concise review book. good for brushing up on topics. great way to start off your study for USMLE step 1. also includes some study tips.
simply a list for USMLE.......2007-08-22
I must have unrealistic expectation for this book, because everyone has gushed about how great first aid is for step1. Well, I got the book and studied, I took my exam, and in retrospect, I can say that while the book gets good marks for putting together the minimum you have to know, it's simply not a definitive source. For one, usmle seems to move increasingly toward testing fundamental concepts in unusual ways, and this book is simply not good for concept. It's basically a list of things you have to memorize for the straight up memory questions. And even for the latter, so many of the mnemonics are so random that chances are you'll remember the mnemonic but not what they stand for.
Anyways, I'll still say take this book, make sure you cover everything the book listed, use this simply as a checklist. It's not the bible for usmle or anything like that - just that I dont know anywhere else that condense the facts into so few pages.
And make sure to get the list of mistakes - there are always new ones in every edition for some reason.
medicine .......2007-08-13

Customer Reviews:
Every medical student should get this book........2007-09-14
All major topics covered by the usmle step 1 are concisely and intelligently covered in this book. The figures are amazing and integrate concepts so that you are sure to get the big picture and the most important points from each chapter. I use this as my main textbook for my medical biochemistry course. After I get the concepts covered in this book, filling in the details from lectures or my required textbook, (Textbook of Biochemistry With Clinical Correlations, is easy. I am sure that it will make studying for step 1 easier too since, with the aid of this book, I have been able to focus on the big picture from day 1. Also, if there is no preview here on amazon, I think the book's website has sample chapters. [...].
Great reference!.......2007-09-13
This is an excellent resource for decoding those lectures delivered in a less than linear fashion. Well organized, excellent illustrations (cartoons) explain most concepts. Will save your hours of banging your head against the wall. It is saving my happy behind right now! Would not recommend for board review - too comprehensive - but do NOT go through biochem without this translator.
read for boards.......2007-05-25
i read this for the boards(step1). It is readable with nice tables and diagrams that compliment it. you may not have time to read it, but if you have time, pls read this book for step 1. You should also read it during course work, then when the step 1 comes along it should be easier to read. i wish i read it during course work, but i read it for my step 1 and i made a 229/95
The Newest and Best Edition.......2007-02-28
I have used all three of the editions of thisbook in my classes. By far the best review text, the addition of color illustrations adds greatly to the conciseness of the text. Color certainly helps me remember things a bit better, as I have a visual memory. A good study aid and USMLE prep book.
must have.......2007-02-01
if you take biochem, gotta have this book. by the way, biochem blows.

First Aid Q & A.......2007-05-13
Item was received promptly. No damage noted. Excellent service is appreciated.
First Aid for USMLE-Q&A.......2007-05-08
This is a great resource for boards prep. It breaks down questions by organ system, has a large "practice test", and has some basic science sections too. Its nice because you can review a specific organ system or area and then quiz yourself with questions directed toward that specific area too.
Excellent question book.......2007-03-03
I am an attorney and used to studying for exams with a large number of questions from which to prepare. Until First Aid Q&A came out, there were not many sources with 1000+ questions and that covered multiple subjects. All and all an excellent question book that I have used for my in class exams and which I intend to use for Step 1.
NIce!!!.......2007-01-15
Questions are just like the NBME Comprehensive exam!!! Nice guys, wow, really like this!!!
Excellent work........2007-01-12
This is a very comprehensive review of Step 1 USMLE First Aid. Having read many of the other works on this subject, I can honestly say that this is the best one. The sections on pharmacology and epidemiology/biostatics are especially enlightening. Michael Rinke is a god among men. First aid pathology, likewise, becomes a piece of cake after practicing on the 1000+ questions contained within.

good for step 1 prep.......2007-02-12
This is not bad as another book to have for Step1 Prep. Don't overwhelm yourself with too many books because there are ALOT of books out there. Just pick a handful becuase otherwise you will have conflicting information.
Just Get the BOOK!!! Yes That Good.......2007-01-15
Just Get the BOOK!!! Yes That Good!!! It helps you think about every aspect of a concept. Example, path & Physio of what's going on with the patient. It brings important concepts in medicine in extremely valid cases which are written "like" the NBME questions. I would rec this book 100% worth every penny!!!
great book.......2006-10-29
cases are informational and board style. follows the step 1 book. the step one book, cuts out the [...] and tells you what's needed for the boards. great outline. some of the topics are a little thin. has color histo atlas and websites for more general info. I think the book would be better if it had more cases but overall, the combo is a good buy!
First Aud Cases for the USMLE Step 1.......2006-09-02
It's the best way to buy a book,Thank you so much.

The best!.......2007-05-06
One of the most important books to prepare USMLE step 1, to start a month before the examination.
wise resource.......2007-04-12
this book is such a good resource for quick review . it deliberately gathers all the you-need-to-know questions in one place despite a few questions in each chapter .if you want a good ,brief and hit-to-the-point compilation of questions ,do not hesitate to choose this one
USMLE Step 1 Qbook (Kaplan USMLE Qbook).......2007-01-19
Excellent choice if you want to get in shape for USMLE Step 1.It was very useful for me to review Kaplan lecture notes and answer questions from the book at the same time.Qbook helps to put the knowledge from lecture notes into proper places. Also it is not enough to be ready for the exam, but it is good starting point anyway.
good book, good deal.......2007-01-09
much more affordable than q-bank questions online ... very worthwhile book for a good price
Save some money, buy previous editions!.......2006-12-29
I compared page for page 2006 and 2004 editions of Kaplan Medical USMLE Step 1 Qbook and was really surprised: Kaplan didn't change a single word in QBook over past 4 years. Well, I have to be completely honest: they changed 2004 for 2006 in most instances. I owned both and regret I bought latest edition myself. There were only few minute changes since 2002 and none of them affected answers (few question stems were re-written in 2004). So, if you're really want to waste your money, buy latest edition of Kaplan books.

Customer Reviews:
Kaplan Q bank+ this book =all you need to pass and do well.......2007-07-19
I think the key to studying for the Step 1 is to restrict your studying materials. It's better to know everything in one book (THIS BOOK) than some of 5-6 books. So many questions from my USMLE came straight from this book that if you studied this and memorized every syllable, you will pass and pass well! Just supplement this with the Q bank to get yourself into question mode and you will be just fine.
This was pretty much all I used and I made a 225/94.
the king of kings.......2007-05-25
you need this book starting from your first year of medical school, through wehn you take your step 1. use this book by its guidelines and you will be rewarded. pick it up, open it and read the first feww pages and follow what advice they give as a beginning medical student.also make sure you pick up the latest version.I used this book through my 2 years in college and i made 229/95 on my step 1.
Great book for review.......2007-03-21
It is a good book for review but the subjects change one to another to fast and dont have any link between the subjects. You will need comprehensive books if you dont know a lot about the subjects. Good for highlight the most important topics for the test.
Step 1.......2007-02-01
No magic, just study, I did it with KAPLAN, and the last week before the exam I just read this.
Helpfull.
Good for more than just the boards.......2007-01-10
First Aid has helped me in tests throughout the year. I actually wish I had had it last year, so that when the time comes to study for the boards, I'd be extremely familiar with the book. That said, the book is systems based, and the curriculum at my school is subject-based, so I'm considering getting an older edition of the First Aid for the biochemistry, anatomy, embryology, and histology sections. The mnemonics are great, and since I'm a visual learner, I really like the diagrams and pictures, especially for neuropathology.
I'm really glad I bought it early in the year. Don't put off buying this book simply because Step 1 is eight months away, it's value goes beyond USMLE.
Average customer rating:
- Great with First Aid
- Step Up
- A little bland
- comparable to first-aid
- Lots of High yield info

Book Description
Now in its Third Edition, Step-Up is the most comprehensive systems-based review for the USMLE Step 1. The book has been widely acclaimed for its systems-based organization, which parallels the USMLE Step 1 content outline and helps students synthesize the information from their basic science courses. The popular, user-friendly format features numerous charts and diagrams and Quick Hits notes in the margins that help students integrate concepts across systems. For this edition, the author has added numerous clinical vignettes and new mnemonics to each chapter. Pharmacology has been further integrated into the systems-based format with new illustrations, tables, and references.
Customer Reviews:
Great with First Aid.......2007-03-26
This is a great supplement to FA. The Neuro section is particularly useful as it goes through concepts more in depth than does FA.
Step Up.......2007-02-08
This book is a perfect brief systems review for the visual learner. It hits the high points and has more tables that make comparing disorders easier than in the First Aid. It has great diagrams as well and isn't as all over the place as First Aid. But, it does lack some of the information in the First Aid, but you can add that stuff in anyway or get it fom Goljan...
A little bland.......2007-01-09
This is an adequate review book for students already familiar with basic concepts. However, I found that it lacked the high-yield hits or points of emphasis that would help one remember the most important aspects of a given subject. I suggest reading this book after First Aid.
comparable to first-aid.......2006-03-22
I haven't taken Step I yet, but so far I have been using it along with my classes on system. It is very helpful. I love the charts!
Lots of High yield info.......2005-08-27
This book has a lot of useful info, probably more than 1st Aid, and the outline format organization is great to follow. So I think its best to either go with this book or 1st Aid. I recommend 1st Aid. It worked for me.

Review for USMLE and Med School Exams!.......2006-12-15
This book is chock full of great 'pearls'. Written by medical school students, it explains concisely what you absolutely need to know. Broken down by subject, it allows you to review areas of weakness. Absolutely the best guide I've found so far!
Not deep, but a great supplement.......2006-05-15
This book's style is more fun than say FirstAid and much needed break at times from the more focused BRS books. It doesn't go very deep, but covers more of the high yield information in a style most of my classmates and I have found very readable cover-to-cover.
good explanations.......2006-03-08
If you need to understand concepts, get this book; if used after you exausted too many other sources, you may get little benefit from it. Still, it's a good book, you can use it to think "why" is that or that so and nothing is left unexplained.
This Book Brought Medicine Into Perspective.......2005-12-06
I was initially advised to get this book by a tutor. At first, I thought it was just going to be another review book with a lot of information. But to my suprise, the information is organized on a system basis which is exactly what's on the Step 1. I really think anyone preparing for Step 1 should get this book.

Customer Reviews:
Overrated but still worth buying.......2006-07-16
People often make the mistake of thinking that knowing this book forwards and backwards translates into a superior score. It probably doesn't. The pathology and physiology material in particular lacks both concepts and details that you will need for Step 1. Every edition of the book is laden with errors and should be used with caution. Finally the book is awkward to read and contains too many lists.
On the plus side, the pharmacology section is excellent. If you do not understand the figures you see, however, you should use another source to figure them out. My recommendation would be to use this book to wrap up your review after using other sources, to catch high yield information you may have previously missed. While the book does not come close to containing everything you need to know (except perhaps in pharm), it does a pretty good job of limiting itself to things that are likely to be on your test.
good enough.......2006-03-08
Good enough, but if you have already done kaplan and Goljan, you will find very little new things here. Still a fair review.
An excellent book for review AFTER studying everything else.......2006-01-25
This review would apply best to FMGs who have finished medical school rather than medical students who are taking their Step 1 at the end of their second year.
For the purposes of doing well on the USMLE step 1, this is a book that I would recommend reading only after one has studied the test material from other sources. In fact, this book contains a list of recommended review book for each particular subject which I also recommend following. I would not recommend using it as a primary source of knowledge acquisition for someone who has finished the basic science part of their medical education a number of years ago (as most FMGs would be). Instead, it is a really powerful, and essential, tool to consolidate that knowledge once it is acquired elsewhere. Spending a couple of months recovering the lost basic science knowledge is worthwhile before reviewing this book.
It is worth mentioning that I used this book for review while I was doing the Kaplan Qbank questions. Only within that context, did I come to agree with those reviewers who refer to this book as the USMLE holy grail.
Better dont trust this book .......2005-11-10
I heard some people saying that they were helped studying from this book but trust me, according to now a days exams this book hardly helps. You can read this once but dont hope that this will help much. No need to buy new edition, its just waste of money. Can get old edition from amazon or ebay...... good luck.
Great Review.......2005-09-30
It's great...I'm a second year and I have been using it to study as I go through classes (while making notes that are missing from the book). It's pretty well put together.
