5 out of 5 stars The best book I have read for pre-med.......2007-09-12

I would highly recommend this book to anyone going into pre-med. There are so many practical tips, ideas, etc.

I have been doing a lot of research into medschools and what it takes to get in etc and this book did not seem too redundant to me.

The writing style is friendly and easy to read. I almost feel like a trusted friend is giving me advice.

4 out of 5 stars Not many books like this........2007-08-27

Although this book is a little outdated, it answers many of the questions premed students have about getting into med school. It helped me to focus my efforts and keep on the path of becoming a doctor.

5 out of 5 stars Informative.......2007-03-17

Lots of good to know as well as need to know information. I could've wasted my time in a career in medicine but now that I know what all is involved, I know it's just not for me. You may think you're meant to be a doctor and so may all of your friends and family but don't be so sure until you find out how to get to that career and what all it entails.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, subtle and inspiring.......2007-02-17

This book is excellent for someone just thinking of applying into medical school. It simply crashes the stereotypes of what makes a doctor and make the journey and initiation to medical school more simple. So YES you don't have to be a genius to get in and finish. You just need to have your own personal self concept to get you through to the end of the day. Great handbook for medical students

4 out of 5 stars Great for anyone considering to become a doctor.......2006-10-17

This book was great, but most of it was common sense knowlege. I had wished it had gone into more detail about medical shool etc...The ending of the book sort of just dropped off, I kind of expected more. But it was a real eye opener, and it showsthat as long as you put your mind to something you can be anything you want to. A great self motivator!

1 out of 5 stars Only buy this book if you know nothing about PAs.......2007-01-12

This book is filled with insanely obvious "insights" such as
--consider commuting to school rather than living on campus to save money and
--talk with practicing physician assistants to learn more.

Don't waste your money unless you need the obvious drawn out in torturous detail.

3 out of 5 stars rudimentary overview.......2005-11-16

This is a short, simple overview of the PA profession that is worth the used book price. It reads more like a long magazine article than a book, for some reason. Anyone needing a nice quick introduction to the job will be satisfied with this book, although it's out of date. The many people interviewed seem to all be from Chicago, which is unusual, and also most got their education several years ago when there were literally dozens of different ways to become a PA. Modern day applicants will find many of the loosey-goosey programs of the past are now traditional masters programs just like any other. The old "I worked with a doctor for a few years and they let me sit for the boards" type of story is history, nothing more. Most of the content is just published questionnaires and personal short essays from respondents, without commentary or context by the author who seems to have no real personal knowledge of the profession. He might as well have been writing about the history of the bicycle or how air conditioning has changed our lives. But if you are just starting out and need a quick look at the job, this isn't a bad place to start.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of what a PA is.......1998-11-07

If you are curious about the physician assistant profession, this book takes you through the life of a PA. This walks you through the profession from the view of a student and professionals in a variety of different fields.

Book Description

Health Care Job Explosion offers a distinct advantage over other books of this type. It is two books in one — a comprehensive CAREER GUIDE plus a dynamic JOB FINDER. First, it provides a detailed description of each of the major health care career fields. Second, comprehensive resources are listed for job announcements (publications with job ads, job hotlines, Internet sites for job seekers, and job fairs), placement services, directories, and general information (associations, career-oriented web sites, and job related books). This dual format permits comparisons between specialties and offers insight into qualifications, cross-training potential, and pay. The job descriptions list occupations with similar skill and training requirements.

Later chapters explore the following occupation groups: Health Technologists

Health Technicians

Dietetics, Pharmacy, and Therapy

Nursing

Health and Social Services

Health Diagnosing and Assistants

Home Health Care and Computers

The job descriptions offer the most up-to-date information available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2006-2007 Occupational Outlook Handbook, interspersed with succinct input provided from many health care professionals and organizations. Each occupational listing covers the nature of the work, working conditions, employment statistics, training, other qualifications, advancement, job outlook, earnings, and related occupations. Following each job description is a carefully selected list of invaluable career and job resources. The all new fourth edition covers all major occupational groups and includes a comprehensive chapter on home health care, over 1400 updated resources, expanded sections, and interviews with health care workers. Our web site at healthcarejobs.org was created exclusively for this title.

VARIETY AND GROWTH CHARACTERIZE THE FIELD

The opportunities aren't limited to traditional health care occupations. Health care institutions will need thousands of additional accountants, auditors, personnel specialists, directors of personnel, attorneys, buyers, computer programmers, researchers, computer support specialists, chemists, engineers, drafters, computer operators, Photographers, file clerks, secretaries, purchasing clerks, and food service helpers. Furthermore, employment growth is not limited to the traditional full-time job. Part time employment is on the increase as well.

The increased demand for health care services, fed by the growing proportion of elderly in the population, is expected to continue for a full 50 years! According to the Administration on Aging the number of Americans over age 65 is expected to grow to 40.2 million by 2010 and to 71.5 million by 2030. Older Americans spend more than twice that of all others on medical services. The health care needs of this population will contribute greatly to the creation of new jobs.

Thirteen of the 20 occupations with the fastest projected growth rate are in health care. (See Table 1-1 in the book.) The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts that the private hospital industry is expected to employ nearly 5 million people by 2014, which will make it the seventh largest source of employment growth. Employment in doctor's offices and clinics will also increase and the BLS expects a 56% increase in home health aides. Health care manpower shortages are now commonplace and many health care providers take months to locate qualified personnel. An American Hospital Association survey found that the health care workforce is shrinking while demand for hospital care rose in 2004.

It is not just traditional medical jobs that are growing. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, of the seven remaining 20 fastest-growing occupations, five are in computers (an industry with increasing importance in medicine) while two are medical related: medical scientists and forensic science technicians.

5 out of 5 stars Needed a change and this was the perfect guide!.......2006-11-26

I knew I needed a change in life and a new career. But I new it needed to be something that paid decent and would give me job security. So I bought this book, read about the different fields and then handed it over to my teenage daughter to get her thinking about her future....This book guided me in the right direction and now I am in school and will graduate in early 2008. I will have job security and a decent salary until I retire. If you are interested in the medical field then this book is a great guide in helping you decide what you would like to do and how much education you need, where to go to school and what exams you must pass. Great book for those looking for a career change or just thinking of trying something else in life.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive career guide and a job locator for health care jobs.......2006-08-12

The new fourth edition of "Health Care Job Explosion!: High Growth Health Care Careers and Job Locator" is a brand new comprehensive career guide and a job locator for health care jobs. Health career data can be accessed at multiple internet sites, with one created especially for this book (http://healthcarejobs.org). The book is very user-friendly and is conveniently organized into 10 chapters. The first, "the Health Care Explosion," is an overview, while the second, "the Nexus - Making a Connection," is helpful to increase chances of obtaining the desired job. Chapter three, "Job Sources for Everyone," is an invaluable key to many resources, including job advertising services, job fairs, job hotlines, internet sites, associations and directories. It even includes pages on the Internet, Surfing lessons, LIST SERVERS, search engines, and education and career resources. A handy system of symbols connects the reader to the desired resource. Chapters four through ten cover general health care job areas, from health technologists and technicians to dietetics, pharmacy, therapy, nursing, health and social services, health diagnosing occupations and assistants, and home health care jobs. Each of these chapters begins with an interview with a practicing health care worker in the listed field. Job descriptions include significant points, a description of the nature of the work, working conditions, training, qualifications and advancement, job outlook, earnings, and related occupations. This is followed by an exhaustive listing of additional special resources pertaining to that occupation/area, again using the helpful icons established in chapter 3. Finally, Appendices A and B present information about health care corporations and sources for tuition and scholarships for specialized health care job training. "Health Care Job Explosion!" is an updated resource that will serve all who seek to build a career in one of the many areas related to health care in the United States. It would be a valued addition to the shelves of libraries and education institutions.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Resource!.......2000-02-12

You can't find a better book for the healthcare industry. A must for anyone looking to land that first job or a better one.

    1 out of 5 stars Outrageously Overpriced.......2006-11-10

Well, let's just say that this is one way to finance your career transition--sell a very short book for a very big price. The first few chapters, which describe some of the cultural norms that may impede a physician's career transition, were engaging and informative. About a third of the way through, though, the book became pure, unadulterated, non-informative filler. Meanwhile, the book is priced like a medical textbook. Under no circumstances should anyone buy this book at full price. Just because I made this mistake doesn't mean the rest of you have to! ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Strategic Career Management for the 21st Century Physician.......2000-11-25

A unique and much needed resource for physicians at all stages of their careers. This book will also be helpful to anyone contemplating entering the medical profession. Dr. Hirsch succinctly presents for the reader a comprehensive guide to the many career options available to those with a medical degree. She provides a clear, analytical framework from which the reader can explore their own best "career fit" within the medical profession. Despite the crisis in clinical medicine today, Dr. Hirsch presents her message in a positive, constructive style.

      ABSTRACT
      OPPORTUNITIES IN PHYSICIAN CAREERS
      WRITTEN BY JAN SUGAR-WEBB, M.A
      VGM CAREER HORIZIONS

The book Opportunities in Physician Careers covers everywhere from the history of medicine to what schooling is needed to become a physician.
The first chapter talks about the history of medicine. She talks about where medicine first started with the ancient Egyptians, and the influence of Greek medicine. She also talks about the how the Renaissance and the seventeenth century influenced medicine. The book also goes into detail about the start of prevention, and the rise of modern medicine. At the end of this chapter the book touches on the future of medicine.
The book also talks about the training needed to get into medical school and what to expect before, during and after medical school. After medical school you will go into residency training, which includes residents, interns, and fellows. It into detail about where you would do residency, hours worked, and pay.

Then for rest of the book it talks about specialties you can get into. Specifically Family Practice and General Internal Medicine Surgery and Surgical Specialties. It also talks about Medical Specialists such as cardiovascular medicine, Hematology and many others. The book also talks about other specialists you can be, for example pediatrics, gynecology, anesthesiology and many others.
At the end of the book it talks about the future of medicine. It focuses on the job outlook, alternative medicine, and patients' rights.
I think that this book is a good book to look into the many different aspects of medicine. The author goes into detail about what to excect when getting into different fields of medicine. She also talks about the history anf future of medicine. Over all I think this is a very informative book.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the time or money.......2000-06-04

I am a med student who was looking for specific information about specialties and this book was worthless. It was extremely short and about 1/3 of its pages were comprised of a list of medical schools. The only possible use for this book is for a middle or high school student who lacks even the most rudimentary knowledge about medial education and practice.

1 out of 5 stars No Use for USA .......2007-09-06

While this may be a good resource for the UK, it is not really relevant or useful for USA residents or fellows looking for guidance in developing their CV

Nice But A Lot of Text !

Yeh It is a good book for Doctors going for Interveiw But I think if the author summarize some "LONG PARAGRAPH" to Upto the Point it would be better .

5 out of 5 stars Change your life in an evening.......2001-05-02

Demystifying medical institutions is attempted by many, but only successfully achieved by a few.

This book is an out-and-out success.

The author gives a very experienced insider's view of the art of succeeding in a medical job interview. Many of the tips could, no doubt, be extended to other professions, and are not just appropriate to the UK. The book blends serious application to the task with amusing anecdotes, and is essential bed-time reading before any medical job interview. BUY IT!
