Great introductory book to think about the FUTURE of EUROPE!!!!!.......2006-02-23
Do you live, or are you planning to live in Europe? Then, this is a must read book.
I am very pleased that I had the chance to read this book. I have recently moved to U.K. and realized the huge impact that the EU had on each European country. You as a citizen of European Union need to understand how EU works and how it can affect your life. If you have not been following the EU development as I (I had been living outside Europe all my life), this book is a great tool to catch up. This book will guide you through the history, issues, and policies of EU which will help you understand the current situation. In the introduction and through out the book the author mentions that so many of the European people do not understand how the EU works... well, lets read this book and learn. This is an introductory book to EU and it is not difficult to read. I am a non native speaker of English but I did not have any problem understanding the content. This is a well researched book giving you up to date information with interesting data represented in figures.
Now that I have caught up with the up to date information about the EU, I am feeling very excited about the future of European Union and individual European countries (sometimes referred as "the states" of the United States of Europe). As I am studying future forecasting, this book not only helped me to understand the history and the current situations in Europe but also gave me hints and ideas about the future of Europe. With the knowledge I gained from this book, now I will understand the news better than I did before, and know what I need to look for in the development of the EU. What policies will be made to integrate the European market? Will it be "single market"? How will the EU's economic power change the balance of the world's economy? Is it going to be NO1 economic power? Cultural and political issues are more difficult to forecast... What will be identified as the culture of EU? What is the balance between the national and EU culture? Is the European Parliament (this is the only European institution that have direct influence from European voters) going to have more influence on EU policy making? Is EU heading towards federalism? The author asks "will it happen, should it happen, what form will it take, what impact will it have if it succeeds, and what impact will it have if it fails?"
I have learnt that it is important to have the right questions when you forecast about the future. This book has definitely provided me with the chance to think about questions that I should be asking for.
As I did, you will have some idea or wishes about the future of Europe by the end of the book. This is the third edition of the book, and I am sure there will be more editions to come.
Excellent Overall Review.......2005-10-24
I'm currently taking a course on the EU in which the professor gave us carte blanche to purchase our own books on the EU. I was delighted to find out that this book was written by a professor who understands what and how to communicate this information to students. Plus, since the writer is a British immigrant, he could incorporate the European perspective of the EU from first-hand experience as opposed to a vicarious one. This book was very good at providing background info (without harping too much on history) and bringing the reader up-to-speed with current events as well as personal thoughts on the EU's future. Kudos to the writer. Thank you very much. Your book was very helpful. Cheers!

Excellent College Upper Division Text.......2006-01-17
This would make a great text for an upper division class on the EU or on comparative legislative politics. I am very impressed with its theoretical sophistication with the inclusion of simple spatial models that make its content comparable with a book such as Krehbiel's _Pivotal Politics_.
Too wordy.......2000-10-31
This book is for someone who has a pretty decent knowledge of the EU and of the governmental process. The book is crammed with information but is WORDY and Hix is a bit long winded at times. He provides a lot of references to other political theorists with whom the reader should be familiar with before he or she tries to dive into this text. I found it to be nice to read as a follow up text on the EU rather than reading it on its own.
The Political System of The European Union.......2000-05-22
In the preface to 'The Political System of the European Union' the author articulates that the central aim of the book is to provide an extensive review of the recent 'explosion' of empirical and theoretical literature, concentrating on the European Union's (EU) decision making and policy process. This aim is fulfilled admirably, in a comprehensive and accessible manner. The book begins by examining the EU system of Government. However, the conventional approach of examining separately each of the governing institutions is rejected in favour of examining in turn, the Executive (Council of Ministers and Commission), Legislature (European Parliament) and Judiciary (European Court of Justice). This classification not only increases parsimony, but also allows for the 'importation' of a wider body of political science literature in which the theories of governance have been developed to an extent far beyond those seen in the sub-field of European Studies. The book subsequently turns its attention to the politics of the EU, concentrating on public opinion, parties and interest representation. Drawing extensively on recent work by Mathew Gabel, and through original analysis of Eurobarometer data, a detailed picture is provided of the stratification of support for EU integration throughout European society. One major conclusion is made - the European issue cuts across the traditional left-right dimension - encouraging Europe's main political parties to play down the European issue in domestic competition. The consequences of this conclusion are analysed in the context of the EU's 'nascent political parties' and the prospects for majoritarian democracy - prospects which Hix concludes are extremely limited. In many respects this last point captures the essence of what Hix is attempting to convey in conceptualising the EU as a political system. For despite the author's initial claims, this book represents far more than a literature review. It represents an attempt to transfer the study of the EU from the paradigm of International Relations to the mainstream of Political Science. This has lead to the misperception that 'The political system of the EU' down plays the 'rogue' nature of the EU in comparison to other political systems. It does not. And the point is made clearly that the European Union is a political system but not a state. Amongst its many strengths, one weakness reoccurs. The book investigates and explains the EU using predominantly North American political science literature. In certain respects this is its strength: as in the transposition of US Congess literature onto the European Parliament. However, in other respects, where European literature would provide a valuable comparative framework, such literature is absent. Such a focus can be excused perhaps as a necessary counterbalance to the many 'Eurocentric' volumes on the EU. In 'The Political System of the European Union', Hix has produced an accessible and much needed literature review, whilst making a persuasive case for a change in the paradigm and methods of EU studies. It is for this latter reason that the book will become a seminal text.

Useful intoduction to EU States.......2005-02-16
Major Nation-States in the European Union by J. Richard Piper (Longman) The Major Nation-States in the European Union is a text designed primarily for American students in political science, history, economics, or general social science courses who are eager to learn about the European Union (EU) and the major nation-states that are its members: France, Germany, Italy, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Spain. Unlike most other texts on contemporary Europe, it aims to integrate fully analyses of the European Union with those of its major component states rather than focusing primar¬ily either on the EU or on the nation-states.
This book comes into print at a time when the European Union is undergoing major transformations, with a newly proposed consti¬tution under debate and ten new member states having just joined the EU on May 1, 2004, bringing its membership overnight to 25 states from 15. It also comes into print at a time when the transatlantic partnership between Europe and the United States is undergoing new strains, reflected in the recent Iraq War but also present on a variety of worldwide issues includ¬ing global warming, the International Criminal Court, and trade.
Against the backdrop of these exciting de¬velopments, this book aims to provide students with an understanding of the historical back-ground, institutions, leaders, and participatorystructures and processes that shape contempo¬rary Europe and its relations with the United States and the rest of the world. The text is or¬ganized into three parts and 16 chapters, with an appendix that highlights active learning possibilities through a European Union simu¬lation. The first part of the book, focused on the European Union, provides an introductory overview (Chapter One), followed by chapters on the historical development (Chapter Two), current institutions and leaders (Chapter Three), and public policies (Chapter Four) of the EU. The second part of the book empha¬sizes the five major nation-states of the pre-2004 European Union: France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Spain. For each of these nation-states, an initial chapter discusses the development, governmental insti¬tutions, and participatory structures and processes of the country in question; a second chapter on each nation-state emphasizes the relationship between that country and the European Union. The third and final part of the book provides in Chapter Fifteen a com¬parative overview of all 15 states that were members of the EU before 2004, placing the five major states in a broad comparative con-text and enabling readers to gain an under-standing of the importance of the smaller member states of the EU also. Chapter Sixteen emphasizes Poland as the newest major nation-state in the European Union, in the context of discussing the dramatic eastward expansion of the EU and the possible future roles of Turkey and Russia vis-à-vis the EU. Finally, the ap¬pendix offers suggestions concerning active learning through a simulation of the European Union and its major nation-states.
Among the unique features of this book are its readability; its frequent highlighting of quotations to humanize the text, and its "People in the EU" boxes on prominent Europeans and their contributions. To enhance accessibility for students who may be unfamiliar with certain European or social-science terms, key concepts appear in bold print on first usage and are de-fined clearly in the Glossary beginning on page 384. Each chapter begins with a quotation per¬taining to its main themes, and several key quotations are highlighted to add a human dimension. The "People in the EU" boxes, accompanied in most cases by pictures, bring home to students the special impact of such European leaders as Margaret Thatcher, the British prime minister who presaged a movement toward free markets in both Europe and the United States; Jean-Marie Le Pen, the French nationalist who shook up French and European politics by coming in second in the French presidential elec¬tion of 2003; and Romano Prodi, the former Italian prime minister who became president of the European Commission during a time of unusual turbulence.

Book Description
Textbook on EC Law has rapidly established itself as the leading textbook on the subject. Its aim is simple: to provide a single book of manageable size which covers all the major areas of EC law - constitutional, administrative, as well as substantive. The success of this approach, both at home and abroad, is reflected in the fact that this seventh edition is appearing only twelve years after the first. This edition incorporates the institutional and This latest edition has been revised to take account of the many developments which have occurred during the last few years. All the important changes introduced by the 1997 Treaty of Amsterdam have been incorporated and challenges for the future in light of the 2000 Inter Governmental Conference and an enlarged Europe have been highlighted. As a result coverage of the EC institutions and the law-making process has been further expanded. A new chapter, dealing with the free movement of rights introduced by the Maastricht and Amsterdam treaties, has been included. The chapters relating to remedies have also been substantially updated to take into account the Court of Justice's recent case law on state liability, damages and limitation rules. These cases carry profound implications for Member States and individuals seeking to rely on Community law, as well as employers, public and private, on whom Community obligations may be imposed.
