Review from CC Archives
Here's the perfect recipe for a book about cannabis: use three authors who have spent decades studying cannabis horticulture, combine them with an international publishing company, and give them enough resources to create an oversized book with professional citations, illustrations, and binding.
This perfect recipe has produced a gorgeous new book, HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS - MANAGEMENT AND BIOLOGICAL CONTROL. The authors - Dr. John McPartland, Robert Connell Clarke, and David Watson - are premier marijuana researchers whose credibility and breadth of knowledge are legendary.
McPartland is a medical doctor, botanist and cannabinoid researcher. Clarke is the author of two epic texts, MARIJUANA BOTANY and HASHISH!. Watson runs HortaPharm, the Dutch cannabis breeding consortium supplying specialty cannabis to UK med-pot research projects conducted by GW Pharmaecuticals.
HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS is a fascinating, practical book, and an upcoming issue of CANNABIS CULTURE will give a more complete summary of its features. For the purposes of this brief online review, however, I assure you that this book will significantly increase yield, efficiency and quality for any marijuana grower who follows its advice.
The book includes photos that help growers diagnose dozens of plant dysfunctions, including enemy insects, mites, mammals, and fungi, environmentally-caused problems, overwatering, and nutrient deficiencies. It tells growers how to protect their crops using biocontrols instead of toxic chemicals. It describes ideal soil components, harvesting guidelines, and curing procedures.
Although HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS is not intended as a "grow book" that focuses on lighting, security, and clandestine techniques, its scope, accuracy and detail make it an incomparable textbook that every marijuana grower should have. It is interesting and entertaining, immaculately presented and organized, and features the most innovative and reliable techniques for keeping your plants healthy and happy.
HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS is a large, 251 page, professional book with a professional price. It's well worth it. When I grew my own marijuana, I was often puzzled by plant problems. If I'd had this book, I could have easily eliminated those problems. HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS will likely increase the yield of your garden by at least 50%- if that's not worth, I don't know what is!

Ecological Methods in Forest Pest Management
David Wainhouse Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0198505647 |
Book Description
This book is about the management of forest pests. It focuses predominantly on insect pests, but many examples relate to fungal pathogens, some of which are vectored by forest insects. The central theme of the book is the development of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), the main impetus for which comes from the need to use environmentally sensitive methods of control appropriate to both semi-natural and plantation forests. Such forests are likely to be managed not only for timber production but also for recreation and to enhance biodiversity. An introductory chapter describes how forests have been transformed by exploitation and management and how altering the composition and distribution of forests can contribute to pest problems. Subsequent chapters focus on the 'techniques' of management and control that contribute to IPM, considering in turn plant health, risk-rating, silviculture, tree resistance, biological control, microbial control and semiochemicals. By focussing on these important elements of management, the aim is to provide a critical analysis of the theory and practice of each one in relation to key aspects of both pest and forest ecology. The final chapter on IPM brings together elements of the previous chapters, discussing them in the context of the economic and environmental impact of pests, the economics of control, and the role of decision support systems. Detailed case studies are provided and future developments in IPM discussed in relation to sustainability, conservation and the potential impact of climate change.

Enhancing Biological Control: Habitat Management to Promote Natural Enemies of Agricultural Pests
Manufacturer: University of California Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0520213629 |
Book Description
Over the past ten years an increasing number of field entomologists and farmers have recognized that conservation of natural enemies is important to effective biological control in many agricultural systems. This collection addresses an important gap in the biological control literature by providing the first comprehensive summary of recent findings on habitat manipulation to control pests. Enhancing Biological Control includes contributions from experts around the world: the United States, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, People's Republic of China, and Switzerland. Chapters cover habitat modification in such areas as fields, orchards, or vineyards, and along or near the perimeters of fields, including hedges or other uncultivated areas. Generalist and specialist natural enemies are described in full, as are theoretical and practical issues. Experimental designs for studying enhancement come into play, and the editors include a modeling study that explores how the dispersal of natural enemies interacts with the positioning of refuges. This volume is an invaluable source of information to researchers, progressive farmers, and agricultural consultants.

Turfgrass Insects of the United States and Canada (Comstock Book)
Patricia J. Vittum , Michael G. Villani , and Haruo Tashiro Manufacturer: Cornell University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0801435080 |
Book Description
The first edition of this reference work became known as the bible of turfgrass entomology upon publication in 1987. It proved invaluable to both professional entomologists and commercial turf managers, and also has been used widely in college extension courses. Now the author of that work, Haruo Tashiro, is joined by Patricia J. Vittum and Michael G. Villani in incorporating the latest research into an eagerly awaited second edition that provides the most comprehensive coverage available of turfgrass pests in the continental United States, Hawaii, and southern Canada. The volume opens with an account of turfgrass in the modern environment and then offers fundamental information on insects and their arthropod relatives. For each major insect or group, the book covers taxonomy, importance, history and distribution, host plants and damage, description of life stages, life history and habits, and natural enemies. Birds and mammals that are attracted to turfgrass by the presence of insects are also considered. The book provides an overview of detection and diagnosis of insect infestation, survey techniques, and principles of strategy and control.
Every chapter of the original edition has been updated to the current state of knowledge. Among the highlights of the second edition are new chapters on biological control principles, on sampling techniques and setting thresholds, and on integrated pest management. The chapters on chemical control and on insect habitats in turf have been expanded considerably, as have those on billbugs, mole crickets, cutworms, white grubs, and ants.
To aid in identification, this new edition features 576 color images on 72 plates. Larger, clearer images show the life stages of nearly all turfgrass insects to be found in North America north of the Rio Grande, as well as examples of damage. A distribution map and full-sized sketches of developmental stages are also included for each insect pest discussed.
