Book Description
This comprehensive work on all aspects of soils includes introductory chapters on soil morphology, physics, mineralogy and organisms in anticipation of the more advanced analysis of the subject that follows. Replete with hundreds of high-quality figures and a large glossary, its global perspective makes it an invaluable text for anyone studying soils, landforms and landscape change in middle to upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses.
Customer Reviews:
A long time coming!.......2007-07-11
This book was begging to be written for the longest time. Thank goodness Randy went ahead and did it. The book fills a void in soil science by linking soil formation and geomorphology, an obvious connection. It is well-written in terms of organization and style. I can tell that Randy certainly enjoys studying soils, as his enthusiasm pours off the pages. Not only that, but he and his co-author clearly have the knowledge and background to put forth such a work.
I recommend this book for anyone interested in soils, but especially for a college-level text book for any soils-related course.
Very good resource for geographers.......2007-01-18
The subject matter is geared toward providing an understanding of soils and landforms from an earth systems perspective rather than agronomy. I'd buy this title over P. Birkeland's work, though I have both. Extensive bibliography.
Downside: given the technology now available for reproducing clear b/w photos, students and researchers deserve better. Don't soils have color as well?!
Great review.......2006-11-10
Book was delivered fast and I found it a good quality product. Would recommend purchasing from them again.
Easy to read - well written.......2006-07-11
It's hard to imagine a soils textbook that is an easy read, but this is it. The authors have a way of making dull material interesting. The writing style is very smooth and flows well. Kudos to them.

Book Description
Rapid progress in sedimentology began in the 1960's and is continuing today. Not only has knowledge increased rapidly, but technology has as well. Small and inexpensive, but powerful, computers are changing the ways in which we gather, record, and analyze our data or test ideas. The pedagogical value of this text is evident in its careful approach to the discipline. Not only is the text technologically oriented (e.g. graphs of mathematical functions are programmed for automatic digital computation and plotting), the author has taken great care to consider the standard petrographic methods as well. Embracing the subdisciplines of sedimentary petrology, sedimentation, and stratigraphy, the text describes the composition, texture, and structure of all kinds of sedimentary rocks; the physical, chemical, and biological processes that create sediments are also considered. Examples of ancient and modern depositional and diagenetic systems serve to illustrate the scientific methods by which sedimentary process and product are described and diagnosed. This text is ideal for students of geology who have acquired a basic knowledge of mineralogy, petrology, and stratigraphy, and are ready to apply these skills to an exciting and challenging field.

Conservation of Leather and Related Materials (Conservation and Museology)
ASIN: 0750638982 |
Book Description
One of the problems which beset the practical conservation of stone buildings is the fragmentation of the disciplines involved. This book, with both volumes now available as one invaluable paperback, brings these disciplines together by the involvement of contributors with different experiences and approaches to the same material.
Part one is an introduction to the complexities and background history of stone conservation followed by the most comprehensive description yet produced of the building and decorative stones used in the British Isles.
In part two, practitioners involved in stone conservation describe ways in which major structural masonry problems, secondary building problems and different stone surface conditions may be treated. A variety of building types and environments has been used to ensure that the broad scope of common problems is covered. This second part of the book will be of practical value to art historians, archaeologists, architects, surveyors and engineers, masonry contractors and sculpture conservators in solving problems and in learning to use each other's skills and experience.
Highly illustrated
Two informative volumes brought together in a new paperback edition
Excellent authorial combination
Customer Reviews:
Basic for architects, conservators and stone collectors!.......2000-05-08
This is that kind of books that tell us everything about a scientific topic that we need to learn with basic knowledge. The authors help us to understand the nature of stones and the better way to conserve its characteristics for the future, everywhere you need to apply it: museums, buildings and particular collections. Perhaps the most important contents are the necessary methods and materials you must to apply in order to conserve and/or restore the original values of different kind of stone works. It is definitively a great help for architects, conservators and owners of stone collections.

Book Description
Comprehensive, up-to-date coverage of the basics of soil chemistry
Although only a meter in depth over the earth's surface, soil is key to sustaining life-affecting air and water quality, the growth of plants and crops, and the health of the entire planet. The complex interplay among organic and inorganic solids, air, water, microorganisms, and plant roots in soil is the subject of Soil
Chemistry, a reference pivotal to understanding soil processes and problems.
Thoroughly reorganized for ease of use, this updated Third Edition of
Soil Chemistry summarizes the important research and fundamental knowledge in the field in a single, readily usable text, including:
- Soil-ion interactions
- Biogeological cycles and pollution
- Water and soil solutions
- Oxidation and reduction
- Inorganic solid phase and organic matter in soil
- Weathering and soil development
- Cation retention (exchange)
- Anion and molecular retention
- Acid and salt-affected soils
New to the Third Edition is an enhanced emphasis on soil solution chemistry and expanded coverage of phosphate chemistry and the chemical principles of the aqueous phase. At the same time, the book has retained the clear examination of the fundamentals of the science of soil that has distinguished earlier editions. Complete with SI units and end-of-chapter study questions, Soil Chemistry is an excellent introductory resource for students studying this crucial topic.
Customer Reviews:
Short and simple.......2007-03-09
This one of the best books available for understanding the basics of soil chemistry. IF you are a novice or having to take a course go for it because it covers most of the aspect of soil chemistry in a very simple language.
One drawback I could think of is that there are no example problems in any chapter, though the exercises ask you some challenging problems to solve.

Book Description
Soils and Geomorphology, now in its third edition, remains popular among soil scientists, geomorphologists, geologists, geographers, and archaeologists. While retaining the useful "factors of soil formation format," it has been extensively revised, incorporating a considerable amount of new research and offering a greater number of topics and examples -- particularly in the chapters "Weathering and Soil Development with Time" and "Topography: Soil Relations with Time in Different Climatic Settings." Greater emphasis is placed on the role of dust in pedogenesis, and new data are included on tropical soil development, global soil-loess relations, neotectonics, and reduction processes. The text discusses field applications such as the use of soils in recognizing climate change, estimating the age of geological deposits, and dealing with environmental problems such as acid rain. New "how-to" appendices on soil descriptions and calculating the profile development index are also included. Soils and Geomorphology is an ideal text for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in courses on pedology, soil science, Quaternary geology, archeology, and sedimentary petrology.
Customer Reviews:
Breadth, Depth, and Specifics.......2006-02-25
The process is pedogenesis and this book will tell you what you want to know. I'm using this book in a class I am taking and I would recommend it to anyone who is seriously thinking about wanting to understand soils in a more geomorphologic and geologic perspective. Not a light read, but definitely not a traditional textbook either. The extensive references section will also help to lead you in other directions you may wish to take in order to find more on specific studies and research papers.
soil from earth.......2000-06-20
I read this book for one of my graduate courses. Totaly this is a good book for people who know about soil science, but the weakness of this book is using too much terms which are not explained in this book. So, if you do not have a very good back ground in geology, it will be difficult for you to understand some parts of this book and you need a geology dictionary to read this book.

Book Description
This book provides the first comprehensive review of the available information on the ecology of recently-deglaciated terrain and critically evaluates the methodology currently employed in such studies. The theme developed is that the ecology of these regions can only be fully understood by giving due consideration to the role and interaction of both physical and biological processes in the development of the landscape. By adopting this geoecological approach, the spatial variation and dynamics of vegetation and soils is considered in relation to other aspects of the landscape such as topographic variation, climate, and geomorphic processes. A geoecological model is thus outlined that provides both a framework for interpreting the varied ecological nature of glacier forelands found throughout the world, and also an agenda for future research.
