Book Description
This widely used clinical reference and text has now been fully revised and expanded, providing the latest knowledge on culturally sensitive practice with families and individuals from over 40 different ethnic groups. Each chapter demonstrates how ethnocultural factors may influence the assumptions of both clients and therapists, the issues people bring to the clinical context, and their resources for coping and problem solving. Updated throughout with essential new material, the third edition includes chapters on several additional groups. An indispensable new appendix offers a concise guide to weaving cultural information into assessment and intervention planning.

Ethnicities and Culture.......2007-03-27
This book was suggested to me by one of my professor's who happens to teach a family counseling course. She suggested that we buy this book to use in our future practices. Since I have purchased the book, I have already referred to it twice. It is highly detailed and knowledgable. I was able to use if for a presentation and for a resource on a college exit exam. I highly recommend this book to those who seek further knowledge and information on various cultures. It reviews all nationalities and cultures that exist in today's society.
Ethnicity and Family Therapy, Third Edition.......2007-01-09
This is an extremely valuable and important resource for clinicians. It provides cultural overviews that can be used in clinical work and teaching. It is a wonderful desktop resource that can facilitate the essential process of cultural consideration in clinical work with families. Monica McGoldrick's writing is clear and enjoyable.
Excellent read.......2007-01-09
OK, this book wouldn't seem especially fun to read, and I'll admit that a counselor friend had to recommend it to me, but I find it simply fascinating. As I read through the chapters about my family's heritage, I really found it compelling that many of the the behaviors and values that I take for granted are not simply from my family, but are in large measure common to my ethnicity. Then, as I read about the heritage of my fiancee's family, it really put things into perspective for me. Behaviors that I might have found rude or offensive in my cultural framework have a perfectly natural, and honorable, root in thiers. If understanding is the key to acceptance, this book really helped me understand and communicate much better, and begin to accept and live within different cultures. This book gives an excellent framework to explain how different ethnicitys come to value different things. Highly recommended.
A great way to expand cultural knowledge.......2006-11-10
This is a wonderful and easy to read book that attempts to educate the reader about the culture and divesity of various ethnic groups. The book is divided into racial categories, which are subdivided into specific countries to give the reader a flavor of the diversity within these groups. Anyone who works with ethnic minorities should read this book to get a general sense of how cultural similarities and differences within racial and cultural categories impact family dynamics, the theraputic experience, and adjustment into the American culture.
Very Relevant.......2006-08-07
This is a great book for finding out how to bring people of differing race to an understanding. For instance, I remember one example where White students, approximately between the ages of thirteen and sixteen, were, as part of a therapeutic course, required to refer to all Black people in their environment as 'sir'.This simple sign of respect was a great way to dismantle racism.
Book Description
A monumental compendium on one of the most crucial topics confronting those in public health and health policy, Race, Ethnicity, and Health brings together the best peer reviewed research literature from the leading scholars and faculty in this growing field. This original and much-needed resource will be invaluable to graduate students and researchers alike. The book provides a historical and political context for the study of health, race, and ethnicity, with key findings on disparities in access, use, and quality. This volume also examines the role of health care providers in health disparities and discusses the issue of matching patients and doctors by race.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2006-11-11
This book has a lot of information about the current status of the health disparities issue and the history of the health disparities issue. It is a text book, but the articles are very interesting.
An eloquent speaker as well as health disparities researcher.......2005-12-02
Dr. LaVeist is such an eloquent speaker. I had the pleasure of hearing him speak today at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill's School of Public Health. He captivated all of us with his topic of "Problems and Prospects for Health Disparities Research".
He has made tremendous strides in collaborating with the community of South West Baltimore to gather information on health behavior, psychosocial, housing and community conditions, utilization and access to healthcare information.
If you want a real view of race, ethnicity and minority health, and you are compelled to take part in health disparities research, then buy this book. He autographed mine :-).
A Much Needed Corrective to the Turnock position.......2004-07-13
There are many public health "experts," most notably Barney Turnock of UIC, who spend entire careers re-writing the same vapid books about public health. These authors have a tendency to blithely summarize highly abstract and idealized models of how public health systems should work, rather than analyzing and questioning the ways in which public health systems DO work. And it goes without saying that people like Turnock never examine the ways in which race and economic class determine the availability and quality of health care available - they prefer to believe that these issues have nothing to do with the American health care system.
This book is valuable precisely because its author is someone who actually opens his eyes to the world around him and captures the complexities of what he sees. While authors like Turnock help perpetuate health care systems that lead directly to the death and illness of anyone below the poverty line, real experts like LaVeist are tackling the kind of questions we need to answer in order to create a more just and equitable system. This book is a godsend for anyone who actually wants to learn about public health in the real world - not just the fantasy world of lazy, overprivileged blinkered stooges like Turnock and his brainless Ogden Avenue minions. Here we see real discussions of the relationship between race and various health outcomes, with a keen eye toward the social heirarchies causing these trends and a vision for a better future. Please buy this book, and stay away from the intellectual bubble gum peddled by dishonest public health professors like Turnock.
Used it in class.......2003-06-07
We used this book in my class at this past semester. It was a good overview of the key studies in health disparities. I learned alot about health disparities. Overall I found this book to be a good resource for my class.
Comprehensive.......2003-04-30
A very comprehensive overview of the issues around minority health in the United States. Does not deal with international issues, but the topic of race, ethnitity and health in the US is big enough. You are interested in learning about the topic, this is a very good place to start. You will be depressed after reading some of this. The studies described in the book are convincing and you can't help but conclude that we have a serious problem with regard to minority health.

Book Description
The Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum is a national advocacy organization dedicated to promoting policy, program, and research efforts for improving the health status of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. This book was stimulated by the ideas and efforts of the Forum's National Research Advisory Council (NRAC). First convened in April 1989, the NRAC was formed in response to the poor quality of data, the paucity of health statistics, and the limited epidemiological and health services research on Asian and Pacific Islander Americans. With partial support from the Federal Office of Minority Health, the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum selected three editors noted for their contributions and past compilations of scholarly work. The Forum also commissioned contributors with demonstrated experience and commitment to advancing the understanding of Asian and Pacific Islander American health in the service, research, and policy sectors. This book is a milestone effort reflecting the Forum's commitment to (a) community-based research; (b) building linkages and collaborations between academic researchers, service providers, and policy-makers; (c) advocating for institutional sanctions on improving data sources and research on Asian and Pacific Islander Americans; and (d) the dissemination of relevant information to diverse communities nationwide.

Book Description
Exploring the ways that clients' lives, and family therapy itself, are constrained by larger forces of racial, cultural, sexual, and class-based inequality, this groundbreaking volume expands the boundaries of the field and works toward truly inclusive clinical practice. Editor Monica McGoldrick--whose earlier Ethnicity and Family Therapy provides in-depth portraits of the family systems of more than 40 ethnic groups--here takes up vital cultural issues that cut across all ethnicities. Renowned contributors offer concrete suggestions for improving family therapy training and developing services that minority families may experience as more relevant to their lives.
Customer Reviews:
Great collection.......2006-11-06
I had to buy this book for school, but I truly enjoy reading it. The essays cover many different topics and I am learning a lot from it. It is so important for social workers and family therapists to have an analysis of race, culture and gender!
Thought Provoking.......2006-02-24
Re-Visioning Family Therapy; Race, Culture, and Gender in Clinical Practice is an assigned reading for my graduate psychology program. I enjoy the selections and find that they promote both social awareness and heart opening meditation. The voices are unique and honest, the chapters are well constructed.

Book Description
Children of Color is the thoroughly revised and expanded edition of the classic and definitive guide to the unique problems and special needs of minority youth experiencing psychological and behavioral problems. This comprehensive book presents crucial information on culturally sensitive and culturally competent assessment and treatment approaches for young African Americans, Asian Americans, Central Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, biracial-bicultural, and other so-called minority youth. This new edition contains a wealth of new statistical data, demographics, and cutting- edge interventions techniques, contributed by an ethnically diverse group of mental health professionals who are experts in their fields.
Customer Reviews:
excellent multicultural reference text.......2006-04-16
This book was req for my psychology of youth development and culture class, and I enjoyed reading it. Good framework for further reserach on minority children growing up in USA
Customer Reviews:
Incredibly well researched .......2007-09-29
This is a really important national study of health disparities in the US - mainly health disparities between African Americans and Caucasians (but other ethnic groups are occasionally mentioned). It shows that African Americans experience higher rates of certain medical conditions than other ethnic groups (e.g. diabetes), but also identifies clinical and practical barriers and forms of discrimination which result in inferior treatment. Importantly, it does not address inequalities which stem from discrepancies in insurance coverage -- this is a major limitation, I think.
A word of warning - this is published by the National Institutes of Medicine, so it is incredibly academic - there is a comprehensive, but somewhat excessive, literature review of some topics that lasts 126 pages. Useful for public health/epidemiology students (particularly grad students), but not for the general reader.
Although there is an Executive Summary at the beginning, it is also written in a very academic, rather than accessible, tone. So I would suggest the intended audience is really public health/epidemiology professionals.
