A Must for professionals/Students in Crime Scene Tech!.......2004-01-02
I bought this book some time ago, and has been useful from the start. It does, indeed, give basic information on evidence recovery, Balistics, blood spatter, drowning, and other scenarios you may see. It is on a matter of fact based.
If you are looking for reasons why you are preforming these proceedures, I agree, this is not the book for you.
But if you are looking for do's and don't and want to see how to correctly regonize, secure and recover a crime scene then this is the book for you!
not for beginners.......2002-12-16
I guess I should have realised from the title that this book would not be for me. I don't have any background in this, I'm just a regular person studying for a bachelor's degree in Science and I wanted to get a book for interest on this topic. I would have greatly benefited from a sample of the pages inside and I could have seen the structure of it. The entire book is point form and quite bare (not of information, there's tonnes of that, but bare of anything to round it out). It literally is for people actually in the field and if you're not "in the field" then don't even bother getting this book. It is NOT for general interest sake. It is point form, some of the printing is fuzzy in a couple of places, there are only a handful of pencil sketches (that's all the illustration it has). But it does have step by step information of what to do if you're a cop (but I'm thinking if you were a cop, you really shouldn't have to stop to consult a book when you're at a crimescene). There it is, make what you will of this review and good luck.
Disappointing.......2002-11-02
Getting started in homicide investigation, and after reading the reviews here, it seemed this was the book for me. Unfortunately this book didn't help much at all. The entire book is in an outline format that just gives bullets on what to do and not to do. It doesn't explain the WHY of any of these things. Without the explainations behind the items, I did not learn anything from this book. I recommend you look elsewhere.
death Investigator's HandBook.......2002-05-07
This is the book! It cover's more then any other book I have read so far. I am retired Sgt. from the NYS Child Abuse Unit, and I have seen the worst of the worst out there, but I wish I had this book with me on every case I ever worked! The information stored in here and procedure's to follow and follow up make it worth reading this book cover to cover as many times as you can! Bravo Mr. Eliopulos, job well done!
Absolutely A Must Read.......1999-11-24
This is the most comprehensive book on field investigation I have ever seen. Covers death scene evidence gathering in a manner that insures every detail is observed and that a strong chain of evidence is developed (hope the LAPD has a bunch of these!). As a writer this one is now tops on my list for research involving murder, both for the intrepid police investigator and for the perp to get away with the crime. Excellent book - can't say much more than that.
Book Description
This practical "how-to" guide contains many of the checklists from Practical Homicide Investigation, Third Edition that lead you step-by-step through procedures, tactics, and forensic techniques used in sudden death and violent death investigations. Using these checklists will ensure that a proper and complete investigation is undertaken at the death scene. Many times, officers in the field come across evidence that they don't know how to collect properly. This versatile field guide contains an important appendix that provides collection of evidence procedures for field personnel, indicating specific types of evidence and how to collect it. With the help of this book, no matter when you come into an investigation you are on-line and ready to go. Indexed by type of crime for quick and easy reference, this guide is a must-have for anyone responding to a death investigation.

all in one.......2007-08-10
although the author has a fixation for weird sex deaths and spends more time then they are worth for an investigator in most areas, this is the best overall book i have seen for laying out a thorough investigation and peripheral issues. i wish more law enforcement officers used this book--rank, too--rank on a scene or in front of a camera can be like a bull in a china shop.
FORMER NYPD COP DOES GOOD........2007-03-15
Vernon brings many years of experience to us all in his book so that we do not make the mistakes others have made.
A Morbid Classic!.......2006-12-03
Talk about a disturbing book. This one will probably give you nightmares if you haven't desensitized yourself to violence yet. If your denial mechanism is in disrepair, you'd probably be best to avoid this book which is the "Bible" of crime scene investigation techniques. Extremely graphic photographs of murder and suicide victims along with a compelling forensic text with such chapters as 'The Homicide Crime Scene Search,' 'Estimating Time Of Death,' 'Modes Of Death,' 'Suicide Investigation,' and 'The Autopsy' makes this one of the most informative and disturbing books available. Highly Recommended!
practical, detailed and helpful.......2006-08-29
In this appropriately named "Checklist and Field Guide" Vernon J. Geberth distills the complexities of criminal investigation into a series of helpful checklists and charts. The reading is informative (though not always engaging) and he provides a necessary resource for law enforcement personnel as well as a helpful guide for authors writing books involving criminal investigation or police procedures.
Practical Homicide Investigation, Fourth Edition.......2006-07-06
Book Review: Practical Homicide Investigation, Fourth Edition
Author: Vernon J. Geberth, CRC Press, 2006
The latest edition of Practical Homicide Investigation, starts with reemphasizing the basics of homicide investigation, expands upon the coverage of practical methods of solving your murder cases and adds new information that addresses some of the newest, most crucial innovations of homicide investigation that will help us in our pursuit of justice for the victims and their surviving families. Even if you have memorized the first three editions, the 4th Edition of Practical Homicide Investigation needs to be on your "must read" list if you want to be an effective murder cop.
The textbook opens with the five components of practical homicide investigation and demonstrates the investigative strategies to be a successful homicide investigator. The addition of the color photographs to the 4th edition is a great compliment to the text, especially the coverage of wound structures and crime scenes. The images will help any investigator recognize and evaluate the potential significance of various wounds that you will encounter as a homicide investigator.
In this business, we all recognize the impact of DNA technology in our cases. The new chapter on DNA technology explains the science in a manner that murder cops can understand and utilize when evaluating homicides and the evidence associated with the cases. Being able to evaluate and understand the importance of this evolving forensic field can save you time as an investigator, prioritize the analysis requests for your forensic examiners to avoid delays due to examination requests backlogs and possibly save the lives of future potential victims as well.
The new chapter on equivocal death investigation is another worthwhile addition to the homicide investigator's bible. The fact that the deaths are equivocal means that the homicide investigator must use advanced tactics in reviewing the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The case studies in this chapter demonstrate the importance of evaluating all of the components of practical homicide investigation to ensure that wrongful deaths are not overlooked.
My favorite chapter in this latest edition of Practical Homicide Investigation is the chapter on Profiling and Investigative Assessment. The expanded coverage in this chapter reinforces the importance of behavioral evidence at the crime scene and how to utilize the collection of this "intangible" evidence in your overall homicide investigation.
The new Practical Homicide Investigation textbook could be called "4th Addition" rather than "4th Edition" as you will see when you read it. You will find newly added cases and updated information throughout the pages from cover to cover.
When you finish reading the last chapter of the 4th Edition and think that you have finished the textbook, you flip the page and find a newly revised glossary of the terms and definitions related to homicide investigations. This glossary is not only a great resource for your understanding of the terminology, but will enhance your ability to properly document your investigation in professional, well-written reports. Another important benefit of the glossary will be recognized after the arrest of the perpetrator(s) when it is your time to testify. You will be able to discuss your case in a manner that will demonstrate to the people in the judicial system, especially the jury, your dedication to your profession and to the victims of crimes. Reading and understanding this book will give you the confidence to ensure that homicide victims will get what they deserve - a thorough investigation by a professional, dedicated investigator.
I have been a PHI disciple for many years and as I read the 4th Edition text, I could hear the words of Vernon Geberth, "Follow every lead to its ultimate conclusion." - "All murder cops are cold case detectives." - "Remember, do it right the first time. You only get one chance." These directives will act as cues to keep you focused as you investigate any death cases.
All of the great additions to the 4th Edition of Practical Homicide Investigation lead to the most remarkable point of all which is that Lt. Commander Geberth took the time to improve his book for us. It demonstrates his perpetual passion for the profession of homicide investigation and is why he is known internationally as "Mr. Murder." Even though the author's name is followed by the word "retired" in parenthesis, the truth is that Vernon Geberth may have retired from NYPD, but he has never retired from the business of being a murder cop. The fact that he continues to revise the Practical Homicide Investigation textbook is a testament to his dedication to solving homicides and an example that all of us in the business should strive to achieve.

Full of good advice.......2006-12-20
I found the book to be packed with invaluable advice. I've only been a cop for about 6 months now, but I wish I had read the book before I became a cop.
The book offers great advice on choosing a department. It also has inspired me to write more reports and write them better.
One of the main points I took from the book was to never sacrafice your integrity.
I didn't like how the auther put a little introductory phrase before almost every single paragraph in the book. If he didn't do that, the book would probably only be 60 pages long.
a must read for thoughtful young people entering police work.......2006-06-27
Barry Baker was a street cop for 20 years in a very tough town before taking promotion. He accurately reflects the central role of patrol - street work - and does not sugar-coat or avoid difficult issues. The conciseness of the book is a strength. His advice to young people is genuine and not idealistic or poorly informed. A nice job.

Excellent Source of Information.......2006-08-20
I purchased the book on the grounds that I needed information about the hiring process and the steps it takes to gain employment with the FBI. In my opinion there should not be any prep books or material for the job, either you have what it takes to make it or you don't. This book gave me what I needed to know so that I was informed about how hiring decisions were made and what steps the agency takes in selecting candidates. I wish all who purchase this book the best of luck and to just remember that you have to live up to a lot to be part of the FBI.
Great reference, but in need of a revision.......2006-05-30
This book is a wonderful backgrounder on the FBI, its history, and how things work within the agency. The list of field offices and the areas they cover was alone worth the cost of the book. The interview hints were sparce, but very applicable. The problem is the application process has changed in some pretty dramatic ways since this book was published. The FBI now uses on-line applications and the application form has been changed. The needs and focus of the Bureau have also changed since 9/11
Yes, this book was helpful. But if you are interested in applying to the FBI, contact the Applicant Coordinator in your local field office and search the web for a law enforcement employment message board to get the latest news in the world of FBI hiring.
Great book.......2005-10-25
Great author, too. I had him as a Criminal Justice professor at Grand Valley State University. He was an adjunct professor there for a couple of years. Very nice, very knowledgeable. This book is a good reference and starting point. Sure, most of the information is available on the Internet, but why go through all the trouble of finding it when it can all be at your fingertips?
Not much info here........2005-09-15
I thought that this would be a good book to help me prepare for the phase 1 testing and what else is to come. Most of the recomendations are just common sense and all of the information was redily available on the internet for free.
FBI Minature Golf.......2005-08-31
We Hope in a future edition, that the author does not forget the path John Douglas (Ret.FBI: BSU) followed to finally arrive at Quantico. Miniture Golf Instructor. Yes now it can be told! Johns career all started at the end; if you will. Yep! at the end of McChord Air Force Base in Parkland Washington. At the venerable "Parkland Mini Putt" miniture golf course. I'll save the details for John himself to fill in, as he's kinda shy about his handicap.

Book Description
Mass Fatality and Casualty Incidents: A Field Guide presents in checklist form the recommended responses to events that result in mass fatalities, such as the Oklahoma City bombing, the crash of a jet airliner, or the attack on the World Trade Center. All cities in the United States will have to have a mass fatality disaster plan in effect by the end of 1999. Mr. Jensen is a leading authority in this area and provides training for police, fire and hospital personnel (including EMTs and social workers), local, state, federal and international emergency planners and responders. This book details actions that are part of a mass fatality incident response. Specifically, they are the actions that begin once life and property preservation ceases and continues through to the release of the deceased. Thus, primary focus is on search, recovery, medicolegal investigation, personal effects operations, family assistance operations, and media operations. Ancillary steps include logistics support, security, responder protection, attitudes and coping with mass death.

This book includes some of the best information on choosing a career in law enforcement that I've ever seen. John Douglas knows what he is talking about and has done a great deal of research to supplement his vast knowledge of law enforcement. It's easy for anyone to understand and is a quick read. Book Description
The Thirtymile fire in the remote North Cascade range near the Canadian border in Washington began as a simple mop-up operation. In a few hours, a series of catastrophic errors led to the entrapment and deaths of four members of the fire crewtwo teen-age girls and two young men. Each had brought order and meaning to their lives by joining the fire world. Then the very flames they pursued turned on them, extinguishing their lives. When the victims were blamed for their own deaths, the charge brought a storm of controversy that undermined the firefighting community. Continuing a tradition established in his previous books, and by his father Normans Young Men and Fire, John N. Maclean serves as an unflinching guide to the rogue fires unexpected violencewhich is almost matched by the passions released by the official verdict of the blaze. Weaving together the astonishing stories told by the witnesses, the victims family members, and the official reports, Maclean produces a dramatic narrative of a catastrophe that has changed the way fire is fought. More than anything, it is a story of humanity at risk when wildfire, ancient and unpredictable, breaks loose.

The Thirty Mile Fire.......2007-09-26
I have enjoyed all the MacClean books. They are well written and pay attention to detail without losing the interest of non fire folks. The latest book is methodical in its countdown to this disaster and accurately identifies all the seemingly innocuous events that added up to the catastrophic ending. I too am a fire investigator but I did have some difficulty understanding his description of the landscape and topographical features thought to contribute to the blowup phenomenon. A few more drawings and/or photographs would have been beneficial. All in all I enjoyed the book and believe he did a wonderful job memorializing the firefighters who lost their lives.
Great insight.......2007-07-14
Being a firefighter for 5 years now and a self proclaimed student of fire, this book puts so many aspects of the job into perspective. A very emotional book at times that makes one realize how many time a firefighter is so close to the same situation but for whatever reasons things turned out alright instead of taking the tragic turn this fire did. Many times while reading this book, filled with emotions I had to stop and reflect on how many times my brothers, sisters and I could have had the same outcome. As hard as it is to portray a firefighters life to civilians and those in the outside world, this book does a pretty good job of doing so. I hope that anyone that reads this book realizes the stress and pains firefighters have to go thru just to do the job we love.
John Maclean Matures............2007-07-12
John's fire knowledge has favorably increased since "Fire on the Mountain". I think the subtitle "A chronical of bravery and betrayal" is hokey, he needs to lose the Hollywood drama. But, a riveting book for wildland firefighters.
REQUIRED READING FOR FIREFIGHTERS.......2007-06-30
John Maclean, author of two previous award-winning books on disastrous wildfires, has written a third -- this one chronicling the Thirtymile Fire that killed four firefighters in 2001 in the Chewuch River canyon in northeast Washington.
The fire, which initially appeared to be a quick suppression effort with a bit of mop-up, spiraled out of control into a disaster fire that burned over 9,000 acres. Four young firefighters were killed, several others were injured, and one survived severe burns. A fatal fire that brought change to the firefighting world -- like the South Canyon Fire before it -- the Thirtymile will remain an historic marker for decades to come because of its aftermath. The official investigations that followed the fire were even more controversial than those that followed the 1994 South Canyon Fire in Colorado. One Thirtymile investigation concluded with the filing of federal charges against Ellreese Daniels, the incident commander on the fire. He was indicted on four felony counts of involuntary manslaughter and seven counts of lying to investigators.
This book profiles the firefighters on the fire and details the events and issues that combined for the perfect set-up for a perfectly disastrous fire. Maclean walks readers through the early stages of the fire, documenting the little mistakes and the big unknowns that all came together on a hot July afternoon -- exactly seven years after the South Canyon Fire killed 14 firefighters.
Maclean divides the story into three parts, starting with detailed portrayals of the firefighters and other people involved in the fire. He offers just enough background information for readers to comprehend the human factors aspects that contributed to the set-up for a disastrous fire. The book's second section details the initial attack on the fire, cataloguing a long list of little mistakes and big bad luck. Finally, the third section brings it all together - with an almost eerie conclusion.
Most wildland firefighters and fire managers have read Maclean's first two books, Fire On The Mountain and Fire and Ashes. This third effort is his best yet, and will be required reading for those who study wildland fire safety. The book will be a hot topic on online wildfire forums, and there'll doubtless be at least one copy in every crew buggy in the country.
firewife.......2007-06-15
Maclean did an excellent job of portraying the events that unfolded during that fateful day, and that was no easy task, given the confusion and miscommunications that transpired. At times I felt as though I was right there. Parts of the book brought me to tears, while others parts made me so angry at the bureaucratic mess, backtracking and second-guessing. This book is a MUST read for anyone in fire, it can happen to you! I have a personal interest in the book, my husband and son both are wildland firefighters. The legal ramifications, yet to come, are being closely watched, for they will determine the future path of fire fighting

A Fantastic Book!!.......2002-04-07
I've heard Bruce Middleton speak at international security conferences before and followed some of the articles he has written in the past on information security so when I noticed that he had written a book on investigating computer security incidents (CyberForensics), I knew it would be a great book to have. I was not disappointed. This is definitely a book for professionals in this field (like he says...it's a field book...something you take to the field with you for reference). Someone new to the field would also get alot out of the book if they have access to the professional level software he uses throughout the book (outstanding software from Guidance Software [EnCase], NTI [their computer forensics tool suite] and AccessData [their FTK = Forensics ToolKit] ). Even if you don't have the software currently and you want to break into this field, it's a great book to buy due to the fact that he goes into detail explaing various process, procedures, methodologies, etc that firmly relate to solving computer related crimes. I also understand that he is holding hands-on training classes with this software and using this book as the foundation. Bottom line...this book is an excellent "must have" for a CyberForensics professional working in the field and a great read for those wishing to break into this field.
Author should be a Tech Rep.......2002-03-27
I've definately read better computer forensics books. 90% of the applications that the author recommends and describes how to use are not downloadable and cannot be purchased in a software store! All the links point to a 'contact a sales agent today!' This makes me ask, "Is Bruce a paid spokesperson for Forensics-Intl.com"
Additionally the author goes from very basic information to very complex information, leaving out very important middle information. I've been working with computers for more than 17 years and if I found this book to be somewhat cryptic, a newbie isn't going to understand any of the critical information that he/she should know before attempting to perform any kind of computer forensics.
Cyber Crime Investigator's Field Guide.......2002-02-08
I found this book to be fantastic. Whether you are an experienced investigator of computer network security incidents (as I am for government/military/commercial organizations) or a neophyte just getting into the field of computer forensics, this book takes you through everything you need to know. The chapter on how the author handles an investigation in detail from start to finish is great. I'm applying what I learned there already. The coverage of forensic tools such as EnCase and tools from NTI is great. He gives me step by step information on how to use these tools, which I really need because you can't remember everything to do with all the tools I am involved with. The various reference sections on web sites, tool sites, attack signatures, etc. has been extremly useful for me and various organizations I work with. It's great to have the DOJ Search & Seizure Guidelines in the book. Sure, I can go out to the DOJ website and after some searching find them, but it is difficult to work through all the various links, I can't take notes there, make underlines, etc. It's really nice to have these and other guidelines in a handy written reference. This is one book that goes with me and my team members whenever we leave for a client site. It has just about everything we need for reference purposes. The author calls it a field guide and that is just what it is. I highly recommend this book. Very practical. I just hope the author is going to write another book...no doubt we will pick it up.
A few good chapters.......2002-01-30
I was disappointed with the Cyber Crime Investigator's Field Guide. Half of the book (Appendix G) is simply a printout of the US Department of Justice Search and Seizure Guidelines. Although the guidelines are required reading, one should not have to pay for information that is available for free on the Department of Justice Web site. Chapter 6 of the book is a series of questions and answers on various subjects. The questions and answers are valuable, but the overly brief answers do not provide readers with the rationale behind the answers.
The book is not without merit, though; Chapter 9, "Case Study," describes the general course of action a forensic examiner should take when involved in a computer investigation. The author details what he does in the course of a general forensic investigation -- from the time he gets the call, to his ride from the airport to the client site, to the on-site pre-briefing, and beyond.
