3 out of 5 stars Not all that........2007-01-28

Well, another hyped up child custody/divorce manual that has been drastically over-rated by a few readers. What caused me to give this book at three star? Well it does have plenty of content. Kind of like when you go to a book store or library. How many of the books in there are you going to want to read? Maybe ten percent of them at best. Well this book will probably have ten percent of which may be possible to use in your court cases, and actually have it become applicable and useful to the reader. Another big problem I had with it was that the suggestions and information that the book was advising were too vague for it's readers, especially those involved in a custody battle. So many things in the book were way too generalized for the reader to be able to know how to precisely use them as effective tools. In essence, kind of when you read a horoscope, it's way too generalized to even know how and what makes this work. Also the book had the usual bias slant and actually gave much more advice to women going through child custody problems than it did fathers. The book seemed to focus more on how to legally screw over the father more by the mother than visa versa. Another drawback to the book is that it is very disorganized. There is really no order to it. It would of helpful if perhaps there were a chronological order to the advice using topics and subtopics relating to how events usually occur in pre/during/post divorce. It basically is a mumble-jumble and conglomeration of patches that were inserted while editing the book that say a lot, but say nothing useful. Authority and precedence is what is needed to be established in a family court. That is what a judge wants. The court cases that are mentioned in the book are relevant to the issue being referenced therein, but rarely apply to a lot of the situations that a father is going through. There are requirements that have to be meet while using a past court case that was established as precedence to be used. The only way to get applicable court cases for precedence is to use state family law books that are found at a law library. This book would be okay for a "quick read" at a bookstore.

4 out of 5 stars Good resource.......2007-01-18

This was a good resource for someone going through custody battles. I would recommend it to anyone, but would also mention the fact that there were more misspelled words, typos, major lack of editing issues than any other book I've ever read. WOW. But, the content makes up for this gross neglect. Still, for the price I paid for this book, I did expect better from the editing...

5 out of 5 stars 10 Star Resource.......2006-12-13

Someone gave me a 1994 edition of this book at the start of my divorce and custody dispute. It was a better resource book than anything else at the Baker & Taylor Bookstore. When I found the 11th edition it was double the price of the 3rd edition and quadrupel the information. I am so greatful for the new book and it is again better than anything else available, even on Amazon. I read it for the information and because it is interesting. I appreciate seeing examples of reports and studies before I have to face them myself. Win Your Child Custody War, also helps me keep a healthy prespective on what is going on in my life because I can see what others have dealt with. I have used the letters and examples and they really made a positive difference. A great living, breathing piece of work and an outstanding reference!

5 out of 5 stars Great information, Easy to read, Well organized.......2006-04-28

Remarkable. Because each case is so different it would be useless to present this information in any other form.

5 out of 5 stars 5 star easy! Highly recommended for its priceless content!.......2006-03-31

I wish someone would have recommended this book at the start of my divorce and custody dispute. This book is by far the best resource book for custody disputes and surviving a divorce. At first glance one would think that it is a bit expensive. However, once you receive it you will be thankful that you did. You could combine numerous other books in this genre and they would not compare to this single book. This book goes in depth without losing the reader. You will find yourself referencing it throughout your divorce and/or custody dispute. Chapters include: 1) Strategies to win custody 2)False Allegations 3)Evidence documentation 4)Grandparents 5)Hiring a detective 6)Rights during visitation 7)Parental Alienation Syndrome 8) Conflict resolution 9)DNA Testing 10)Case Law and so much more! 640 plus pages. An incredible resource worth every penny! Robert Pedersen founder of www.fatherachildsright.org

Book Description

Ralph Nader is known for his lifetime of progressive activism and fearless critique of corruption in American politics and society. Yet in this fresh and inspiring new book, Nader takes a look backward–at a serene and enriching childhood spent in bucolic Winsted, Connecticut, and at the traditions he absorbed within his family. From listening to learning, from patriotism to argument, from work to simple enjoyment, Nader revisits seventeen traditions he learned from his parents, his siblings, and the people in his community, and draws from them inspiring lessons for today's society. Blending memoir and thoughtful inspiration, Nader offers readers a chance to look back on a time in American history when the family and the natural world were central in a child's understanding of how to be a conscientious adult.

Among the seventeen traditions he celebrates:

•The Tradition of Listening

•The Tradition of Charity

•The Tradition of Civics

•The Tradition of Work

•The Tradition of Patriotism

•The Tradition of Simple Enjoyment

In his warmest and most personal writing to date, Nader fondly describes his father's restaurant business and how it taught him about work, community and how to share in the spirits of others; the value of his mother's ethnic cooking and how it defined his relationship with his heritage, and the hours he spent as a child wondering through the undeveloped forests of Connecticut where he learned the value of solitude. In doing so, he reawakens our own memories of the blessings of a simpler time–and of the enduring values of family, community, and love that gave him the courage to lead a meaningful life.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nader's World.......2007-09-04

Before fast food, fast commuting, IM-ing and countless other electronic distractions, there was Nader's World. He grew up in a little town in northwest Connecticut, where traditions were passed down, people listened to each other, families not only ate dinner together but enjoyed one another's company afterward, the sidewalks were in greater use, hitchhiking was safe, and public service was honorable. This reflection by Ralph Nader explains the roots of his passions: independent thinking, involvement in civic affairs, and insistence on fairness and social justice. He was raised in a loving, nurturing family, where his parents taught by example and used proverbs and Socratic questioning to stimulate the intellectual curiosity of Nader and his siblings.

In contrast to his more cerebral writing, this book is quite readable. I read the whole thing in a couple of hours this Labor Day. Its format is inspirational - albeit with some Tuesday's-with-Morrie-like schmaltz along with Emersonian wisdom - touching emotional chords and revealing a side of Ralph Nader that political pundits often miss.

5 out of 5 stars Ralph Nader's Bridge To A Past Not Dominated By Commerical Entertainment.......2007-08-24

The author of this book succeeds here on several levels. First, Ralph Nader explains himself well: who he is, and how he got to become who he is.

Second, the author explains how growing up in a low-media, high intensity household gave him lifelong advantages, insights, and commitments--things he might not have had he been enmeshed in movies, television shows, video games, rap music, etc.

Third, the author details the family traditions from Lebanese parents that were especially useful to him during his 45 years or so of national leadership of various causes.

Fourth, the author provides a warm evocation of a Christian Arabic family that can aid in improving understanding of Arab speaking people in and outside the United States.

The seventeen traditions that the author discovers in mining his family history are the traditions of listening, the family table, health, history, scarcity, sibling equality, education and argument, discipline, simple enjoyments, reciprocity, independent thinking, charity, work, business, patriotism, solitude and civics. These are traditions, he demonstrates, that his family lived, not just ideals that they mouthed.

Had this book been published the year before the 1992 Presidential election, when the author was toying with seeking the Democratic Presidential nomination, he could well have been a serious candidate for that nomination and changed both his political future and the direction of our country. Without pretentiousness, it shows him to be a man of depth, understanding and roots in small-town America.

The author sketches memorable portraits of his restaurant-owner and politically outspoken father; his wise, loving, and community active mother; his older brother, an attorney and community college founder; his sisters, Ph.Ds with enviable records of scholarship and academic leadership; his nephew, who has a doctorate and ecology, and two nieces, a lawyer and a Ph.D. in infectious diseases. The author certainly has a family committed to education and the welfare of us all.

Elements of the author's crusading zeal are submerged but very much present here. He refers to "these times of widespread conformity and self-censorship." Speaking of his hometwon of Winsted, Connecticut, he notes that "The air and the water became clearer after the factories closed, but the toxic soils and hollowed-out remained, economic tripwires to any new development in the area."

"Today," the author notes, "children everywhere are deprived of expsoure to nature in the same way (as only big city children used to be); they grow up with their eyes, ears, tastes and other senses trained on a corporate world of sensual visual reality--removed, as no generation in human history, from the daily flow and rhythm of history."

The book jacket notes that author was recently named by the Atlantic magazine as one of the 100 most influential figures in American history. This customer reviewer does not dispute that rating and hopes that the author will continue finding ways to speak out and positively influence the American social and political debate.

5 out of 5 stars try not to finish it in one day.......2007-08-10

it is a brilliant book... book that "teaches you to think not to believe" Mr. Nader's life is full of wisdom so are his parents'. I usually don't write reviews but for this one, I could afford not to. you can't read this book and not relate it to something in your life... sometimes you feel that he is talking about you, your life and your family... it is great read...

5 out of 5 stars Better days, renewed possibilities.......2007-07-21

Family and civic culture that is refreshing, basic, simple, important -- and largely disappeared. Family, community, and teaching by example and participation before greedy 'me' generation individualism when pleasure was being part of community and world beyond just yourself. It seems all too distant and foreign but should not be. This is a book to restore values, inspire young families, and shame an older generation that has lost its principles. You will get a chuckle or two such as the description of the author's mother and her confrontation with GW's grandfather. Get it, share it, circulate it widely. (It took ne less than a day to read.)

3 out of 5 stars Above all, a Paean to Good Parenting.......2007-07-19

Love him or hate him, there's no denying Ralph Nader is a true believer, and is committed to realizing his version of how to make the world a better (mostly safer) place. 17 Traditions is the explanation why. Principles such as Patriotism, Independent Thinking, Charity, and Civics encapsulate the lessons that contributed to Nader's tremendous work-ethic and ability to think critically, instilled in him by a solid, civic-minded upbringing in a tightly knit family. 17 Traditions is an easy read, and Nader has a pleasant narrative voice, even when channeling Whitman or Thoreau (his descriptions of his childhood environment get a little too flowery in spots).

Nader was taught at an early age to respect his elders, to challenge authority when appropriate, and not to take tangible and intangible gifts for granted. In his words, he "had a lucky choice of parents," for whom his affection and love shines through on every page. Nader touts the virtues of a healthy family life, and recognizes that strong, dedicated parenting can solve an awful lot of society's ills, including overdependence on the government. I couldn't agree more. Some of the concepts are outdated, to be sure, and I wish Nader had suggested how to apply Happy Days-era mores and behaviors to today's society; nothing wrong with aspiring to traditional values, though. A brave stance from a progressive guy.

As convincing as he was while generally bemoaning the outsourcing of family services to the market, however, I was less sold on some of the specific lessons imparted to him by his parents. I found at times that Nader's reverence for his folks clouded his ability to critically parse their good advice from the bad.

Nader's mom came off as a killjoy for seizing every event in her kids' childhood as an opportunity for instruction; 17 Traditions is at its most preachy when recounting her tutoring. And while Nader's dad seemed like a smart man and model citizen, he had some cockamamie ideas that weren't necessarily worth recounting, like setting up a "retirement island" for former dictators, to force them out of power and into (an idyllic, cushy) exile; and advocating a national economy premised upon unlimited income but limited wealth (he favored levying exorbitant taxes on personal savings above one million, thinking that it would encourage charitable giving instead of massive accumulation). Lastly, Nader's father, a Lebanese immigrant, gently complains throughout the book about the United States, supposedly out of love (he claimed he spent his time trying to improve his country, and "worked hard to make it more lovable"). I found that odd, and thought that true love, for country or other, is evidenced by satisfaction with the status quo. Try telling your spouse the reason he should lose 20 pounds is because you love him so much.

I most agreed with Nader's traditions of Simple Enjoyment and Scarcity (i.e., frugality), and give the man credit for practicing what he preaches. He appears to be one of simple means who maintains a thrifty lifestyle and shuns wanton consumerism, enabling him to realize value in the simple things and to give charitably to others. Egregious consumerism and the corporations that contribute to the "gimme society" are the bases for a lot of the litigation Nader has engendered (especially in the field of product liability), which in my opinion was initially well-intentioned but has spiraled out of control. An overly litigious society is every bit as pernicious as a hyper-consumptive one.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Treatment of Family Wealth Topics.......2007-09-28

I really enjoyed this book. It's a great treatment of key issues facing families transitioning significant wealth across generations.

This is not a tedious discussion of dry, technical strategies requiring an LLM in taxation to understand. Rather, it is an analysis of ways to maximize the long-term positive impacts of wealth on a family while minimizing the negative ones.

While this book would be a helpful read for anyone concerned about leaving heirs more than just money, I think families with estates over $5MM would find some of the advice most directly applicable to the challenges they face.

5 out of 5 stars Family Wealth - Keeping it in the Family.......2007-02-16

As an advisor, preparing for my first Family Meeting, I found this more helpful than most other books on Family Governance. I really liked the way in which it talks about not just financial capital, and social capital, but human & intellectual capital as well. It resonated well with me and with my Family Office clients. It gives more of a structure for developing the governance model than other books I've seen.

5 out of 5 stars Immensely valuable for members of a family business.......2007-01-03

Chapter 1 applied most directly to my situation, and this chapter alone makes the book worth having on my shelf. Hughes' perspective, from both his own family and his experience advising other families, gives the book authority.

Often family wealth seems to be treated as a "dirty little secret" where money concerns trump people concerns. Hughes provides a framework where financial, human, and intellectual assets can all be considered. He shows that family wealth can be a path towards growth of individuals, families, and their wealth, through investments, philanthropy, and professional development.

Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Hands on, long term familiy peace.......2006-08-19

I profound and comprehensive book on long term principles and practices to preserve family wealth (human an financial).
A must reading for medium family businesses.

5 out of 5 stars Addresses issues of significant importance in the wealth management process.......2006-08-18

As principal of a financial planning and wealth management firm, I highly recommend this book for families who have acquired wealth and want their children and future generations to be concerned about their human, intellectual and social development in addition to the growth of their financial resources.

Family Wealth does a good job of addressing issues of importance to wealthy families such as the need to create and establish mission statements, plan for family governance and how to create a mutually rewarding relationship with trustees and financial advisors.

As someone with practical experience in planning and/or supervising all aspects of a client's financial planning needs with the goal of protecting and enhancing retirement assets and estates, I especially like the emphasis by Hughes on the need for long-term thinking and how personal and intellectual development is just as important as financial decisions in the family organization.

This book has added a new dimension to our multi-disciplined practice. Along with our principal specialty, retirement income and retirement plan distribution strategies, we now help our clients think of ways to use their financial capital to nurture and enhance their human and intellectual capital.

    Book Description

Addressing a significant void in the extant literature on the topic of domestic violence, Rural Woman Battering and the Justice System presents a thorough and arresting look at the experiences of battered women in rural communities. While living in the rural areas of Kentucky, Neil Websdale conducted his ethnographic research, and he situated the voices of rural battered women at the center of his ethnography. He clearly demonstrates how rural patriarchy and the insidious "good ol’ boy network" of law enforcement and local politics sustain and reproduce the subordinate, vulnerable, isolated position of many rural women. Taking into account that traditional patterns of intervention can often put women in isolated communities at further risk, the author recommends a coordinated multiagency approach to rural battering that is spearheaded by state feminist agencies. The chapter on the difficulties of an educated male researcher working with rural battered women offers a definite methodological plus. Illuminating and accessible, Rural Woman Battering and the Justice System makes a most important and timely contribution to the field.

An excellent training resource for anyone working with battered women, especially in rural areas, Rural Woman Battering and the Justice System is highly recommended for law enforcement and criminal justice professionals, practitioners, advocates, shelter personnel, and advanced students in related courses of study, as well as academics and researchers.

I read The Secrets of Attraction, by Sandra Anne Taylor and decided to attempt to put into practice what I had learned in theory using the wisdom of the law of magnetism, insights into universal laws and paradoxical intent.

I created some affirmations and re-directed some of my emotionally charged energy away from disappointment and toward my newly created goals, as well as creating a manifestation journal to document the results.

    Well, I am pleasantly surprised.

My manifestation journal is becoming filled with new-found abundance and prosperity that I have been attracting into my life and I am well on my way to positive, progressive, life transformation.

A must read and highly recommended!

This book is terrific. Although Ms. Taylor offers many concepts that are offered in other self improvement books, her way of weaving together positive moral guidance and a system of ethics offers a fresh perspective that is very motivating, particularly in the way she ties in the concept of the universe giving us what we send it through our behavior and attitudes.

    5 out of 5 stars Sound Advice.......2007-02-12

Sandra Taylor, a practicing psychologist, delves into the science of success with this well-written insight into the world of universal law and how it may be used to change your relationships, and improve the romance in your life. Laws such as the Law of Magnetism, Law of Attraction, and Law of Pure Desire have achieved a wide popularity recently, which seems to reflect our current rage for advice on how to succeed and achieve our goals. In my opinion, Taylor does a good job in this area, delivering a piece similar to the popular book "Shortcut to a Miracle," by Michael and Elizabeth Rann.

If you are interested in something more specifically geared towards financial success, you may want to try the classic "Richest Man in Babylon," by George Clason, or "The 17 Principles of Creating Wealth," by Phillip Collinsworth.

Zero Limits can only be described as life altering. The pure and simple practices of the Hawaiian healing method detailed in the book can literally change the world as we know it.

This book is so simple that it is hard to fathom. I have been using this ancient Hawaiian healing system and it has been working for me. In order to let go of hoping I can forgive somebody else for a perceived wrong, I just ask to be forgiven. I now know that everything exists within me and not out there. So the way out of a problem is to go within. Thanks I needed that.

Nothing but sales pitch for his other books, his seminar, and he says nothing about real Ho'O Ponopono.

This is the second book by Joe Vitale that I have finished in record time! He has me hook, line and sinker.
I thought "The Attractor Factor" was great, but this one makes me even more of a true fan of his work.
ANYONE who buys "Zero Limits" will greatly benefit from the information it contains. As far as I am concerned, there is NO OTHER self improvement bok or guru on the market. Joe Vitale's works blow them ALL out of the water.
I can't wait for "The Key" in a few weeks!

I had to buy this book as part of a college course curriculum.

This book was well written and easy to read. I really enjoyed the material covered in the book.

Of course, the professor of the course I was taking added a lot of personal material which was extremely helpful, but overall this was a great book for the course.

There is definitely room for improvement as there were quite a few grammar and spelling errors in this book as well as two instances of absolutely incorrect legal information concerning family law which the professor had to bring to our attention.

5 out of 5 stars There is no easy way to preserve your parents assets...........2007-06-02

This is a really grim but realistic assessment of the major attack on the middle class that congress has waged.

We baby boomers have elderly parents going into nursing homes.
Since Medicaid is only for indigent people without more than $2000 total in assets, our parents do not qualify to have the government pay for their care in nursing homes. But with the yearly cost of nursing homes around $70,000 per year or more, our parents can't pay for it out of their assets. We are really stuck.

Each year congress clamps down harder on us, narrowing the ways that we can try to hang onto our parents life savings when they need to go into nursing homes. They will need to have some money in the bank to pay for all the things not provided for them, such as haircuts, private nurses, televisions, clothing, etc.

In trying to qualify for Medicaid, parents gift children their life savings but this causes a five year waiting period before they can then qualify for Medicaid.

There is the new Personal Services Contract which states that caretaker children of their parents are entitled to a fair compensation for taking care of aging parents. This does not mean the usual cooking and housekeeping, but actually performing nursing duties around the clock. A court has ruled that the child who does this is entitled to the going wage for this type of work. Therefore, before this work is done for the parent, a Personal Services Contract must be prepared by a lawyer who specializes in Medicaid planning. The drawback is that all the taxes must be paid on this just as if it were any other type of employee paycheck.

This book does a very good job of briefly describing various methods that might preserve an elderly person's assets from being siezed by the government to pay for the nursing home. It gives some critical details that can actually make or break the application for Medicaid, such as exactly when to apply, neither too early or too late.

It is horribly depressing to see an elderly parent's life savings be eaten up by nursing home costs. If the nursing home doesn't get it the governmet will. You may be able to preserve at least some of it though with the help of a good eldercare lawyer. Don't be unprepared though. Read this book first, and good luck!

The question of how to protect your family assets is timely. It is an important consideration faced by the majority of American citizens. As a result of longer life expectancy, rising medical costs, and complicated governmental programs, more and more people are forced to spend all their money before they ever qualify to take advantage of Medicaid benefits. Heiser's book is a godsend as it guides the reader through the complex issues relating to Medicaid benefits, qualifications, and application strategies.

This amazing guidebook will help you discover the secrets of protecting your family assets in ways that will not disqualify you from Medicaid benefits. The contents include a comprehensive working definition of Medicaid, what is provided, and how to apply for the program. Medical and income qualifications are covered in detail. Strategies for transferring assets, setting up trusts, and planning annuities are all addressed.

I personally found the Case Studies to be helpful. These examples gave several possible scenarios which offered me ideas for integrating these applications to planning an approach to finding solutions in my own life situation.

The appendix contains important information on a Durable Power of Attorney, as well as valuable suggestions on obtaining a qualified attorney. A glossary, important statistical tables, some applicable federal laws, a list of resources and agencies available, and Medicaid questionnaires, all make this a valuable resource and reference guide.

    J. Gabriel Heiser, an attorney, with over 23-years experience in the field of elder law and estate planning is well-qualified to author this book.

This is an important guide for retirement planning and for anyone with a family member in, or approaching, a long-term-care situation. It can also become a valuable resource and reference guide for professional financial and estate planners, attorneys, for people in the medical profession, social workers, and ministers.

I found the book to be crucial, timely, and important. "How to Protect Your Family's Assets from Devastating Nursing Home Costs: Medicaid Secrets" is a book that should be read by every American tax payer as well as by every recipient and future recipient of Medicaid benefits.

5 out of 5 stars Book Review by Michael Sabbeth, Esq. .......2007-04-18

    Book Review
How to Protect Your Family's Assets from Devastating Nursing Home Costs: Medicaid Secrets
    By Gabriel Heiser, Esq.

Medicaid is a vast federal bureaucratic healthcare system that operates on the federal, state and local levels. The federal government delegates considerable rule making authority and discretion to the individual states, which, in turn, delegate to individual counties their own regulation-making power. Added to this percolating brew is the reality that individual nursing homes make their own rules and policies for dealing with Medicaid recipients.
Thus, legal practitioners, government officials and inquiring citizens are confronted with a regulation-intensive field of law and public health so labyrinthine that even Daedalus and Icarus would have to put attorneys on retainer to help them navigate through it.
Gabriel Heiser is an attorney in Boulder, Colorado, specializing in Medicaid qualification matters as a sub-set of his practice in elder law. He has written How to Protect Your Family's Assets from Devastating Nursing Home Costs: Medicaid Secrets, a straight-forward concise volume that clarifies and simplifies the processes of analyzing Medicaid qualification and payment issues and crafting strategies for dealing with them in a cost-effective way in real-life situations.
The book has a Table of Contents that is logically organized and indicates that the major components of the topic are thoroughly addressed. The Index illustrates the excellent organization of the book and makes it easy to reference back to specific concepts within the text.
One aspect that I liked particularly was Heiser's detailed references in the text to material previously covered. Instead of writing something generic such as, `as stated earlier' or `as I previously covered,' Heiser gives specific page numbers and topic headings. The book is, thus, highly user friendly for the lay person as well as for the knowledgeable practitioner.
The book also provides Medicaid contacts for each state; a list of resources and citations to relevant federal statutes. I found both refreshing and admirable Heiser's direct forthright addressing of the ethical dimension of a lawyer giving advice intended to reduce the financial burden imposed on an individual or on a family when qualifying for and receiving Medicaid benefits.
Anticipating critics, Heiser gives examples where profligacy and irresponsible behavior have been financially rewarded and where thrift and self-sacrifice have been punished. He ends the topic with a trenchant quote from Justice Learned Hand: "Anyone may so arrange his affairs that his taxes shall be as low as possible; he is not bound to choose that pattern which will best pay the Treasury."
Heiser's book builds on the overall topic incrementally from basic concepts--what is Medicaid?--to rather sophisticated arcane aspects of Medicaid law. Heiser displays the enviable skill of breaking down into understandable segments esoteric concepts that do not trip easily off the tongue such as the Community Spouse Resource Allowance, irrevocable trusts, minimum monthly maintenance needs allowances and penalty dates.
Upon completing the book, the reader will not be sufficiently trained to walk into federal court and litigate a case, of course, but the reader will have a comprehensive grasp of the issues to guide future financial decisions and to ask more probing questions of legal counsel. As a disclaimer, Heiser emphasizes that obtaining the advice of an experienced elder law attorney in the client's home state is essential to successful Medicaid planning.
I end this review with two judgments. First, the book is not about Medicaid `secrets.' Rather, it is about the analysis and deductions made and implications offered by a skilled lawyer trying to make accessible the rules and laws imposed on a massive bureaucracy. If in this day and age the effort to describe the law to average citizens constitutes secrets, then there is much to lament. Second, the book does not show how to protect all assets from nursing home costs. It shows how to protect some assets and how to distribute some of those assets to family and recipients other than to the layers of government.
The book is easy to read. It is free of mind-numbing jargon and arrogant intellectual self-indulgence. It is meant to be a foundational primer to help people keep some of their assets should life's tempests require access to Medicaid nursing home benefits. It successfully achieves that goal.

Exceptionally well written; Great insight to issues w/ law enforcement. Dr. Gilmartin is a clinical psychologist that has 20yrs experience in a Sheriff's department. So he knows from whence he speaks. "Real" language quotes, so not for the exceptionally sensitive.
When you understand the dramatic highs and lows of the officer's emotional life it helps you to "take the bull by the horns" and deal with it, if your heart is in it.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for COPS.......2005-03-28

Yes, this is an excellent book for those who are in the field of Law Enforcement. The author explains what happens to many cops and the consequences of their jobs. The book also tells you how to "fix" the problem(s) of hypervigilance--the meaning when applied to cops is that they are "on" or "high" from working as cops and that carries over into their personal lives.

********** 10 stars! A MUST read for anyone married (or involved) with a cop!!!!

5 out of 5 stars For LAW ENFORCEMENT and their families.......2004-12-12

I am the wife of a police officer of over 4 years. This book is EXCELLENT. Any new or established officer will benefit greatly from this book. (whether male or female officer.)

After my husband (who is an officer) read it, he said that he sees many of these examples in his life and the lives of those with whom he works. Because of this book, he has been able to recognize his deficiencies and is working on improving them. It literally saved our marriage where counseling and other books (marriage ones) could not because the real issues were never discussed: His JOB and what affects hypervigilance has in our life. It is more than just being "overly" aware of your surroundings and it is VERY real for those who are police officers.

Anyone who is married (or involved) to an officer knows how stressful it is at times, for him, you and the kids, but there is no reason to be a victim of his job. This book gives practical instruction on how to overcome many of the common symptoms that affect an officer in his career--whether a rookie or a veteran. It is a quick read because it focuses on hypervigilance-the main thing that "changes" a person when they become a cop. Being bitter on the job is not inevitable! There is hope if the officer can recognize the problem.

Give this book to all of the officers you know, especially those who are married and NEW to LE work. It can save them years of heartache if they know what to look out for and what to expect.

3 out of 5 stars How hypervigilance affects your personal life.......2004-02-13

This book handles the issue of how the need of being constantly aware of ones' surroundings can adversely affect the personal life of a police officer. While the book is aimed primarily for police officers, it can be of benefit for people in similar occupations. The information presented is not relevant for an armed citizen, however.

While this book is not te definitive book on the adverse effects of continuous hypervigilance, it explains the issue throughly and in logical manner. The author explains in a very illustrative manner how one thing leads to another: How police officer learns to like the "high" of police work, which leads to putting more emphasis on the cop role at the expence of civilian life, which in turn makes the individual more one sided, and therefore more vulnerable, and so on. At the end of the book, the author gives simple instructions on how to became an emotional survival.

The text is not too scientific, and the author uses conversational tone through the book. There are also lots of charts and drawings to illustrate the issues handled in the text. Some illustrations are used over and over, but every time there is something new added, to illustrate how things build on top of others. There is lot of humor in the text, and there are numerous case histories used throught the book to further illustrate the issues. And because the book is written in very plain language, it is fast to read.

This is a very valuable book for every law enforcement officer to read. If you are interested in officer survival, this book is essential reading.
