CAN YOU SAY "TYPO".......2007-01-09
I'll be short and sweet about this. So you wanna be an LNHA, I suggest you get a hold of a lot more reading material than just this book. James Allen should be ashamed of his publisher -- there are millions of typos in it, and it is written straight out of the mind of a PH.D.
The book is very convoluted, but does contain much needed information you'll have to have for the NAB test. So too, you should buy the NAB book, along with a book by Hacker. Get ready to take a loan out, these books are not cheap. Then comes the test at $440.00, then another $250.00 for your license. Oh yeah, be sure to buy the test book that comes with this book(for an additional $35.00 or so), it does help.
In sum, I wish studying for the NAB was assigned a single text written in an exact format for which the test was exactly written. How it stands now there are at least three (3) texts (2 listed above and Allen's book) which I stongly recommend -- skip any others, you'll be spending money needlessly!
Good luck to us all and God bless America -- what's left of it.
A core book, with a'lot of problems....................2005-09-23
I'm a few short weeks away from taking the NAB exam to become a licensed nursing facility administrator. This book was the core text for the 5 courses required for licensure (at least it was where I attended, anyway.....to be more specific, it was the only textbook required for all 5 courses) - - a little disturbing when you think about it.
The book is so ripe with typos, it gets to be absolutely laughable......completely unacceptable. The trick, I'm told, to using this book and passing the NAB exam, is to simply train your brain to think like James Allen, PhD.
As a former state nursing facility surveyor (in Texas, no less - -a state that is brutal on nursing homes from a regulatory standpoint), I've seen a'lot of things in nursing homes - - both good things and bad. In one moment, I read Dr. Allen's words and think, "This guy's pretty sharp.", and the next minute, he's prattling on like some idealistic 20 year-old, and I'm thinking, "Has this guy ever actually ran a nursing home in his entire life?" Another core issues is: this guy IS NOT A NURSE and if he knew how much he embarasses himself when trying to talk about clinical issues, he'd stop re-writing this book. Trust me.....if you're over 25 years old, and have spent more than 3 hours handling some part of geriatirc operations, you'll find some of this guy's rambling to be pure comedy. While not relegated completely to geriatrics, this book is proof once again that the whole "gotta pass the board exam"-schtick is growing to be such a gross racket in this nation.
The book will teach you a little bit....primarily about circa 1970's and 1980's generic management theory....which this guy's brain must be totally overloaded with. Funny thing, is: why doesn't the book have photos, line drawings, better graphics? Most of the graphics are centered around teaching you the ADA requirements pretty much as they relate to Life Safety Code requirements- - not altogether worthless, but kind of a cop-out in my opinion.
If you're taking your 5 core courses needed to sit for the NAB exam, you'll probably have to buy this book......sorry about that. Read it, learn what you can from it.....keep the section on personnel managment......then use the remainder of it as confetti for your, "Hey I passed the NAB exam" party!

Interesting...........2007-04-03
Ok, so you want the real scoop, here it is!
In general, this test book, along with Allen's NHA book, is decent study material (just get over the typos and you'll be ok). Why folks complain is because this book, like many others, are filled with opinions, and vague generalities. But here is how you have to study. You buy this book, with the study guide. You buy or borrow the NAB book, and the book by Haacker. You read all three books, and do the study questions... no matter how dumb you think they are. Read Read and Read some more... there is no getting out of studying hard! If it were easy everyone would become an Administrator, right? When you study the test questions I find it is helpful to make up new questions yourself, and ask yourself "why", why is the answer what it is? This is the key to REAL LEARNING. I also recommend you not get bogged down on every single definition in the books, but you must at least get a grasp on what everything means -- this way you should have no surprises.
I hope you read, study, do the questions and make up new ones along the way. Also, call fellow students in your core of knowledge corse to get input. And please, we are all different, so don't go by one person's saying the test is easy (it's not), and don't go by those who flunk, for they did not read read read! Like I say, do your homework and get an excellent grasp on "WHY" "HOW" "WHEN" -- YOU CAN NEVER ASK YOURSELF ENOUGH QUESTIONS! Bottom line, if you study like this YOU WILL PASS! I passed both exams the first go round! I took the NAB test first, then 22 days later I took the State tests. NEVER EVER TAKE BOTH EXAMS ON THE SAME DAY -- YOU WILL BE SORRY IF YOU DO!
I hope this info helps you. I have great faith in the Lord, so there is nothing I cannot pass on the first attempt, I hope the same holds true for you! Good luck, I will let you go now, you should be reading right now, lol.
Gary from Ohio.
Worthless.......2007-01-19
I memorized every single question in this book and still did not pass the NAB test the first time around. DO NOT waste your money!!
Worthless.......2006-07-01
One word-Worthless!!!!!! This book is about a lot of people's different theories on the nursing home industry, uses terms that my administrator had never even heard of, and basically, just makes no sense at all! And to boot, it cost me $50 with shipping. Do not waste your time even thinking about buying it...
Good but not great........2006-01-18
Def. better than nothing but be sure to study everything and not just this book and the green administrators licensure book.
Much better than the green text book.......2005-12-11
A valuable study guide indeed. I passed the NAB exam a few weeks ago....and this book was a huge help.......a wise investment. Also, for what it's worth.......I had a'lot of experience in LTC (Assistant Activity Director, etc.)....I was also a State Nursing Home surveyor for 4.5 years before starting my AIT........listen up: the NAB is the hardest exam I've ever taken in my entire life! It's the kind of test that'll bring you to tears......trust me on this......study like you've never studied before in your life!!
Book Description
This new book outlines key subject matter for long term care activity professionals already working in the field. Thoroughly researched and referenced, this book will provide a comprehensive understanding of all relevent information needed by activity professionals in long term care situations. .
Customer Reviews:
i needed it for class.......2006-03-21
I bought this book because I had to have it for school,
it is full of infromation on activities from history to the
future. it is a must have for anyone in the health care profession
More than the essentials.......2001-07-17
Essentials for the Activity Professional in Long Term Care turned out to be much more than just the essentials. The book is well thought out, and goes into detail when it is needed. I believe that it would be valuable to both the seasoned long term care manager, as well as those new to the field. I particularly liked the "Key Terms" and "Objectives" at the beginning of each chapter, which was great for quickly seeing what REALLY is included in a chapter, which is often difficult to tell in textbooks just from the chapter title. The book also includes facsimiles of actual forms in the documentation section, and there is nothing quite like seeing the real thing. A very well rounded look at long term care. Lots of pictures and charts keep things moving along, and there are self-assessment exams. I would recommend this book to anyone in long term care, regardless of their position.

Merck Pharmaceuticals have edited a clear and comprehensive reference for older adults. Dr. Mark Beers begins with the age-old questions: when does a person become old and why does the body change? The remainder of this guide is divided into preventive and active care for self and others. The list of topics is a virtual everything you want to know about aging: nutritional needs, finding a doctor, understanding tests, surgery and rehabilitation, and long term care. More than one hundred specific medical conditions including fractures, constipation, tinnitus, dental disease, and dementia are explained and cross referenced with useful details. Although a clinical explanatory model prevails, non-traditional methods such as acupuncture and homeopathy receive honorable mention. The guide takes an unflinching look at sexuality, end of life decisions, and mistreatment of elderly adults. Other practical c! hapters are devoted to driving dilemmas and navigating the Byzantine financing of health care. This information is punctuated with essays from older adults--including a cheeky Max Sendak cartoon. The essays, along with charts, photos, and illustrations help to lessen the book's encyclopedic tone. Many older adults and the people who care for them will welcome the well-organized format and richly detailed information of this guide. --Barbara Mackoff

Best I've Seen on Elder Care.......2007-07-21
This manual is the best manual of information I have seen, and will be recommending it on my website for eldercaregive info for those who want the information in print.
Good coverage -- but a little dumbed down........2007-03-26
This seems to be an abridgment of all the material found in the Merck Manual home addition of relevance to aging or typical diseases of aging. It is missing some of the detail, and my guess is that there are better books for a more sophisticated older reader, including the Merck Manual itself. It is printed in relatively large type. There is an enormous quantity of common sensical repetition, such as the trope about "people tend to slow down a bit as they age". This mantra is repeated in one form or another every few pages.
Good basic medical review.......2006-11-10
This book is a very good "first look" for general medical info...better written than most of the info on the 'net...
This is a book for every home.......2006-08-27
Everyone should have this book on their book shelf. Well written, comprehensive and clarifies medical questions and concerns. Don't even hesitate for a moment to purchase this book.
Merck Manual of Health & Aging.......2006-08-06

Book Description
The American Association of Retired Persons estimates that the number of communities for seniors has doubled in the past ten years and will more than double again before the turn of the century. With estimated annual revenues of $14 billion, the industry is expected to grow dramatically -- to $30 billion by the year 2000. This explosive growth has meant that new administrators and staff often are learning by trial and error the complicated task of delivering high-quality and consistent services to elderly persons. While many new facilities have been successful, others have found themselves plagued by a variety administrative and financial difficulties. Operators, developers, lenders, and staff members are attending conferences in record numbers, eager for practical answers to management challenges.
In Senior Living Communities Benjamin Pearce offers the first comprehensive guide to managing these important facilities. Drawing on years of experience running successful retirement communities, Pearce offers a wealth of sound advice and practical solutions. He discusses operating methods, staffing ratios, department management, cost containment, sales and marketing strategies, techniques of financial analysis, budgeting, and human resources. He also offers specific details on resident relations, transportation, activities, food service, housekeeping, laundry, and maintenance. An extensive operations audit is included in an appendix.
As Americans of the baby boom generation approach their senior years, society must prepare a strategy for accommodating this burgeoning population. Senior Living Communities will prove an indispensable source of information and advice on various aspects of these rapidly growing facilities, including development, finance, investment, operations, improvement, and marketing.

Outdated Information.......2007-01-11
When I received a e-mail advertising this book, I thought it was new material. Out of the box, the browning faded paper told me that this was a very old publication, not worth looking at. The changes in the industry in the last few years have been such that current information is essential. I returned the book within 24 hours. It advertising material to potential readers, it should be made clear that this is very outdated material and not a new edition or remotely current information.
Really good for those interested in assisted living needs.......2003-02-11
I needed information on how to finance, build and market senior housing. The information in this book on elderly and handicapped housing needs is really helpful to me. This is well done, and those of us not part of the industry can understand it.
An essential part of your long-term care management library........2003-01-25
Pearce has done an excellent job of writing a sentinel primer for managing long-term care communities. The details are all there. Of even greater importance, the details are presented within the context of critical principles that distinguish the excellent community from the average or mediocre. As a faculty member responsible for a number of long-term care management courses at two schools of public health, this is one of a very limited number of texts that I assign as "must reads" for my students.
A Detailed and Complete Guide on Senior Living Communities.......2003-01-22
I truly enjoyed "Senior Living Communities: Operations Management and Marketing for Assisted Living, Congregate, and Continuing Care Retirement Communities". It answered most of the questions that I had on developing a community for senior living. I feel a social calling to provide for the housing and care needs of the elderly. The Senior Care track was adopted as a part of the Masters of Real Estate degree that I am enrolled in. This book was used in one of my classes. What a blessing! As I began to read this book, I realized that most of the "concise details" in developing a community are all in there. I am so amazed to see such valuable information each time I turn the page. The author has addressed the obvious and the important things that often are forgotten. This book is like the bible of developing successful senior living communities. The knowledge gained by reading this book will definitely create the foundation for the development of a successful project.
Senior Living Communities.......2002-01-22
Though this book may have been intended as a how-to for Benjamin Pearce's colleagues in the trade, it is thoroughly readable and complete. As someone who contemplates eventual entry into a Continuing Care Retirement Community, I found explanations for much that I have observed in the community where my own parents reside as well as what I have seen in the near dozen that I have toured. The intelligent consumer could not find a better way to be educated about the subject than to delve into the outline of management and practices that the author details. This will be a useful handbook for me for hopefully many years to come.
Book Description
By the year 2030, older Americans will make up nearly one quarter of the population. The rapid growth of this population segment puts increased importance on the analysis of existing social policy regarding the responsibilities of caring for older adults. This book provides a comprehensive overview of current community resources available to elderly Americans, including both public and private programs.
While knowledge of the community resources that are available is vital, the authors also stress the importance of the theoretical knowledge that will assist in understanding the social and psychological dynamics of help seeking behavior. Deeper understanding of the social and psychological needs of the elderly and their families, as well as the services that are available them, will better prepare students and practitioners to take advantage of resources available to their clients.
New to this Edition
The Second Edition includes updated information about various programs and services, including the newly authorized Older Americans Act and changes in Social Security and Medicare. In addition, new information about health care for retired veterans, updated best practices, and Web resources are provided.

- A discussion of theories that help predict service use, thus offering readers a framework for understanding why older adults do or do not use services

Book Description
The fields of health care, aging, and social work are often treated as discrete entities, while all social workers deal with issues of health and aging on a daily basis, regardless of practice specialization. The Handbook of Social Work in Health and Aging is the first reference to address this reality by compiling the most current thinking on these subjects in a single volume. With the population of older adults increasing as rapidly as new possibilities for their care, professionals need an accessible source of specialized information about how best to serve the elderly and their families, and they will find this authoritative handbook indispensable. In 100 original chapters, the most experienced and prominent gerontological health care scholars in the United States and across the world provide social workers with up-to-date knowledge of evidence-based practice guidelines for effectively assessing and treating older adults and supporting their families. The contributing authors paint rich portraits of a variety of populations that social workers serve and arenas in which they practice, followed by detailed recommendations of best practices for an array of physical and mental health conditions. Its unprecedented attention to diversity, global trends, and implications for research, government policy, and education make the publication of such a compendium a major event in the field of gerontological social work. Ambitious and multi-dimensional, this handbook represents the best research on health and aging available to social workers today.

The Handbook is a godsend for people desiring one-stop shopping for information about older adults and health topics. Chapters cover almost every imaginable disease in the beginning, and then go on to look at social conditions and population diversity among older Americans, and also has a section on aging as an international topic.

Practical Guide for Nursing Home Social Workers.......2007-08-13
This is a very practical guide for social workers in this field of practice. It explains, in clear language, everything from the regulatory aspects of social work in a nursing home to appropriate roles and functions. As a former nursing home social worker (now researcher/ educator), I would consider this a "must have" for those in the field.
Book Description
"For some years now, Tom Kitwood's work on dementia care has stood out as the most important, innovative and creative development in a field that has for too long been neglected. This book is a landmark in dementia care; it brings together, and elaborates on, Kitwood's theory of dementia and of person-centred care in an accessible fashion, that will make this an essential source for all working and researching in the field of dementia care."
-Robert Woods, Professor of Clinical Psychology, University of Wales
"Over the last ten years or so Tom Kitwood has made a truly remarkable contribution to our understanding of dementia, and to raising expectations of what can be achieved with empathy and skill. This lucid account of his thinking and work will communicate his approach to a yet wider audience. It is to be warmly welcomed."
-Mary Marshall, Director of the Dementia Services Development Centre, University of Stirling
* What is the real nature of the dementing process?
* What might we reasonably expect when dementia care is of very high quality?
* What is required of organizations and individuals involved in dementia care?
Tom Kitwood breaks new ground in this book. Many of the older ideas about dementia are subjected to critical scrutiny and reappraisal, drawing on research evidence, logical analysis and the author's own experience. The unifying theme is the personhood of men and women who have dementia - an issue that was grossly neglected for many years both in psychiatry and care practice.
Each chapter provides a definitive statement on a major topic related to dementia, for example: the nature of 'organic mental impairment', the experience of dementia, the agenda for care practice, and the transformation of the culture of care.
While recognizing the enormous difficulties of the present day, the book clearly demonstrates the possibility of a better life for people who have dementia, and comes to a cautiously optimistic conclusion. It will be of interest to all professionals involved in dementia care or provision, students on courses involving psychogeriatrics or social work with older people, and family carers of people with dementia.
Key features:
* One of the few attempts to present the whole picture.
* Very readable - many real-life illustrations.
* Offers a major alternative to the 'medical model' of dementia.
* Tom Kitwood's work on dementia is very well known
