CD version of this classic chemical safety reference........1999-03-24
SAX's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials Ninth Edition-CD-ROM Version
The NST/Engineers, Inc. reviewer, an EPA First Responder, found the Ninth Edition of Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials-CD ROM version (SAX CD) to be a powerful database of easily retrievable, detailed, and pertinent information. The reviewer envisions the target users of the SAX CD deriving the most benefit to be: chemical operators, chemical process engineers, chemists, clinical toxicologists, fire companies, first responders, HAZMAT teams, industrial hygienists, plant managers, physicians, police departments, process safety managers, research professionals, risk management planners, safety engineers, transportation officers, and treatment storage and disposal facility (TSDF) personnel.
The 22,380 materials included are categorized at a minimum according to: Listing Name, Hazard Rating, Chemical Name, Molecular Formula, Molecular Weight, Chemical and Physical Properties, Synonyms, Toxicity Data with References, (instantly accessible by screen "pop-ups"), and Safety Profile.
Where available, NIOSH Recommended Exposure Limits, OSHA Permissible Exposure Levels, ACGIH Threshold Limit Values, (all expressed as Time Weighted Averages) and German MAK exposure limits are included. Consensus Reports (Community RTK, EPA TSCA and Genetic Inventory list) along with DOT hazard Classifications and UN/NA 4-digit identifier (for HM-181), CAS Registry number, and Class (carcinogen, mutagen, teratogen, primary irritant, food additive, etc.) are also included.
For forty years, NST/Engineers, Inc. personnel and associates have found editions of SAX to be an invaluable resource. The Ninth Edition on CD ROM provides the instant retrieval capabilities sought by the electronic communication age. The program includes an intelligent default, twelve-characteristic, search engine. It highlights each "hit" in the text and has a "tracking" system that allows the user to look forward or to "backtrack".
In the NST/Engineers, Inc. trials, SAX CD was used in "mock" HAZMAT spills. The reviewer found that the initial assessments of the spills were conducted many times faster by using the SAX CD. Armed with a laptop computer, as are most police and other emergency responders, the addition of this software will greatly decrease response time and reduce the confusion that routinely surrounds hazardous materials incidents. An increase in facility and public safety will be provided by the fingertip access to the knowledge base in the SAX CD .
The SAX CD works on both PC and Macintosh platforms.
Book Description
Dangerous Grains turns the U.S. Food Guide Pyramid upside down by exposing the myriad health risks posed by gluten grains (wheat, rye, barley, spelt, kamut, and triticale). The authors, leading experts in the field of food allergies, and celiac disease, present compelling evidence that our grain-centered diet is to blame for a host of chronic illnesses. Largely misunderstood and frequently misdiagnosed, these disorders can be prevented and reversed by the useful program outlined in this important new book.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, a must read.......2007-07-04
The book is a real shocker. Seems our government is more interested in profit for the food industry rather than tell us the truth about what wheat products and gluten does to us and our health. Its obvious the medical profession and the drug companies would rather not have us know the real truth. We must remember that doctors and drug companies like to treat the symptoms rather than the causes because there is no money in the cause portion. After the book I put myself on a wheat free diet and within 3 weeks I was able to come off the purple pill after being on it for 2 years because of acid reflux. I was paying over $[...] per month for 30 tabs-----No more. You got to read it.
Not At All Pleased.......2007-06-19
I bought this book as per my cousin's suggestion because Braly's theory sounded interesting. I absolutely agree with the Foreword when it says: It's undeniable that whole grains are good nutrition for some of us. The problem is that the author spends the next 180 or so pages talking himself out of it. There is NO DOUBT that celiac disease and gluten sensitivity are real and can be life-threatening--this book is for such sufferers. But to suggest, over and over again, that the huddled masses should go gluten-free, even though asymptomatic, is sliding down a slippery slope. Don't jump on the bandwagon without being fully informed.
I wish I had read this book years ago..........2007-04-12
I wish I had read this book years ago... Actually, I accidentally discovered that I was gluten-sensitive a few years before this book was published. I embarked on a low-carb diet -- but not all at once. I was keeping a very detailed food diary, and cutting down/out selected items gradually. Three days after I eliminated the last of the grains, my arthritis (which had forced me to stop playing my violin in public for 5 years!) completely disappeared. In the eight years that I have been avoiding gluten, the pain has not returned.
Prior to that, I went to several doctors, who placed me on drugs that didn't help, or gave me advice that was worthless -- one suggested that I see a shrink, because he couldn't find any reason for my pain, and therefore, he assumed that my pain was imaginary!
Going gluten-free was like stopping hitting myself on the head with a hammer. One other side-effect of my low-carb diet: I lost 100 lbs.
I hope that this book can finally lay to rest the myth that grains are good for you.
Gluten-free & Pain-free:.......2007-03-27
When I was 9, my grandmother called me into the bathroom to show me my 3 year old brother's frothy floating elimination...and told me that this was an indication that he was being fed too many starchy grains. My mother continued to feed him grains and he wound up with a quite a few health problems.
I rarely ate grains, because they made me gain weight; and the only time I ate them regularly was for a month in 1986 - and I wound up with arthritis symptoms; excruciating pain in my arms and shoulders; couldn't lift my arms above my shoulder level; and horrific pain in my joints, too. Being into health research - I didn't take medication.
I looked back in my food journal - and immediately stopped the grains.
Within two weeks the pain was gone. Three months later, as an experiment I added them back. In two weeks the same unbearable pain returned. So, I stopped using grains for good. At 73 I am still gluten-free & pain-free.
As a health researcher (46 years duration) - I found Dr. James Braly's Dangerous Grains - very worthwhile. It is a "must-read" for every family who is interested in health.
healthy book.......2007-01-10
my father was told to get this book by his doctor and it has proved to be quite helpful

Book Description
The Fifth Edition of Hazardous Chemicals Desk Reference contains Safety Profiles, synonyms, physical properties, standards, and recommendations of government agencies for approximately 5,000 chemicals deemed both important and potentially hazardous by the international scientific community. Substances were chosen on the basis of meeting a variety of criteria, including:
- Having an OSHA standard
- Having an ACGIH TLV
- Listed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer Groups
1 through 4 assessments
- Listed on the NTP Ninth Report on Carcinogens
- Having a German Research Society’s Mak or Bat listing
- Having especially dangerous toxic, reactive, or fire properties
The data for each entry is taken from the master file of DPIM. The Fifth Edition distinguishes itself from its predecessors by including the very latest information from a variety of international databases and organizations, while deleting entries that have proven to be the least pertinent to practitioners. Introduction to Toxicology, Third Edition
-
Silent Spring
ASIN: 0415311683 |
Book Description
Everyday, we come into contact with many relatively harmless substances that could, at certain concentrations, be toxic. This applies not only to obvious candidates such as asbestos, lead, and gasoline, but also to compounds such as caffeine and headache tablets. While the field of toxicology has numerous texts devoted to aspects of biology, chemistry, and mechanism of action, the need remains for a book that places toxicology within the framework of our daily lives. A Small Dose of Toxicology presents the principles of toxicology by exploring the effects of common chemical agents such as caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol. It reviews the fundamentals of dose-response and factors of individual sensitivity in regard to these drugs, and then applies this knowledge to environmental contaminates such as lead, arsenic, pesticides, mercury, and radiation. Chapters discuss neurotoxicology, risk assessment, carcinogenicity, and with a variety of specific toxic agents, with each chapter designed as a self-contained module to allow for flexibility in the selection of personal or academic material. Exploring current toxicology concerns within a human context, this text discusses how toxicology affects our everyday lives while providing insight into the broader issues of public health and disease prevention. Environmental and public health professionals, as well as novices and students requiring a basic foundation in toxicology will find this resource incredibly useful.
Customer Reviews:
Small Dose- but large information.......2004-12-28
Steven Gilbert, Ph.D., DABT has compiled a user-friendly book of toxicology that has utility in beginner and advanced courses of the toxicology field. It is layman friendly and selectively includes toxic product hazards of everyday life. The common chemicals include alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, pesticides, lead, mercury, arsenic, heavy metals, solvents and radiation for starters; all products of human ingestion, inhalation or dermal absorption in everyday life. In simple terms and understandable paragraphs that are digestible, one learns of the dangers to human exposure. The additional reference lists at the end of each subject enhances the ability of one to research issues further. Government agencies that can assist the reader are also presented. Toxicology is literally "the science of poisons" and is often one of the "heaviest" curriculum/ biological subjects. "A Small Dose" allows the reader to enjoy the subject matter and still learn the issues at hand in the new millennium. Dr. Gilbert makes it palatable...Thank you! He was awarded a commendation in 2004 from the British Medical Association Library book competition- a most prestigious award.
Customer Reviews:
Amusing and interesting.......2005-12-27
Obviously, there is more to anthropology than simply going to some faraway land and relating tales about one's experiences there. But there's nothing wrong with doing just that, as Nigel Barley does in this book. He starts right out, in the first sentence, by saying that "Anthropology is not a hazardous sport." Anyway, he goes off to Indonesia (actually, to Torajaland, on the island of Celebes) to live, um, non-hazardously.
An incident typical of the author's misadventures comes when some of the people he's visiting decide they need to consecrate a new rice barn with blood. They plan to sacrifice a pig to do this. But when they ask him to pass them a machete, he cuts his fingers badly on it. So badly that his blood suffices; they don't need to sacrifice a pig after all.
I enjoyed this book, and I recommend it.
Funny and Informative.......1999-12-31
I am a student of African and Indonesian spiritual practices. This book, along with Mr. Barley's others, is a refreshing departure from long-winded, ivory-tower lectures. Funny and informative.
Anthropologist in Indonesia.......1999-11-28
Nigel Barley is an English antropologist who makes a visit to Torajaland in Sulawesi, Indonesia. He says in his foreword that he want to tell the stories that more traditional antropological books don't tell. The result is sometimes funny but otherwise not very remarkable.
