"The Book".......2006-11-02
The "Bible" for structural engineers for decades past and present. Updated and a "must have" for the structural design engineer. The place to start when a new problem is encountered.
Useful resource.......2004-03-17
It's a book with many useful information, tables and examples. A really valued reference.
Unit problem.......1999-07-18
This book is quite good but its usability is lost to a great extent because it is not written in Metric units. Also, chapters on computer application are not well written
Book Description
The Construction Manuals from Edition Detail are among the most important reference works in the specialist literature. The latest volume shows the potential of the material concrete and documents comprehensively the technical principles of using concrete in construction. Chapters cover the history of the material, the properties of concrete, reinforced concrete, and prestressed concrete, the treatment of its surface. Also covered are the basic principles of statics for large and small structures, and the building requirements with respect to heat, damp, sound-proofing and fire protection according to the most recent norms and standards. Finally a large number of built examples are presented from illustrations of the complete structure down to detailed plans, showing the broad spectrum of applications for concrete in contemporary building. All plans have been specially produced by the editorial department Detail for this book and for ease of comparison, they have been drawn to the same scale.

German through and through.......2003-05-29
Craftsmanship is to the Germans what style is to the French, tradition is to the British, or independence is to the Americans, and it shows in these books: the drawings, coated paper, printing, and so on are all head and shoulders above the competition. The basic format for all the books is the same--history, followed by science and engineering, followed by examples. In this book, the technical section emphasizes structural matters, with a large chapter on precast construction. There's nothing on reinforcement requirements because they're covered in building codes. Shell structures are discussed, and another chapter covers surface finishes. The translation to English is OK but lacks the nuances that make for pleasant reading.
Too bad there is nothing for the US architect of this quality, because all the technical references are to German or European standards. But they're educational nonetheless.

Fantastic for the price!.......2004-03-04
When I first bought this book I wondered if it would be out-of-date. It wasn't. Although there were many tricks I've learned that weren't in the book, I did catch many new formwork techniques from this book. I'd recommend it to anyone learning to set forms on a residential or light commercial construction site.

PCI Design Handbook, 5th Edition.......2007-08-09
Original book damaged via USPS (Left in rain). Replaced with new at no charge. I couldn't be happier with the end product!!!!!!!!
These are good honest people.
PCI HANDBOOK.......2000-10-15
As engineer - this handbook will show you practical design experience (from tiltup to prestress precast concrete connection and etc). University classes will typically not teach that subject. So for young engineer - just like myself - BUY ONE - you will not regret it. The price a bit high but you might get it directly from PCI
The "Bible" of Precast/Prestressed Concrete Design!.......2000-06-15
This book is indeed a "Bible" to Engineers who are involved with the design of precast and prestressed concrete structures. this book is presented very well and covers almost all aspects of design of such structures. However, it should be noted that this book is primarily intended for Structural Engineers. Of course, sometime you may need to refer to other more specialized books in order to perform a design. But this book is more than adequate for general precast/prestressed design. I am giving this book a 5-star rating because this book is essential to a designer (as a standard code book), plus because of the added advantage of usability (unlike many code books)!

I use this as a masonry reference book.......2007-01-12
This book covers all aspects of masonry work, from new construction through repair. As a carpenter, I have previous experience with some of the basics of the topics covered, and I would feel confident following the procedures in the book to complete any of the projects listed.
As with any work of this nature, there's a reason why some people do this professionally -- there's a lot that takes experience to learn. But, if you know a few basics you'll probably be glad to have this book as a reference.
Book Description
Combining basic-to-advanced instruction and exciting projects, this complete guide shows how to build paths, patios, and walls using all manner of masonry, including brick, stone, tile, and concrete. It helps readers plan structures, choose materials, and select the right tools for the job. Great Book.......2007-03-12
This is a very well done book, and I enjoyed it very much. It has nice projetcs that you really can do by yourself. The pictures are wonderfull, and full of great ideas and details. The instructions are so clear, so anybody can understand easly.
book.......2007-01-16
I was looking for a book on how to build a brick mailbox. This did'nt help much. Thanks anyway.
Good book for the home improvement weekender.......2005-04-21
I bought Sunset's "Complete Masonry" because I am thinking about using concrete for my next kitchen counter top. I had heard on a radio home improvement program that concrete kitchen counters are popular in some other countries. Complete Masonry has one chapter on concrete counter tops, but the example they give is an outdoor barbecue, not a kitchen. The techniques can be adapted to a kitchen, but it's not the same as having illustrations of specifically what I want to do.
Other than that, Complete Masonry has lots of information for the home gardener or handy person. You get pictures and details for laying out and construction of walks, stairs, patios, walls, ponds, rock gardens and all kinds of decorative and imaginative masonry work around the home. It's aimed at the home improvement market, not for the professional mason, although a professional might get some creative ideas from it's illustrations. Complete Masonry starts with very basic teaching such as "what is a shovel" and works up to include all the details you would need to construct the projects in the book. Like a lot of Sunset books it's full of ideas and examples of very elaborate projects, though the projects appear to have been done by skilled professionals. Even so, with a little practice you could probably finish any of the projects if you have a little construction skill and are willing to do the work. It's a good idea book, and a practical how-to home improvement book.
Loved this book!.......2004-02-16
Sunset has published several books on this subject, 3 of them called "Complete Masonry" with different subtitles and a basic one, possibly others. This is the only one that I've actually gone through cover to cover and it is superb. I have the Black and Decker flavor of Complete Masonry too and this one is far better at 1/2 the price.
The projects described are quite a bit more appealing than the B&D's plain cookie cutter boring wall and walkway offerings. More importantly this book offers better techniques of design that can be applied to your own unique design.
Another of my favorites on the subject of concrete that is also applicable to walls, walkways, flooring or whatever else you wish to conjure is a book called "Concrete Countertops: Design, Form, and Finishes for the New Kitchen and Bath" It actually offers much more than what the title leads you to believe and suggests concrete as a very versitle replacement for standard brick and tile uses of the past.

Not the absolute authority..........2002-06-03
I was very dissapointed in this work. The project for which this book was purchased was a block basement and concrete foundation for a new home in southern California. I had hoped that there would be some help in developing techniques and other practical helps. This book was inadequate in these areas. I also discovered that the estimation formulas were inconsistent and inacurate for the project I used it on. I'm sure that this book is applicable in some areas of the country but not in the desert southwest. I also discovered that some of the materials and suggestions are unheard of by professionals in my area (like "Bitumen Modified Urethane"). I would not recommend purchasing this book unless there is no other alternative.
Not for the beginner.......2001-07-21
I wanted to learn how to build things out of brick and this book was a big disappointment. It uses terms that you would not know if you were not already involved in the construction industry. There are lots of technical discussions about masonry but not one "hands-on" example of laying brick. I went back and bought the Black and Decker book to learn how to actually work with masonry and I will keep this book for reference on different types of mortars, estimating materials, etc. If you made your living working with masonry this would make a good reference.
Masonry and Concrete Construction; Nolan.......2000-06-18
Nolan's Masonry and Concrete Construction is an excellent introduction to the many forms of brick, block, and concrete materials applications. Beginning with the theory and chemistry of concrete and mortar formulation, he then goes chapter by chapter into the various applications. The book is well illustrated with photos and drawings, as well as charts and tables to assist in computations of mixes, materials requirements, load capabilities of footings, etc. A look at the table of contents shows the wide range of subjects discussed. An appendix with regulations for job safety (OSHA) will be useful for those in the trades. The book is well-written in an easy-to-read style. If you have ever experienced the frustration of trying to lay brick with the wrong mortar mixture, (or want to avoid the problems!) this book is for you. The book deals with man-made materials (brick, block, concrete); there is little discussion of stone construction techniques, so that is better found elsewhere.
Book Description
-Covers stucco, glass block, hypertufa and tile in addition to traditional masonry materials.

Great set of starter projects.......2005-01-23
This book is designed for the suburban home owner with access to a 'warehouse' style hardware store. It covers the tools available at your hardware store and how to use them for your masonry projects. A variety of projects are outlined, with an emphasis on poured concrete and purchased blocks (cinder-blocks, bricks, etc). The book is filled with color photos and each project includes a step-by-step construction details. There are many, many useful construction tips.
These are beginner projects, so the book isn't designed to inspire the inner-artist.
