Book Description
Lameness, one of the most common and most troublesome of all equine ailments, remains the primary reason why horses are unable to fulfill their potential and their riders' and trainers' expectations. More preparation time is lost, more competitions are missed, and more careers are prematurely ended because of lameness than any other condition.
This book analyzes the causes, diagnoses, and management of the myriad causes of lameness:
--Defining and identifying the lame leg; spotting gait abnormalities and non-muscular causes; physical examinations and evaluations; diagnostic tools and other tests; the role of the veterinarian and farrier in pre-purchase examinations.
--Physical therapies; the applicability of rest, medications, and other veterinary procedures.
--Hoof conformation and shoeing options.
--Joint, bone, muscle, and tendon and ligament problems.
--Neurological, dermatological, and developmental orthopedic causes of lameness.
--Treatment of specific conditions to the foot, pastern and fetlock, cannon and splint bones, knee, upper foreleg, hock, upper hind leg, and back.
No other book covers this vital subject in such a comprehensive and understandable fashion. For that reason, no other book deserves a more prominent place on the shelf of anyone who owns, trains, rides, or drives horses.

The book "Lameness: Recognizing and Treating the Horse's Most Common Ailment", is a well-written and informative book. The knowledge presented is accessible to the average horse person, and very extensive, covering just about every possible cause of equine lameness in the legs, hooves, and other parts of a horse's anatomy.
The book also covers methods of identifying different types of lameness, recognizing gait abnormalities, managing diseases, treating wounds, hoof care, shoeing, and available therapies, medications, and veterinary care. Veterinary therapies and surgical procedures are discussed, such as joint lavage, arthroscopic surgery, and the application of casts.

Great book for the money.......2007-05-24
This book is easy to understand, and describes lameness in easy to understand language. Lots of photos and exrays that explain what they are talking about. I highly recommend this book!
Much more than a Lameness Book!.......2007-05-13
Although as yet, I have not read this book completely - it has 1022 pages, it is stuffed full of information. It not only covers lameness, but much more besides and is an absolute reference work on the horses legs, feet and limbs in general. The pictures are great and very useful if you are studying. I also liked the way there is a description of the "ailment", diagnosis followed by treatment and prevention, plus prognosis. There are chapters on physical therapies, medications and veterinary procedures. I would have just loved this book in my student days as there is so much detail to study. The chapter on hoof conformation and shoeing options is invaluable. It is very readable and much more enjoyable than other well-known books on the matter which are far too technical. Every rider should purchase, beg, borrow or steal a copy. Phenominal reading.Adams' Lameness in Horses
Awsome!!!.......2007-04-06
Goodness!!! This is like the bible of Lameness!!! The horse owner will never need another book about lameness if they have this one!!!
Lameness: Recognizing and Treating the Horses Most Common Ailment.......2007-02-22
This is a great book! Not only does it give you info on lameness but it also gives you common knowledge, like; where to give shots. I am ordering my own copy after looking at my mom's. It goes into great detail in scientific terms but explains them in an easy to understand way. Every horse owner should own a copy! It is also very well setup so things are easy to find. The pictures are great, showing cross sections of feet and joints.

Common Internal Medicine problems, pocket medical reference.......2007-07-25
I'm a Pharm.D and work in research, only moonlighting clinically part time doing chart reviews and usually don't remember all of the finer details associated with some diagnoses. This book contains enormously useful information in a condensed format. I find it to be a great quick reference, with appropriate uses of tables and algorithms to quickly refresh one's memory on the spot. literature references were included which isn't always the case for other books of this type.
An indispensable guide for medicine interns........2007-06-30
I just started my intern year in medicine. It's absolutely disconcerting at the beginning to be able to diagnose something but not know the requisite steps in management. This book provided a good guideline for laying out steps in treatment as well as diagnosis of the bread and butter cases that I am seeing on the floors. There is just enough detail to make it a quick reference guide so that you don't get bogged down in the extraneous information. I highly recommend this book for any medical student or interns.
Preface from the book - submitted by Dr. Hylton V. Joffe.......2007-05-30
Are you a medical student, intern, or resident who is (or will be) caring for patients on the medical ward? Do you find it challenging to locate practical and pertinent information about many of the common inpatient medical conditions? If your answers to these questions are "yes," then this book is for you!
Not too long ago, we were trying to learn the basic principles for the day-to-day care of medical inpatients. We found that review articles and book chapters provided an overview of medical topics but often lacked specific information directly applicable to patient care. Frequently, we also had difficulty determining the relevance of findings from original journal articles, especially when there were prior conflicting studies. As a result, we learned a vast amount of practical inpatient medicine from our co-interns, residents, fellows, and staff physicians. These teachers explained how to choose a dose of intravenous furosemide for our patient with decompensated heart failure or how to calculate the dose of subcutaneous insulin for a patient with resolving diabetic ketoacidosis. Basic concepts such as these have often been frustratingly difficult to acquire from other sources. Until now.
Our book, "The Most Common Inpatient Problems in Internal Medicine", provides practical and pertinent information for the most common medical problems encountered on the hospital ward. The chapters cover basic principles that every house officer should know, emphasizing "bread-and-butter" medicine. You will find useful information about common disorders you see everyday, including heart failure, pancreatitis, hyperkalemia, acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, acute renal failure, hyponatremia, and unstable angina. After reading this book, you will have a solid foundation upon which to build your knowledge as you advance in your career. You will find answers to the following types of questions:
* What rate and type of intravenous fluid should I administer to my patient with acute, symptomatic hyponatremia?
* Does my patient have iron deficiency anemia or anemia of chronic disease?
* How do I teach my patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to use a spacer for delivery of her inhaled glucocorticoids?
* How do I differentiate aspiration pneumonia from chemical pneumonitis and do these patients require antibiotics?
* How can I determine whether my patient's renal failure is acute or chronic when prior serum creatinine measurements are unavailable?
* My patient with suspected pulmonary embolism has a normal first-generation lung computed tomography (CT) scan -- what should I do next?
Each chapter is divided into sections that cover the epidemiology, pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, laboratory abnormalities, diagnosis, and management of the disorder under discussion. A "Key Points" box at the beginning of each chapter highlights some important take-home messages. Tables and figures clarify important and complex concepts. Each chapter ends with a list of references, which can also be used by those who wish to further their knowledge in specific areas.
We hope that you will enjoy reading this book as much as we enjoyed writing it.
Best of luck in your career!

Customer Reviews:
Disappointed with Kemper.......2006-09-24
I was very excited to buy this book. I have found it very useful as a mother of 4 and as a pediatric nurse practioner student. I was hoping that K. Kemper took a more intelligent and open perspective on vaccinations. Despite over 11,000 adverse advents reported each year from vaccines, scientific research showing that thimerosol caused neurodevelopmental delays, and MMR causing thrombocytopenia, orchitis, seizures, and many other problems, Kemper refuses to budge on her pro vaccine stance. I believe her experience with public health has enforced her belief that vaccines be inflicted on all despite their complications. Other than this fundamental disagreement with the author, I liked the book.
Guide to avoiding the doctors office.......2005-03-24
I got the first edition of this book nearly 5 years ago when my first born was an infant. It has been incredibly useful for avoiding the doctor - who usually can't really help anyway, or wants to prescribe antibiotics too frequently. Children often run the risk of getting something even worse than what they have by a visit to the doctor's office. This book is a guide for what to do with certain situations. It helped me to make my children more comfortable while a virus ran its course. This book gave me confidence to know that I was doing that best thing for my kids and gave guidelines for when to go to the doctor.
I have two kids - 5 and 2 - who have NEVER had the need to take antibiotics. I give this book a lot of credit for the my healthy kids.
Lacks balance.......2004-01-16
The heading states that this book is a comprehensive guide for safe and effective therapies for childhood illnesses, though it is seriously lacking. Kemper has no experience with homeopathy so she just gives us the usual "it doesn't work" jibe.
Does she even know that Homeopathy successfully cured thousands in epidemics of the past? Did she even do research on the studies that she quotes in this book? Most studies done on homeopathic remedies by the allopathic community are seriously flawed - no homeopath even in attendance.
Then she goes on to validate the use of antibiotics for just about everything, does she not know that antibiotics have been seriously over prescribed for decades and that this is why we are seeing resistant bacterial diseases?
It's easy to see where she is coming from.
I recommend doing a full check on the author before buying any book on childrens health.
Best ever.......2002-10-26
I thought the first edition was terrific. But the newest one is even better. This books contains BOTH mainstream and complementary therapies -- all the latest studies. It's easy to read, and yet my pediatrician said SHE learned new facts from it. MUST HAVE on any parent's bookshelf.
really helpful.......2002-08-12
Dr. Kemper is truly a help to all young parents with questions about their child's health.

Book Description
The scores of books on herbs already available generally restate old, often outdated lore about herbs. Now, Herbs Demystified does something entirely different: It is the first book to explain exactly what herbs actually do inside our bodies and how they achieve their effects. Biochemist Holly Phaneuf covers 100 of the most popular herbs-astragalus, black cohosh, chamomile, echinacea, garlic, gingko, ginseng, milk thistle, pine bark extract, saw palmetto, valerian, and many others. Phaneuf's introductory overview lays out the basic chemical principles that underlie the journey herbal molecules make in our bodies. Then, for each of the herbs, she covers its history and folklore; explains what the herb really does-its evidence of action; its good uses and not so good uses, including the forms in which it is typically available and commonly reported dosages; interesting facts and the bottom line. Like no other herb book before, Herbs Demystified allows readers to custom-fit an herb to one's own particular concern, therefore minimizing trial and error.

This is simply a great resource. I have found it to be very useful for validating research on herbal medicine or in investigating the practical application and efficacy of renowned herbal remedies. Highly recommended for those interested in phytomedicine.
Herbs Demystified: A scientist explain how the most commonherbal remedies really work........2007-05-16
It's a very interesting and sober reading, gives you a great knowledge and finesse before taking herbs unknown to you.
Demystified.........2007-02-19
Definitely one of the better books on these subjects. Good consistent format as the author systematicaly goes through each herb- increased my understanding of how these substances may be used or misused. This book is a must have for anyone supplimenting with herbs- it helps you know what kind of questions you should be asking about any suppliment you may be considering so that even if it isn't covered in this book you know what you don't know before you go searching for answers. It really made me skeptical about other books I ordered which recommend everything on the shelf to everyone. I recommend everyone obtain this book and confront herbalists and other authors with the insights you gain from this book before blindly supplimenting.
A valuable book save one concern:.......2006-03-01
4 stars is an average:
3 stars for implying that only Western Science's double-blind, placebo controlled studies are of any worth.
5 stars for: readablity, layout & format, for including some of the fun and interesting history and folklore, for value, and for the personal anecdotes as well as for explaining, in layman's terms, the science behind the studies. I especially applaud that last point, the author's ability to explain the concepts behind the science in layman's terms.
Since I seem so impressed (I am. btw), it might seem churlish of me to subtract those two stars for the implication that Western "science" is the only way to look at things in general and herbs in particular. I don't think so. I have long training-nearly life long, in fact-training in alternative medicine and other alternative ideas. Therefore I am qualified to benefit from the Western science information and also to ignore or modify for myself the author's bias against traditional information.
I am guessing that's not so of the many readers of this book, not the least because this book is targeted at a general audience, and therefore this bias is quite a large deficiency in my opinion. Further, Dr Phaneuf, in ignoring some of the traditional information available on particular herbs, fails to give some of the traditional cautions and contraindication for certain herbs. That too I find a deficiency. Although I fully agree with the author that some traditional references like "this herb is good for the liver" are useless and possibly dangerous if relied upon, but that's certainly not all there is available in the way of traditional information. If this book were not aimed at a general audience I would not feel compelled to make such an issue of this.
Otherwise, I expect this book will be a valued addition to my library and I congratulate Dr. Phaneuf on an entertaining book in a very accessible format.
Fun and Informative Read!.......2006-02-25
It's wonderful to finally have a real Ph.D. scientist take the mystery out of all the herbal offerings in the world and learn what really works plus why and how! In addition, Dr. Phaneuf has a delightful and engaging writing style that makes learning serious chemistry both enjoyable and accessible to the lay reader.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource for consumers and professionals.......2005-06-28
This well researched guide presents fifty popular herbs used for medicinal purposes. The herbs are profiled in an A-Z format (from alfafa to willow) and each entry presents a thumbnail sketch which covers common uses, active constituents, adverse effects, cautions and contraindications, drug interactions, and doses. This is followed by more in depth information covering the description, parts of the plant used, traditional use and current medicinal use and a lengthy analysis of the scientific research that has been conducted on the particular herb. This latter section is referenced and the source materials can be found in the back of the book. The authors, who are licensed pharmacists, are also objective in their statements so the reader is sometimes provided with conflicting research and can make informed decisions. A handy list located in the front of the book, "Medicinal Herbs for Health Conditions" allows the reader to see in a glance which herbs can be used for particular ailments. This is an excellent reference source for healthcare professionals. The casual user will also find much useful information here although the scientific research sections may be a tad too scholarly.

Breathe Right Now.......2007-05-09
This book has excellent information for anyone who is just diagnosed with asthma. If you have been living with asthma for awhile and have been active in the management of your asthma, you may find that there is very little "new" information contained in the book. You will find that the book contains a good description of the various treatments that may be prescribed by your doctor. Be that as it may, the book continues to be a good resource for anyone with asthma.
Current and Hopeful.......2000-09-04
After a diagnosis of COPD and/or asthma, I did what I always do. I set out to learn as much as possible. This is a wonderful, comprehensive and hopeful book. I have checked much of the info with my pulmonary MD and he too was most impressed and is suggesting it to patients. It is written in understandable terms, with a fine resources section. I learned a lot, and felt a bit more in control of this disease. Because if you give in, it will "git ya". Well done!
BUY THE BOOK IF YOU HAVE ALLERGIES/ASTHMA/SINUSITIS.......1999-04-09
Couldn't breathe. Bought this book. Showed my doctor who changed all my medications. That was six months ago. TODAY? I BREATHE so well that I'm training for the NY marathon. It's hard for me to believe that getting the RIGHT medication can be crucial for allergy and asthma. But I'm a believer.
Buy this book!.......1999-03-10
I have had allergies since birth--and never have felt good until I did the things written in this book. An excellent book on why allergies happen and what you can do--today--to stop them. I took the book to my doctor and she changed my medication to include steroid nasal inhalers. This helped me go through two pollen seasons without missing any work. SUPERB!!
Excellent, easy-to-understand book on breathing problems.......1999-03-10
I have sinusitis and asthma, and my children have the same. We have suffered for too many years according to this book. It enlightened me to learn that my sinus drainage actually triggers asthma--thus, I have learned to stay on top of sinus infections and post nasal drip--to END ASTHMA. It works. Dr. Smolley is brilliant. The book is a must read for any parent or person with allergies, asthma, sinusitis or other lung disease. Read it--and do what he says--it will change your life the way it has ours.

Pathology Recall.......2001-05-14
when i first got this book, i was dissapointed... its all in table form. 'what is the most common cause of sideroblastic anemia' etc. over the course of my second year, i referred to this book as a reference more and more. eventually i came to depend on it like i do toilet paper ( i dont want to know what i'd do without it). it is one of the most usefull books i own. this book explains everything i want to know, including diagnostic techniques, signs and symptoms, and underlying mechanisms of disease. if you like the recall series you will probably like this book. Golgan also has a similar book called most commons in medicine. it has essentially the same info and much more, and is intended for 3rd and 4th year. if your going to try to use a book for usmle 1, this book is better. if you want a reference book, the medicine one is pry better.
Real nice pic's and theory stuff.......2000-03-28
I really liked most of the diagrams and the detailed to the point , whats needed, stuff for the USMLE exam. Will recomend this book for everyones use who are giving USMLE.
