1 out of 5 stars Necessary, but useless.......2006-07-06

I was really looking forward to the class this book was necessary for. And while I learned a lot of interesting material, almost none of it was from the text. Nothing that i'm going to carry away from this class was learned from the book. While it gave the trival bits of information that were located in the test material, most of those you could gather from simple common sense. If you want to get anything out of a class using this as a text, hope your prof. likes to lecture. Otherwise... you're really going to hate it.

1 out of 5 stars Completely worthless.......2005-01-04

How do I even start on this book? A text for a class in college I bought this book looking forward to it, despite the drear subject. As the class progressed I found this book to contain contradicting information in many areas. In addition to this, the graphs are completely unintelligible, even our prof. gave up trying to make sense of them. The book also doesn't discuss the psychology of dying, but rather the practical aspects and biology of dying. As this class was a soc/psy class, this wasn't very helpful. If you're a prof. considering this text- please think again!

In 1927, Walter Evans-Wentz published his translation of an obscure Tibetan Nyingma text and called it the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Popular Tibetan teacher Sogyal Rinpoche has transformed that ancient text, conveying a perennial philosophy that is at once religious, scientific, and practical. Through extraordinary anecdotes and stories from religious traditions East and West, Rinpoche introduces the reader to the fundamentals of Tibetan Buddhism, moving gradually to the topics of death and dying. Death turns out to be less of a crisis and more of an opportunity. Concepts such as reincarnation, karma, and bardo and practices such as meditation, tonglen, and phowa teach us how to face death constructively. As a result, life becomes much richer. Like Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, Sogyal Rinpoche opens the door to a full experience of death. It is up to the reader to walk through. --Brian Bruya

Book Description

In this major and comprehensive work, Buddhist meditation master and international speaker Sogyal Rinpoche brings together the ancient wisdom of Tibet with modern research on death and dying and the nature of the universe. With unprecedented scope, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying clarifies the majestic vision of life and death that underlies The Tibetan Book of the Dead. Sogyal Rinpoche presents simple yet powerful practices from the heart of the Tibetan tradition that anyone, whatever their religion or background, can do to transform their lives, prepare for death, and help the dying.

Rinpoche shows the hope there is in death: how we can go beyond denial and fear to discover what it is in us that survives death and is changeless. He presents a lucid, inspiring, and complete introduction to the practice of meditation, to karma and rebirth, and to the trials and rewards of the spiritual path. He gives advice on how to care for the dying with love and compassion and offer them spiritual assistance.

Rinpoche presents his own vision of the near-death experience from the Tibetan perspective. He explains in detail the "bardos," those states of consciousness after death that have fascinated and tantalized Western artists, psychologists, scientists, doctors, and philosophers ever since the publication of The Tibetan Book of the Dead in 1927.

The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying is not only a spiritual masterpiece but also a manual, a guide, a work of reference, and a source of sacred inspiration. It has been written to inspire all who read it to begin the journey to enlightenment and so become "servants of peace," working in the world with joy, wisdom, and compassion to take part in safeguarding the future of humanity.

5 out of 5 stars An extraordinary book........2007-10-04

"Just as if you put your finger into water, it will get wet, and if you put it into fire, it will burn, so if you invest your mind in the wisdom mind of the Buddha, it will transform into their wisdom nature."

Considered by many to be the most astute interpretation for Western culture of the Tibetan Book of the Dead and the Tibetan Book of the Living, this contemporary classic by Sogyal Rinpoche blends ancient ideas of Tibetan Buddhism with a fresh perspective from a master who has spent a good deal of time teaching and lecturing in the West.

It is most moving to read his prologue especially, in which he deals with the death of his master, for which he was present. The great spiritual process of learning to die, before dying, as the secret to life, is explored in this section. Much of what is now being reflected upon in the new spirituality of Echart Tolle and others is covered here with clarity and a certain depth not found in other western spiritual classics.

On a personal note, I revisited this book after dealing with a lost love and found it to be the pure water of the dharma that I needed in order to overcome the horrors of such a loss. I would encourage anyone to read this amazing book, but especially those who are in a place of pain, hopelessness, or suffering in this very moment. Strike while the iron is hot! The terrible, clear light of grief is in fact a step into profound self-awareness. It was an honor to read Rinpoche and to be touched by his sincerity and clear mastery of the practice.

5 out of 5 stars First most lifechanging book I've ever read.......2007-10-02

I reviewed the second most life changing book I've ever read, so I figured I should come back and review the first most life changing book I've ever read, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. After my husband died, I wanted to know what happened after you died. He was my one and only true love. When I read this book, I realized that Sogyal Rinpoche had some knowledge of what he was talking about, and this book had all the answers to the mystery of life and death for those with the wisdom to recognize it, and the determination to study and practice it. I read the book 3 times in a row right away right after I bought it.

A few years later after reading the book I joined Rigpa and took the classes they offered. After few years of practice, the cube farm way of life no longer made sense to me. So, much to the chagrin of all my relatives, I ditched my 6 figure Silicon Valley job to go work on a horse ranch by the beach!

Maybe the book should come with a warning label. Warning, this book could be hazardous to your income! Don't feel bad for me tho because I have a sweet IRA which I invest myself so I'm all set for retirement. You can feel jealous instead :-)

Actually, after some years of Buddhist practice, my clarity of mind has improved so I think if I ever had to go back to my old work, I would get all those enterprise-wide IT projects done better, faster, and everyone would have a lot more fun along the way.

5 out of 5 stars Understandable at Last.......2007-08-23

This book makes a complex Buddhist belief understandable for most. The author illustrates principals with examples from his own life. Interspersed with poetry and songs, it is an insightful study on a most important subject.

4 out of 5 stars Nice book.......2007-05-21

A well written book by an author who understands the Tibetan teachings of impermanence. This book is an easy read for the novice student of Budhism, but I wouldn't recommend picking it up as a complete beginner. The book is best suited for early students who are at the least familiar with Tibetan teachings and philosophies.

It is an excellent companion to the Tibetan Book of the dead as it will help clear up some of the things explained in that text in an easy to read and understand fashion. The author makes good use of personal stories, and conventional teachings, and helps to simplify a very demanding aspect of Buddhist study.

5 out of 5 stars the tibetan book of living and dying.......2007-05-14

I find it hard to fully express how important this book is.
The subject may seem morbid but the contra is true, like the bardol thodol it stands alone in spiritual writings.

Not a subject everyone is comfortable, in fact, a subject few are able to face but this book is the best on the topic. It has helped me through 3 terrible losses in my life.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Book.......2006-07-23

Stephen Levine is a master when it comes to simply describing mindfulness and conscious living. This book should be read by everyone who expects to die and who truly desires to live. The truth permeates the pages of this masterpiece. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Getting your heart open in the face of death.......2006-04-27

Steven Levine, formerly director of the Hanuman Foundation's Dying Project, and his wife, Ondrea Levine, have been counseling the dying for over 30 years. In this book they explore the question: "What is the difference when the dying person and those around him have their hearts wide open?"

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding reading !!!.......2005-11-18

Death is an uncomfortable and frightening topic to most people. Levine's book "Who Dies ?" will put an end to this fear and will help you confront death and make peace with it. Life and death are one. Fear of dying is only a reflection of the fear of living. Death is not some external Ogre that we must conquer and defeat. We must embrace death to enjoy and appreciate life. This book will guide you toward this gentle and final embrace.
"Who dies?" is poetic, eloquent, soothing, and reassuring.
This book is a must read for anyone that struggles with matters of life and death!! It is worth every penny...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - shows the dynamics of suffering .......2004-10-04

One of the best books I've encountered on the way the mind works and common dynamics that are the foundation of suffering (as well as the common way out of the suffering). The references to spiritual traditions show how various traditions have realized the same, fundamental problem and its common solution. I found this book to be one of the best and insightful explanations of the mind's dynamics - an understanding, when combined with the activities of awareness and investigation - yield to direct experiences that resolve suffering. On another level, I found that the author's hints of the experience of the fundamental nature of being to be very motivational.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good, practical advice.......2007-04-19

Good book....BUT, the authors both experienced the sudden and unexpected death of a loved one and almost seem to dismiss the death of a loved one from a terminal illness. My mother was diagnosed with a terminal illness just days after she retired and passed away less than 5 months later. This was no less shocking to our family than if she had stepped off a sidewalk and was struck by a bus and killed. Grief is grief and KNOWING that your loved one is going to die from an illness does not change the process. You still ask why, you still feel guilty about all the things you did not or could not do to help them and you still feel hopeless and angry. The notion that my process of grieving would be any different from someone who had lost their loved one suddenly and accidentally is simply not reasonable. Having said that, I did gain some useful, practical ideas from this book and would recommend it to anyone experiencing grief, regardless of the events leading up to the death of their loved one.

5 out of 5 stars A plain-terms guide to coping with an often harsh reality.......2004-11-05

Living With Grief: A Guide for Your First Year of Grieving is a brief yet compassionate book written by expert authors who have dedicated their lives to working with people who have survived great loss. Simple tips and advice for dealing with difficult times and seemingly overpowering emotions reverberate with timeless wisdom - don't worry about contacting people, expect to be distracted, understand that grief has no schedule, counsel on how to deal with troublesome dreams, what to do when faith is shattered, and more. A plain-terms guide to coping with an often harsh reality, highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Caring and Comfort during the first year of grieving.......2004-02-24

Brook Noel and Pamela Blair have put together a straight forward guide for anyone who is suffering the loss of a loved one. At a time when we are so lost it is comforting to have a book like this one to turn to. Thank you both for your insight into this painful subject, that sooner or later affects us all.
I have already given this book to two of my friends that are facing their first year of loss, one her mother and the second a man who has lost his son.

    Book Description

"Everyone dies, but no one is dead," goes the Tibetan saying. It is with these words that Advice on Dying takes flight. Using a seventeenth-century poem written by a prominent scholar-practitioner, His Holiness the Dalai Lama draws from a wide range of traditions and beliefs to explore the stages we all go through when we die, which are the very same stages we experience in life when we go to sleep, faint, or reach orgasm (Shakespeare's "little death").

The stages are described so vividly that we can imagine the process of traveling deeper into the mind, on the ultimate journey of transformation. In this way, His Holiness shows us how to prepare for that time and, in doing so, how to enrich our time on earth, die without fear or upset, and influence the stage between this life and the next so that we may gain the best possible incarnation. As always, the ultimate goal is to advance along the path to enlightenment. Advice on Dying is an essential tool for attaining that eternal bliss.

Living With Loss was given to me after I lost my husband to cancer. I passed it on to another and have since purchased many more to give to others. A comforting companion as widows live through the first 365 days following the loss of their spouse. This book reflected the same feelings that I was experiencing. The words supported my thoughts and helped me travel through the valley of loneliness and grief. A gift that should be given to any woman faced with the overwhelming burden of loss.

When my mother was widowed in her 40's, this book was a godsend for her. I in turn purchased it for a friend of mine, recently widowed in her 40's as well. She said it was the best gift she received and it helped her immensely during the grieving process. I now want to purchase it for another widowed friend and am dismayed to hear it is not in print. I am hopeful it will continue to be printed as its format and easy, brief daily insights, make it comfortable and manageable to read one thought a day to get through the initial shock of being alone.

5 out of 5 stars The best book to help explain mom's cancer to a toddler.......2005-11-20

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer last June, my biggest concerns revolved around telling my two year old about what was happening. Sammy's Mommy Has Cancer turned out to be the perfect tool for helping a toddler to understand, and for offering a great place to start. When we first told our daughter that I had cancer, we said, "We have a book about a little boy whose mommy has cancer. Would you like to read it?" and she said "Yes." Our daughter barely moved as we read it through to her, and then she said, "Read it again," to us several times as she used it to process information. The book has a positive tone and offers lots of optimism, even as it explores difficult topics such as surgery, fatigue, chemotherapy, and hair loss. Over the course of a few months, our daughter has pulled the book out again and again as we've faced different aspects of cancer together; for example, before I went to chemotherapy she spent a long time looking at the page with pictures of Sammy's mommy in the chemo chair, asking questions about the medicine in the bag. In short, this book has been incredibly helpful to us, and it's been instrumental in helping our young daughter to understand what is happening with her mom. (Like Sammy's mommy, I intend on a full recovery!) I think this book is an absolute necessity for any parent who has been diagnosed with cancer and needs to explain it to a very young child.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT book for a young child who has a mom with cancer.......2004-11-29

This was my favorite of the first 3 books I got for my 6 year old daughter when her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. (It is appropriate for young toddlers all the way through very early elementary school aged kids.) It VERY BASICALLY shows what happens when a little boy and his parents find out his mom has cancer. Easy to read and easy to understand. Wonderful for a child who doesn't know what cancer is, nor what to expect. My daughter really identifiies with Sammy. I would recommend this to anyone who has cancer and a young child.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful for kids.......2002-11-18

I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and was trying to find an easy way to explain what was going on to my 2 and 5 year old sons. This book was a great help. It explained the entire process in easy to understand language and opened the doors for great discussions from my 5 year old. I would highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars A gentle story for the youngest children........2001-08-20

This is the book I want for my best friend, a young mother with breast cancer. Kohlenberg wrote the book for her 18-month- old son, and the book is appropriate as a bedtime story for toddler/pre-school ages, or as an early reader for elementary ages. It clearly and hopefully takes Mommy, Daddy, and Sammy through Mommy's cancer diagnosis, chemotherapy including hair loss, surgery, and finally a day when Mommy's doctors declare her free from cancer, for now. As useful as the text, are the glossary explaining at a child's level terms such as cancer, cells, and radiation, and the names and addresses of several cancer foundations for more information. In a lovely personal introduction for the adult, Kohlberg includes tips for sharing the news with a teacher, and simple activities a child can use to show Mommy love and share special moments with her before, during, and after her treatment. Other books and a couple of videos are referenced for further reading. I love the straight-forward and hopeful style of Sammy but it would be appropriate to choose another book if a child needed specific preparation to deal with loss of a loved one, or if cancer treatment was declined.

5 out of 5 stars A top choice for public lending libraries........2007-05-17

THE ANGEL LETTERS - LESSONS THAT DYING CAN TEACH US ABOUT LIVING comes from a psychotherapist and counselor who works at a pediatric oncology unit in New York: he's had plenty of first-hand observations of the living and dying in the course of his fifteen years of duty and THE ANGEL LETTERS, based on his experiences, uses the form of letters addressed to nine different children whose last days and months he shared. Any interested in belief, acceptance, and working through illness will find THE ANGEL LETTERS an inspiration, making it a top choice for public lending libraries.

    5 out of 5 stars I loved this book!.......2007-02-09

I was privlidged enough to read this book already, and must say it is brilliantly written and very heart felt. The author while talking about a very scary and upsetting subject allows the reader to focus not on death, but on life. It forever memorializes people whose lives were cut too short, and the lessons they had to teach the world.

      Product Description

Profound loneliness and confusion often follow the death of a loved one. Author Andris A. Baltins unexpectedly lost Nancy his best friend, childhood sweetheart, wife, and the mother of their children to ovarian cancer. These letters to Nancy following her death share an intimate story of recovery from loss and the enduring presence of love. Baltins felt called to write the book as a necessary process of working through her death, and what he was to make of himself after she had gone. Many of the author s experiences particularly some of the rituals can be of benefit to others and his wish is to share them with a larger audience who find themselves in the unthinkable situation of having lost a life-partner or someone very close to them.
