Customer Reviews:
Not the best resource.......2007-05-09
While some of the pretest books out there are excellent for shelf exam preparation, this book is lacking in terms of how representative the quetsions are. The best resource for the internal medicine shelf in my opinion is the MKSAP For Students available in book and CD form from the ACP. The questions in there reflect the content and difficulty found on the actual exam. I scored well on the shelf using the MKSAP and supplementary reading on key topics like Chronic cough, asthma, CHF, COPD, DM, outpatient medicine, etc., etc., during the clerkship.

Not good for the shelf exam!.......2007-05-17
I bought this book to study for the Introduction to Physical Diagnosis shelf exam, which I took two weeks ago. It did not help at all for the exam. The scope of the questions in this book were way off from the questions on the shelf, and the questions in this book were also harder than the questions on the shelf. Maybe this book would help for other exams, such as the medicine shelf, but it is NOT good for the physical diagnosis shelf!!
Surprisingly useful for Step I.......2002-11-10
I used this book for the physical dx shelf exam at the end of our 2nd year clinical methods course. The book was absolutely essential for this exam, and indeed proved very helpful for step I as well. All questions were in vignette format, as is Step I. In contrast with some other books in the PreTest series, the questions were consistent and of an appropriate level of difficulty. The answers are extensive and helpful as well. THE QUESTIONS IN THIS BOOK WERE ACTUALLY FUN TO DO!!

This book is a pretty decent book for the boards,it lets you know even the smallest detail, and helps judge yourself on where you stand,so i would reccommend this book...
One good book to get ready for the final show.......2000-06-26
This is one of the very good books that came to be very useful in my final preparations. If you have spent enought time to study the subject matter, this book will be an outstanding help for you.. But if you think to start with this book, this may not be that useful ..
I have liked the way the auhors organized the book.. My sincere gratitude to them.....

Customer Reviews:
great review!.......2006-03-04
Pre-Test for Pediatrics was a great high-yield source for clinical clerkship or the Boards. It contains 500 questions with complete answers with references to further read up on the topics. It also contains black and white pictures throughout. It was a great review for the shelf exam. I find the Pre-Test series an important adjunct to my studies because it helps pinpoint my weaknesses.
Excellent for the shelf!.......2005-03-06
I just took the peds shelf exam and there were questions that felt like they were lifted directly out of this book. I only wished i got to go through it twice! Go through the explanations for every question (even the ones you get right) and you should be good to go!
Re: MS Reader Version is cumbersome.......2004-12-18
I agree with Ben. Look at the PreTest Pediatrics PocketTest for Palm at www.BrainGlue.com . They have an interactive quiz program that presents explanations appropriate to your choices. The ebooks like MobiPocket and MSReader annoy the heck out of me, having to flip pages back and forth to view the answers. BrainGlue also has a scoring system that analyzes how you're doing in each chapter. It's way easier to use than the MobiPocket or MSReader ebooks.
Great for shelf board exam.......2004-07-07
When I took the shelf board, my jaw dropped - it was as if the board came straight out of this book. Concise, but loaded with information. Lacks only info on immunizations and milestones, but these can be found anywhere.
Exellent review!.......2003-07-12
This book is a perfect review for the USMLE-2. It include 5oo clinical-cases question with pictures and X-rays. The questions are shorter than on real exam but they help you to concentrate on high-yeld topics and learn important details which are often missed in other review books.
The book is well-organized. The questions are arranged in chapters. For example, the newborn infant, respiratory system, cardiovascular system... This allows you to learn the topic first and than sharpen your knowlege using this book. Plus, you can practice with questions before you finish reading the whole Pediatrics!
Perfect review!

Download Description
These "500 questions, answers, and explanation" books are designed to simulate the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1. Each is authored by an expert in the field and has been reviewed by students who have recently passed the exam. As Step 1 is becoming increasingly more clinical in nature, when applicable, clinical vignette-style questions requiring a two-step reasoning process are also included. All of the Pretest titles include a "high-yield" fact section to reinforce key concepts.

Close to the real thing.......2002-10-31
As indicated on the blurb, this is probably the among closest you can get to the real questions. The format makes the book easy to carry along. Work through these questions and try to think one step beyond what they're asking for!
A very good book........2002-04-12
Many questions are good and useful for preparing the USMLE, not only for step 1 but also for step 2.

Customer Reviews:
Helpful Review.......2003-08-23
I believe this e-book is a very helpful review. Not only does it give questions and answers, but it also gives rationale with references. I give it 4 stars. The only downfalls are that you cannot print the chapters/pages, and that the answers do not include the question...so if you don't remember the question, then you have to go back to look it up. Overall, it is a very good study guide and I would recommend it!
TOO BASIC.......2001-12-14
This book was much too basic for my review purposes. Also, the questions in this book do not resemble the questions on the NREMT-P test.
good job.......2000-10-09
mr. westfal did and excellent job with this book. i did kind of poorly in my medic class and when it came time for the final i got this review guide and passed with flying colors. especially the cardio section (which i struggled with in class) i had a much better understanding of what i was supposed to know about cardio drugs and reading dysrhythmias on an ecg and interpreting them into which algorythm i am supposed to use. and also there are not as many pasg pants ?'s which is good because in at least michigan they are elimanting the use of the mast pants and the pants are no longer on the ambulance. thank you again for your help mr. westfal, it was much appreciated.

Now updated to reflect the USMLE Step 2 exam, with greater emphasis on case presentations and diagnostic skills. Reviewed by McGraw-Hill's Medical Student Advisory Committee to ensure simulation of the USMLE test-taking experience.
Customer Reviews:
Well written but not the best solution for the USMLE step 2.......2000-06-27
This book will help medical students to test their knowledge on major topics of biostatistics, epidemiology, preventive medicine and public health. The explanations are of appropriate length and content. As an international medical graduate, I found the parts on the provision of health services and legal and ethical issues very useful. However, in my opinion, this book lacks an organized approach of each subject tested. Questions appear rather at random making it hard to perform a systematic review. In addition, I would not recommend this book for the preparation of the USMLE step 2 examination as preventive medicine is a low-yield topic in this examination and reviewing from this source is time-consuming and not that efficient. I also think most of the questions contained in this book and especially those on biostatistics do not reflect the style of the USMLE step 2 examination. There are few clinical vignettes whereas almost all questions in the USMLE step 2 examination are now of this type. In conclusion, this is a good book to test one's knowledge on biostatistics, epidemiology and preventive medicine and public health but it is not the best choice one could make while studying for the USMLE step 2 examination.
