Fantastic book on an interesting subject........2007-05-31
This book has to be one of the best primary source collections for the field of Medical Anthropology. Illustrates many of the themes running through the heart of the field fabulously, although it could have been organized better. Highly recommended.

Book Description
This book provides an in-depth and very modern approach to clinical social work with clients in mental health settings.
This is a revision of a book originally titled Clinical Social Work Practice in Community Mental Health. The "community mental health" approach is now dated, and this revision features "behavioral" mental health, which is a newer and "postmodern" approach. The postmodern perspective is client-oriented, and helps the practitioner to be aware of underlying biases. This perspective is explained in Chapter 1 and is included in every chapter by featuring clients' "voices," particularly at the beginning and end of the chapters. Important new topics include managed care and measurement of outcomes, both of which are woven throughout and featured in Chapters 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, and 13.
For social work practitioners specializing in mental health.

Introduction to Biomedical Equipment Technology (4th Edition)
ASIN: 0675209439 |
Book Description
Pennsylvania State University, Wilkes-Barre. Textbook for biomedical equipment technologists and technicians.
Customer Reviews:
Good introduction for Biomedical Engineering Technology.......2000-04-23
Biomedical Engineering Technology aims to educate future professionals that will work with medical equipment ensuring their correct calibration and safety.
This book is an excellent introduction to this profession at the same time that provides a good overview of the basic measurement principles and techniques. The book covers important issues such as safety, transducers and the analysis of the main pieces of medical equipment.
However, the book does not go in-depth into the details of the medical instrumentation. Some of the topics analyzed in the book, such as oscillators, power amplifiers, etc.,, can be found in any general electronics book and their space could be better used by more detailed explanations focused on medical equipment.
Nevertheless, Aston's book is a good introduction to the field.

Book Description
This is a title acquired from Jones & Bartlett. It includes important and influential academic articles from all perspectives within the abortion debate, abridged versions of the most important Supreme Court decisions, and critiques of Roe vs. Wade.
Customer Reviews:
Essential reading for those interested in the debate........1999-05-04
"The Abortion Controversy" (second edition) is a superb anthology in which all the major viewpoints on abortion are well represented.
Highlights include Michael Tooley's latest formulation of his argument against foetal personhood, Judith Jarvis Thomson's classic "A Defense of Abortion", David Boonin-Vail's brilliant 1997 defense of what he calls the "Responsibility Objection" to Thomson's argument, and Keith Pavlischek's interesting 1998 critique of Thomson and Boonin-Vail. Pavlischek essentially admits that Boonin-Vail's arguments succeed, but points out (correctly, I think) that those arguments entail that if a woman becomes pregnant to a man who wishes to play no part in the child's life, then that man, the father, is not morally obliged to pay child-support to the mother. Pavlischek thinks that many pro-choicers would find this implication unacceptable. I would add that on the other hand, many pro-choicers would regard this implication as perfectly just, so that Boonin-Vail's defense of Thomson is (for them at least) ultima facie sound.
These are just some of the interesting issues covered in the book; there are many more. Since no other anthology is as wide-ranging, up-to-date and authoritative as this one, "The Abortion Controversy" is essential reading for anyone who is interested in the philosophical debate over abortion.

Book Description
Written in an intriguing narrative format, this book demonstrates the skills necessary for effective social work practice in managed care settings. Centered around the case study of a professional ballet dancer who is admitted to a rehabilitation unit following a cerebral stroke, Good But Not Perfect follows the struggles of the patient and her health care team as they confront changes in the health care delivery system. This story-line approach engages the interest of the reader as it demonstrates the application of theories and the real-life impact of the managed care model.
At the end of each chapter, the story is analyzed using conceptual knowledge, and critical thinking is encouraged in practice exercises. Throughout the book, readers are guided through the processes of effective patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, discharge, and rehabilitation. They will learn the issues surrounding managed care and will be provided with the skills necessary to function as part of an interdisciplinary health care team.
For anyone interested in social work or managed health care.
Customer Reviews:
Dilemmas of managed care -an entertaining read!.......2001-06-19
Listen folks, if you are a social worker, physician, pharmacist or physical therapist or nurse in hospitial practice, or if you teach one of the health professions, this is a must-read. Although written by health care social workers, the material is relevant to anyone in interdisciplinary (or multidisciplinary) health care pactice. The authors present the experience of a "case", an appealing person whose traumatic accident interrups her career and her marriage. Parallel to this tale, is the saga of the health care team working with her. The reactions of the team to the crises of transitioning to managed care are similar to those of the patient. (Teams experience denial, anger, bargaining, and resistance on their way to adaptation, just like individuals.) It's clever and it has the ring of real life. Although much of the material is written like a novel, the purpose of the book is to instruct; introductory and closing chapters are serious discussions of the history and dilemmas of managed care, with upbeat prescriptions for the future; each chapter includes analysis of the material, questions for discussion, and exercises to bring home the teaching points. I am a faculty person in a graduate school of social work, and our students love it. I read it just for the pleasure of its literary craft and for its insight and information.

Book Description
This excellent text brings together information that students and professionals working in the wide variety of disciplines concerned with international health will find in no other single source. It synthesizes historical, cultural, environmental, economic and political considerations to provide a comprehensive global overview of the many factors that determine the health of individuals and populations. The major determinants of health status in all regions of the world are discussed, and interventions undertaken at community, national, and international levels are described. For this edition, new chapters on health management information systems and health sector reform have been added. There are new discussions of structural adjustment; the global burden of disease; application of the disability adjusted life year (DALY); poverty, equity and health; disaster and refugee relief programs; aging populations; and development, resource use, and the environment. The entire text has been updated, including the sections on child health, women's and reproductive health, maternal mortality, and emerging infectious diseases. International organizations, their policies and programs are reviewed. Trends in foreign aid, such as sector-wide approaches are highlighted. There is extensive coverage of the basic models of health care systems and their variants with an analysis of changes in the former Soviet Union and reunified Germany.
Customer Reviews:
An easy read for those not in the public health field.......2006-03-24
Ok..So, I HAD to read this for a graduate level elective course. For a political science student, I can say that this is a relatively easy read. Although, explanations of some of the international structures are almost farcical. The book progresses from ancient public health to contemporary which is quite interesting. With a caution, near the middle of the book some terms are not explained as easily, they are merely stated. This is a rather good book but if you are looking to understand American public health-you need an additional book. This book is very expensive, but at least it is filled with content.
a poor book for undergraduate and graduate students.......2001-08-22
this book does not fit into an undergraduate program. it is much to detailed and quite boring for the undergraduate and most graduate students. this book has content but no deliverance for the masses to comprehend.
it is a good resource book but a poor text book for the university undergraduate or graduate. jemery
Outstanding, comprehensive overview of International Health.......1999-10-01
Paul Basch's new edition of his Textbook of International Health is a winner! It features a readable style, a comprehensive perspective, timely factual information, and a fascinating historical background of health problems and the multitude of issues and efforts, past and present, to improve the health of populations. Must reading for any and all who plan to work within the health sector of countries in the developing world and for those who seek to understand and appreciate the many determinants which impact the health of a population.
The final section provides insights of importance to anyone considering short or long term work in the health sector of developig countries.
