The one medical book every family should own.......2007-03-04
This Family Medical Guide is a great reference to have on hand, even if you have Internet access to some of the great online medical resources. One of my favorite features is the flow chart that allows a person to narrow down many common ailments. If this book saves you even one unnecessary trip to the physician's office, it will have paid for itself. If this book gets you to see a physician sooner rather than later, it will have paid for itself even more. How can you lose?
Better Books are Available.......2007-02-20

Legal Guide for Women.......2005-01-08
I have not read this book from cover to cover, but almost! I read it in a hodge podge of this chapter and that chapter, that page and this page. No matter which direction I went, the book was very easy to read and to understand. It is written in regular everyday language. It is a great book. I really enjoy it and have found out a few interesting things as well. The book will be one that women will want to keep handy.
Ms. Phelan D'Isa did a better than excellent job in putting this book together for the average lay-person. Thank you.
Book Description
When it was first published in 1982,
The American Medical Association Family Medical Guide set a new standard for depth, authority, and accessibility. The completely updated and expanded third edition of this landmark guide brings this bestselling medical home reference into the nineties. It is simply the most useful, comprehensive home health reference ever published, brought to you by the nation's most respected medical authority.
This lavishly illustrated volume, prepared by a a team of over forty distinguished medical authorities under the direction of the American Medical Association, incorporates the most significant trend in health care: wellness and preventive medicine. It covers the sweeping revolution in technology and puts more emphasis on the reader as a health-care consumer. It also updates the information on the most prominent health issues of the nineties, including Alzheimer's disease, AIDS, chronic fatigue syndrome, stress, death and dying, drug abuse, and more.
The book is divided into four sections for easy reference. Part I, "Your Healthy body," contains specific tips you can use for preventive self-care and encourages you to adopt a more healthy lifestyle, with advice on diet, exercise, losing weight, reducing stress, and stopping smoking. A full-color atlas of the human body shows you the location and name of almost every organ, nerve, bone, and muscle.
Part II, "Symptoms and Self-Diagnosis," provides the clearest, most reliable aid for recognizing medical problems ever published for the layperson. Over 165 pages of unique diagnostic symptom charts with clear questions and yes/no answers will help you track down what a particular symptom may signify and advise you whether it is something you may safely treat yourself, a condition requiring a doctor's visit, or an emergency requiring immediate medical attention.
Consistently voted the book's most popular feature by readers' polls, these charts alone can save you time and money by sparing you needless visits to the doctor. Full-color photographs, used in conjunction with the charts, will help you identify various conditions and decide when to seek medical advice. An all-new diagnostic imaging section introduces full-color images of ultrasound, Doppler, MRI, CT scans, and other technologies that are becoming commonplace in doctors' offices and hospitals.
Part III, "Diseases, Disorders, and Other Problems," provides detailed, accessible, expertly illustrated articles on more than 650 medical problems. Separate sections address the special problems of men, women, couples, infants and children, adolescents, and older people, including a comprehensive section on pregnancy and childbirth.
Part IV of the guide, "Caring for the Sick," covers all the basics of professional medical care, home nursing, and caregiving. You'll learn how to choose a personal physician, how to get the most out of your hospital's services, what your rights as a patient are, and how to cope with a sick child or older person or someone with a terminal illness. You'll also find a glossary of over 300 medical terms and a color-coded section on first aid that includes the most up-to-date CPR positions and other lifesaving information.
The American Medical Association is committed to the principle that, as patients and health consumers, we need to do all we can to work more effectively with our physicians and health care teams. This third edition of the
Family Medical Guide -- easy to understand, superbly designed, beautifully illustrated, and brimming with up-to-date information -- will help you and your family stay healthy and help you create an effective partnership with your doctor when you need it. It belongs on every family's reference shelf.
Customer Reviews:
Best at-home diagnosis.......2006-01-10
My 25 year old will soon have a baby. I will be giving her this book. It helped my throughout her childhood. She still calls me to check symptoms and do a "mom" diagnosis.
Trusted for 19 years.......2005-05-14
I'm a 19 year old college student. When I was two years old my grandparents gave my parents a copy of the AMA Family Medical Guide. With two children and another on the way, they could easily see that this book would be used time and time again. I have early childhood memories of flipping through the pages of this book and looking at the pictures. I have later memories of flipping through the pages and reading about different conditions and diseases and general anatomy. And now, even though I dont have any children of my own, I still go back to this book to reference symptoms and facts that I hear about in day-to-day conversation. Symptom flow charts are excellent.
Highly recommended!
Great medical reference book.......2005-03-20
Everyone should have a medical reference book at home (especially if you have kids), and this is a good one.
There are several things that I like about the book. First, there is a "self-diagnosis" chart section in the front. If you have a bad headache, stiff neck, sick stomach, etc, you can go through the flowchart and get an idea of what might be wrong. This is not to replace a doctor's diagnosis, but it really helps me determine if I'm being overly-concerned or if I should see a doctor. I definitely use that section of the book.
There are also sections of the different systems of the body that include descriptions of diseases. A little while back I was having problems with my digestive system. It really helped to read the section on colitis and Crohn's disease to understand more about them so that when my doctor discussed them, I could better understand him.
There are also sections on First Aide, caregiving at home, selecting physicians, and even a section on terminal illness and death. Though those last few items are things we don't really want to think about, there is information about how to handle making arrangements and whatever else needs to be done.
There is also a drug dictionary in the back which can come in handy, plus a medical glossary.
Overall, I'm glad that I added this book to my library. It has an abundance of useful information about illness and medicine. I do have another medical reference guide as well, but it's not nearly this comprehensive. I think everyone should have a book like this on their shelves.
A hypochondriac's dream!.......2003-06-27
Okay, I'm not a hypochondriac, sorry. My mother purchased an earlier edition of this book, published in 1982. I had that edition until I recently ordered this one to replace it.
I should preface the rest of my review by saying that I have a definite interest in medicine, and planned to become a paramedic. I did take my EMT-B certification (Emergency Medical Techinician-Basic) a few years ago, and this book was one of my resources for studying for tests and answering homework questions. So, I have a clear INTEREST in all things medical, and really enjoy just browsing through this book.
I find that I look things up in this book at least once a week. Sometimes I'll hear the name of a disease or illness on TV and out of curiousity to know more, I'll look it up. If I have a strange symptom, I'll look that up. I am single with no children, but this book would be an invaluable first-aid resource for a family with children or for anyone taking care of a sick or elderly friend or family member.
My favorite aspects of this book are the glossary of medical terms, the very complete and easy-to-use index, and the medication section. Several times I have looked up a medication to determine if it is safe to take with other medications, or to see if side effects are normal.
I think every household should have a copy of this book. Most of the information is timeless and very informative.
Fabulous starting point and resource.......2002-11-22
I am a nurse practitioner and find this book to be very useful as a resource for my patients. When a patient or family member comes down with a new diagnosis, most people want more information to learn more about it. I use this book as a teaching tool so that they can start to learn about their health and personal illnesses. It lays a good foundation for initial health information. I personally like its emphasis on preventive care. It can also help you decide whether an ache or pain you have is serious enough to seek medical attention or not. This book is especially useful to anyone who is not in the medical field and needs immediate information about health or is just interested about health and disease. I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
Informative & well-written.......2007-09-26
I bought this book for a class in Holistic Health Practices. It is well organized and well written. It is a little boring to read, because there are no illustrations or graphs. It gives a very good overview of all the alternative medical systems from acupuncture, ayurveda, chiropractic, osteopathy, homeopathy, etc., explaining how each system evolved, how it sees the patient and how it treats illnesses and which conditions it is good for. I highly recommend it if you are interested in taking charge of your health via alternative medicine or to supplement what western medicine can do for you.
My fave!.......2006-11-10
Out of five books, I chose this one on Holistic Health. Its scope just can't be matched. After checking it out from our enormous library in Fresno, I decided to buy it on Amazon for its constant reference value. I also decided to read it from cover to cover - not just hit and miss; otherwise, I might miss something.
Informative, Enjoyable Tome.......2005-10-27
This book is on my shelf next to Ultraprevention, another winner in the introductory holistic genre. Quite frankly, it's amazing how most of us have the power to transform our health to optimal levels, yet so many are too skeptical, or dare I say too lazy, to do the simple things needed...eat well, keep the mind clear, etc. The solution to the problem of disease does not always have to be complicated. Nutrition especially has the potential to be as potent as medication, without the side effects.
As someone who believes in the merit of holistic health, this book made perfect sense to me and was enjoyable as well as informative. I would imagine that those who are like-minded would critique this book similarly. To those who typically question the value of holistic medicine, keep an open mind and give this book (and the advice within) a genuine try.
American Holistic Association Guide & The Winkle Cure.......2005-09-05
These books were required reading in my Holistic practice. I found both these books very informative. I put to practice some information found in the Wrinkle Cure book and have been getting comments that I now look 40 when in actuallity I am 62. I have been able to pass this information onto some of my patients and they are trying it on themselves. The American Holistic Association Guide reinforced some of the teachings that I had just finished in getting my degree in the Holistic Method of healing. Both books were very interesting.
The best overview of holistic therapies I've ever read.......2003-05-02
I couldn't disagree more with the reviewer who called this book a rehash of Burton Goldberg's Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide (which I also highly recommend). Yes, the Guide is a wonderful book, and for that matter, Trivieri, the author of this book, also served as the editor and writer for the Guide. But to call his book a "rehash" couldn't be farther from the truth. I have read over a hundred books on the subject of holistic healing/alternative medicine, and never before have I read a book that so wonderfully explains the major therapies of holistic medicine and what it means to be healthy in "body, mind, and spirit," the way Trivieri's book does. The therapies he writes about here are covered in far more depth than in the Definitive Guide, and they are explained in a manner that makes them far more understandable and credible to readers who are unfamiliar with them. The chapter on Yoga alone was an eye opener for me. What I also like about this book are the many studies cited in support of each therapy, as well as the case histories that beautifully illustrate how effective they can be.
It also helps that each chapter contains the authoritative voice of a top expert in each modality.
I rate this book 5 stars because of its combination of comprehensive scholarship and understandability. By all means, buy it if you are at all interested in learning about proven alternatives to drugs and surgery that only treat symptoms, not the causes of dis-ease!

The American Medical Association Complete Guide to Your Children's Health provides parents with a quick, highly comprehensive look at normal childhood development patterns, safety and educational concerns, and childhood illness and disease. From A to Z, there's a lot that parents need to know about their children's health and development, and this big book purports to supply it all. It does, though with only 700 pages, some of the subjects are handled tersely, without the nuances that child rearing requires. This terseness also means that browsing through this book is not recommended for parents who tend to worry--with so many subjects covered so briefly, the authors don't pause to reassure. Over half the book is devoted to an easy-to-read encyclopedia on childhood diseases and disorders (from acne to yeast infections) that describes, and in some cases illustrates, hundreds of conditions. The guide is best when it sticks to medical and developmental rather than social information: the complete atlas of the child's body, for example, is a great resource for parents and kids. And the many symptom charts, designed to help parents diagnose illness so they can decide whether to home-treat or get medical help, are superior--and may save lives. --Ericka Lutz
Book Description
Whether you're cradling your newborn just home from the hospital, child-proofing your home for your toddler, taking your preschooler for vaccinations, coping with your child's first trip to the emergency room, or trying to answer your teen-ager's pressing health questions, the American Medical Association Complete Guide to Your Children's Health is the one volume you'll turn to over and over again. It's the most comprehensive guide ever available to address the health needs of children from infancy through adolescence; in fact, it's really three books in one.
Part I covers "Your Healthy Child From Birth Through Adolescence." The chapter on newborns (birth to 3 months) tells you what you need to know about feeding your baby; solving sleep problems; changing, bathing, and dressing your baby; and recognizing critical signposts of growth and development. The chapter on infants (3 to 12 months) covers continuing developmental milestones, explains how your baby learns language, and offers advice on how to cope with your child's changing needs in terms of nutrition, sleep, and exercise. If you have a toddler (l to 3 years), you'll learn about toilet training; emotional, social, and intellectual development; how to establish loving discipline and how to encourage your child's communication skills. The chapter on preschoolers (3 to 5 years) explains the exciting developments that occur during this stage of rapid intellectual and emotional growth. The chapter on school-age children (5 to 11 years) addresses how to help kids succeed in school and resist cigarettes and alcohol and other drugs. The chapter on preteens and adolescents (11 to 21 years) explains puberty, body image, self-care, healthy sexuality, and more.
In Part 2, "Caring for Your Child's Health," you'll get good advice on finding quality child care, whether you're choosing a nanny, family day care, a day-care center, or an after-school program. You'll learn how to select the right pediatrician and what vaccinations, routine tests and screenings, and dental care your child will need as he or she grows. You'll learn how to baby- and child-proof your home, care for a sick child, and nurture your child's emotional health. Finally, you'll learn how to help a child with special health needs.
Part 3 is an exhaustive medical encyclopedia that offers detailed information on more than 300 childhood diseases and disorders. A concise, clearly illustrated guide to first aid shows you how to perform CPR and handle emergencies from shock, choking, and poisoning to burns, bites, and broken bones.
Is it a stuffy nose or something more serious? Twenty symptoms charts in a clear question-and-answer format help you find the possible causes of many common childhood symptoms (e.g., crying, fever, feeding problems, sleep problems, earache), either directing you to other parts of the book for more detailed information, advising you about treating the problem at home, or recommending medical attention for your child. A full-color atlas of the human body will help you understand how your child's body works. A full-color diagnostic skin-rash chart will help you decide whether it's chickenpox, poison ivy, or hives.
Profusely illustrated with more than 350 photographs, drawings, and charts, this highly readable volume is the closest thing to a pediatrician on call and an indispensable guide for every concerned parent.
The American Medical Association's bestselling health library includes the AMA Encyclopedia of Medicine; the AMA Family Medical Guide, third edition; the AMA Complete Guide to Women's Health; the AMA Guide to Your Family's Symptoms; and the AMA Handbook of First Aid and Emergency Care.
