    Book Description

The Oxford Textbook of Medicine provides all that any doctor needs to know to practise top-level internal medicine. It gives comprehensive coverage of the epidemiology, aetiology, and mechanism of disease, as well as clear, unambiguous coverage of the diagnosis, practical management and prevention of the entire spectrum of medical disorders. There are major introductory sections on the scientific basis of disease; and in the system-based clinical sections genetic predisposition, pathophysiology, pathogenesis, molecular mechanisms, and cell biology are covered in depth for all significant medical syndromes. Clinical descriptions of diseases are clearly and memorably written, based on the experience and insight of the authors -- many of whom are among the world's most distinguished medical scientists. Chapters are not only "evidence based" but also based on clinical experience and a thorough survey of all the relevant literature. Throughout, the approach of OTM is humane and ethical and, at the same time, factual, reliable, honest (especially where knowledge is limited) and rigorously scientific. This is not just a textbook of "First World" medicine. It provides practical guidance for doctors working in a variety of medical settings, stressing the value of a logical clinical approach rather than immediate resort to expensive imaging and laboratory tests. More of the contributing authors than ever before are from outside Europe, including strong representation of North American medicine. The new editorial team has ensured that the OTM continues to reflect rapid changes in medical practice; there are new sections on intensive care, alcohol and drug abuse, clinical pharmacology and therapeutics, world health, clinical trials and evidence-based medicine, adolescent medicine, sports medicine, and emergency medicine; more than half the contributors are new for this edition; and most of the text has been heavily revised. The striking new page and cover design reflect the significant changes made in this new edition. The Textbook is illustrated by over 2000 two-colour diagrams and many colour Plates. The index is the most detailed and user-friendly of any major medical textbook: in an emergency, the reader can access information quickly - whether on the ward, in office or at home. Like its predecessors, OTM4 will be the trusted and ultimate reference in libraries, hospitals, doctors' consulting rooms, solicitors' offices, press offices, and primary care practices worldwide.

      Book Description

The 'Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine' has firmly established itself as the definitive book on the subject and is highly acclaimed world-wide. This new edition has been significantly revised and updated to reflect the enormous changes in palliative care over the last five years. Two new international co-editors, Nathan Cherny and Sir Kenneth Calman, have been recruited and bring vast experience to the book. The new edition includes sixty-six completely new chapters and contributors. New sections and chapters devoted exclusively to such non-malignant conditions as cardiac disease, non-malignant respiratory disease, non-malignant neurological disease and AIDS have been added as well as new chapters on palliative medicine in intensive care and geriatric care, and complementary and alternative therapies in palliative medicine. There is a brand new section on the contributions to palliative care of occupational therapists, physiotherapists, music- , art- and speech- therapists, stoma therapists, clinical pharmacists and clinical psychologists. Every chapter used in the first two editions have been radically reviewed and brought up-to-date. There are authoritative international contributions from over 150 renowned experts. The book is written for doctors, specialist palliative medicine physicians, oncologists, geriatricians, surgeons, family physicians, neurologists and chest physicians. We know, however, that it is much used by nurses and researchers in other disciplines, though not written primarily for them.

5 out of 5 stars Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine 3e.......2004-02-02

It's here. What we've all been waiting for. The third edition of the OTPM. And it does not disappoint.

This edition looks to be largely re-written, not just up-dated, and there are many new contributors. There is a new section on the palliation of non-malignant disease, which I think will be particularly useful for the majority of us who deal primarily with advanced cancer. New chapters deal with the role of each of the allied health professionals who make up the multidisciplinary team. There are also new chapters on the principles of evidence-based medicine and on learning communication skills, both of which I think are particularly welcome.

It is not possible to review each section of what is a very large textbook. Overall, it provides good coverage of the whole field of palliative medicine. Duplication, as may occur in any multi-authored text, has been kept to a minimum. Although it has about the same number of pages, the use of a smaller (but very legible) font gives the impression that this edition is considerably larger and has a lot more information than the previous one. I have to declare that I wrote the chapter on HIV/AIDS in Adults, about which nothing more will be said, but had nothing else to do with the production of this book.

Is it up to date? I browsed a few areas where practice has changed in the last few years and found good coverage for selective COX-2 inhibitors, NMDA receptor antagonists and interventional radiology, although the usefulness of low molecular weight heparins in palliative care has not been emphasized.

Is it worth it? The book is not cheap by anybody's standards. But the answer has to be yes because this book will remain the gold standard reference in palliative medicine for the next few years at least. The editors are to be congratulated on the successful completion of what is a very impressive reference. And all who work in palliative medicine owe a debt of gratitude to Derek Doyle, who has now pioneered this book through three editions.

        Book Description

This book is the first authoritative, systematic and comprehensive text to define the increasingly important and evolving specialty of paediatric palliative care. It explores both the clinical aspects and the multidimensional and holistic nature of care for the dying child, based on the knowledge that all human experience has a physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual impact. The book covers ways of providing support in all of these areas both for the child, families, and carers, recognising the importance of teamwork and taking an evidence-based approach. The Oxford Textbook of Palliative Care for Children is about the care of children for whom cure of their underlying disease is not possible. It encompasses the physical management of symptoms such as pain and nausea, as well as social issues such as accessing appropriate education and funding, emotional issues such as techniques for communication, and spiritual issues such as feelings of guilt and isolation. The book suggests that if we are to maintain the quality of life for a child it is essential to recognise all these dimensions and try to address them. This can only be done by recognising the skills of a wide range of professionals and working together in ways that are not always intuitive to any one discipline. It explores the multidimensional and holistic nature of care for the dying child. Those working in paediatric palliative care recognise that all human experience has emotional, psychological and spiritual impact as well as physical, and this book attempts to find ways of providing support in all these.

        Book Description

The Oxford Textbook of Sports Medicine is the first major work to cover the whole of this rapidly expanding field. Exceptional contributions from world renowned professionals in sports medicine provide the most comprehensive and authoritative reference work yet compiled, successfully combining
sports science with an extraordinary breadth of coverage. The Oxford textbook of Sports Medicine presents a comprehensive analysis of the physiology of exercise in health and disease and relates this to the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of sports related trauma and injuries , with an emphasis
on acute and chronic overuse injuries. This major reference brings together contributions from many related disciplines, stressing throughout that optimum athletic performance relies on a combination of a wide variety of factors. One unique feature of this book is the extensive coverage of the
influences of environmental factors such as altitude and heat, so often neglected in other texts on sports medicine.

The Oxford Textbook of Sports Medicine sets a new standard in sports medicine publishing for specialists in sports medicine, orthopaedic and trauma surgeons, team coaches, physiotherapists, PE students, and athletes themselves.

This is a highly readable, yet authoritative and definitive reference which will benefit everyone committed to the care of sports men and women.

5 out of 5 stars Sports Medicine? It's here! Very Good!.......2001-08-26

This edition goes with excellent design, making of "Oxford Textbook of Sports Medicine" an intellectual and didactic attractive. Moreover, in this second edition the sections are reviewed, having important topics for physicians and all people interesting in sports medicine. The chapters are completes and concise in the same time, a great point for the editors, authors and principally for readers. In the beginning, the book presents a brief review of exercise physiology, following with general topics in sports as nutrition and growing. After, some chapters show for the reader some of the most common injuries in sports, having special considerations the injuries in ankle and knee. The last chapters describe about special populations in sports, as women in pregnancy and elders. I really recommend this book.

        Book Description

Unequivocally the most relevant and important European textbook of clinical nephrology. This is the most authoritative, well written and comprehensive textbook of clinical nephrology combining the clinical aspects of renal disease important for the daily clinical practice whilst giving extensive information about the underlying basic science and current evidence available. This new edition highlights the numerous changes in clinical management that have arisen as a result of recently concluded clinical trials and there are now specific formal guidelines for optimal treatment of patients. Each section of the textbook has been critically and comprehensively edited under the auspices of one of the leading experts in the field. The text for this third edition has been ruthlessly edited, balanced, updated and pitched at the adult nephrologist. The emphasis throughout is on marrying advances in scientific research with clinical management. Where possible treatment algorithms are included to aid patient care. By comparison with other texts, Oxford Textbook of Clinical Nephrology has more than average coverage of paediatric issues. For this edition there has been increased focus on age and renal disease, nephrology as practised in countries of different stages of socio-economic development, evidence-based nephrology, clinical outcomes, clinical audit and moral and ethical issues. Richly illustrated throughout in full colour this is truly a modern and attractive edition with comprehensive coverage of everything that has to do with clinical nephrology written by the world's experts in the respective fields. A major advantage is inclusion of a fully searchable CD-ROM packaged with this edition.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointingly obtuse and bulky.......2007-04-12

I have often used the OTN, but rarely been impressed by its relevance or its lucidity. Some chapters seem to specialise in wading through an interesting and important subject with remarkably dull and often inapposite focus on matters of little real clinical interest, and often its lengthy reviews end in inconclusive summaries. Prof Barsoum's chapter is one of the shining exceptions.
Probably a necessary purchase for a practising renal physician keen to have comprehensive sources, but for me not a joyous parting with this much money.

          Book Description

The Oxford Textbook of Primary Medical Care is arranged in two volumes for ease of reference, offering you two very different reference resources. Volume 1 - Principles and Concepts Volume 1 is a unique and exhaustive guide to the theory and principles underpinning primary care, including: * doctor-patient interaction * practice management * the public health role of the primary care team * health care systems throughout the world * ensuring and enhancing quality of care This volume emphasises the wide range of disciplines involved in primary care, covering medical sociology, health psychology, epidemiology, and the principles of organisational management, and providing concise, detailed sections on research, education, and ethics and law. Volume 2 - Clinical Management In Volume 2, more than 200 chapters form a comprehensive clinical textbook on medical problems commonly seen in general practice worldwide. Here you will find detailed evidence-based guidance on diagnosis, investigation, and management. Because each section has been written by GPs and hospital specialists working in partnership, you can be confident that these accounts are not only authoritative, but also uniquely focused on the information most relevant to primary care. Each chapter takes a broad perspective, assuring its relevance for physicians and health care systems at different levels of development, emphasising core clinical principles of diagnosis and management and considering the broader public health and health economics implications of each problem. From the Foreword, by Professor Ian R McWhinney: 'Primary care physicians have to know where they are on the scale of the complementarities between organismic and mechanistic, uncertainty and precision, involvement and detachment, concrete and abstract, and the particular and the general publication of the Oxford Textbook of Primary Medical Care will, I hope, be a milestone in the development of primary care medicine.'

            Book Description

In May 1994 The American Psychiatric Association published the most recent version of DSM-IV, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. DSM-IV is the primary diagnostic reference for mental health professionals in psychiatry, psychology, social work, and nursing. It provides brief descriptions of mental disorders in terms of their primary and associated features, age at onset, typical course, level of impairment, predisposing factors, complications, prevalence, sex ratio, and familial patterns. Although DSM-IV is one of the primary training and reference tools for mental health professionals, its scope and utility are limited. It is explicitly designed to be a diagnostic manual and therefore contains little regarding treatment -- the next step after diagnosis. Child and Adolescent Psychological Disorders: A Comprehensive Textbook mirrors the organization of DSM-IV but goes beyond a listing of diagnostic criteria by addressing what to do after the diagnosis is made. The text includes selections written by experts in both clinical psychology and psychiatry. Each chapter reviews the current research and provides diagnostic and assessment criteria, treatment recommendations, and assessment strategies for each disorder. An ideal text for courses in child and adolescent psychopathology and clinical psychology, Child and Adolescent Psychological Disorders: A Comprehensive Textbook is also an excellent reference for practitioners.

5 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Introduction to the Speciality.......2007-04-09

Having been lucky enough to work with a wide range of ages in my nursing practice, I see the value of this book in delineating the very particular nature of dealing with childhood-specific presentations of psychological phenomenon. This book brought me up to speed on this matter when I switched from geropsychiatric and adult psychiatric care to pediatric psych. This book gave me the resources to understand many of the complications seen with the pediatric population and made the transition from adult to child practice much easier.

            5 out of 5 stars An excellent, research-based resource........2002-10-10

In studying psychopathology I have come to appreciate that there is a world of difference between how an adult presents, and how a child presents. I firmly believe that counselor training programs should focus on child psychopathology in addition to studying general psychopathology, and this book should be used as the primary text.

This book goes a long way in illuminating the differences in children's mental health issues. Child psychology is in another universe and the practioner would do well to consult this comprehensive resource that contains articles by leading practioners in the field.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, brilliant discussion of a major social issue.......1999-11-17

Perhaps the most crucial social issue of our time is addressed in as comprehensive and skillful a manner as I have seen. Of particular value is chapter 21, "Impulse Control Disorders Not Elsewhere Classified," wherein Steven Thurber and associate, clarify and successfully delineate a long-time problem within the monumentally crucial arena of Disorders of the Young. This specific chapter, in tandem with the overall approach of the book, affords the reader the valuable distinction between generally accepted mythical and unsubstantiated beliefs (i.e., beliefs that are almost "Hollywood-like" portrayals and "theories" of human behavior), and scientifically demonstrated and supported realities of the human condition.
