Customer Reviews:
A Must Own Book for Serious Residential Do-It-Yourselfers.......2006-06-17
This book is an excellent reference book for use in designing, planning, and building a new house or remodeling an existing one. Whenever I plan on doing something on the house, I double check with this reference before finishing my designs and plans. It's a must own book for serious do-it-yourselfers.
Readers' Digest Version of AGS.......2005-04-15
Although these editions change little, this review is based upon AGS 10th Ed. & AGSRC 2003.
Negative:
This is bascially a regurgitation of the more complete Architectural Graphics Standards, distilled to a "residential" focus but appears as volumous because some details have been photo-enlarged (in poor-average quality). Few, if any new residential details/information has been provided.
Positive:
Those ONLY interested in residential construction and NOT requiring a full brace of ALL details will find this quite a good value - compare its price to Architectural Graphics Standards.
Recommendation:
Anyone in construction should have one, but not both of these books as a prime resource. The content does improve every year, although some years it's like watching grass grow.
Challenge:
IF there are numerous portions of the Residential version that are unique and new to it, exclusive of passages in the larger AGS version - I would really appreciate a review that contains how to locate these passages, as I've spent enough time trying to find them. If enough of these exist, it would give thought of updating this resource once in awhile.
One volume encyclopedia.......2003-11-25
Experienced readers will benefit from its brief summaries and drawings covering the broadest range of topics imaginable. Some economizing is evident in the paper and printing quality, some of the drawings look 50 years old, but there is lots of reference information, like span tables, solar position data, etc. Probably not the last word on every topic, but still worth consulting.
A wonderful resource.......2003-03-27
Following in the terrific legacy of the benchmark Architectural Graphic Standards book, this edition clearly makes building for residences an easier task. I've found innumerable details that I've used in my residential practice on a daily basis, details not found in other reference books. Of particular help are the pages that give an overview of how parts of a house interconnect with each other, such as foundation-to-framing. Also, there is a wealth of info on HVAC, new window technology and other things I've found very, very helpful.

Old and busted.......2007-05-05
I have always found this book to be cumbersome, difficult to navigate, poorly organized, and lacking in sufficient detail. But of course for years it was basically the only game in town, so everyone relied on it. Those days are over. I recently purchased Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards, and it is an outstanding book. If you're trying to decide which one to buy, definitely get Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards instead. And even if you already own Time-Saver Standards, do yourself a huge favor and buy Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards anyway. It covers everything that Time-Saver Standards does plus numerous other topics, all with much better explanations and details. To top things off, it has FAR more graphics and the entire book is better organized an easier to navigate than Time-Saver Standards.
Usefulness.......2006-07-16
As a practicing L.A., I have bought several McGraw-Hill Construction Books. I get a similar result each time: They seem on first look to fulfill the promise, but I found they don't well serve the need in real life. I get far better use out of Architectural Graphic Standards, and I'm looking forward to Wiley's Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards.
buy the book, forget the CD-ROM version.......2005-03-28
I've got the book and was hoping the CD-ROM would enhance using the book, but it doesn't. The content is very slim compared to the book, and the CAD drawings that are included are also of very limited use. Don't bother with the CD-ROM version of TSSLA.
This book is a must!!!!.......2004-02-06
A great book to have. It was a required text for my site technology classes. Kept referring to it. Lots of information. It should be on everyone's bookcase if you're a Landscape Architect student or already in the profession. I highly recommend it.

Straightforward.......2007-09-23
This is a very easy to follow guide to wood frame construction. I recommend it as a basic reference.
Excellent Resource for Wood Frame Construction.......2007-05-31
This is a wonderful book to have on the reference shelf. It answers so many questions about wood frame construction in a clear manner with great graphic depictions.
Invaluable for Anyone Who Wants to Build.......2007-04-09
I am a beginning amateur builder of outbuildings on my property, and this book is wonderful. Easy to understand, the pictures are very descriptive. It is all I need. I gave a beat-up copy (after ordering another for myself) to a friend who just got his contractor's license and the next day he acted as though I'd given him gold. I recommend getting the spiral bound version - so much easier to use on the job site. This book cannot be rated high enough.
Good graphic presentaion of wood frame construction.......2007-03-17
This book is a good tool for anyone, do-it-yourselfer or not, to grasp how North American homes are put together. An excellent tool to learn the nomenclature of houses and house construction. I missed a discussion of the the reasons for and the pros and cons of the various methods. On the other hand, the lack of text is a strongpoint of this book, at least for those who want to quickly get up to speed on home construction.
Graphic Guide to Frame Construction: Details for Builders and Designers (For Pros by Pros).......2007-01-11
great book. Recommend it to anyone how would like to learn about framing.

Customer Reviews:
Good reference book but boring.......2002-01-16
Has lots of tables and charts, and is adequately explained. The author also writes study guides for standardized architecture tests, and that pretty much sums up the style: no opinions, just facts. Very thorough though. Personally I don't need a whole chapter on locks, but I suppose there are those who do. Presentation and graphics are a bit low-rent for an architecture book.
Thorough knowledge for Interior construction and details.......2001-03-27
This book should be on the shelves of every interior designer- it's so thorough that it's a little cumbersome at first. It should be used as a reference book, it gives chapter-by-chapter explanations on the specifics for the construction and application of windows, casegoods, partitions, etc. If there is ever any doubt in a designers mind as to how exactly something is constructed or works when it comes to the specifics of interior design, this book's for you.
Book Description
This pioneering textbook details how construction drawings are used to implement the construction process. It offers an overview of construction drawing basics as well as thorough coverage of standard construction sequence, including site work, foundations, structural systems, and interior work and finishes.
Customer Reviews:
Great primer for students, architects, and engineers.......2004-06-28
Bisharat's book is a must for any student (experienced technician or school neophyte) of the design and construction process. It is well illustrated, factual, and accurately explains how the architect /engineer's ideas get transferred to paper and then into reality.
Construction Consultant.......2004-06-11
If you are a student, a craftsperson, superintendent, manager,or designer-this book should be open on your desk (and not on your bookshelf).

AAE 330.......2007-08-17
I thought the book itself was really interesting although a little confusing. Especially when I actually had to use it for class assignments!
Integrated Review of Two Top Books That Mesh Well.......2007-07-11
Although I normally read books in twos and threes on the same topic to gain varied perspectives, this is the first time I am writing a single review encompassing two books. They mesh together so well that I cannot imagine studying this subject without having BOTH in hand.
The two books are Sun, Wind & Light: Architectural Design Strategies, 2nd Edition and The HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design.
Start with the introduction in the Guidebook, which is blessed with a Foreword from Paul Hawken and see especially page 13 where the cost benefits are shown, with 48% energy savings for Gold, 30% for Silver, and 28% for Certified. See also the illustration on page 15 that I have reproduced in the image I am loading for both books: the old decision model was Cost at the top, with Schedule and Quality anchoring the triangle. the new decision model still has cost at the top, but Schedule and Human Health, Safety, & Comfort are on corners of this new pentagon, and the bottom is achored by Quality and Ecology, or what Paul Hawken would call in his books, "true cost" to the Earth and Humanitas.
NOW shift to the Contents and the Detailed Contents of Sun, Wind, & Light. As one reviewer notes, this is a course book. I did not recognize it as such, I saw it as one of the most gifted complete collection of factors to learn and apply that I have ever seen for ANY topic of study. The content and organization of this book is nothing short of Nobel-level "wow." Finish going through this book.
NOW go back to the first 218 pages of the Handbook, and study the checklists and varied helpful boxes and explanations. The rest of the book (217-459) is case studies of specific buildings, each a few pages, that can be left for last.
At this point, I went into the Glossaries and Bibliographies of both books. Each is distinct, neither supplants the other. They must be taken together. I read Glossaries, and Indices, as content, and use them as a form of "second look" (in extremely complex books, this is actually where I start).
NOW go back to the Case Studies in the Handbook, and read each from the point of view of what "take away" lessons are there for your own building.
Reading these two books was a real treat. Outside my office kitchen is a deck with an 11 point system for attracting birds from bluebirds and bluejays to cardinals, gold finches, two kinds of woodpecker, and a flicker as well as the more common birds. I believe in diversity, and I believe that if we don't get our act together and start living up to the ideals of Natural Capitalism (see other recommended books below), our world will go sterile and dark before out great-grandchilden can share in the beauty of this planet. These two books are part of the solution, and I am in serious awe of those who made them available to all of us, and at reasonable prices to boot. Well done!!!

Not so useful.......2007-03-09
So instead of getting a manual on how to design a building to maximize sun, wind, and light, what I got was a lengthy math book on how to quantitatively analyze the sun, light and wind in existing conditions.... There are some nuggets of good info but I don't see myself getting very much out of the book in general.
good info poorly written.......2007-02-26
These guys need a third author (or good editor) who knows how to present ideas clearly, directly and in an intuivive manner. This information is dense enough without unnecessarily dense language which makes the material more difficult to use.
Great book of information about one's environment.......2006-11-10
Must have for the architecture student. Very informative for those who are not. Comprehensive.
Book Description
Most architectural standards references contain thousands of pages of details-overwhelmingly more than architects need to know to know on any given day. Now there is a place where architects can find vital information essential to planning and executing architectural projects of all shapes and sizes-in a format that is small enough to carry anywhere. Materials, Structures, and Standards distills the data provided in standard architectural volumes and offers and easy-to-use reference for the most indispensable-and most requested-types of architectural information.
Part 1, "Building an Architectural Project," addresses basic geometry, architectural drawing types, AutoCAD guidelines, building codes, accessibility issues, structural and mechanical systems, conventional building components, and sustainable design. Part 2, "Materials," provides a detailed catalog of wood, masonry and brick, metals, concrete, and interior finishes. Also included are an illustrated glossary of architectural terms and a cross-referenced guide to the most helpful books, organizations, and websites.
Customer Reviews:
Only very basic information, not intended for professionals!.......2007-04-28
I am a licensed architect, and have been in professional practice now for 15 years. I thought this book was going to offer me some of the common reference tables I need, or perhaps some of the general ADA measurements that must be exact, but it fell well short of my expectations.
It's not really suitable for anyone in the design profession, and I think much of the book is littered with detailing and CAD standards that are not necessary for your normal do-it-yourselfer or home builder. I think it may be appropriate for architecture students, however, it really does not have sufficient information to instruct students, and much of the material selection information and detailing is flat elementary.
a must reference for recent grads .......2007-03-25
This guide contains basic knowledge for getting up to speed quickly in preparing design and construction documents. It is a time saver. This guide is specially useful for those who have just graduated and working at a firm. I reference this book at least once a day. It is also priced reasonably for the architects budget.
great summary reference.......2007-03-13
this little book is great for all the minor everyday details, rules and standards you can never remember precisely, and are usually scattered across several different (large and expensive) reference sets. while in no way replacing these volumes, it certainly minimizes your time spent paging through them, or going online - - a highly recommended desktop reference.
Good...For It's Purpose.......2007-03-13
Although it did have a lot of useful information, it was nothing you couldn't find on the internet. It was written in "textbook" style, and didn't have much besides the facts.
Great Reference tool.......2007-01-12
This book is a great quick reference tool. It has all of the essentials you need in the design field and very easy to read and access QUICKLY!

Book Description
This well-illustrated text teaches the basic skills needed to read, study, and understand construction drawings. It features a detailed analysis of a set of residential plans. Pictorial drawings accompany orthographic plan drawings to help students visualize the meaning of the plan drawing. Construction technology students taking beginning and intermediate plan reading courses will also learn about important related areas that affect plan development, such as building codes, materials, and mathematics applications. There is ample construction data throughout the text's eight sections, one of which consists of assignments for three sets of full-size construction plans provided. Review questions are also featured at the end of each section. ALSO AVAILABLE INSTRUCTOR SUPPLEMENTS CALL CUSTOMER SUPPORT TO ORDER Instructor's Guide, ISBN: 0-7668-0840-8
Customer Reviews:
Great for Educational Purposes.......2003-12-15
This book a good introduction for blueprint reading, there are 2D and 3D drawings that help readers to visualize the information on the drawings. At the end of each chapter are review questions and definitions of key words, which are useful especially for students.
It comes with large construction drawings on three projects that were actually built. Although they should have printed them on separate pieces of paper instead of having them on both sides of the sheet, this makes it hard to compare and study those construction drawings.
Also, the paper used for publication I find is a bit thin, you have to read the textbook on a flat surface, otherwise it will curl up. The same goes with the construction drawings, after a couple of times of folding and un-folding, the papers tend to tear easily.
I would recommend this book for anyone interested in the building industry.
Book Description
The external facades of a building are more than a protective mantle, or an intelligent skin regulating temperature and light, they also determine its very appearance. By unusual choices of materials and the use of complex technology, facades have become increasingly significant in recent years. External surfaces are being perceived as an integral part of the building and are therefore being designed as such. This volume focuses on the wide-ranging aspects of facade design, from the selection and use of materials to the advanced technical possibilities now open to the architect. A wide array of carefully selected international examples show the theory in the practice. All plans, details, and large scale sections of the facades have been researched with the high degree of competence typical of the editorial staff from the review Detail. Expert authors provide the essential information needed to plan and design facades and elucidate on the latest developments in technology and materials.
Customer Reviews:
In Detail Series sets a new standard for contemporary architecture.......2007-08-04
I cannot say enough about the quality of this entire series, and this book is among the best of the set. Few architecture books are of this high quality; one usually expects some level of editorial compromise; either we get lightweight analysis and documentation with beautiful photographs, or you get overly complex, teched out stuff that doesn't understand the fundamental concepts. Or it's just bad architecture. But this entire series, from the quality of the writing, the great beauty and clarity of the drawings, and finally to the aptness and excellence of the finished architecture; it represents the new state of the art. Buy the whole series, but start with this one and "Building Simply", which I'll rave about separately.
Amazing reference and read.......2007-07-27
A must have for all architects and those interested in how buildings come together and the importance the skin plays. As specially when trying new materials.
Spectacular buildings with unique sidings.......2007-03-11
There was a time when there was no question as to what the outside skin of a building was going to be, glass alternating with metal panels. Something monolithic looking like the UN building.
Now significant advances in materials, architectural design, creative use of conventional materials like shingles, concrete, or sprayed on foam are producing building where the skin becomes more than just what you see.
The book is organized into two main sections. The first third or so is used to describe the general changes that have been taking place in the general area of building skins.
The last two thirds show where various treatments have been used in actual buildings. The buildings vary from tiny, micro houses to athletic stadiums, stores to factories.
This is European publication. Most of the buildings are in Europe, with a few from Japan. They represent the most significant advances in design I have seen in a long time.
Great Book.......2007-02-22
Great examples of innovative building skins with good details.
Highly recommended for architects and architecture lovers.
very comprehensive usage of modern materials........2006-07-10
The book describes simple and neat building enclosure design in detail and palette. The book should be applicable to architects or designers who aspire to work in minimalism or modernism and who desire to improve the building enclosure design to be more insighfully creative and blight. Through the publication good samples are reviewed to support reader's imagination and to confirm the practicality of use.
