Book Description
Updated with a new verb list, more vocabulary, more key phrases, and expanded exercise sections, this book offers English-speaking doctors, nurses, and medical assistants some basic Spanish vocabulary to help them deal with Hispanic patients who speak little or no English. The book starts with pronunciation tips and offers advice on listening comprehension with special focus on words and phrases that are likely to be used in a medical setting. True-to-life dialogues recreate situations involving pregnancy, broken bones, pediatric care, heart and lung diseases, geriatric care, communicable diseases, drug problems, medical treatment of crime victims, and more.

Worth every penny!.......2006-04-06
My wife bought this book for me, and it was a Godsend. Chapter lessons are bite sized and arranged in logical/relational order; interpersonal phrases, cultural issues, admission, discharge, fundamental anatomy, hygiene issues, medication issue, etc.
In addition to these categories the book immediately teaches word pronunciation and basic sentence construction...in English sentence format. Perhaps this may sound backwards to a Spanish-speaking listener/patient; however, my message was immediately understood and acknowledged.
Bottom line, this book is an excellent jump off point for someone (like me) serving a high volume of Spanish-only speaking patients.
A great Book!.......2006-03-05
I'm other language challenged but this book makes picking up and using Spanish in my role as an RN easy and effective.
Wonderful for beginners.......2006-03-01
This book has become invaluable in my ER setting. We have a small Hispanic population which is growing with more Spanish speaking patients. This book helps with basic Admission questions and follows up with easily understood medical questions. Would recommend highly.
Spanish for Healthcare Professionals.......2005-07-28
The book is a good tool for getting a non spanish speaker up and running with the language.
Medical Social Worker says, "Thank you!".......2004-09-08
This book is extremely practical for my interactions with spanish-speaking patients. I work at a hospital and we see a large number of Hispanic/Mexican-American individuals. This book has been IMMEDIATELY applicable and helps me to be more effective. Patients appreciate my obvious effort even though my pronunciation and grammer isn't perfect! Thank you to William Harvey for writing a book applicable to ALL types of healthcare professionals, including social workers.

Surprisingly good.......2007-01-26
I was not expecting this book to be so helpful. This book breaks down medical terms into root words. This means that as long as you know the root, you will be able to understand new medical terms (even if they are not in the book!). I was surprised how much I learned from this book. It has excellent coverage of all fields of medicine. The book has flashcards, but the real strength is the practice exercises. I sometimes refer back to the book (instead of a dictionary) because it tells you why the word is used. This book is good for anyone wanting to learn some medical terminology on their own. The chapters are manageable; I was able to work through all of the exercises in a month.

Book Description
This text teaches medical terminology by familiarizing students with how medical terms are formed and by providing a systematic learning structure. The first three chapters of the text introduce how medical terms are formed and the major word parts from which many of the terms are formed. Chapters 4 through 16 are the body systems chapters. The remaining chapters cover additional medical terminology.
Book Description
This handy reference gives health professionals the basic tools needed to communicate with Spanish-speaking patients. Vocabulary lists and sample dialogs address situations commonly encountered in hospitals, clinics, physician's offices, or outpatient and community centers. It familiarizes readers with common words and phrases through consistent repetition and demonstrates how they are used in conversation. Questions that can be answered with a "yes" or "no" response are emphasized, designed to facilitate communication in emergency situations where rapid responses are needed. Pronunciations are provided both in the text and on an accompanying CD-ROM.

Great aid for the Health Care Professionals.......2005-08-13
This book was an immediate help to be able to begin the vitals and check in process. It is not a know all/do all, but it does help a lot.
OK.......2004-05-15
The book was so-so. I've studied several languages before, including spanish, and I'm not convinced the usage is correct throughout the book. If I had a choice, I would not purchase this book again, but I think it will help increase my vocabulary, if nothing else.
I think they are reading the book as they go (on the CD).......2004-04-01
Great idea, a bit sloppy in execution (you can hear them turning pages as they go through the book, editting is choppy, sounds like a cassette (inherent hiss) but is on CD.
In spite of these, so far it seems to me the content is good, and the "rough edges" on the CD are easily overlooked. I'm slowly learning Spanish, and I'm sure this will help me with my health care related vocabulary.
Botton line: So so quality, but content is there. Would have expected a more polished product from such a large publishing firm.
Order and quality a bit questionable..........2001-05-30
I have spent more time listening to the audio tape and given that I do so in my car w/o the book to accompany it, I found the order of the tape to be most confusing. As a fairly good Spanish speaker already, it was confusing to have the section go from "basic" Spanish such as numbers or colors to rather detailed instructions for performing a physical inquiry or exam back to "basic" items. There seemed to be no logical order (again, not using the book in conjunction) to the sequence of the tape. Additionally, I found the quality of the tape lacking where the words were inaudible as if recorded in a tunnel. I was hoping for a clear pronunciation of many of the medical terms which did not exist.
I cannot comment on the book as I have not yet "tackled" this based on my experience with the tape.
All in all, the words and phrases are present and will help if you are brave enough and have the time to invest in listening and reading start to finish.
Now I'm a nurse who can speak Spanish!.......2000-07-28
As a telephone advice nurse, I wanted a resource to help me with medical vocabulary plus Spanish grammar and conversation. This book delivers on both. It is well-organized into chapters that cover various areas of health care, so you can pick and choose quickly what you need to know. Chapters include everything from A - admitting a patient, to Z - well X, for x-ray. There are several illustrations of the body with the Spanish names of parts dissected as specifically as "eyelash," "tibia," and "fibula." (A similar publication, "An Introduction to Spanish for Health Care Workers; Communication and Culture" has illustrations, too, but they are less-descript.) There are chapters on numbers, time of day, food and meals, common expressions, and family-relationship names (eg. aunt, father-in-law). English pronunciation accompanies every word, phrase and sentence. For the more-adventurous, there are grammatical chapters that cover nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs, but thankfully they're not as complex as to discuss "past imperfect," "present subjectives" and the like. There is an informative section on culture, and finally an English-to-Spanish word index. It accomplishes the objectives that I required.

Customer Reviews:
What is the mission?.......2007-08-13
This book starts out as though it is meant for beginners. It explains how every letter in Spanish is pronounced. Now anyone who knows even a little Spanish knows that, unlike English, the spelling is phonetic. Once you know the rules, you can read Spanish out loud and pronounce everything correctly. Nonetheless, this book has this sort of thing throughout: "Usted me comprende, ¿verdad? oos THETH meh kohm PREHN deh, vehr THAHTH." Indeed an idiot's guide, so it would seem.
It has long lists of diseases, body parts, medical procedures, etc., which are useful to memorize. But if you try to memorize the sentences given by looking at the English, covering up the Spanish, and trying to see if you can say the Spanish, you run into big trouble. The reason is that the sentences are so loosely translated.
Let me give a few examples.
"You must eat small, frequent meals," one would think would be, "Debe comer comidas pequeñas y frecuentes." But they translate is as
"Sus comidas deben ser pequeñas y frecuentes," which is literally, "Your meals should be small and frequent."
"Are you troubled by excessive worry about your health?" is translated as "¿Se preocupa excesivamente por la salud?" which is literally, "Do you worry excessively about your health?"
I could give at least a hundred more examples of ridiculously loose translation, guaranteed to confuse the beginner and annoy the more advanced student.
