Book Description

Health and Health Care 2010, Second Edition, offers well-researched coverage of health insurance, managed care, health care providers, the health workforce, medical technologies, information technologies, consumerism, public health services, mental health, child health, health of the elderly, chronic care, and health behaviors, and more. Each of the volume's topics starts with historical background leading into the contemporary setting and is followed with predicted short-term developments and forecasts reaching to the year 2010. Acknowledging the difficulty of long-term predictions, even by experts, the projections are cast as "stormy," "long and winding," or "sunny."

This text book is out of date even though it is a forecast up to 2010. The copywrite on it is 2000. Some of the issues the author presents are current for the year 2005 and this is already 2007.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference on the Evolving Health Care Landscape.......2006-03-13

Where is our nation's health-care system headed in the next decade? And how will we cope with the inevitable collision of rising costs, politics and human needs?

This excellent book is one of the best overviews I've read on the topic. First published in late 2001, it's now available in an updated 2nd edition. It was funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and compiled by the Institute for the Future. Even if you don't agree with all of the predictions, you will respect the honesty and thoroughness of the editors' work.

Unlike works of social criticism and political diatribe, this volume avoids most partisan positions in favor of evidence-based conclusions on the following main topics:

1. America's changing demographic structure (not just age, but also ethnicity, socio-economic status and other variables)
2. The changing role of hospitals and related health-care institutions
3. Political and economic pressures on rising health-care costs
4. The rise of tiered health-care and insurance changes
5. New directions for health-care technologies, such as targeted pharmaceuticals and imaging
6. Patterns in health-care employment and professional training

This well-written book is packed with valuable charts, graphs, source-notated facts and objective statistics from a wide variety of reliable sources. No matter what your position on each issue, you'll find this a volume a tremendous resource for analysis and discussion. Well done!

4 out of 5 stars Thoughts on Health and Health Care 2010.......2001-05-22

This is a very interesting prediction of what health care may hold for us this decade. I enjoyed reading forecasts of what the population will be like and their lifestyles, as well as buying habits. Health careers that will be booming were discussed as well as what medical advances will flourish. I found it interesting that this publication does not really predict a nursing shortage as everyone else is predicting. The discussion of insurance plan growth and changes was less interesting to this reader but necessary.

Mehmet Oz is a Renaissance man of cardiac care, combining yoga, aromatherapy, hypnosis, energy healing, music therapy, acupuncture, and visual imagery into his surgery practice at the Complementary Care Unit of New York City's Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. He's adamant that the relationship between traditional and alternative medicine should be symbiotic, not mutually exclusive. His patients are proof of this: when treated holistically, not as just "another transplant patient" with a plaque-addled heart, they perceive less pain during surgery and recuperation, are less likely to suffer depression, and heal more quickly.

While med school at the University of Pennsylvania didn't expose Oz to the holistic healing methods he employs today, his upbringing in Turkey and exposure to cultures worldwide did leave him open to new ideas. Oz helped develop the LVAD, or left ventricular assist device, which helps the heart of a patient awaiting a transplant keep pumping. Piqued when he was asked about his patients, "But has restoring their hearts restored their health?"--and he had to respond, "No"--Oz started incorporating one alternative method after another into his practice. He started with massage after seeing how it rejuvenated his wife after childbirth.

Healing from the Heart is not for the weak of stomach; Oz occasionally gets graphic, such as in the opening heart-transplant scene: "I finished closing the last tiny bleeder, then called for the electric saw, which was plugged in and handed to me by its metallic handle ... the saw cut through the bone like soft pine." If there's anything that might inspire you to pass up greasy French fries, this book is it. Current cardiac patients and their families will be enthralled by the tale of Oz's holistic revolution and his patient-success stories, and other health practitioners would do well to pay attention to what he advocates. --Erica Jorgensen

Book Description

"The medicine of the new millennium."--Larry Dossey, M.D., author of Healing Words

Dr. Mehmet Oz, celebrated heart surgeon and co-founder of the Complementary Care Center at New York's Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, is spearheading the health-care revolution that is yielding powerful new healing tools that will forever change the way we think of medicine. In this ground-breaking book, he describes his pioneering work--combining cutting-edge Western medicine with such Eastern techniques as acupuncture and chi-gong, as well as such controversial therapies as hypnosis, music, massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, and energy healing. The inspiring and affecting stories of his patients are the heart of this book--from the extraordinary discipline of Frank Torre, who used his professional sports training to "psych" himself into healing after heart transplant surgery, to the "impossible" recovery of blues great Johnny Copeland, who was roused from a seemingly impenetrable coma through the force of his own music. In recounting his patients' experiences, Dr. Oz forges a blueprint for the radical new medicine of the next millennium--drawing on the best from Eastern and Western therapies and empowering patients to become partners with doctors in promoting their own recovery.

4 out of 5 stars An unexpected side effect.......2007-02-16

I rate this book very highly with relation to what it teaches regarding cardial care.
What also struck me is a reference to what he experienced in Turkey, were Dr. Oz spent a vacation as a child or teenager. He refers to this somewhat timidly.
Can you imagine: there was no toilet paper. It was explained to him, that Turkish people, like Indonesians and other Asian people refrain from rubbing an obnoxious substance into a tender skin with paper, which Western people have been led to believe represents cleaning, but rather prefer using water and their left hand.
People that use their right hand's middle finger to signal derision, don't know what they are signaling about. Dr. Oz mentions, that the Eastern method of personal hygiene also diminishes the survival rate of hemorrhoids.
So it would seem that the book promotes health of heart as well as of another , but less admired, part of the human anatomy. A double whammy so to speak.

3 out of 5 stars Not yet Synergy.......2006-11-07

Dr. Oz is, I guess, trying to be a complementary surgeon, and he does okay in his explanations of the typical complements i.e. yoga, music, but he is still a surgeon, and his belief in surgery comes through loud and clear. Just as the "YOU" books are deceptive in their attempt to woo the reader into believing this is a new approach to medicine. Alternative therapies were mainstream medicine long before Oz decided to be a revolutionary. Hard to read a book based on false premises. I much prefer the truth, even it sounds to some as being "too loving." Read Rayna Gangi, Deepak Chopra- let these guys go be surgeons.

5 out of 5 stars Heart on Heart!!.......2006-11-04

Great information and easy read. I learned more in one book than the other 5 I read on the heart and the things we can do to help heal. As a yoga instructor I will recommend this to my ailling students.

3 out of 5 stars The Heart Can Thrive on Positive Thoughts........2006-06-19

Dr. Oz, the heart wizard, is of Turkish descent and attempts to combine East and West traditions of healing during post-surgery. He is a heart surgeon located in New York City. First of all, he is searching for the elusive one universal healing endeavor. Some things we all need are recommended such as Love is a major healing force, as is religious faith in one God. He is of the opinion that modern medicine is not perfect. Nothing is perfect, not even beauty, he says.

Music can be healing or it can turn destructive if your favorite network plays exactly what you dislike the most, as mine is currently doing, as an irritant. Believe me, I have the emails to prove it is done on purpose just to make me hurt. But I push a button until that awful stuff is over, so it really doesn't fulfill the purpose they intend. There are devils on earth.

Pets can be a reason to live. Some are actual life savers for their owners. The purpose of healing is to bring us in harmony with ourselves. Sounds like Depock Chopra.

Our minds and emotions affect our immune systems. Depression, loneliness, and stress (brains and bodies) can cause death. Emotions are not only in our heads but affect all of our body cells. All cells are geared to know what each is supposed to do, independent of messages from the brain.

He talked about the Greek myth of Psyche and Cupid, god of Love. She needed the knife so as to be armed to deal with consequences. Who knows when an ardent lover will turn violent.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Combination.......2006-02-23

The view that all types of medicine (western and eastern) working together makes sense. This book seems to encorage a balance between both. I enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read For Anyone Who Cares About This Planet.......2007-08-20

This book is both fantastic and worrisome in its import. Painstakingly documented, it sounds a warning call that must be heeded. As well-read as I consider myself to be, I was surprised at how much I didn't know about the extent to which we've ALREADY messed up this Earth, biologically. Knowing how seriously we've messed up other species, one wonders to what extent the lessons also pertain to us. That is: it makes you realize that a lot of what we see going on today might have been the results of the seeds we've been sowing. Very thought-proviking.

2 out of 5 stars Too Much Information!.......2007-06-24

Reading this book is like reading a scientific paper...boring! I think the idea of collaborating and telling a story could be a good idea, but this one doesn't work and is a real snooze-fest. There was too many incidents cited (yes, we get it, DDT is bad)that it took too long to get to the conclusions. It also didn't help that the type was fairly small and difficult to read.

This would be a good book if you wanted to write a term paper and needed a source for your topic and bibliography.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent "Things that make you go Hmmm...." book.......2007-05-02

While this is nearly 10 years old it shows that people had been connecting the dots (and vigorously denying) synthetic hormones (and other chemicals that mimic the effects of hormones) in the environment for more then 60 years. Now in 2007 this book is still a good read, if a little outdated. Currently the science has evolved FAR past "what if" to "what now?" When Native Innuit populations show traces of Teflon and flame-retardant chemicals in their blood and breast milk, one truly understands that the diaper this planet wears is forever and mommy isn't going to come change it any time soon.

Still, the pro-industry flunkies will cry and cry. "You'll ruin the economy!" they shout from the rooftops. Well my favorite part of this book so far is the allegory: "A robber sticks his gun in your ribs and says 'your money or your life' what do you choose? It doesn't matter if you're an investment banker, a soccer-mom or a homeless person, the choice is ALWAYS that no amount of money is worth your life; you can make more money later as long as you're still alive..."

4 stars instead of 5 for being 10 years old and not up with the more current research, but certainly a good place to start if you are interested in the subject.

4 out of 5 stars the problems with artificial hormones.......2006-11-15

In their book "Our Stolen Future," Colborn and his coauthors paint a devastating portrait of all the woes that can arise when chemicals that act like hormones are released into nature; animals become impotent, suffer other endocrine disruptions, get cancer, or give birth to offspring with birth defects. The devastation they describe is not much different from the devastation described in "Silent Spring," and give reason to reconsider how we treat the environment. Sometimes it would be better not to do something until we are sure that it is safe, rather than to do something until we are sure that it is not safe.

I was slightly surprised that the book goes into great depth about the havoc that artificial hormones can wreak when they are released into nature, but doesn't contemplate whether artificial hormones may have a downside when prescribed as medicines. Perhaps this will be the subject of another book.

5 out of 5 stars What, me worry? .......2006-06-21

Stolen future? What future? This excellent book documents the threat posed to human reproduction and fetal development by the synthetic chemicals first created in the '30s. Read this along with Christopher Bryson's "The Fluoride Deception," and you will agree with me: we are f***ed. But then, throw in a little eschatology from the Maya, the Buddhists, the Hopis, Edgar Cayce, Sir Isaac Newton, and the Book of Revelations (among others) and perhaps you will conclude with me: it really doesn't matter anyway. Why? Because we were already f***ed --- long before we started filling out bodies with toxic waste disguised as food and drink.

Dear Reader, if you pooh-pooh the notion that we have about 2,380 days left before the Big Finale (as of this writing), then take the message of this book to heart --- before it's too late.

Book Description

If you are serious about weight training, you have probably experienced the "plateau phenomenon." You train harder, you consume extra protein in your diet, but you just don't get the strength and power gains that you want. For the last ten years sports nutrition has focused on "what" to eat. The latest research from leading sports science labs now shows that "when" you eat may be even more important. Nutrient Timing adds the missing dimension to sports nutrition, the dimension of time. By timing specific nutritiion to your muscle's 24-hour growth cycle, you can activate your body's natural anabolic agents to increase muscle growth and gain greater muscle mass than you ever thought possible. Nutrient Timing is the biggest advance in sports nutrition in over a decade.

By apply the principles of the Nutrient Timing System, you'll be able to deliver the precise amounts of nutrients needed at precisely the right time to optimize your muscle-building agents and maximize muscle growth, while minimizing muscle damage and soreness after a hard workout. You'll even be less susceptible to colds. You can actually sculpt a better body with more lean muscle mass, less fat, and more power without changing your exercise program or even you total caloric intake. "Nutrient Timing" will show you how.

5 out of 5 stars For Anyone Who Wants to Gain Muscule and/or Loss Fat!.......2007-10-01

Just a few points to summarise:

* Great easy read - not too technical - easily absorbed.
* Contents based upon research findings over the last 30 years.
* Usefully for anyone who wants to know more about the when and why factors in relation to eating, etc.
* Learn how to get your body to do want you want it to do when building muscle or when loosing fat.

Lastly, I have read heaps on bodybuilding forums over the Internet, but the key knowledge contained in this book, hasn't hit the vast majority of people who frequent those forums yet. Money well spent!!!

A must for anyone who wants to build muscle bulk and/or lose fat more easily as part of their normal training program.

4 out of 5 stars Nutrient Timing-An invaluable concept.......2007-09-26

Based on solid, referenced research, the authors take you through the nutrient timing philosophy that can make serious improvements to an athletes performance and physic. This book is geared towards strength athletes but as a Triathlete who trains daily, the system is invaluable in assisting recovery and improvement. The book is easy to understand in the most part, and is detailed enough for the more enquiring who wish to have all the information before making an informed decision.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-26

This is the missing chapter to weight training and personal training certifications. this is a must have. this book will show you how to use your supplements and diet food correctly.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointed .......2007-09-14

This book was a big let down for me and it seem's to be out of date . The carbohydrate
to protein ratio per lb of bodyweight is just wrong !! It's far too low . All the information in this book can be found compacted down on the internet , it takes a couple of chapters for this book to explain the information I found in an internet article that prints out on two and a half sheets !!!
I wish that I could find something positive about this book but I cant, it's badly written and very repetitive If you want to spend money on information already on the internet fine (I do it my self) just find a better book than this , the bad, repetitive writing rely make it a chore to read.

2 out of 5 stars Comment on Jaundice and breastfeeding.......2007-02-02

HI, I was just browsing through this book online and I came across the paragraph on jaundice and breastfeeding. This information was supremely inaccurate on this particular subject. The book says that breastfeeding makes jaundice worse and that you will have to stop nursing for your child to be cured of it. I am a very well read La Leche league member and breastfeeding is well known to reverse jaundice by helping your baby to excrete the bilirubin build up. The more often you nurse the faster your baby gets rid of the dead red blood cells. It is the best treatment for jaundice despite was this book says. Stopping brestfeeding during the crucial first weeks is dangerous for your baby's nutrition and immunity and bad for mom in terms of losing your milk supply and suffering engorgement or mastitis. Other than that topic I didn't read the rest of the book so it may otherwise be a good book.

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS book..........2007-01-17

We love this book. Except for the oysters (my kids just don't get into the texture), we follow everything on this book and our kids are SO MUCH healthier than their friends. They eat better at home AND they make healthier choices when they go to parties/events, as they are not used to so much sugar! I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to help their kids improve their immunity through diet.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Moms.......2007-01-06

I found two things to be most helpful about this book: 1) the information on the essential fatty acids that young children need in their diets from flax oil, evening primrose, cod liver oil, etc, especially if they have allergies; and 2) the specific doses of certain vitamins and minerals for each age group.

My son's allergies to milk and wheat are gone, in part, I believe because I introduced flaxseed oil into his diet nine months ago as result of reading this book. Flaxseed oil, I found is the easiest to incorporate into a young child's diet because it's readily available at health food stores and it doesn't have any taste. I generously poured it onto my son's oatmeal every morning and it provided a good source of fat for him and, in my opinion, played a role in eliminating his allergies. Evening primrose and cod liver oils were a little tougher to be consistent with, but if your child has severe allergies, it's a small price to pay for the potential positive outcome.

As for vitamins and minerals, Dr. Galland has specific recommendations for safe upper dosing levels for different age groups. (Who knew that a 2-3 year old can have up to 1000mg/day of vitamin C as long as his tummy will tolerate it?)

I also found the chapter on nutrition for pregnant and nursing moms to be really helpful (for example, too much of the mineral manganese in the mother's diet can be toxic to a nursing infant up to six weeks of age).

The main concern for me, however, had to do with Dr. Galland's recommendation for so much soy in children's diets. There has recently been much controversy over the safety of soy for kids because of the high amounts of isoflavones or naturally occuring plant-based estrogen. Babies on soy formula have been observed as young as three years old to go into puberty, it is believed, due to the estrogen in soy. [...] So I wonder if Dr. Galland were to write an updated or revised version of this book, if he would still recommend so much soy for children.

At any rate, the book is a brilliant reference point for moms and it's easy to pick and choose what is doable and helpful for your child and lifestyle. I consider it a valuable and insightful must-read for every mom. Thanks, Dr. Galland, for sharing your expertise on child nutrition. It's so refreshing to hear from nutritionally oriented MDs who don't resort to medication for every problem.

5 out of 5 stars It's not that hard & a great book on eczema........2006-10-25

Why feed your kids something that actually depletes the nutrition you are trying so hard to give them [such as hydrogenated oils which prevent your child's body from absorbing other nutrients it needs]?

This book makes it clear what kid's need & what they don't need. I found the explanation of which vitamins/minerals can be too much - blocking absorption of other necessary nutrients - very helpful. Everyone I have turned on to the book has loved it!

Another thing I found helpful was the chapter on what to start feeding your 6 month - 1 yr. old. It lists what to start them on & what to hold off on & explains why. This is far more detailed than our pediatrician's information. The prenatal chapter is good as well & I wish I had this book when I was pregnant.

Especially easy & helpful is the information on which supplements are beneficail for your child's specific needs/problems like hyperactivey, yeast infections, eczema, cradle cap, fatigue, diabetes ect..

It's really not that hard. It's very basic nutritional information just well explained. It's really not difficult to feed your kids & yourself basic whole foods. Read the labels! You may quickly realize these are lifestyle changes that you want to make since it is so beneficial to your child's health & development of their brain, eyes, etc.

Great format & an easy read.
THIS IS THE BEST BOOK I HAVE FOUND ON ECZEMA FOR CHILDREN OR ADULTS.

I also recommend:
Chemical-Free Kids: How to Safeguard Your Child's Diet and Environment by Allan Magaziner, Linda Bonvie, and Anthony Zolezzi
This book better explains the importance of organic foods among other things.
Another great format & an easy read.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2005-10-19

I agree with one reviewer who said that it is difficult to pull off. But, I will still give this one 5 Stars. First I never knew how much important EFAs are and this book explains that well. Second it talks about tackling EFA and other mineral defficiencies for kids of various ages starting from Prenatal(pregnancy). I love the format in which this was written. Very easy to refer. My three and a half yr old is a very picky eater. I might not make her eat all the healthy stuff thats said in the book. But I started rubbing FLAX oil onto her skin, and her eczema is getting better.

The book also tells you about anti-nutrients. I now think a little before giving junk food to my kid. Recipes sound good but I never tried them yet. Hopefully I will get my kid to eat atleast a few of those. Highly recomment to parents who worry why your kid gets sick more often and suffers more than all the rest of the neighbourhood kids.

This report will show what is needed to foster sustainable cities on a planet where urban areas are home to half the human population and a far larger share of natural resource use.

Written in clear and concise language, with easy-to-read charts and tables, State of the World 2007 presents a view of our changing world that we, and our leaders, cannot afford to ignore.

Especially when the issues are surveyed in Worldwatch's annual review.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive and constructive look at the global urban environment.......2007-02-07

This year's "State of the World" by Worldwatch Institute focuses on the global urban environment: water and sanitation, transportation, agriculture and farming, energy, natural hazard risks, pulic health, economics, and environmental justice. Each chapter lays out trends and statistics demonstrating some of the hazards the world might be facing with the current trends towards urbanization.

However, the book has a largely positive and constructive tone, with extensive use of examples and case studies of locales using innovative methods for protecting the environment and even attempting to reducing pollutants that might be global in their impacts. Case studies span the world - from Los Angeles to Timbuktu. The "city" provides a structure for problem-solving.

The book overall is comprehensive, with excellent writing and editing - some chapters are replete with data while others are written in a sweeping "big picture" context with long-term recommendations for future directions. This is a great resource for researchers, policy-makers, students, and anyone interested in understanding the risks and opportunities for the urban landscape.

3 out of 5 stars Not great, not terrible.......2007-07-25

I just bought this book a few days ago because of the glowing reccomendation on the front cover by Joan Borysenko, and because it claims to contain "the world-famous technique that empowers you to forgive your past, heal your present and trasform your future." I have been on a healing path for 5 years and I've read many books---and there's nothing new contained in this book. It's a pretty typical primer for basic life healing. If you are brand new to any form of therapy, or self-help techniques you will probably find this book helpful, but if you are already on the path or you have particularly agressive ego defenses in place---this book will feel (and be, because I have already done everything the author suggests) simplistic.

For example, the author described a long-term smoker who wanted to quit, who had lots of reasons and was clear that he hated the habbit, but who just couldn't do it. The author suggested that everytime he had a cigarette, he sit and explore the circumstances that triggered his desire to smoke. After a few days the man realized he wanted to smoke whenever he felt nervous or socially uncomfortable. The smoker then decided to start throwing dinner parties to counter his social discomfort and as a result he soon quit smoking. Just like magic. Does that sound liek something that might help you? If so---this is your book.

The author basically lays out the process like this: Figure out what you want to chang in your life and what your personality defect are (he has a list to choose from if you're coming up short). Analyze where you got the problem to begin with (the book assets point blank, your parents) forgive your parents, forgive yourself, decide what you want for your future, visualize it, give back old habbits to the people who taught them to you via declaration that you don't want them anymore, and you will naturally change. There is nothing more than this.

The author writes, "when we are finally able to come to terms with blocked or unhealthy emotions and to replace them with loving acceptance, the healing process will have worked deep within us. We will be able to love and accept love, the untimate lesson of our lives." --Not what I would call a profound statement, but this is the depth of advice you should expect from reading this book. Lots of feel good, catchy little quotes from other authors (the author is not a therapist or guru) who seemed like their books would be better, and generic advice meant to cover a broad spectrum of issues, and to make you feel better about yourself. But transform your future? I don't know about that. But I do know that if I had not hi-lighted a few sentences in the begining of the book, before I realized it was not going to address my issue with any depth, I would have returned it for my $$ back.

5 out of 5 stars Trippy Read.......2006-11-11

Funny thing is it works. A few simple questions and BOOM! Clarity, honest to God!

5 out of 5 stars Life changing information.......2006-08-19

I recommend this book all to my clients and friends. It is a must read for parents who honestly want to be the best parent to their children and who really want to show up in this life as the best they can be. I always keep a few extra copies on hand to give away.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to FEEL different -then do the Process!.......2006-03-24

I did the Hoffman Process almost three years ago and have referred many people to it since then. I can, with an open heart, honestly say that doing the Process was the biggest gift I could have ever given myself, my parents and all the people I love. If you have a voice within that is searching for something and you just don't know what it is -then consider the Process. The only way I can describe it is as the imperative missing link to the million piece puzzle that made up me and my life. The Process is loving and very powerful and was the key to organic lasting change for me.

5 out of 5 stars Hoffman Process extracts the psychic scream/root of pain.......2005-01-16

Have you ever noticed that no matter how much you know ... it doesn't make a difference? Have you struggled with very long-standing childhood-based hurts that no amount of seminars, workshops, support groups, or counselling has been able to help resolve 100%?

If you find yourself on a seemingly endless search for healing without permanent measureable relief then the Hoffman Process may be for you. The Hoffman Process has been described as the world's best kept secret. Presented in an 8-day residential retreat around the world, the process has been endorsed and advocated by many medical doctors, psychologists, and others in the healing profession. Known for its breakthrough results and ability to gently "crack the hardest nut (no pun intended)", the Hoffman Process helps participants achieve a connection with self by releasing decades of hurt, anger, resentment, vindictiveness, and other destructive negative emotions and behaviors. People from all walks of life have benefited from this remarkable loving program.

I am a graduate of the Hoffman Process and truly believe this is the only method that fully releases people of the roots of pain, anger, and the torture of negativity. The beauty of the process is that it connects the head and the heart while removing destructive self-sabotage patterns that one has believed ingrained in themselves. Hoffman produces a powerful relief. It is not a cure-all, and one has to do the work to get the benefit, but nothing else I have tried has brought to me such a sweet place of serene tranquility and joy. For those of you who have tried all sorts of healing methods and still are plagued with inner struggle ... I highly urge you to consider the Hoffman Process. The Institute in the US offers scholarships and there are financing options in both Canada and the US. There is a fresh air of sincerity, open-hearted, and authentic realism in the Hoffman Institute staff and its teachers.

Unlike some programs of positive thinking or human potential peak performance, there is no hard sales tactics, no manipulation to take more courses, no fostering co-dependancy, no coercion in getting your friends to do courses, or any other uncomfortable tactics.

Hoffman is a a gentle, loving, cleansing, mind-body-soul techniques endorsed by some of the most prominant names in medicine and psychology today. There is a freedom of choice and a freedom to be, that in itself is a journey of gold!

This is a must read for those committed to self-growth and/or are Hoffman graduates.

Isn't it time to be free of unhealthy core issues rather than just successfully coping and palliating them?

You've got to hand it to the renowned celebrity psychic Sylvia Browne--she gives it straight from the gut and really doesn't give a hoot whether you believe her. As a result, it's hard to not be captivated and convinced by her firm belief in the afterlife, or in this case, the beforelife. Her writing is most riveting when she uses her storytelling voice, relating dialogue from client sessions that include past-life stories. In fact, she opens the book with a scene in which she follows the small clues offered by an agoraphobic to help him reveal that a past-life poisoning (when he was an Aztec ruler) had been crippling his present life. Throughout the book, Brown continues to use real-life client stories to show how past-life baggage can weigh down a present life. The final chapters offer how-to lessons on conducting your own past-life regression and healing sessions. Be warned: Browne's writing sometimes sounds like the channeled writing that was popular in the late 1980's: "The miraculous gift of eternity means that the singular essence that is you will always, always exist." But readers may forgive her these lapses, as she clearly writes from heartfelt convictions rather than a stylized formula. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

The one expert millions of readers have learned to trust, one of the few psychics instantly recognizable to television viewers, Sylvia Browne is back. She has proven herself, in her fifty years of working as a medium, to be the reigning queen of psychic phenomena. Here is an insightful look at how much of one's present life is informed by one's past lives, and how many health and relationship problems have their roots in unresolved past lives. From unexplained illnesses to bizarre phobias, from irrational anxieties and fears to the choice of partners, each can be traced back to past lives. Even birthmarks and recurring dreams are signs of issues from past lives. Sylvia helps readers recognize where their deep-rooted problems, fears, and hang-ups all began-and how to ultimately resolve them.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sylvia Browne.......2007-08-28

This was a great book. I have an 11 month old, so it was great being able to stop whenever I needed to. The stories were very interesting and I even started saying to my daughter everytime she fell asleep to release any negetive energy from past lives into the white light of the holy spirit. I highly recomend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Just love her!.......2007-07-19

Sylvia has once again published another helpful book. Rather than this book being alot of psychic talk, we have another "theme" going on here, which is "Tolerance". We are surrounded by so many different types of people who have many different themes in life. She goes in depth about the life purpose of these people, including yourself, and show us that we are all on a seperate journey to fullfill our themes. We are here for each other, and we were all ment to be around the people that we have, wether we like it or not. We are here for a specific reason, even the irritating ones... have some patience they are here to help too.

3 out of 5 stars interesting.......2007-03-27

As with all of Sylvia's books that I have read so far it kept me interested, opened my mind and made me ask questions. I feel that if anything I read makes me think then it must be good. I have made so many positive changes in my life and have found a peace I never knew existed since being touched by the works of Sylvia that it would be impossible to not see or to accept this fact.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent & Informative.......2007-02-12

I have enjoyed all of the books by Sylvia that I have read. This one in particular is not only fascinating but VERY helpful. All of us (because all of us have problems) should read it.

5 out of 5 stars REINCARNATION?? THIS WILL MAKE A BELIEVER OUT OF YOU..........2006-09-10

If you ever wondered about reincarnation, this book may make a believer out of you.

This book explores Sylvia's experiences as a degreed hypnotherapist who has come across many supposedly "unsolvable" cases where past life regression revealed the link to some of the baffling ills suffered by clients in this lifetime. There are many fascinating case studies, that have later been back researched and verified by historical census records and other historical public records.

Book Description

Just and Lasting Change presents how to transform communities rapidly and inlocally appropriate ways. Daniel Taylor-Ide and Carl Taylor have been present at key events and worked with key thinkers in dealing with the large forces of inequity, environmental change, and globalization. The approach they have synthesized builds on what has worked over the last century--and can now be implemented rapidly and cost-effectively in many parts of the world. It relies on a three-way partnership of "bottom-up" initiatives from the community level, "top-down" support from government agencies, and "outside-in" ingenuity and objectivity from experts. Based on both a diverse range of case studies--from the earliest attempts to promote social development in India a century ago to current efforts in Tibet, the Peruvian Andes, China, and the American Southwest--and engaging personal experiences, this book describes, step-by-step, how SEED-SCALE can be effectively implemented.

With contributions from leading international experts in community-based development and public health, Just and Lasting Change offers a hopeful description of how people have made a difference in diverse communities around the world and a practical, accessible handbook for those trying to improve the quality of life in underdeveloped communities everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars new Reformation.......2004-06-25

As we watch news reports of the world in chaos and trouble this Book offers not just salve to ease the pain of some of these small communties but also real solution as they being to restore their dignity with justice for all involved.
The Model SEED/Scale is one that I believe should be studied and applied in some of the rural areas, small towns in this part of Southwest Oklahoma. This method is about a reformation of attitude, self-awareness , and possibilites for growth and change bringing the best healthiest new life possible.
I think that Churches could apply the model as well as a way to restoring justice and change withn themselves and within the communities they serve. Revitalization is something that churches in rural arears everywhere talk about I believe this model could be applied with success.
This book should have a broad readership. It could help change the world.
Rev. Bobbie G. McGarey, Southwest Oklahoma Presbyerian Parish Pastor, Frederick, Temple, Walters, Chattanooga, and Grandfield. Oklahoma.

5 out of 5 stars A methodology for durable social change in poor communities.......2003-10-01

The poor communities of the world are, unfortunately, a laboratory for many thousands of mostly failed experiments in how to improve their situation. This important and valuable book builds on decades of practical experience by the authors in the successful, durable transformation of poor communities. The authors' key insights are (1) the necessity for change to be driven by the collaboration of the community, outside experts, and local government; (this may seem obvious, but many projects fail because they treat one of these three groups as an enemy or obstacle rather than a vital element), (2) to have measurable results, (3) to use the power of the community to modify behavior that is an obstacle to success. This book should be read by donors as well as those directly involved in development activities such as community leaders, government officials, and NGO workers.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

In As the Future Catches You, Juan Enriquez of the Harvard Business School attempts to capture the trajectory of technological progress and understand the forces shaping our social and economic futures. Enriquez argues that February 2, 2001--the date that anyone with Internet access could contemplate the entire human genome--is akin to 1492 and Columbus's discovery of America. Instead of a new continent however, Enriquez sees the alphabet of DNA (A, adenine; T, thymine; C, cytosine; and G, guanine) and predicts that it will be the "dominant language and economic driver of this century." While none of the ideas presented here are entirely new, As the Future Catches You stands out because of Enriquez's ability to view and connect trends--genomics in particular--in a way that just about anyone can understand. Eye-popping typography and graphics coupled with a compact and almost poetic writing style make this thought-provoking book one to savor. Highly recommended. --Harry C. Edwards

Book Description

If you think the world has changed dramatically in the last five years, you haven’t seen anything yet.

You will never look at the world in the same way after reading As the Future Catches You. Juan Enriquez puts you face to face with unprecedented political, ethical, economic, and financial issues, dramatically demonstrating the cascading impact of the genetic, digital, and knowledge revolutions on all our lives.

Genetics will be the dominant language of this century. Those who can “speak it” will acquire direct and deliberate control over all forms of life. But most countries and individuals remain illiterate in what is rapidly becoming the greatest single driver of the global economy. The choice is simple: Either learn to surf new and powerful waves of change—or get crushed trying to stop them. The future is catching us all. Let it catch you with your eyes wide open.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Plainly bad..........2007-09-18

I am actually amazed to realize that this book has received so many positive reviews. It is pitiable from start to end. You could perhaps excuse Henriquez' poor writting style if only the content of the book had been something to cheer for. However this is not the case. Unfortunately Henriquez' argument for how genomics will shape the future of all things, is substantiated by oversimplifications and misconceptions generated by an evident lack of scientific knowledge on the author's behalf, or alternatively, a deliberate attempt to impress the unaware reader with overambitious and melodramatic factoids.
... but let us just analyse some of the statements in say, for instance, the
"MOSQUITOES" section, right among the starting pages:
"Mosquitoes
are flying hypodermic needles.
They can infect you with malaria, dengue, and other
awful things" Well... up to here everything is sort of correct - except for the fact that mosquitoes are nothing like hypodermic needles, but that mosquito's feeding apparatus, for instance, is an extremely complicated structure, quite unlike a single syringe, but hey... what do I know? - ... still, let us excuse the imprecision and awful writing style and read a bit more:

"They do so by transferring a little bit of genetic code
through their saliva..." Really? How does that happen then? Because, during the twelve years I have been studying the genetics of tropical diseases, I never heard of a publication where this has been shown... I had the idea that it was the entire microorganism (virus, parasite, bacteria, etc...) that was inoculated and then caused an infection, but apparently it is just a portion of its genetic code... or he is referring to the mosquito's genes? Help me, I'm confused...

"Into your bloodstream..."
"Which then reprograms part of the way your cells operate... "
"By changing your genetic code ever so slightly..." Oooohhhh, I'm scared...
"In ways that can make you very sick." Now, that's what I call an engaging writing style...

Unfortunately, it goes on and on for over two hundred pages...

5 out of 5 stars The Optimistic Jew.......2007-08-31

Ostensibly a pronouncement about the extraordinary impact that genetics is about to make on human civilization I found his comments and supporting data on knowledge societies versus commodity societies most enlightening. You live in a country without natural resources? LUCKY YOU! You have a much better chance to live in a democratic country with constitutional protections of individual rights. Countries devoid of natural wealth must invest in their human capital. In the knowledge economy this is more likely to create wealth. Small countries with few natural resources have the highest per capita median incomes in the world. If you live in a resource rich country you are more likely to be ruled by thugs or clowns who enrich themselves by enabling large companies with know-how and technology to extract the resource. They have no need to invest in their human capital. Poverty is the result. Enriquez marshals impressive data to support this claim. My optimism about the future possibilities of the Jewish people and Israel (in my own book "The Optimistic Jew") stems to great degree from Enriquez's book. His observation that now lone individuals and single zip codes can create greater wealth than entire countries enabled me to envisage Israel becoming the richest country in the world in per capita, median income by 2030.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinarily provocative!.......2007-03-08

This book will make you think...a "must read" to understand what is going on in our increasingly science-driven world.

2 out of 5 stars Information a bit dated........2007-02-11

The information in this book is a bit dated.
The author mostly ignores the stocking market tech-bubble crash, simply referring to it as the "Nasdaq Adjustment". A great deal of companies and employees were "adjusted" out of existance.

3 out of 5 stars Back to the Future.......2006-10-01

This book is a blend of intresting observations and speculation on various hot technologies (gnemoics in particular) and it's likely impact on people and countries. It is an intresting book and can be easily followed by anybody (even without any intrest or knowledge of the subject). The page layout (with large typeface and fonts) may seem condescending to some of the serious readers, but i think it works in this case, since the book isn't verbose and the author packs thought and info in small sentences, which provokes one to pause and reflect. For eg: sample this: "there used to be one way of getting pregnant.. Now there are more than Seventeen" OR " A seed is an instruument designed to execute a genetic program that transforms soil, water and sun into Wood, Flower.. Fruit"

You need not know anything about Gneomics, Computers, Biology sciences or the various other technologies which this books quotes, to enjoy this book. It's pretty sweeping in scope and you need not necessarily agree with all that the author says about his versiion of the future (i did not). But, one can certainly give full marks to the author for making serious sciences entertaining, by sharing his thoughts on how it is/may impacting our lives.

The challenge and pitfalls in speculating about the future is ironically seen here - This book was written in 2001 and as such the author makes a glowing reference to the AOL-Timewarner merger (which later turned out into a disaster!); India and China are lumped as "having few resources, capital and respect for entrepreneurs", whereas the outsourcing boom in the last five years has clearly proved this wrong.

Not everyone will agree with the author's touting of Gene food (btw, this is not a default food in Europe) or the 'small population' advantage. Patents is relatively a western phenomenon, so comparing the number of patents of US to China or India seems out of place. Couple of chapters venture into politics of why many countries broke apart in the last fifty years and the treatment of it may seen one-dimensional. Afterall, the things that defines a nation is something more complex than what the author seems to define.

There is lot of great Links/references in the Appendix of the book for anybody intrested in exploring further on this topics.

Irrespective of what one's throughts are on the opinions and coverage in this book, i think this is a book which gives value for the time and money spend. It is thought provoking.
I would recommend it to all.
