Interesting and helpful perspectives.......2007-09-09
The two lectures/workshops on the 4 CD set explain in a clear and understandable way in which ways we can help ourselves to become less enslaved to our own (negative) thoughts, and how to take some distance from our minds and the constant rambling that goes on in there. By sharing a different perspective on our being (we are not our minds or what our mind tels us) and giving us a path to step into this perspective, we can let go of negative patterns and thoughts, and find outselves more free from worrying and stress. I recommend this for anyone wanting to broaden their minds and find more freedom and power in their lives.
MAKING YOUR THOUGHTS WORK FOR YOU.......2007-09-07
I ENJOYED ALL THE NEW INFORMATIVE INFORMATION THAT DR.DYER AND B. KATIE HAD TO SHARE. I WILL USE THIS INFORMATION FOR MYSELF AND AT WORK. IT WAS A GREAT WAY TO LISTEN TO A LIVE RECORDED WORK SHOP.
Interesting .......2007-06-13
Wayne Dyer has been one of my favorite authors for over 30 years. Over the years, his style has changed, more spiritual, but his goal of helping others has not. Byron Katie was someone I never heard of prior to this CD. Listening to this CD, I found that Wayne Dyer's finesse and charm could still be felt. Yet, when listening to Byron Katie, I did not experience any type of connection. Still, given that this CD is from a live conference, you will hear stories that are quite moving and interesting. May be worth a try.
"Thought Provoking!".......2007-05-25
I loved listening to this set. You get a man's and woman's perspective on how to improve your ability to control your thoughts and outlook on life. Wayne Dyer is a little more gentle and Katie is amazing! I love it!
A nice awakeng! This will make your question your beliefs!.......2007-05-19
I've been an all time fan of Dr. Wayne Dyer and Dr. Deepak Chopra. The first of the four CD-ROMs is where Dr. Dyer talks about the same things he pretty much always talks about ... spirit and our thoughts. Nothing striking and out of the ordinary relative to what we have heard in the past. He's still good!
Though the second and third CD-ROMS is where Byron Katie comes in! She is stellar! Amazing! If you've been to hell and back, been whipped around by life, or are in deep pain and struggling within... do yourself a favor and buy this just to listen to Byron Katie.. Not promising here that you will be cured and suddenly floating on blissful clouds... but Byron Katie is one who does not just give you all the Spiritual Bookish Mumbo Jumbo Jiberish... Her's is based on solid experience and you can hear and feel it emanating from that space within her. She's good and her number one question to the audience about their beliefs and deeply embedded patterns of thinking and living is ~ "Is it True?"... she challenges you and I am sure that it will get even the most intelligent amongst us to pause and question themselves... no, she does not plant doubts, rather she gets you to do a reality check in areas of your life that are dark, gloomy, and full of pain. She does this skillfully and Dr. Wayne Dyer tells the audience that she's a master indeed!
The highlight of this product is Byron Katie, and suprisingly though his product, not Dr. Wayne Dyer.. you will hear the audience reflect that as Dr. Wayne Dyer tries to gain some of the spot light for himself too :-) He's used to that stuff but now there's Byron Katie sharing the platform with him, and shining beautifully because she speaks from a rich experience base. Dr. Wayne Dyer gazes in awe.. lol!
Worth the investment!

The smart take on initiative .......2007-09-17
Corporate employees must contend with downsizing, scarce jobs and scarcer benefits. In today's virtual corporations, a handful of employees do the work that many people used to do. To survive, make yourself an irreplaceable employee. That's the short, sweet, familiar point (and the only message, given the book's brevity) that Bob Nelson conveys in this simple but clear manual for long-term employment survival. Take the initiative, assume responsibility, know your job better than anybody else and fulfill your supervisor's expectations - even the unspoken ones. Become indispensable: it's here in a nutshell. We find that Nelson provides valuable tips on being a proactive employee and, for fun, illustrates them with some bright little stories.
Initiative + Timing = Promotion.......2003-07-18
This is a very easy to read book full of examples of how people were able to make headway on the corporate ladder by showing initiative, waiting until the timing was right, and even disobeying superiors.
Through a string of specific examples from which generalized ideas are formed, this book explains how you can be an empowered employee with a driving force that will not only bring you job satisfaction, but can help you turn even a doldrum job into an opportunity for success.
The ideas, such as "be a person that makes things happen" can apply to any job, you just have to think about how it can apply to you.
Pro-active thinking!.......2003-02-03
Bob Nelson has assembled a quick reading book on popular business concepts and situations facing a regular employee. He offers suggestions on becoming more pro-active than re-active to situations that arise through out many different careers. Nelson also gives examples of true story scenarios in which a person took a chance or challenged an idea and was later promoted for it. He talks about successes and also failures in careers in which people either sat on the sidelines or got in the game. This book most can probably read in a day as it is under 100 pages and reads very fast. It has quick chapters and a lot of useful insight.
Not so thrilled.......2002-05-17
I was a bit disappointed after reading the book because I thought the author was giving 'general advice' rather than 'specific tips'. I would rather recommend 'The Administrative Assistant' (Crisp Publications)
Encouraging a good employee to be a great employee.......2002-01-23
Bob Nelson doesn't pull any punches, and he says what every employer has always wanted to say, but couldn't quite find the right words. I am purchasing a copy of this book for each of my departments. It will be required reading for all employees. It drives me crazy when an employee is asked to do something and the first thing out of his/her mouth is, "but I don't know how." Fine, you don't know how, but you are an intelligent human being whom I hired, and you can learn. I love the person who doesn't have a clue, but takes on the task, thinks things through, asks questions, and gets the job done. Stagnation is boring, and it's not long before it starts to stink. This books gives employees great ideas to keep from being anything but stagnate. If they work for me, they know actions speak louder than words, and the right actions will take them places. Employers, be sure to read the book. As a companion, read "First, Break All the Rules" by Marcus Buckingham and Donald O. Clifton, Ph.D. With these books, you will have the tools to make your organization soar.

Here, we have an introductory Internet book (indeed, an introduction to intermediate-level personal computing in a lot of ways) that's well suited to people who don't mind reading. Web 101: Making the Net Work for You is meant as a textbook for use in a classroom; so, it's also for people who don't mind spending money. Is this book accurate, thorough, and readable? Yes. Is it a good value? Not really. However, don't hesitate to buy it, if you need it for a class--you won't be disappointed.
Author Wendy Lehnert assumes that her readers know next to nothing about the Internet, and proceeds to educate them largely through the "naming-of-parts" approach. This book teems with lists of terms and other textbook features, like questions and exercises at the end of each chapter. Some of the questions that are associated with the online exercises seem kind of silly ("What did you have to do to view your postcard?"), but should serve to push reluctant surfers online. Lehnert takes care to allay readers' fears about scams, viruses, and security--she explains what the hazards are and how they're best avoided. She also likes to treat the Internet as a community to be joined, instead of as a technology to be coped with. In a typical section, she explains how to shop for software by consulting expert reviews on information sites, as well as visiting software shops. --David Wall
Topics covered: The Internet, for people who haven't used it much, but who are comfortable with the basics of using a PC. The author explains Web surfing, e-mail, information searches, downloadable software, and online shopping. There's also introductory coverage of publishing pages with HTML.
Book Description
Rather than simply studying tools that are used on the Web, this book presents an approach specifically tailored to the needs of the user. It has been revised to focus on up-to-date issues that all users of the World Wide Web need to know. This book familiarizes readers with a varied supply of topics including, Sypware, encryption, and the increase in volume of "junk" E-mail. From novice surfers to seasoned programmers, this book is right for anyone who wants to enhance their Web experience. @ISBN = 0-321-12947-4 @MAINCAT = Internet/ Web Technologies @SUBCAT = Internet/ Web Technologies @DATALINE1 = 2003, 700 pages, 7 3/8 x 9 1/8 @DATALINE2 = Paperback, $60.00k

Boring junior high school level book........2003-12-13
All the chapters constantly drag on and on like a boring novel. The book is somewhat like a director trying to strech a 50 minute movie into a 2 hour epic. There are few terms in bold and tons of useless garbage in between that is just opinions and junk you don't need to know. This book is more like the type of book you will find in junior high school levels. Like a mother talking to a child type of writing quality. There are many other outstanding books on the market. Don't waste your time purchasing this book. Anyway, this is a school textbook, not a reference book that you would keep at your workstation or library. Why would you buy a textbook and not a "computer" type of book. How can this be a second edition? Many typos have not been edited.
Best Computer Book I've Read.......2003-01-05
The Second Edition (2002) of Web 101 is a superb book. I respectfully disagree with the Amazon.com review's opinion that the book is "not really" a good value. It is expensive, but worth it. It is very well written, with lots of facts and examples to back up the author's points. The layout of the book may be the best I've ever had the pleasure to see.
Don't let the iguana cartoon on the cover mislead you into thinking it's a lightweight! I would especially recommend this for grade or high school teachers using the Net in their classroom, but anyone who wants a solid, thorough understanding of this topic will enjoy this highly readable work.
Book Description
If you own a second home, you have the potential to boost your annual income by literally thousands of dollars by turning it into a vacation rental that earns money when you aren't using it. In this book-and-CD package, you'll learn exactly how to do it. Even if you're already using your second home as a vacation rental, the book can help you maximize the income it generates each year. It doesn't matter where you want to be along the spectrum of possibilities:
1. If you've never offered your property as a vacation rental before, you'll find all the tools, tips, and information you need to save thousands in commissions by handling everything yourself. It really isn't that hard to do.
2. If you prefer to have a rental agent or property manager take care of everything for you but aren't quite satisfied with the number of bookings you're getting, you'll discover ways to inexpensively promote your property to prospective renters from all over the world--and how to negotiate lower management commissions on the business that you bring in.
3. Or maybe you'd rather steer a middle course by handling the marketing and bookings yourself and buying cleaning and maintenance services from a property manager or from some local firm. That, too, is a viable option.
Whatever course you choose, you'll find everything you need in this book/CD package. Designed as a complete
Vacation Property Owner's Toolkit, the package consists of a 300-page book in a three-ring binder, and a CD containing crucial rental forms and checklists that you can customize and print out for your own use. The CD also contains a collection of Windows programs selected to help you manage and market your vacation property easily and effectively.
And, by the way, after you've applied what you've learned, you can probably reduce or completely eliminate any current print-advertising expenses. The approach described in this package really is that powerful.

The keys to Your Success!.......2007-09-22
A vacation rental owner myself, I found the information in this book absolutely fabulous! You'll read and re-read this "Bible" for vacation rental owners. Regardless of where your property is located this book covers all the essentials to help you to be succssful in the Vacation Rental business. Easy to read and well written it is money well spent!
Engaging and Full of Practical Wisdom!.......2006-09-05
We're pleased to share this review written by travel writer and vacation-rental guru Joyce Hadley Copeland, author of the "Renting Paradise" series of e-guidebooks on exceptional vacation rental properties. The review originally appeared in Ms. Copeland's Ramblings blog at her RentingParadise.com website and is posted here with her permission. -- Alfred & Emily Glossbrenner, Authors
DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME... THEN AGAIN, MAYBE YOU SHOULD
If you've had great experiences renting vacation homes--and especially if you've been swept into the welcoming (usually figurative) embrace of a particularly passionate owner--a funny thing might start happening. You might start imagining yourself doing the vacation rental thing yourself. And why not ask Alfred and Emily Glossbrenner?
If you own or are thinking of buying a vacation rental property, the Glossbrenners will show you how to pay your mortgage and make money by renting it yourself. Their 300-page book/CD seminar-in-a-box is based on what the couple learned from a decade renting a Williamsburg-style cottage on their property in Bucks County, PA. Today their second home is routinely fully booked as much as six months in advance.
The book is engaging (the Glossbrenners are successful authors with over 60 books to their credit) and full of practical wisdom, step-by-step instructions and clear examples that will guide you in maximizing the Internet to promote and rent your dream vacation or retirement home (finding the right listing sites, boosting your search engine ranking etc.).
HERE'S WHAT I ESPECIALLY LOVE: Guidelines for writing a property description! "Write from the Heart!" These smart-cookie marketers advocate infusing rental descriptions with "personality." (Because, aren't we all tired of the hype?) They talk about "painting a picture" for rental prospects... going into detail about what you (the owner) personally love about the property such as distinctive architectural details or an interesting history... weaving in off-the-beaten-path secret places you've discovered. That's music to a prospective vacation renter's ears. AND they devote a whole section to "Enhancing Your Listing With Great Photos." Hallelujah!
The Glossbrenners also include a CD containing a collection of personally-selected Windows programs to help you manage and market your vacation rental property--in what is becoming a highly competitive market niche--in your spare time.
Check out the 30-day Money-Back Guarantee. But also check out the Glossbrenners' promise: "Regardless of your rental rate, and regardless of season, if you get just one extra booking as a result of what we have to teach you, this vacation rental owner's training package will have paid for itself many times over. And it will continue to do so year after year from now on."
Pssst: Check with your accountant. You may be able to write the whole thing off as a business expense.

The Bible for Vacation Rentals By Owner.......2006-02-25
I have read countless books, magazines, travel guides, marketing manuals to better help me effectively market my vacation rental home. I only wish I read this book first! Emily and Alfred Glossbrenner's book is THE BIBLE of ALL Vacation Rental "How To" books. Skip the "Cliff Notes" and go straight to the source! Since incorporating their tried and true marketing approach, my summer vacation rental property is booked for the summer of 2006 and it is only February!
The best tool for a new vacation rental owner!.......2005-08-02
I have read every book in this category (at least every book that is available on Amazon) and have to say that Glossbrenners' book is the best guide for a vacation rental owner, especially someone just starting out. Alfred and Emily guide you through all of the minute detals of setting up the rental, from the right type of furnishings to the beach towels, pet policies, etc. They carefully explain the possibilities available to a vacation rental owner with Internet advertisement, how to choose the sites to advertise on and go into great detail with setting up listings on the 4 largest US vacation rental listing sites. The CD that comes with the book contains forms that are a great help for creating your first rental agreement or a "getting ready" check list, among others.
We have bought our first rental a little over a year ago and were fully booked for the season within 6 weeks from going online, based on suggestions we implemented from Glossbrenners book. We purchased two more properties this year and once again, having used the basic techniques and tools from Alfred and Emily's book, all 3 properties were fully booked in 2005. This occupancy rate is significantly higher than average for our area. I credit this book with our initial and continuing success.
Thank you, Alfred and Emily!
This book is excellent for renting out your vacation home!.......2005-04-22
We have decided to rent out our San Diego home this summer. Thanks to this book, we are already ahead of schedule; we have 4 out of the 8 weeks booked. My friends in San Diego are impressed and are now working at renting out their houses as well.
The book is well-organized and steps you through step-by-step on how to rent out your vacation property yourself. It is well written and explains everything in the right level of detail.
The biggest problem that I have now is that my friends keep borrowing the book, I need to tell them to buy their own.
Regards,
David Brehm

A wonderful beginning.......2007-07-20
After having read online information, by Pete Ramey, displayed for interested horse enthusiasts, I wanted more information about the natural trim for keeping a barefoot horse sound. I have read and reread this book three times and each time find more information that I can relate to as I work at perfecting this trim on my horses. The book leaves me wanting to know and see more and more on the topic. I am "sold" on the technique. I found the book excellent and hope to gain more insight with future clinics, or perhaps, a professional in my area to check my work. If a person is not interested in trying the technique, this book will certainly make a person "think" about currently accepted practices.
Great companion book to Jaime Jacksons tapes and books.......2007-06-13
Great book. I've also purchased Jaime Jackson's "Founder: Prevention and Cure" & 3 trimming DVD's. Just gave this book & DVD's to my farrier and asked for his assistance in getting my horses set up correctly. One horse has low soles, flares and is always "tenderfooted". Farrier/vet has previously recommended shoes for comfort. Nothing about shoes seems natural to me and the horse has to be tranquilized to get the job done. After reading & watching tapes, I'm very hopeful that the natural trimming methods will offer much needed comfort. I also have a pony who has had laminitis. We've made dietary changes recommended and are beginning the natural trims. I have purchased nippers, knife, rasp, and hoof stand. Too intimidated to use nippers yet, but rasping has already made some difference.
Really Great Book!.......2007-05-16
Excellent book. Clearly written with lots of usable information. I will use it constantly as a reference. Updates are available on the author's website and help clarify the book as he grows in his profession so you can grow right along with him and benefit from his new discoveries. This book is better than other natural horse books I have read.
Once you've gone "natural", you'll (or your horse) will never go back!.......2007-01-12
If you want your favorite hay-burner(s) to be comfortable, healthy and happy - this book will help you by maintaining the natural foot for your gelding or mare. BE ADVISED - it is best to have a farrier who specializes in natural hoof care get your horse's hooves into the barefoot shape BEFORE you try any of these techniques.
Founder - Hope At Last!.......2007-01-05
A lucid, logical presentation on the prevention and cure for founder accompanied by many excellent photos which exemplify the principles discussed. After only a few weeks days of applying these priciples, my horse and I are riding the trails again.

A cheap book, priced right.......2007-09-16
I bought this book based on a recommendation given in a session designed to help employees prepare for retirement. I found little of value in the book.
An easy read with practical solutions and excersices........2007-02-06
This book is written in such a way that it applies to everyone looking for this solution. And it gives very easy excersices to help you think and figure out 'your' living.
Joyfully Jobless can mean happily self-employed.......2006-11-29
If you've ever wanted to tell your boss what he can do with your job, if you've ever thought, "boy, if I could just do this (whatever it is that you love) for a living...", or if you want to call all the shots when choosing a career, this is the book for you. This book is an easy, enjoyable read. Barbara gives some ideas for self employment, and helps you evaluate which opportunities are a good fit. Not a step-by-step primer, but a great book to help you open up to the possibilities.
Worth the money and the read!.......2006-08-13
This is a great book and very motivational. It was helpful with many suggestions and informational if you want to live a better life independent of being dependant on others to make your living. A great and fun read, the reason for reading this does not matter. I purchased for my son-in-law and read it first. Now that he has it and does not wish to return it, I will purchase my own copy.
Afraid to Change Jobs - Don't Be - This Book Makes it Fun!.......2006-07-28
I first encountered "Making a Living Without a Job:.." by Barbara Winter about 9 years ago. I had bought it for my husband, who was in between jobs, and ended up reading it myself. By the time I was done, I had determined to leave a 20 year career in computers and go to massage school. I now own my own health center in New York state.
One year I gave 10 of these books to people who were 'stuck' in their jobs/careers but who were afraid to change. As a result 14 people ended up changing their jobs/careers because the people to whom I gave the book also passed it on.
I find, as a massage therapist, that much of the stress people have is due to a poor fit in their career. What might have been right at one time in their life, no longer is good for them.
I recommend this book to someone at least once each week and have now decided to have it in stock.
I recently gave copies to two friends who might need to leave high executive positions in an international corporation.
ANYONE at any LEVEL in ANY JOB can find the step-by-step analysis in this book the most helpful thing EVER in helping them to find the job that will really be fulfilling for them!

WARNING!!! DANGEROUS MISINFORMATION!! DONT BUY THIS BOOK!!!.......2007-01-17
WARNING! THIS BOOK CONTAINS DANGEROUS MISINFORMATION!!! I recently ordered this book from an on-line website (author Debra Fulghum Bruce and Samuel Thatcher, M.D.) On p. 172 the doctors discuss folic acid requirements for expectant mothers...they say that you should be taking 1,000 milligrams. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY WRONG!! You should only be taking 1,000 micrograms at the most! The book made me panic! My prenatal vitamin only contains 1 milligram (1,000 micrograms), so I was afraid I was subjecting my baby to possible spina bifida. I called the pharmacist and he confirmed that I should only be taking 800-1,000 micrograms. 1,000 milligrams, as the book recommends, would be WAY TOO MUCH! This book runs the risk of sending expecting mothers into a panic and potentially causing a dangerous overdose of folic acid. Don't read this book! Find another source. Any author that would be this careless is not the source you want to approach for help!
Great book, but make sure you know what it you're buying.......2006-11-23
I was under the impression that this was a book for all couples wanting information on conceiving. It is actually more focused on infertility and oververcoming/dealing with infertility. There are some helpful chapters on BBT charting and drug-free ways to improve your conception chances (which is more what I was looking for), but as I mentioned beofre the primary focus is on infertile couples.
Cover of book misleading .......2006-08-16
I bought this book thinking it would be a good read before my husband and I started trying for a baby. The cover captions looked like there would be some great information inside. However, when I got the book and read the table of contents I immediately realized it was a book about infertility. I only give it 1 star not based on the content but on the misleading cover of the book. I'll have to pay better attention next time!
choose another book!.......2005-10-08
I've recently come into the TTC group and have sought out many books to get prepared...this book looked good, said all the right things on the cover but when I got it home, it was very hard to stay interested! It was like a textbook, not a very difficutlt read but difficult to want to keep reading. Now I'm ordering new books because I dislike this one so much. I'm sure if has useful information, but I'd rather read something more "personable".
Not Very Good for Those Trying to Conceive..........2005-09-20
This book read like a textbook...not very interesting or helpful. In fact, I read through it and was so unimpressed that I returned it the day after I received it!
Book Description
Often when people feel stuck, they try to change something about themselves. Authors Ritchey and Axelrod suggest that instead they should learn to see situations in new ways and create new options for relating to others. That process begins with DiSC, an assessment tool that reveals one's style of interaction. DiSC is an acronym for the four styles -- Dominance (direct and decisive), Influence (optimistic and outgoing), Supportive (sympathetic and cooperative), and Conscientious (concerned and correct). This book teaches readers how to recognize their style and its implications, how to read the styles of others, and how to choose the most effective style (or combination of styles) for any situation.

Not helpful .......2007-05-24
I was looking for a book to learn about the DISC tool and to be able to interpret the results of a test, something I could use to train others. This was not helpful. I also purchased the sister book about teams, and that was almost exactly the same as this one. Don't buy both. The same charts were present with VERY minor changes. I don't recommend this book.
Good for retail .......2007-03-21
I gave the tests to the managers in my store and showed how each of us had different working personalities and what we needed to do to be able to work togther better.
Great for Diagnosing.......2007-03-03
I thought this book nailed behavior patterns to a "T", and also provided insight as to how best to approach people. It was very insightful for massaging relationships, but glossed over the fact that some personality types aren't ever going to perform certain functions well no matter WHAT you do (e.g., "social butterflies" are never going to be "producers", and vice versa, no matter how persuasively you ask). You can ease the situation but you're never going to change who a person is at a fundamental level.
Wasted money, wasted time.......2006-03-02
That's what you get when you buy this book. The book simply reprints the same material you get in the DISC instrument. There is nothing, nothing, new here. There is no insight, no detail, no discussion on how to use the information. I use DISC constantly in my business and found this book a total waste. If you want to understand DISC go to www.discinsights.com and get their home study program. It's terrific, detailed, and provides lots of examples. I also recommend the book "The 4-Dimensional Manager." Still not as good as the above reference but at least it's worth the money.
A great tool for work.......2004-12-15
As an earlier reviewer noted, this book isn't the DiSC in its purest form. However, it does provide a framework for understanding relationships at work clearly and concisely. I was introduced to the DiSC during a leadership school I attended through work, and this book provided me with the tools and framework I needed to share the model with my staff. In one-on-ones, I've been told that the process was both enlightening and useful on a daily basis.
If you're looking for pure DiSC, look elsewhere. But if you want a tool to improve the way you and your staff interact, written in a way that's easy for everyone to understand, this is the book.

Wrong generation.......2007-01-11
We got our son a new Mindstorm for Christmas - the NXT. This book was designed for the previous generation of the Mindstorm, so was of no use to us. The description on-line was not clear to us that we were wasting our money.
Whoa.......2004-03-02
This is the perfect compilation set of fun, and challenging projects which can easily be manipulated for your own robotic tastes. The sources of this book are the masters in the field, and do an astounding job sharing their wealth of knowledge.
Where do they get these people?.......2002-10-26
Once again Syngres has put together a top notch team of Lego builders. The robots in here are incredible to say the least. I was amazed to see that CS Soh had a hand in this book as I've been a big fan of his LEGO work on the web for some time. I just finished building all of the robots in the prequel to this book for the Star Wars Dark side lego kit when I saw this become available. These are all top notch robots built by people who know their lego robots. They don't beat around the bush-they give you step by step instructions for buidling these robots. They go one step beyond the first book by giving you alternate building instructions for download. I'm going to use this in my high school robotics class. Top notch.
Book Description
Most people think talent is genetically determined. Either you can sing or you can't. You get calculus or it's beyond you. You have what it takes to succeed -- or you don't.
The truth about human performance is far more encouraging, says Dr. Bob Rotella in Life Is Not a Game of Perfect. Dr. Rotella, the bestselling author of Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect and Golf Is a Game of Confidence, believes that talent, as conventionally defined and measured, plays a secondary role in determining one's fate. Far more important is real talent, a combination of character, attitude, and devotion, which makes greatness possible. And the good news is that anyone can develop real talent.
As always, Dr. Bob Rotella speaks from experience. He has made a career of helping people chase and catch their dreams. His authority as a sports psychologist is well known. Golfers from Tom Kite to David Duval to Pat Bradley have relied on him to help them break through to triumphs on the PGA Tour. But Bob Rotella's practice extends beyond the sports world. He is a consultant on performance enhancement to leading businesses such as Merrill Lynch, General Electric, and PepsiCo. He has worked with successful people in businesses ranging from law to entertainment.
From hundreds of clients and countless students, Dr. Bob Rotella has learned what works. In Life Is Not a Game of Perfect, he shares what he has learned and what he teaches his clients. Real talent, he explains, is "brilliance of a different sort." It is the nerve to choose a career doing something you love or the ability to learn to love what you do. It is courage, persistence, and determination. It is the ability to handle failure and honor commitments.
Whether you think so or not, real talent is within your grasp. In Life Is Not a Game of Perfect, Dr. Bob Rotella will help you make it a decisive element in your life. He can show you how to identify and cultivate the qualities that lead to success, prosperity, and happiness.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting look at what talent is all about!.......2006-08-31
Enjoyed listening to LIFE IS NOT A GAME OF PERFECT by Dr. Bob
Rotella, written and read by the author . . . he is a sports psychologist
who believes talent, as it is usually defined, only plays a secondary
role in determining our fate . . . what's more important is something
he coins as "real talent," a combination of character, attitude and
devotion that makes greatness possible.
Best of all, Rotella contends that anybody can develop such real
talent--and he gives some ideas for doing so in this book.
One key is to choose a career doing something you love or
develop the ability to love what you do.
In addition, he shares such other valuable tidbits as the
following:
* People who are successful surround themselves with people
who support their dream.
* Half an hour or so is enough time to discuss what happened
at work. After that, it is up to you to make sure your spouse enjoys
the evening.
* People with real talent compete primarily amongst themselves. Their
quest is to see how good they can get.
* Don't waist your enthusiasm or passion for a company that won't
appreciate it. But if you're a manager, you must appreciate what
people can do for you and your organization.
Okay. Not great........2006-08-27
Okay. Not great. Nice feel good book, but not much in terms of practical application of psychology.
A terrific book.......2000-07-20
This book is about making the best of your abilities, whether you're a graduate of an Ivy League school or Podunk State University. I wish I'd read this book when I was in my teens.
I'll be buying copies for young people that can use this to develop "real talent." I consider it a near-perfect graduation present.
As an aside, I could not disagree more with the earlier review that complained about overachieving and getting burned out. I didn't consider Rotella's approach to be a burnout one at all. If you've found what you love to do, then becoming really good at it is not a recipe for burnout, but rather satisfaction. It sounds like the sour reviewer burned himself oout at something he didn't really love, or couldn't learn to love.
This stuff really works!.......2000-07-06
As tough as it is to imagine, Bob Rotella's teachings on life are just as effective as his now-famous teachings on golf. This book is a good, quick read, but its impact will be felt on you long after, IF you take to heart the lessons imparted and integrate them into your life. Just as he's lowered many a handicap, Doc's lessons on the importance of free will are key to understanding the essence of "real talent"; it's not about being a workaholic, thank God...
Golf he probably knows..........1999-12-12
But this book is somewhat scatterbrained. About 60% is correct, 20% is so-so and 20% is a recipe for disaster. When he is focused on "how to do better than the next person in a competetion" his advice is of the type that will help you do better. But the essence is "work harder than the next guy". Ok, do that. Then the next guy does the same. Eventually, one of you is working 22 hour days and the other drops from an ulcer or heart attack. (Been there, done that)
Some of his basic ideas are correct, mainly that free will determines many things in life, many more than innate talent. He does identify some good role models and others who are poor role models. However, he tends to wonder off into topics where he has little or no expertise (a good editor could have done wonders here...reducing the book by 30-40% would have added 1 or 2 stars to the rating).
Anyway, for those who are chronic underachievers, the book may be of some value. For those who have gone the overachiever route and seen the toll it takes, well you would probably do like I did and put the book down about halfway to 2/3 through and go sound the alarm.
One thing that is not surprising, this book is listed as "very popular at Merrill Lynch". He is very complimentary of one particular Merrill VP workaholic in the Washington DC area.
