offer both engaging discussions of current and critical global environmental agreements and insight into national and international implementation of sustainable development principles. Returning contributors have thoroughly revised and updated their chapters, while six brand new chapters examine such important topics as regime theory, climate change, hazardous chemical controls, perspectives of the developing world, and the European Union's and United States' international environmental policies. A useful chronology of global environmental policy and a list of acronyms further aid students in critical reading, as well as review and study.

Bible for International Organization Entrance.......2007-08-25
This book is about International Organizations as we see from the title. It organize all kinds of actors - from international organizations to civil society or NGOs. I have never seen a book like this which is well-organized. For example, it have highlighted headings and sub-headings, easily understandable boxes (tables and figures) and finally, suggested further reading is also helpful part of this book and make it perfect!
Of course, it will not be easy for basic-level students of IO, however, it must have been helpful to them. No pains, no gains! Some students will think it should be like 'google' website - which must be easily searchable through just typing and clicking, but, if you read, this book suggest us with valuable commments in each introductory parts.
Studying only power politics will be concluded with biased knowledge. I highly recommend this book to read.
too much minutia and disorganized.......2007-08-24
It seems as though there are details on every single international organization there is - no matter how boring.
It seemed as though I had to search across many chapters for information that would have been better packaged together.
I really enjoy international politics but didn't really care for this text.

International Criminal Law
ASIN: 0198299982 |
Book Description
As the former President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and a world-leading academic, Professor Cassese brings unrivalled experience and expertise to the study of International Law. This is the ideal text for all students, providing a clear and concise background to the history of international law and exploring the latest developments in the field. The book is written to a good length - covering all topics in sufficient depth for contemporary courses and avoiding superfluous detail. Professor Cassese explores the dynamics of international law, and looks at sociological approaches to the subject as well as paying full attention to traditional and more legalistic approaches. In a thorough treatment of the subject, he shows when certain legal institutions have come into being in the world community, analysing their origins and the rationale behind them. He explores why they have been created, what function they were intended to fulfil, and assesses how they have actually performed. COMPANION WEBSITE: A key feature is the companion website, specially created to work alongside the text. Key documents, case material, principal treaties and agreements cited in the book, and links to useful websites containing further sources are all included to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive resource for students and lecturers.

Does not say in the beginning that it may take longer than 14 days and does not tell that there is no shipping on Saturdays. I still don't have my book and it's been over 21 days.
Clear and Comprehensive guide for Int Law Students.......2003-02-06
I found this book incredibly useful for research, and as one of the main sources of information for a law competition I participated in.
The information is presented in a clear manner, yet it encompases a large range of international law theory. On top of that it includes real life examples within the text, but in a format, that they can be skipped over if neccesary.
The book was a great guide to international law jurisprudence, pointing me in the right direction in every case.
This book is great either as an introduction to international law, or as a reference book.
I think its an all around must-have.
Excellent updated book.......2002-08-31
I consider this book as an excellent text for students of International Law and International Relations. The work provides clear legal reasoning and information, but also interesting and updated examples. This mixture makes the book extremely interesting, including the web infomation linked to the book.
Actually, I adopted this text as the basic reading for my University introductory course on Public International Law.

Book Description
The World Bank Administrative Tribunal is an institution which in the twelve years of its existence has acquired considerable importance and a reputation for consistency and impartiality in the exercise of its judicial function. Its case-law reveals much about the structure and working of not only the World Bank but other important international organisations. This second volume of the comprehensive digest of the WBAT's case-law which deals with cases decided between January 1988 and June 1991, like the first volume, will be of much use to the those working in and studying international organisations as well as those simply interested in the World Bank Administrative Tribunal. The author cites those parts of judgments which pertain to a particular issue so that the reader has first-hand access to the Court's actual decisions on that issue. The pronouncements are thus arranged so as to give a clear picture of the contribution each has made to the law governing the international civil service.

This book is an excellent source. Buy this book! There is no better synopsis of banking/financial law.

The WTO Agreement on Safeguards: A Commentary (Oxford Commentaries on International Law)
ASIN: 0199277079 |
Book Description
The book provides an analytical overview of the World Trade Organisation's Anti-Dumping Agreement, as interpreted by WTO Panels and the Appellate Body. The Anti-Dumping Agreement is often perceived as being the most technical and controversial WTO agreement. While the basic concepts of dumping and resulting injury may appear deceptively simple, complex methodology related to the calculation of dumping and injury margins, as well as the very detailed procedural requirements that authorities need to comply with before taking anti-dumping action, make the Anti-Dumping Agreement difficult to apply and understand in practice. While the book of necessity goes into great detail about the intricacies of anti-dumping law and practice, it attempts to explain the various concepts in a relatively non-technical manner by means of simplified examples that are easy to grasp for experts and non-experts alike. The book also pays extensive attention to interpretations of the various provisions of the Anti-Dumping Agreement by WTO panels and the Appellate Body. There have been more WTO cases under the Anti-Dumping Agreement than under any other WTO Agreement, reflecting both the increased recourse to anti-dumping measures by WTO members all over the world and the complexity of abiding by the WTO rules. WTO Panels and the Appellate Body, called upon to review administrative determinations and aspects of national legislation, have done a remarkable job in interpreting the WTO rules. For WTO members, wishing to impose anti-dumping measures in a WTO-consistent manner, knowledge not only of the Agreement itself, but also of such interpretations, is therefore a must.
