I am working toward a Medical Coding certificate/degree, and this is the book we use in my Medical Terminology class. This book is well laid out, there are plenty of illustrations, it even comes with flash cards and an interactive computer cd to help you study. It makes it easy for a beginner to grasp the basic concepts of anatomy, diseases, procedures, and their commonly used abbreviations.
And this book is a bargain from Amazon. My school sells it for over $100.

I love the way it is laid out and I especially like the quizzes at the end of each chapter. Being new to the healthcare field, I have very little knowledge of medical terminology and procedures. This book is incredibly informative in a way that is understandable to even a beginner. It's well written, with clear, concise terminology and has plenty of color illustrations to help make sense of what would otherwise be overwhelming to a non-clinical person.

I am using this book right now in my Medical Terminology class and we are not using the whole book because I am not trying to be a Doctor or Nurse, but a Certified Medical Transcriptionist. Well, this book is impressive, to say the least. I am learning so much from the reading, the pictures, the 2 floppy disks and cassette tape that came with it. It is basically a textbook/workbook; there's a lot of review questions, etc. at the end of each chapter and also, on the floppies, there are sample tests and games to play to assist you in learning the material. Using the cassette tape has listening exercises on it so you can type along, as if the Doctor was dictating a letter and so you use it as dictation material and you can learn a lot of new medical terms that way, also. I don't think there could be a better book out there if you're wanting to learn Medical Terminology. I recommend it highly!

As a resident, I frequently prepared journal clubs, where we have to carefully discuss and scrutinize studies. I gained some introduction from "Appleton and Lange's Review of Epidemiology and Biostatistics for the USMLE". But preparing for journal clubs was quite different. There are many of statistical and epidemiological terminology in each article, some I am familiar with, but others are confusing and new. In this very helpful "dictionary" I was able to find more than 95% of the terms with brief definition and good short explanation that successfully allowed me to soundly evaluate the studies and prepare an impressive brief, neat handouts. The great thing about this dictionary was its well organization and ease to find what you are looking for. My friends frequently borrowed when they have to prepare their journal clubs, and found it really helpful.
It is a dictionary; i.e., arranged alphabetically sequencing the terms, and if a term has more than one name, they mention them all, before the explanation.
I highly recommended to every resident, as it will not only will help during residency, but also surely during real life and practice, especially a with hundreds of "trials, studies" appears in medical journal daily.
I gave it four not five stars, because few explanation were rather short, despite informative, and lack of illustration and pictures, which may require you to use a regular textbook in Epidemiology, this happened maybe almost 1 from every 10 terms.
"The" dictionary of epidemiology.......2000-06-13
One of the major problems with studying the field of epidemiology is the inconsistency of terminology that is used. This is because the field is relatively young, is actively evolving and has developed from multiple other disciplines including the social sciences as well as the medical sciences and statistics. As a result, it can be both confusing and frustrating for the student. This dictionary is the "bible" of terminology for the fireld, in part because there is no other. This should be an absolute requirement for the shelf of every student in the field of epidemiology. Even experienced epidemiologists are encouraged to have a copy for reference purposes. The only caution is that a new edition is due out soon. It can only be better than the first edition. Get it.

Stedman's is a great reference book with lots of up-to-date information. It's a necessity for anyone involved in any of the branches of biomedicine or the allied health professions.
The only disappointment is the accompanying CD. It is really worthless. It contains artwork and images that are mostly low resolution and add little of value to the written text. If the publishers want to give readers a useful CD or set of CDs, then provide a precis' with as much detail as possible from the entire printed volume in PDF format that can be loaded onto a PC or add some informative animations. But forget about the fuzzy still images.

This is an excellent book. The book is a good source for medical terms and their meanings. There are also nice color illustrations as well. The book also contained a CD-ROM which included a spellchecker and additional images. I highly recommend this book if you are planning to take any medical courses.

I am not in the health-care field, but am a big health-care consumer, and read a lot of technical books on various diseases. This dictionary has been invaluable in looking up terms I've encountered in other books, and just for general information. I usually end up with four or five fingers stuck in the book as I read one entry and need or want to look up something from the entry, or just see an interesting page.
A lot of very useful charts, such as abbreviations, blood test descriptions, and more.

I am in the health insurance industry, going to school to become a medical coder. This dictionary has been very helpful to me. I believe that this dictionary is geared more toward people that already have a knowledge of medical terminology, as when you look up a word, the definition sometimes is so complex that if you are not familiar with terms, you'll find yourself looking up another word just to define the original definition! This is not a bad thing, as it keeps you learning and learning is power; however if you do not like this type of thing, you may want to look around for another type of medical dictionary. Personally, I love this dictionary.
THE QUINTESSENTIAL MEDICAL DICTIONARY..........2006-05-01
This is a comprehensive, medical dictionary that is well organized and cross-referenced. Its use is made more interesting by the inclusion of etymologies. It is not, however, for doctors only. This veritable treasure trove of information is also a boon to lawyers. All who use it, however, should read the user's guide that is included with the book, in order to maximize its value.

I have bought several of these books over the years. I think it is the best drug book on the market. It shows which drugs are brand names and generic names, which is necessary for transcription of medical reports.
Saunders Pharmaceutical Word Book 2007.......2007-03-08
This is my second purchase of the Saunders word book over a course of 6 years, and I like it the best for medical transcription work. The drugs are easy to find.

This is a good book. I love that there are activities at the end of each chapter to help you learn the material. The discs also come in handy for pronounciation. I bought this book for a medical terminology class. It was less expensive than buying it at the university's bookstore.

The book is great! Comes with review CD'S that you can use to improve your test scores. Very nice.

The book is in okay condition, however the cover was a little torn. It included both CD's which I use to suppliment the course.
There are better books out there............2004-03-15
This book is a good introduction to medical terminology. It is not as comprehensive as some that are on the market, though. My edition did not come with a CD, but shows it as an optional tool. This book lacks a glossary and pronunciation of the medical terms. It does explain body processes in a way that makes it easy for the novice to understand, and that makes the book worth owning.

I received the book with CD as a gift because I will be entering the field of medicine. The book and CD are easy to follow and I have learned more than I ever expected in medical terminology.
The book is easy to follow and prepares you to read medical reports and to learn thousands of medical terms, including diagnostic, symptomatic, and surgical terms. The pronunciations help me pronounce words correctly when I talk to the medical staff at the hospital.
I recommend this book highly.

I ordered Tabers Cyclopedic guide first, but it arrived with some pages damaged in binding. And it seemed compressed in size and with its explanations. So I sent it back (thank you damage) and switched to Mosby's. Hooray! Bigger & better & more thorough with LOTS of pictures. The words searched for are printed in blue, with the definitions in black, making it easy to scan for your subject. Lucky me.

I found Mosby Medical Dictionary to be very informative and descriptive, especially for a visual experience. I would highly recommend it to students and teachers. Normally, I would purchase Tabers as it was updated but I must say I'm impressed with Mosby's medical dictionary. It is very graphic, lot's of pictures, the only downside is that some pictures may be disturbing to some people.
