The Fundamental Contract Text.......2007-06-20
This "student" text, bought for my daughter who is entering law school in the fall, is the reference any lawyer (or interested non-lawyer) should have at their fingertips.
Not very clear or concise.......2007-06-02
As the title indicates, this text is not very clear on concise. The authors introduce you too a great deal of information on contract law, which on the surface appears to be very helpful, until of course, you begin to read the text. Once you begin to read it, you will become confused as the shear amount of material thrown at you is difficult to understand and is written in incredibly long, run on sentences.
Recomend that you get an Emanual outline instead
Good but not needed for contracts class.......2006-12-21
I bought this book because I needed a better understanding of contracts during my 1L year. This book expanded upon the contracts outline I already had, put out by the same authors, C&P. This horn book was helpful for understanding a few areas more in depth, especially for another class where I needed to dig deeper than what was taught in contracts. On one hand, this book was readily available in the school library (probably yours too) and therefore was probably not a necessary purchase. On the other hand, it will probably be a more useful book for me in and out of practice, since lawyers and non-lawyers alike use contracts throughout life.
Could have been better, I think.......2006-10-14
Well, the fact that I'm writing a review about this book, while it's sitting open on my desk next to my computer, open and not being read, might be some evidence of how I'm enjoying this book. This book just goes on and on in complex an unclear language about a subject which shouldn't be so difficult. This book is not clear or easy to understand at all. Every sentence is awkward and followed by a footnote, and the masses of footnotes together take up half of EACH page (!), making this work look like a research project for a PhD publication. I have the casebook in this series, and sometimes it seems reading the cases alone will bring more clarity. And it turns to be true! This book might be good if you're advanced-contracts and want to know every little detail, or as an advanced reference later on, to look something up like in an encyclopedia. Some concepts, which should be pretty clear just get too in-depth coverage in this book. It's too complex for a first-year student. Sometimes it starts describing the different views out there, and then there's a jumble in your head as to what the law really is. I wish the author used his own knowledge and fluid language more than footnoted ideas from other authors.
Best used as a doorstop........2006-01-14
This book tells you nothing that the U.C.C., Restatement 2nd, and a basic cases and examples book (Farnsworth, for instance) doesn't already tell you. This hornbook, however, is much denser and dryer than these other texts. Surely there must be better study texts out there than this for the first-year Contracts student.
To give you a taste of this literary castor oil, the first chapter asks the question, "What is a contract?" Then it proceeds for paragraphs upon dense paragraphs about what some obscure academic once said a contract is. Then C&P say that they don't like that explanation (without really explaining why very well). This is repeated over and over again. Then they conclude by saying, Golly gee, we'll be darned, but we really don't know what one of them contract thingies is, but we'll talk about them in the most boring way possible for the next several hundred pages using as many words as we possibly can in order to justify our royalties.
Later, the book covers history of contracts, and the concepts of debt, assumpsit, and covenant, but in a very dense and dry manner lacking in well-communicated insight (again, Farnsworth's casebook, for example, is much more direct and enlightening). This is par for the course with C&P.
If you really want to understand Contract law better, just review various sections of the Restatement 2nd of Contracts, and the comments thereto. That is a shorter and more direct read, and depending upon your law school, you probably have to know what the Restatement 2nd says anyway. May as well get it straight from the horse's mouth instead of reading some law geeks overpostulate on it.

Customer Reviews:
Very good content marred by poor editing.......2006-01-05
A small number of reviewers were impressed by this work and that accolade is understandable and, for the most part, well warranted. I found Mr. Stopford's book was a comprehensive and detailed discussion of the arcane field of maritime economics and finance. I believe that anyone interested in this field, particularly maritime attorneys, ship financing brokers, maritime finance department representatives, ocean carrier finance departments, and other players will find it very useful. However, I regret that I cannot give this work five stars. The volume I purchased contains far too many spelling and grammatical mistakes, no doubt due to poor editing by Routledge. These spelling and other errors are not just small mistakes that can be overlooked. There are far too many distracting errors that greatly undermine the usefulness of the book. At times, I found it very difficult to even follow the book's lessons because spelling and grammatical errors made it hard, if not impossible, to determine what lesson Mr. Stopford was trying to impart to the reader. It's a shame such a good book's lessons were marred and undermined by such shoddy editing.
The Bible of Shipping.......2005-06-23
It is the Bible of Shipping, a must for anyone interested on the Maritime World
Best book ever on Maritime Economics.......2004-03-19
Maritime Economics by Martin Stopford is not only the most comprehensive and understandable introduction to the world of shipping but today also a "must have read" for newcomers to both the shipping and vessel finance industries. Well written, close to real life practice. Just read it and get convinced

About the Book--
Since deregulation in 1978, airlines have undergone profound changes. And, much has changed since the first edition of this book was published in 1997. In the first decade of the New Millennium, the airlines are in dire straits and stuggling to recover from the worst economic crisis in their entire history. The trauma was brought on by a series of setbacks that began with airline deregulation, followed by a rash of consumer complaints and safety concers, constrained airport capacity resulting in inordinate traffic delays, economic recessions and spikes in oil prices, two wars in the Middle East, and topped off by acts of terrorism around the world and a system now constrained by heightened alert and enhanced security procedures.
Legacy airlines are facing the possibility of extinction unless they can successfully reorganize to combat a proliferation of low-cost carreirs. Yet the new, low-cost point-to-point model is only a partial answer. As described in this book, the emerging air transportation system is evolving into six principal market niches. Airports, too, are evolving to conform to the carriers that use them. Likewise, the countervailing forces driving the production of aircraft into the future are frequency versus capacity, speed versus efficiency and safety, customer service and cost. Which of these alternatives to pursue is at the heart of the strategic struggle for dominance between Airbus and Boeing.
This book is a companion volume in an Air Transport Series, comprised of Air Transportation: Foundations for the 21st Centruy, 2nd ed. and Airline Management: Stategies for the 21st Century, 2nd ed. It is the purpose of this series to acquaint the reader with the principal elements of air transportation hsitory, airline economics, business, finance, marketing, regulation, and management--to bring all the essential elements of commercial aviation within the two-volume series.

Just OK.......2007-05-14
The book does have detailed information on how to beat various traffic violation tickets and provides useful links. However, I bought the book looking for information on camera tickets. In fact, the back cover of the book specifically states that the book contains sections on camera tickets. Looked through the entire book and nothing - not a single sentence on the subject.
singing its praises.......2007-03-15
you need to get this book if you were ever a victim of the traffic codes that plague our country. attorney brown does a great job in breaking down the court procedures and even provide dialogue to use in certain circumstances.
Sticking it to the Man.......2007-02-22
I've been to traffic court many, many times and I always feel like I'm misunderstanding something because I get shafted left and right. As it turns out, I was misunderstanding something. I flew through this book, which is odd because it's technically a law book, but it's written in a very accessible way. It's good to just have the knowledge of how to stand up for yourself, and even if you don't stand a chance in court, you at least know what to sat, when to say it, and what the heck is going on. I highly recommend this to anyone considering buying it.
Good Book, very helpful!!!!.......2007-01-10
It's detailed every step for you to beat your ticket in the court. Read it if you have a ticket, and want to go to the court for winning.
Absolutely fabulous.......2006-11-23
An awsome book. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I went to court and won, solely based on the information provided in this book. My traffic citation claimed that I was going 22 over the limit. I submitted a request for discovery to the prosecuting agency, modifying one of the forms included in this book. In court, I made a motion for dismissal of the charges against me, using the instructions provided in this book. The prosecutor acknowledged that he did not honor my request for discovery. The judge dismissed the case. If you received a traffic ticket, it is worth fighting it, using the information in this book.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource! We should all fight back.......2007-05-11
It is getting rediculous these days , simply how many tickets are issued without any consideration. Recently in california (san jose) the cops have even allocated a special group to give as many tickets. I found that in the last 3 months the group of 5 cops issued a total of 9000 tickets. I helped few of my friends to fight back with 90% success rate.
This book is a very good resource. Every one of us should fight back. The important thing is to make sure they spend more resources, money and time in resolving your discovery requests than they will get from your ticket fines. The trick is to ask for discoveries on things you suspect that maybe a problem. For e.g initating discovery requests such as radar calibration proof (for speeding tickets), condition of traffic lights (for e.g some yellow lights are quicker than others, in red light violation, or right turn without stop), electric lines affecting radars, condition of road (pot holes etc), and so on. you name it. You can find a lot more in this book. Also do some internet research.
I'm not saying that if you truly made a drastic mistake, you should do this. But very minor things that doesn't affect anyone , are being fined rediculous amounts these days.
If you win, you pay nothing and they spend already money and resources on the discoveries. If you loose, you pay the fine anyway, which you'll be paying if you don't fight it.
If enough of us fight back with help from books like these, they will do something to reduce the fines, and issue only tickets to reasonable and drastic mistakes.
Only 1 out of every 50 traffic tickets are disputed.......2006-10-18
Police officers know this statistic and that's one reason why they write tickets that they know wouldn't hold water! That's one of the points in this book. But more importantly the author explains clearly exactly what vehicle code you've been accused of and how you might benefit from disputing it. For example: the most common vehicle code violation in California is Section 22350. Do you know what that means? The author explains it in an easy to understand way. There are something like 5 conditions that have to be met to prove your guilt (I don't have the book right in front of me at the moment). He also explains that ALL of the conditions of Section 22350 have to be met in order for you to be found guilty. Not one or most of the conditions, but ALL of them. I found it pretty easy to get out of one of the conditions and the judge had no choice but to dismiss the charge.
First thing that happens is the officer is given a chance to say his part. He rants on and on about how he's the radar god, the gun was calibrated that morning, blah blah blah. Then it's your turn. Yes you're nervous, but you're also prepared! I said that I didn't dispute the radar's accuracy or the officer's ability to use it, and went on to my defense using the information learned in the book. I highly recommend it. For me, it was worth every penny...and another $421 on top of that ;-)
Well organized and written - but you'll probably lose your case.......2006-09-29
I really liked the way the book was orgnaized and written. There is a lot here yet it is easy to read. On the other hand, parts seem to conflict with what the judge and a lawyer friend told me. In particular, the book implied to me that without intent to break the law or negligence you have a chance to win. But apparently this rule of law does not apply to traffic cases. Whatever, I figured I was going to lose my case (I did, but with a slightly reduced fine) but I enjoyed learning about how the system works.
So I'd recommend the book if you like to know what's going on, but don't expect it to rescue you.
excellent resource in california.......2006-09-05
this book was very helpful in educating me in how to argue my case, it has little tips on how to throw off the officer's rhythm, and make you come across as knowledgable. Just realize you need to buy the book early, and do your research. If the judge sees an unprepared idiot who is just trying to pull a he said / she said game, you will have to pay.
EXCELLENT Resource - lots of tips.......2005-08-24
Just had my ticket dismissed today! This is a great book - can't guarantee that you'll win, but certainly gives you the tools necessary to defend yourself properly. Highly recommended.
