Book Description
The mechanics of lightness
Whereas some architects have a signature style, what sets Piano apart is that he seeks simply to apply a coherent set of ideas to new projects in extraordinarily different ways. "One of the great beauties of architecture is that each time, it is like life starting all over again," Piano says. "Like a movie director doing a love story, a Western, or a murder mystery, a new world confronts an architect with each project." This explains why it takes more than a superficial glance to recognize Piano's fingerprints on such various projects as the Pompidou Center in Paris (1971-77), the Kansai airport in Osaka, Japan (1990-94), and the Tjibaou Cultural Center in Nouméa, New Caledonia (1993-1998).
This stunning monograph, illustrated by photographs, sketches, and plans, covers Piano's career to date. Also included are sneak peeks at Piano's current projects, including the New York Times Tower, a 52-story skyscraper to be built in Times Square, and the 80-story London Bridge Tower, which is set to be Europe's tallest building.

Absoultely beautiful effort from one of the best!.......2006-11-04
...As a proffesional photographer and an avid architecture enthusiast, I look for extreme qualities in the books I purchase. I have had nothing but great luck with my purchases from publishing companies such as Phaidon, Taschen, and Rizzoli. Phillip Jodidio is also someone who has proved himself time and time again (the author of this book, among others). This book is absolutely gorgeous! It is one of the few books I had to buy without being able to look through it, but wow! And to think there is one of these on Tadao Ando and one forthcoming on my favorite Architect Santiago Calatrava?!?!
Anyhow, here are some details for you:
This book is slightly smaller than the Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture, which remains my favorite book to date. With that said, it's a little easier to hold on your lap, but best viewed on a table!
The photography is awesome...some of the photos take up two pages! - in fact, there is a center-foldout of the Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Center that takes up four pages!!!
There is enough text to fill you in on info, but the photography in this book really does the talking. You will also find a lot of sketches and some models from Mr. Piano.
Renzo Piano is one of my favorite architects, but if your cause is a love for architecture in general, I still have to recommend this book. Everything is well done, even the catologue of his complete work in the back.
The only drawback for me is that only certain pieces of his work are showcased - for example, the Ferrari wind tunnel is only mentioned in the rear catologue, not showcased in the book.
This book is well worth $125.00, in fact, in my opinion it's worth more than that! - After having this book, I am going to pick up the Tadao Ando and Santiago Calatrava books WITHOUT viewing them, that's what a good job this book did at selling me on those products!!
Ravishing Renzo.......2006-01-15
Renzo Piano is without a question one of the worlds greatest architects, his talent is singular, it's just awesome...as is this amazing book. It is THE book on Piano, and that is saying something because there are quite a few good books on the man and his work, but if you feel you can have just one on Renzo Piano then make it this one. The text is scholarly and highly informative and the images are just what you would expect in a book of this caliber..first rate. I often visit the Menil Collection here in Houston and never cease to marvel at how beautiful yet function it is, and that really is his genius. I recently visited his building for the Nasher Collection in Dallas and again was blown away at the elegance and beauty of the building, yet it works perfectly as a repository for Mr. Nasher's world class collection, it works on every level, as with the Menil, it is highly functional, yet beautiful. The two buildings could not be more different, but they both bare Mr. Piano's penchant for a building that works. It's not enough that the building is takes your breath away, it must also work and Renzo Piano understands this and as an admirer of great architecture and someone who appreciates function, thank you Mr. Piano. I highly recomend this beautiful book on this amazing talent.
Book Description
This is the fifth volume of the RENZO PIANO BUILDING WORKSHOP series, which features the complete works of Renzo Piano (b. 1937), one of the most acclaimed architects of his generation. Created in close collaboration with the architect, this book gives a detailed presentation of Piano's projects from the beginning of the twenty-first century, including the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, the Parco della Musica Auditorium in Rome, the London Bridge Tower, and Maison Hermes in Tokyo. The book's technical drawings and new photographs present a continuing discussion of the projects with an emphasis on innovation and structure.

Volume 2...not detailed...nor in depth...in between book.......2006-03-09
As much as I like Renzo Piano's works, he can learn something from Norman Foster to properly produce his set of books. These 4 editions are nice size (not heavy like Foster's) so you can bring to your job site or office if you want to show some examples. However, each building is not well documented. the plans have no measurements or too small to read, no scale, and the details are not complete enough. Simply, there are no coherent base of each buildings. Furthermore, the different editions sometimes cover the same building (ex.edition 3 covers Kansai Airport (perhaps too much), but it is also covered in edition 2.
Edition 2 seems to be a compilation of his works from the 80's but it is very difficult to figure out what exactly this book want to focus on. I recommend that Renzo Piano redo this whole editions of which he deserves.
Very, very enjoyable set of books.......2002-01-07
As a set this is a great achievement. The books are wonderfully produced with glorious photography, lots of drawings and sketches (both of larger structures and details), stylish typography and a clear, rhythmic page layout. It's a genuine feast to the eye. However, I was slightly disappointed by the first volume's first section, in which Buchanan sets the scene for all that is to follow by providing us some conceptual and genealogical background on Piano's art. Buchanan's lead essay is repetitive, diffuse, conceptually thin and strays too far from the substance of Piano's architectural practice. The section on the 'spirit of the workshop' is really a missed opportunity: instead of a detailed picture of the collaborative dynamics in this complex environment, we get a rather glossy account of Piano's role of 'scout, actor and editor' in the design process. The pages on 'early influences' again are rather sketchy, with brief references to a series of mentors and to the role of the Genuese cityscape on Piano's mental map. From then on the book takes wing: I was grateful for the inclusion of the work in the early Studio Piano, the Piano & Rogers venture (Pompidou Centre) and particularly of the fancyful, but fascinating experiments in the Piano and Rice period. It gives us an idea of the rather exploratory journey Piano had behind him by the time the Building Workshop was established (he was 44 then). Volume I then goes on to document the early years of the workshop. Generally this represents an inconspicuous beginning: we see a lot of fine craftsmanship but there is relatively little that takes your breath away in terms of architectural vision. Compared to the later designs, we see a modesty that is approachable, refreshing and invites careful study. With its mix of full page photographs and thumbnail pictures, sketches and plans, colours and greytones the book never tires. And this applies to the whole series. A laudable example of serious and effective book design! As a whole I have no reservations in recommending this set to anyone remotely interested in contemporary architecture.
Each Volume is SUPERB!.......2001-08-27
...This book along with the previous volume are Fabulous!. Great photo's/details/extensive information about each and every project. Bravo Peter on a great series. Volume 3, is a bit iffy. Even though it continues with the tradition of the other Volumes, it devotes approx half the book towards the kansai airport (which im not particularly fond of). Volume 4 is on the list, those of you in OZ already know about Auora Apartments, an apartment building designed as only the Piano Workshop know how. I'm glad the Piano virus has made its way to Down Under.....Lets just hope its catching! - Check it out.
What else would you expect........2001-08-27
What else would you expect.....a book full of fabulous buildings/details and information bound to inspire ANY student or architect. If your not inspired don't mention your name along with architecture in the same sentence. Truely a GREAT MASTER of the 20th and 21st Centuries.
AMAZING BOOK.......2000-07-26
When we talk about prices we should have in consideration that this is a high quality book for a little price, i think is really cheap. Advice: if you like Renzo Piano recent work, just buy it!

Small album with photos only.......2004-12-14
This small album at only 6.5 x 6.5 inches (16.5 x 16.5 cm) contains almost exclusively photos, but good ones. After book's Introduction, each of 22 main Piano's project is headed by a title page with a very simple, hand drawn sketch or two, followed by a page of text, and only full page or double page photos thereafter. At the end of book, there are a few pages with office personnel list, project credits, selected bibliography, prizes, etc., and small B&W photos of coworkers. This is a non-technical book without plans, sections, etc.

A thurough analysis of Renzo Piano's career.......2006-08-29
From the humble beginnings to the Ferarri projects of 2003, Emilio Pizzi depicts a broad range of Piano's works. Though the size of the book is limiting, the text is concise and represents a true understanding of the construction. The complex imagery and intimidating structural vocabulary of Piano are made more accessible in both German and English. Several elevation, perspective and plan layouts are presented along with details of more complex sections. Piano's ability to make accomodating structures that break the norm continues to make him one of the world's most famous architects.
Book Description
Renzo Piano (Genoa, 1937) studied architecture at the Polytechnic in Milan. Since winning the competition to design the Centre Pompidou in Paris (1971) along with Richard Rogers, Piano has become a prominent figure on the international architectural scene, with more works constructed outside Italy than in his own country. Piano brings a similar approach to both the small and the large scale. He has directed projects of very varying sizes: small buildings like the travelling IBN Pavilion and the Brancusi Museum; and great megastructures like Kansai's International Airport Terminal built on a man-made island in the Bay of Tokyo, and the remodeling of Berlin's Potsdamer Platz where work is scheduled to be completed in 2002.

Construction handbook in photos.......2004-12-14
Published by Rizzoli under ISBN: 0847811522 and 0847811247, it has 256 pages. Disappointingly, Centre Georges Pompidou is presented on a few somewhat depressing or irrelevant B&W photos and illegible tech. drawings with white lines on black background. A few more projects are shown in that manner. Many photos show everything except architecture (good for social studies), or were made too close to the object showing too little of it, or - too far showing too much sky or foliage, incl. most of the B&W ones. There are not many plans and sections, and mostly too small and/or simplistic (incl. hand drawn). Technical aspect of structure is overemphasized and dominates photos like in a construction handbook. The fabric of architecture - space proportions and composition is very scarce. There is a lot of empty paper.
Excellent introduction to Piano's works.......2004-09-22
This book covers virtually every project that Renzo Piano had worked on up until the time of the book's publication. It covers all of his built and unbuilt works, and then more. Did you know that he has designed a car and a ship? Although each project gets only a few pages, the drawings and text are concise and get right to the point. The best part of this book is that the text is in Piano's own words, so that the explanations and commentaries come straight from the source. In his text, he often emphasizes the importance of getting your design built and enjoying the process of building.
In addition to talking about each of his projects, he also discusses his own views at the beginning and end of the book on broad topics like the pursuit of architectural design and the architectural profession. This is particularly beneficial for architecture students and young people who want to know more about the field, and it seems like Piano probably had this in mind when he discusses his views.
The book is now a bit dated, for example late 1990's projects like the Tjibaou Cultural Center had not yet been completed and are presented here in mostly models, drawings, and early construction photos. However, it is still very useful because it offers a terrific first-person insight into one of the most respected architects of recent decades. I truly hope that they will update this excellent book someday, but for now I still recommend it to any Renzo Piano fan and anyone who is interested in architecture.
Excellent collection of Renzo Piano's works.......2000-06-25
Renzo Piano is one of the most important contemporary architects. Every design he conceives is specific to its location. Piano chooses not to attach himself to an image. His architecture reflects a clear understanding of climate, culture, and construction methods and materials, which work together in harmony to become a building of its own and not a trademark of the designer (such as the automatic association of Richard Meier and his white steel enamel panels).
A student of architecture should keep a library to refer to when coming across unresolved issues in designs. The Logbook by Piano is not only an excellent monograph of his works, but it also provides the architect's own insight for each design, which is more important than any interpretation a critic might have.
conceptually it is a good reference for architect.......1999-09-24
great all the time, the students of Archi.M'sia
It is a real history of the powerful of human imagination........1998-10-10
Not an history of architecture, but an exibithion of some ideas about life, showed by architecture. Renzo Piano shows himself by his work. Reading this book is quite as the same as listening Renzo that confidentially speaks about what is important in his life, and why. Architecture is, for him, the best way to express his ideas about education, politics, ethics and love. I definitely suggest it.

Book Description
