Book Description

Written by Microsoft software legend Juval Lowy, Programming WCF Services is the authoritative introduction to Microsoft's new, and some say revolutionary, unified platform for developing service-oriented applications (SOA) on Windows. Relentlessly practical, the book delivers insight, not documentation, to teach developers what they need to know to build the next generation of SOAs.

After explaining the advantages of service-orientation for application design and teaching the basics of how to develop SOAs using WCF, the book shows how you can take advantage of built-in features such as service hosting, instance management, asynchronous calls, synchronization, reliability, transaction management, disconnected queued calls and security to build best in class applications. Programming WCF Services focuses on the rationale behind particular design decisions, often shedding light on poorly-documented and little-understood aspects of SOA development. Developers and architects will learn not only the "how" of WCF programming, but also relevant design guidelines, best practices, and pitfalls. Original techniques and utilities provided by the author throughout the book go well beyond anything that can be found in conventional sources.

Based on experience and insight gained while taking part in the strategic design of WCF and working with the team that implemented it, Programming WCF Services provides experienced working professionals with the definitive work on WCF. Not only will this book make you a WCF expert, it will make you a better software engineer. It's the Rosetta Stone of WCF.

Excellent book, it covers every thing you need to know about WCF. Have in mid that this book is not for begginers

5 out of 5 stars Great book on a big subject.......2007-09-05

Arguably, WCF is the most revolutionary development in current software trends. It may change completely technological landscape developers live and work in since the appearance of .NET platform.
Juval Lowy (once again!) has written an extraordinary book. Seemingly he has an absolute and complete knowledge on the subject.
What strikes me even more, is how carefull and lovingly Juval leads the reader through the forest of technical details to the deep and solid understanding of both underlying technology and practical implementation of WCF.
If after hours of reading you suddenly feel lost, all you have to do is go back half a page and you are on track again.
I just wish I had such a wonderfull teacher every time I have to learn something new.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to understand.......2007-09-03

Juval writes like a real educator. Where other books fails to explain in simple terms, Juval Löwy is very easy to understand. His book has a wonderful layout, which makes it easy to find what your are looking for.
Thank Juval.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must-Have" Book for Programming WCF.......2007-08-30

If you are going to use WCF in your enterprise applications, then this is the book you want to buy. We are converting our .NET 1.1 web services over to WCF and find this book to be absolutely essential. This is the stuff you can't glean from Internet posts. A truly irreplaceable knowledge builder and reference tool.

5 out of 5 stars Learn WCF the right way instead of piecmealing sub-standard techniques from bloggers........2007-08-28

I'm part of a middleware group and we are migrating to WCF. This book was just technical enough, concise and it has been very helpful in several cases. It's gotten me started and helped fill in the details where I needed it. Probably my favorite part, was the astute and very well reasoned description of Service-Orientation in Appendix A.

You're not going to waste your time reading fluff like so many other books.

Book Description

In such a business climate that demands a heightened understanding and keen ability to leverage essential technologies, one must understand every element of an agreement as critical and essential as the software user/vendor contract. As there has long been a disconnect between the express interests of the end user and the objectives of the vendor party in the developing, drafting and executing of such contracts, Software Agreements Line by Line serves to bridge this gap. Taking a standard agreement and breaking it down clause by clause, explaining the nuances of the language and the implications inherent there within, authors Michael Overly and James Kalyvas (partners at Foley & Lardner) present a comprehensive overview of a contract, detail how it can be manipulated, offer practical solutions to prevent against this and suggest ways in which it might be adapted to meet the needs of the end user. A never-before offered glimpse into the often daunting world of these highly-technical agreements, Software Agreements Line by Line highlights the often overlooked, unnoticed and even hidden aspects of authorizing, purchasing and leveraging such business-critical assets. The ability to understand and develop user-friendly software licenses and agreements offers unparalleled advantages for any company invested in, or making decisions around, purchasing software. This book will prove instrumental in rendering any reader an informed user, a more strategic thinker and above all, an empowered consumer.

4 out of 5 stars Not alot you don't know but good food for thought.......2005-07-13

If you've been around software much you won't really learn alot of new facts or specific details of legal terminology but Overly does have some good suggestions for how to conduct negotation over specific contract areas - indeminification, support, adding additional users - that were very valuable.

For large firm buyers Overly has some interesting ideas about standardizing the contract process and developing enterprise-wide "best practices" for writing re-useable software agreements.

3 out of 5 stars Great Content.......2004-10-27

Pros: Must read for software managers
It is definitely one of the best descriptions for software agreement that I could find. I would rate the content at 5 stars.

Cons: The quality of the paper and the print is extremely low.
The book is about 120 pages printed on "yellow" paper with relatively small font. You have the feeling that the printer that printed the book was running out of ink. When you open the book it is difficult to read in the middle. It looks more like a novel than a computer book...

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and on target.......2004-07-04

If you develop or evaluate RFPs, acquire software, or even are involved in contracting for services this book is an essential resource. I'll be frank about the readability - it's tough to plow through this book. The authors are terse and the writing style dense. However, when you consider a typical license agreement, contract terms and conditions and the stilted language associated with them, if you cannot deal with the writing style in this book you'll probably find contract and license evaluation ponderous as well.

I like the way this book presents information and advice by starting with a typical vendor agreement, then leading you through it, line-by-line as the title implies, and explaining the implications. It also shows how to modify each term or condition.

Another area I like is the chapter on software specifications and acceptance testing. I've worked with one client after another which licensed expensive software (in some cases to the tune of over a million dollars), or application services, without performing acceptance testing. The advice on this critical part of licensing is solid and should be carefully heeded. The chapter on maintenance and support covers another area that is too often overlooked in the acquisition process, and one that will almost certainly be important after the contract is signed. Again, carefully consider the advice in this chapter because it addresses a critical area. One final aspect of this book I like is Appendix A, which cross-references this book's chapters to vendor licensing provisions. This makes this book easy to use when evaluating licenses and contracts.

Take the time to read this book, then apply it to real world contracting and licensing and you will find yourself referring to it often.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Attorneys.......2004-06-10

I am a practicing attorney and I found this book extremely useful. Thanks to the authors for writing it.

5 out of 5 stars The Book to Read on Software Contracts.......2004-02-10

Having worked on hundreds of software contracts - from both a vendor and customer standpoint, I can honestly say this book would have made my life 100x easier throughout the years. I can not stress enough how valuable the content is in this book for anyone signing, or composing, a software contract. I guarantee this book will become "the industry standard" on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Viewpoint of a novice.......2007-01-10

I bought this book because I was to lead a group in developing an RFP but had no experience with RFP's. I don't know how this book will meet the needs of anyone with a lot of experience but I am extremely impressed by its readability, organization, and applicability. I'm still working on the project but have gotten good feedback on what I've developed, which I could not have done without the guidance and information in the book. It is logically sequenced and appears to cover all bases, though someone with a lot more experience would be better able to assess this. Impressed? Very.

5 out of 5 stars RFP Review.......2006-03-15

The book is an easy read and provides me with the needed understanding of developing an RFP and template.

5 out of 5 stars Resource and guidelines with a coherent approach.......2004-03-01

There are literally hundreds of good books on proposal writing, but only a tiny handful on writing RFPs. From among the handful this book stands out for a number of reasons:

(1) It clearly described the RFP process from start to finish - and RFP development is a process with a defined life cycle.

(2) The author goes well beyond the immediate objective of writing an RFP and managing the process by including thought-provoking material on post-award vendor management. This material sometimes escapes the RFP development team who is more focused on getting to the award milestone without thinking about the post-award ramifications.

(3) It's not boring - the writing is lively, and the material is presented at a fast pace. The pace, however, does not leave gaps. Every facet of the RFP process is covered in sufficient detail.

In addition to the above, the approach set forth in this book is consistent with best practices in RFP development. I especially like the copious checklists, the RFP roadmap, and the way illustrations are skillfully used to reinforce concepts and advice.

Note that the focus of this book is information technology and software acquisition. Some of the material is unique to those domains; however, the basic principles and RFP process can be used for virtually any type of RFP, from office services to purchasing furniture.

Overall, this is the one book I recommend for RFP development. If you are an IT professional, regardless of role, the chances are you will be involved in this process at some point in your career, making this book a valuable addition to your library. If you have recently been assigned to an RFP team you should get this book as soon as possible, and use it as your compass and blueprint if your organization does not already have a formal RFP process in place.

5 out of 5 stars Good Resource.......2003-05-13

A great resource for preparation and review of an RFP. A helpful guide for people with and without RFP experience.

5 out of 5 stars The RFP book that htelp me to do the job well done.......2003-01-04

I was in charge to define the RFP for a big imaging system project and this book gave me the tools to plan, supervise and create the RFP that point out the requirements, so the providers can easily develop the correct solution in their proposal.

This book is ahead. Has very good explanation (easy to read and understand), well structured and the examples are good to have a clear idea of the content that should have all the topic of the RFP. It gave me the tools to map the plan, the definition of the requirements and the development of the RFP document.

This book must be in any library.
