Book Description
When Sisters of the Yam: Black Women and Self-Recovery was originally released in 1994, it won critical praise and solidified bell hooks' reputation as one of the leading public intellectuals of her generation. Today, the book is considered a classic in African American and feminist circles.
In Sisters of the Yam, hooks examines how the emotional health of black women is wounded by daily assaults of racism and sexism. Exploring such central life issues as work, beauty, trauma, addiction, eroticism and estrangement from nature, hooks shares numerous strategies for self-recovery and healing. She also shows how black women can empower themselves and effectively struggle against racism, sexism and consumer capitalism.
As hooks' first book on psychological concerns, Sisters of the Yam paved the way for her more recent and popular writing on love, relationships and community. This South End Press Classics Edition will include a new introduction.
Praise for Sisters of the Yam: Black Women and Self-Recovery:
"By confronting topics avoided in polite company-including progressive black folks-hooks helps us tackle our deepest fears, those we harbor about our self-worth as African Americans, and get on with the business of becoming."-Village Voice Literary Supplement
"hooks continues to produce some of the most challenging, insightful, and provocative writing on race and gender in the United States today."-Library Journal
"[bell hooks] draws more effectively on her own experiences and sense of identity than . . . most other writers."-Publishers Weekly

Sisters of the yam.......2002-08-03
bell hooks makes you think! which is a hard process to do
Sisters & brothers should read this material-there is no color barrier here but provoking thinking material.
hooks' writes with honesty and courage!.......2002-02-06
I loved this book. I think every African American woman should read this book at least once a year, as an annual celebration of self. hooks is reflective and honest. It is also a good reference for mental health therapists working with African American women.
The new feminist test of male virtue.......2001-07-20
This is worth buying just for the essay in which Hooks compares two of her male lovers, a good one and a bad one. The distinction between the two is the manner in which they respond to Bell's quirky little habit of initiating sex but then, once having aroused her partner, shutting the guy down and sending him away without his cookie. She does this on a regular basis. Now the bad partner is bad because he used to get out of sorts over this behavior, but the good guy is good because he's all understanding about it. He knows that this is what Bell needs to feel "safe" in a relationship, don't you see.
Don't misunderstand me here: a woman is entitled to press the "disengage" button at any point during a sexual encounter. No means no, ,no matter what the circumstance, etc etc. That's a different issue, however. What we have here is the psychosexual equivalent of Lucy, Charlie Brown and the football. No psychologically healthy person of either sex runs trips like this one someone they love, and no psychologically healthy person would put up with it past the second repetition.
Second only to Mary Daly, Hooks is the leading feminist crank of our day.
A Must for all Black Women.......2001-04-02
This book is truly inspiring. It is honest and forthright about the problems of black women the world over. It should be a recommended text for women's studies and certainly for young women today who have never experienced the pain of abuse. I found the experience of reading this book very inspiring, at times painful but always hopeful.
Sisters of the Yam renews the sister soul.......2000-12-20
This book has altered my thought process in ways I never thought possible. bell hooks has spoken with clear and simple words about black women and our individual and collective need to self-recover--from racism, sexism, of course--but also from our own (often) self-imposed 'isms carried from childhood. She's brutally honest in a book that sits unmoved from my bed-stand. A recommended read for black women. Period. Regardless of background and circumstance. A must read for those on the never-ending journey of self-introspection that eventually encourages self-recovery.

Book Description
In honor of the thirtieth anniversary of its first publication, we are happy to reissue Nancy Milio's 9226 Kercheval, a groundbreaking book which analyzes the success of the Mom and Tots Center in urban Detroit in the late 1960s. At the time of its first publication, Robert Coles called the book "rare and extremely important" and remarked, "I can only hope that all those concerned with urban problems might read this unusual and inspiring book."
Milio adds a new Preface to update readers on the fate of the center and the issues of poverty and health care which continue today.
From the original Preface:
"This is the story of a venture in the ghetto, of the development of a ghetto health project which still lives, and of its meaning as I saw it as director. It is a tale told twice, in alternating sections: first as a factual account of events, then as a personal interpretation of those events--the story from the inside of the white outsider who was present. . . . The unfolding is literally and allegorically a story of involvement and change, the evolution of a new institution and of the people who made it. It is, in its parallel construction here, the public and private stories behind a benignly named storefront in a Detroit ghetto, the Mom and Tots Center, and of the inevitable intertwining of the two. . . . This book does say at least two things. First that health, as quality of life, as 'wholeness, unfolding,' must be mirrored in the process of undertakings intended to improve health. And that those who would involve others, especially the poor, in the process of healthful change, must themselves be involved: the one who would change others must himself be changed."
Nancy Milio is Professor of Health Policy and Administration and Professor of Nursing, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is also the author of Engines of Empowerment: Using Information Technology to Create Healthy Communities and Challenge Public Policy and Nutrition Policy for Food Rich Countries: A Strategic Analysis, among others.

Thankful.......2007-01-29
I was so pleased to get this book so quickly. I had looked other places for it to see if I could beat the price as it is a required text for one of my classes. The seller was great in communicating with me and delivered the product in the condition it was promised.
I've waited a long time for this reprint!.......2001-01-19
Back in 1970, wading through a mire of academic prose in graduate school, I was dazzled by my discovery of Nancy Milio's new book, "9226 Kercheval." Not only was the author a nurse (like me), she was working in the community (like me). Better still, she wasn't pontificating or theorizing. In her own voice, she told the story of how she worked with residents of a restless, inner-city neighborhood just coming to grips with the potential of black power, to start a health center for women and children. It was hard slogging, but worth it in the end. I never would have guessed that, ten years later, I'd be engaged in a similar undertaking, albeit in very different circumstances--and writing about it. A couple of years ago, I begged a friend for her precious copy of the original hardback edition and reread it. It still elicited a "Wow!" Now I've got my own copy. I hope all of you reading this will consider doing the same.

Two thirds of the chapters are all-new with fresh topics and information, and the remaining chapters have been completely updated. This book will be of interest to health professionals and professors, social workers, counselors and students in these fields, as well as African American women seeking more information on these health threats.
Book Description
Through sound medical information, humorous dialogue between sisters, thoughtful essays, and real-life conversations, this book takes African American women through an informative journey of self-awareness and empowerment about their own bodies. Presented here are all the medical facts necessary for women to make informed, educated decisions about weight and health. Included are information about finding one's ideal weight, tips on what to ask the doctor, and strategies for reaching and maintaining weight goals and optimum health. Livin' Large.......2006-02-23
The authors of this book get straight to the point! They don't hold back any punches and when it comes to such a serious matter I don't believe that they should. By reading this book the reader will learn that African-American's suffer from the disease of obesity more than any other race. That's right, these author's feel that obesity is a disease! They don't buy into the myth that African-American women are suppose to be `thick' in order to be considered cute or sexy. They also think that we should know that obesity is dangerous and even more alarming is the fact that more of our younger African-American children are starting to show signs of obesity related diseases. Wow, this is a serious topic, right? Yes, it is, but these two authors -who by the way are sisters- have written a book filled with solid information so that African-American's can learn that they have a choice in making the right decisions about what they eat and how to live a healthier life style.
Dr. Stacy Ann Mitchell shares medical facts with us, like how the metabolism works and the formula for calculating `Body Mass Index'. Her sister Teri Mitchell on the other hand comes at the reader with a different approach. A "recovering big girl" approach. She adds humor, honesty, but even more importantly she adds that human touch to let the reader know that it was not that easy for her either to decide to make the right choices. From tips on controlling your blood pressure to poems like "The Heart of the Fat", I think these authors and this book will be successful in getting this important message across to the reader. I got the message!
I am glad that I decided to read "Livin' Large African American Sisters Confront Obesity"! I highly recommend it to those of you who are wrestling -up and down-with their weight and obesity related health problems. Also if you are still using excuses like `big bones' run in my family, you need to read this book!

Book Description
African American women have commonly been portrayed as "pillars" of their communities -- resilient mothers, sisters, wives, and grandmothers who remain steadfast in the face of all adversities. While these portrayals imply that African American women have few psychological problems, the scientific literature and demographic data present a different picture. They reveal that African American women are at increased risk for psychological distress because of factors that disproportionately affect them, including lower incomes, greater poverty and unemployment, unmarried motherhood, racism, and poor physical health. Yet at the same time, rates of mental illness are low. This invaluable book is the first comprehensive examination of the contradictions between the strengths and vulnerabilities of this population. Using the contexts of race, gender, and social class, In and Out of Our Right Minds challenges the traditional notions of mental health and mental illness as they apply to African American women.

uncomfortable intersection of racism and sexism.......2006-05-15
Hine tells an uncomfortable story of an era of pervasive racism and sexism. It deals with the intersection of race and gender expectations in the nursing profession of the US, up till 1950. In many countries, nursing was a predominently female occupation, and it had to struggle for level of responsibility and recognition, against a male medical profession.
But in the US, there was an overlay of race. Negro women also entered the profession. Or at least tried to. Hine describes how the white female nursing associations responded, by imposing racist exclusionary requirements. In part to try and garner some "respectability" from the white male doctoral hierarchy. A pernicious choice that led to the formation of parallel Negro nursing groups. For those of you who may have heard of the Negro baseball leagues, there are clear parallels.
