An Introduction to Human Molecular Genetics
Second Edition
Jack J. Pasternak
The Second Edition of this internationally acclaimed text expands its coverage of the molecular genetics of inherited human diseases with the latest research findings and discoveries. Using a unique, systems-based approach, the text offers readers a thorough explanation of the gene discovery process and how defective genes are linked to inherited disease states in major organ and tissue systems. All the latest developments in functional genomics, proteomics, and microarray technology have been thoroughly incorporated into the text.
The first part of the text introduces readers to the fundamentals of cytogenetics and Mendelian genetics. Next, techniques and strategies for gene manipulation, mapping, and isolation are examined. Readers will particularly appreciate the text's exceptionally thorough and clear explanation of genetic mapping. The final part features unique coverage of the molecular genetics of distinct biological systems, covering muscle, neurological, eye, cancer, and mitochondrial disorders. Throughout the text, helpful figures and diagrams illustrate and clarify complex material.
Readers familiar with the first edition will recognize the text's same lucid and engaging style, and will find a wealth of new and expanded material that brings them fully up to date with a current understanding of the field, including:
* New chapters on complex genetic disorders, genomic imprinting, and human population genetics
* Expanded and fully revised section on clinical genetics, covering diagnostic testing, molecular screening, and various treatments
This text is targeted at upper-level undergraduate students, graduate students, and medical students. It is also an excellent reference for researchers and physicians who need a clinically relevant reference for the molecular genetics of inherited human diseases.

Customer Reviews:
Too skimpy.......2007-02-14
This book has too little information for a med student, even in first or second year. A few areas are relatively well covered, but it's neither basic enough to be used as a learning tool nor detailed enough to be used as a reference. I use it once in a while, but only in conjuction with Harrison's, UptoDate, and other such references. You'll still need to go back to a Pathololgy and a Physiology text to find what you're looking for.
Amazon Site Review........2006-03-11
I appreciate the promptness with which your company sends its products out, and I also appreciate that they remain in the new condition on arrival to me. Thank You. One drawback I have seen to your site is that when you end up being late sending an item there are times when you back the date up for several more weeks, which when your a student you need these books to arrive as soon as possible to keep up with reading assignments.
Excellent Pathophysiology book.......2004-12-11
This is an excellent pathophysiology book available in the market. I am right now preparing for my step 2 but I wish I would have used this book for my step 1. I have a decent score on my step 1 and I have taken the exam recently and I think if somebody masters this book they can rock the exam. This book gives excellent information regarding many diseases. I am trying to study this book right now with CMDT, which is also by the same author. Because CMDT is a very concise text book of IM it doesn't explain all the pathophysiology for a disease but this book has all the answers about the pathophysiology of a disease. And I think its a worth buying book for all the medical students, if you study this book little by little during preclinical years it will help you very much understand the IM in the clinical years. I was surprize to find some infornation which I was craving for since few years of my med school. You will even find pathophysilogy of very rare syndromes, as for example I was amazed when I read about X linked Hypophosphatemic rickets. If you are like me who wants to have explanation behind everything, get this book today, you wan't be disappointed.
Graduate Nursing Student.......2004-03-27
I found the book vague and unclear. It was recommended as a "reference" book for a graduate level pathophysiology course and it was the first book I returned. There are several other books on pathophysiology that are on the market for about the same price or a bit more that are MUCH more thorough and useful for undergraduate, graduate or medical student reference. I would NOT recommend this book for anyone looking at any type of indepth medical information.
Very confusing book for USMLE prep.......2003-08-24
Hi there first of all I would like to say that I am from Brazil, Recife, Pernambuco. I went to a university called UPE, FESP which is in the north east part of Brazil. I bought this book because I thought that it would complement BRS pathologyý
But it really didnýt so as I thought that it would;
I mean it does but its like discussing too much one some points so its just not really a good book for the USMLE step1 prep; I was actually led to think that because of something I had read on the first aid book that said that ý
Really did not like the book at all for the usmle prep. Although you can see that itýs a very well made book and they put their hearts into making it but itýs just not good enough for the boards.
Itýs not serving me any good I barely opened it since I bought it and I got their latest edition it was sort of a waste of money for meý I think that this book might be of value for the students at UCSF that are taking classes on introduction to medicine or something like thatý
But for the usmle? Forget itý!!!
Itýs really confusing, and there are no simple index for a particular disease, meaning If you look for something in specific it will be related with some many things that you wont see it right there; there wonýt be simple diseases listed there for you to look at like thatý
Every time I go look for something its not there or itýs in contest with something else makes you loose so much time looking at it to find itý Itýs a very good book but not to be used as a complement to BRS pathology unless youýre taking the class.
Hope that this was of help to some of youý
Dr.Claudio A.G.Monteiro Filho.
Book Description
Winner of the 2006 AMWA Book Awards Physicians Category, An Introduction to Clinical Emergency Medicine is a much-needed resource for individuals practicing in this challenging field. It takes a novel approach, describing in detail the best and most current methods including initial patient evaluation, generation of differential diagnoses, problem-solving and management of challenging conditions based on presenting symptoms. Unlike other textbooks, in which the diagnosis is known, this textbook approaches clinical problems as clinicians approach patients - without full knowledge of the final diagnosis. It provides an understanding of how to approach patients with undifferentiated conditions, ask the right questions, gather historical data, utilize physical examination skills and order and interpret laboratory and radiographic tests. It provides current management and disposition strategies with controversies presented, including pearls and summary points for each topic covered. The book is multi-author, each contributor chosen because of a track record in teaching as well as being internationally recognised experts in the specialty.
Customer Reviews:
Great for EM students.......2007-10-08
As a fourth year med student interested in EM, this is a great text. You can't finish it over one rotation at over 700 pages. But if you're taking 2-3 rotations with externships, this is a great text plod through.
I'm only about halfway through, but I like to read a chapter and then review the material in Secrets or Pocket Emergency Medicine, sometimes adding to the latter (in VERY small print) from the great material in this book.
Great Images.......2006-09-29
This book is great and I love the pictures. I am studying for my 10-year recertification and have looked at quite a few of the other books out there, and this book wins, hands-down. The chapters are well-written and the illustrations are great.
This book was money well spent!!!!!!.......2006-01-26
This book is AWESOME. I am a Stanford medical student and found this book to be THE MOST VALUABLE BOOK I HAVE BOUGHT! Why? Several reasons! First, this book is organized differently. Normally, books are organized by system (renal, cardio, pulmonary) and later offer disease descriptions. This book offers a more realistic approach as each chapter explores a symptom and offers multiple diagnosis (this is so valuable or as we say in med school - MONEY!!!) Secondly, this book has end-of-chapter tables with differential diagnoses to help you recall. So if you're seeing a patient with back pain - look at the chart: cauda equine syndrome, back pain, AAA and what test to specifically to distinguish amongst them). Lastly, the book has amazing pictures, is easy to read, colorful, and not at all boring. Trust me: this is a book you will want to read from cover to cover!
Highly Recommended Introduction to Emergency Medicine.......2005-11-29
I am a Haile Debas Academy of Medical Educator, University of Calif San Francisco, School of Medicine, Student Advisor, Attending in Emergency Medicine. I highly recommend this textbook for medical students, residents, nurses, paramedics, and nurse practitioners - basically, anyone who takes care of the undifferentiated patient. The book is organized by chief complaints. It approaches the undifferentiated patient with which key questions to ask and what diagnostic tests to order.
The textbook is user friendly and has quality pictures which are understood easily. I've had experienced nurse and paramedic educators at University of California, San Francisco/San Francisco General Hospital (UCSF/SFGH) recommend this book to nursing and paramedic students. It was helpful for the nurses to know what the physician's differential diagnosis was and why certaiin tests were ordered. Experienced nurse practitioners also found the book easy to use and helpful. The section on "Pearls, Pitfalls and Myths" contributes even more to an otherwise outstanding book.
Excellent text.......2005-10-25
I am a research director in an emergency medicine teaching program. I recently obtained this book after I heard that it was an excellent introductory text. After reviewing the text, I found this assessment to be quite accurate. The book serves as an introductory text for students, residents, or those new to Emergency Medicine and requiring basic foundations, as well as a very user friendly interface. The text comes alive with many color photos, tables, xrays, charts, and drawings - all making for a very nice departure from many more stale texts on the subject. I highly recommend this text and will be suggesting it as a "must have" initial reference for our residents and students.

For over 20 years, Brannon and Feist's HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY: AN INTRODUCTION TO BEHAVIOR AND HEALTH has remained the mainstay in the field of health psychology for its scholarship, strong and current research base, and balanced coverage of the cognitive, behavioral, and biological approaches to health psychology. The text's accessibility for a wide-ranging student audience has been a main ingredient of this book's success. Instructors and students alike will appreciate the concise writing style, ample pedagogy, and visual program in this classic approach to the teaching and learning of health psychology.
Customer Reviews:
Not just for Psychology Students .......2007-02-13
Linda Brannon's book "Health Psychology" is a well-written exegetical analysis and framework for understanding behavior and health. For those who are not serious students of psychology, I would recommend this book for anyone wishing to learn more about dealing with and understanding their own personal issues concerning "stress," "pain," and or methods of "coping." This book provides valuable tips on management of these areas and elucidates well on the symbiotic relationship between behavior and health.
For students of medicine and or psychology, Brannon's book covers such important areas as why people adhere or not adhere to medical advice, the use, and practical applications of placebos, and the behavioral factors in cancer.
Hidden in this text, are the reasons for why dieters succeed or fail in their quest to lose weight and strategies that can be deployed for personal empowerment over eating disorders. Its principles are solid and its information will be relevant for many years to come.
Book Description
Gait analysis is the systematic study of human walking. Most of the literature in this field is highly specialized and very technical. This book, however, aims to brings gait analysis out of the 'ivory tower' of the research laboratory, and to put it where it belongs, in the 'real world' of the clinic. The author has maintained the clear and approachable style that established the first three editions.
