True, the gentlemen of the Swedish Academy have made more than their share of bloopers. But when they bestowed the Nobel Prize upon Wislawa Szymborska in 1996, they got it right, rescuing a major poet from minor obscurity. Two previous collections of her work had appeared in English, of course. Yet View with a Grain of Sand is by far the best introduction to the Polish writer, conveying not only the fantastic lightness of her touch but the entire worlds she manages to pack into, as it were, a grain of sand. Miniscule wonders are her specialty, such as the tableau she records in "Miracle Fair": "The usual miracle: / invisible dogs barking / in the dead of night. / One of many miracles: / a small and airy cloud / is able to upstage the massive moon." Yet Szymborska is also a love poet of peculiar tartness:
True love. Is it really necessary?
Tact and common sense tell us to pass over it in silence,
like a scandal in Life's highest circles.
Perfectly good children are born without its help.
It couldn't populate the planet in a million years,
it comes along so rarely.
What comes along so rarely, in fact, is a writer of this quality--and a translation that does her justice. Szymborska's brilliance would probably overpower even a second-rate rendering into English. But thanks to the efforts of Stanislaw Baranczak and Clare Cavanagh, she is not only brilliant but supremely readable--an intellectual comedian for whom "there's nothing more debauched than thinking."

Poetry by a Great Lady.......2007-04-10
Wisala Szymborska's poetry passes the test of intelligibility which is important to me. Virtually all of her poems are self contained in that they do not make arcane literary allusions. In other words, her poetry can be appreciated by the average reader which I consider myself to be. She does not limit herself in subject matter so her poetry contains something for everyone, and also with a subtle humor and an obvious understanding of the human condition. She does not require a lot of words or a lengthy poem to share her own unique insights. Reading this Nobel laureate one thinks how nice it wold be to meet this great lady. Although I devoured this collection the day I received this book, it is one which I will certainly read again.
Lost in Translation!.......2006-12-15
The Nobel Laureate in Literature of 1996 was proudly bestowed on Wislawa Szymborska, the first Polish woman to receive the prize. While they are other Polish recipients like poet Czeslaw Milosz, Wladyslaw Reymont, and Henry Sienkiewicz to have received the honor, Wislawa is the first woman. While she writes poetry mostly, she has written prose. My biggest problem with poetry is that when it's written in another language, I believe it gets lost in translation but rather the meaning is not lost among its readers. The translators have the arduous task of translating from Polish to English. If you anything about Polish, it's not an easy language to translate from especially to English. But Wislawa is worthy of receiving such top honors because she is now well-known, highly regarded and respected. She has not changed much since she was awarded the NObel prize. She still lives in the same three room apartment in Cracow, she still smokes, and she is still the same humble person who despite her own feelings is quite worthy of such a prize.

...Containing over eighty poems from seven original collections, this book serves as a well-rounded and pleasant introduction to Szymborska's work. This is a good choice for anyone interested in good poetry, women under communist regimes, or Polish literature.
Another praise, from a younger reader.......2001-12-01
This book was and still is my first poetry book; not because I haven't read anyone else's, but it's the first compilation that I was really willing to pay the often outrageous prices for. (LOL) I am not an avid poetry reader, nor am I familiar with the current favorite contemporary poets, but I find that she really does succinctly portray "life's improbability as well as its transient beauty" quite well.
As a younger reader , I do have a bit of a problem identifying with the poetry that she writes pre-1972 (that is, the first few sections before the 'Could Have' section), because I don't really know much about it. As a note though, I probably should say that 'Nothing Twice,' which is about the probabilities of chance, from the pre-1972 section has been a real gem. Anyhow, the travelogues, the places, the books are things that frankly, I'd ask my parents and they probably wouldn't know either, or know very little about. I suppose if I researched enough, I would have no trouble understanding her message, but the stuff I really bought this book for was the pro-1972 sections. I can identify the issues because they're fairly general knowledge and have a certain mocking humor to some of them, but the words do just pull you in. The poems are addressed to one, and to all, and you feel like you're part of the whole. There are instances in which you feel like she's writing about you and the instances you've gone through, and that's what makes you feel amazed at the depth of understanding she has on these matters.
I first discovered her poetry in my high school English class and was surprised to find this book as the only book available in my favorite bookstore (and costing almost triple the cost of a volume of poetry that must have been 600 pages long, with of course long-dead, long-cherished poets). Oh, wait--I did find another book containing her work (that I don't remember the name of) but I bought this one because there were simply more poems that I liked. After a month or two of muddling around and waiting for the price drop (which it didn't), I just gave up and bought it. I can't say that I've regretted that decision.
And...if you still have trouble deciding, the Nobel Prize for Literature she won should be more than enough of a pull to help you decide. It wasn't as much of a deciding factor for me, but it's always nice to know that somewhere in the depths of the blackhole that is my room, I actually have nobel prize literature that I understand and can recommend to others...
My favorite poems from her have been 'Could Have,' 'The Onion,' 'Discovery,' 'True love,' 'Under One Small Star,' 'Pi,' of course 'View with a grain of Sand' because of wordplay, but I find that every time I re-read it, I uncover more about the poems and so that favorites list keeps on getting longer and longer.
It may sound a little strange, but I keep it with me when I travel for long periods of time away from home and turn to it when I have that rare solitary moment to really think about life and what its inner workings are because it just gives such a realistic criticism that you sort of go...wow. Never really thought about it like that before.
Simply elegant & touching works.......2001-03-19
I am taking a Women in Literature class and one of our assignments was to choose a living female author and read one of her works. Because I am of Polish descent, I decided to read Ms. Szymborska's poems and I bought this collection. Her poems are very touching and direct. I appreciate the honesty that she uses and how some of her poems were derived from various world events (i.e. Vietnam, the Holocaust, etc.) and I could sense her obvious disdain for the Communism that had taken over Poland. My favorite poem from this collection is "Utopia". I could just read all of her poems over and over. It's a shame you don't hear much about her. I recommend that anyone read these poems and you will be deeply touched.

I bought this book because my vegetarian daughter's tastes have evolved beyond the usual fare offered by cookbooks for vegetarian kids or teens. Now she wants her dinner to be something worth salivating over during soccer practice. This book delivers on its promise: the recipes use readily available ingredients in innovative ways and combinations that result in memorable dishes with a ton of flavor.
Yes, we already have a dozen recipes for really nice lentil soup, so why buy this book? I mean--think hard, now--when was the last time you were truly surpised by a bowl of lentil soup? Mr Charney gives you recipes for lentil soups unusual enough to make you raise your eyebrows before you start licking the bowl. Yes, we already have a serviceable recipe for vegetarian shepherd's pie, but Mr Charney's shepherd pie puts those other pretenders to shame. Yes, we already have a teriyaki tofu recipe, but Mr Charney's teriyaki tofu is so good you'll want to raid the fridge for it at 3 AM. And so on and so on, right through the sandwiches, burgers, pastas, side dishes, salads...
The recipes do not require weird ingredients (I can get everything at my regular market or at Whole Foods), no fussy techniques, no equipment you can only get at the cooking specialty store. There are plenty of recipes that give you a great dish in 30 minutes or less, but there are also some recipes for those long, dark, bone-chilling January days when you want to spend an hour or so in a steamy and tantalizingly fragrant kitchen. The book is intuitively organized and has a good index.
When it's time to start the holiday gift shopping, I will be getting this book for all the vegetarians and parents of vegetarians on my list.
Great Vegetarian Fare!.......2005-11-19
I LOVE this cookbook. It is so much better than a lot of the bland fare in vegetarian cookbooks. Charney is innovative and not afraid to spice things up. He must be a well trained, skilled cook because his recipes are far from ordinary! Everything I've made in this book so far is great. Our family loves the teriyaki tofu, the spicy tofu sald, the black bean and avocado soup and the lentil soup wtih taragon. I've given this book as a gift more than once and have really enjoyed cooking vegetarian dishes where I don't miss the meat one bit. By the way, most of the recipes in this book are actually vegan!

This book has several charts, which I feel is a bonus.
I highly reccommend this book, if you are seeking a means to create meals with INTENT, and you are into philosophical eating.
The recipes contained, are a GREAT base to tailor to your body's particular cravings, or needs, but I would not reccommend this book for the recipes alone.
This book is more about the "how", and less about the "what" to creating your own grains.
The grammar of cooking, not just the vocabulary.......2005-08-23
I may be biased because I took Joanne's School of Natural Cookery course ten years ago to date and came to know and love this fascinating woman's approach to ingredients and their interrelationships; nonetheless, I still think this book remains a a powerful and compelling learning tool. Amazing Grains opens with the idea of learning cooking as an open process and flexible framework rather than an exercise in rote memorization. Saltzman does not reject the accepted knowledge of traditional cooking, but works through an analysis of why some cooking 'traditions' taste good and what about their ingredients allow them to combine to make delicious dishes. She returns to the basic elements of taste and instructs the reader through theory and example in how to reconstruct flavor combinations to come about one's own dishes. Even more than this, Saltzman's theories work when applied to traditional cookbooks and can be used to analyze, add to, and improve their recipes. Yes, the examples in the book seem somewhat odd at first, but when you realize that the principles used to come about these unusual recipes actually generate successful dishes, you'll become excited about the possibilities! There is a somewhat macrobiotic/American vegetarian slant to this book, hence the frequent use of seaweeds, miso, mirin (Japanese sweetened cooking rice wine), and umeboshi vinegar; however, the art of the book is all about cross-cultural, cross-palate substitutions and how to utilize them wisely. You can find lists of recipes in any other vegetarian cookbook - what this book gives you is the knowledge and power to be your own list-maker!
Not what I expected.......2003-11-23
Very few of the recipes inspire me to want to make them. The only ones I am even tempted to try are the couple of oat recipes. There are a lot more rice recipes than any of the other grains. The book is very uninspiring. There are no photos either which might have helped. I must add that I am not a vegetarian but was looking for ways to prepare grains and get more of them in my daily cooking. But OAT GROAT SOUP WITH MUSTARD AND THYME, just doesn't sound very appealing to me, for example.
She lists buckwheat, millet, oats, quinoa, rice, amaranth, job's tears, teff as the grain categories. No wheat or corn.

I found this book a little hard to use. I don't really like the format which is like a textbook for a cooking class but what really frustrated me is that the index isn't right. I looked up several things and was brought to a page that had something totally different.
The information on cooking methods and results was interesting but I wasn't that impressed with the recipes. A lot of them were very strange and said to be results of cooking class improvisation experiments. I would have preferred more basic and traditional recipes with just a few of the odd ones thrown in.
Amazing Grains! Amazing Recipes! Amazing Directions!.......2000-03-04
I never knew there were so many different types of grains, or different ways to prepare them. This book is facinating reading. Not only does Joanne explain the characteristics of different grains, but also the different types of cooking liquids, salt seasonings, oils, vegetables, herbs and spices that make up a dish, and (very helpful) how substituting other ingredients can vary the dish. My favorite recipe is "Oats, Onions, and Thyme". It uses steel-cut oats, and is a delightful change of pace from rice.
I also recommend her other book "Romancing The Bean"

Uses a lot of egg protein powder.......2007-07-28
I felt the recipes were OK, but I disliked the reliance on the Jay Robb Egg Protein powder. Way too many of the recipes call for this and it is difficult to find and very expensive. The author does not give any substitutes for this. Also, for $19.99, the book is rather primitive. No pictures, for example. There were also many recipes that called for packets of stevia and did not give the equivalent in teaspoons. Some real room for improvement, but a good effort. More for low-carb than gluten-free, I felt.
I have Celiac.......2007-01-14
This cookbook is the best. I was diagnosed with Celiac two years ago and learning how to cook and eat in a new way has been a challenge. This is a great tool for everyday living with Celiac, not too complex, VERY practical.

Elizabeth's cookbook is unlike any other carb-free cookbook you'll find. I simply cannot believe the taste of these recipes. They are DELICIOUS and so good for you! She provides a great list of resources as well, specific brands that she recommends for each type of food. It is very helpful. The recipes are well written and easy to read, they are also kept short and sweet. My husband declared the lasagna the best he's ever had in his life! I HIGHLY recommend this book!!!!

I am absolutely addicted to these creative and scrumptious recipes! Even though it is a relatively small collection, all my favorite comfort foods are deliciously represented. I also freeze individual portions of the lasagna and give them away as gifts. People love it and can't believe it is healthy! YUM!

what nonsense is theology!.......2005-10-11
The entire enterprise of theology -- attempting to explain a God whom even religion notes is beyond understanding -- is by definition ridiculous and nonsense! What to say here? Simply this. The argument of Barth and Hauerwas against natural theology is simply a way of making irrational religion impervious to rational critique. If you start by saying that Christianity is not based on nature, then what is it based on? Barth/Hauerwas would say revelation. But revelation is simply the delusion of old Jews and Greeks, who had no more notion of what God was or might be than the man in the moon. Thus revelation is baloney and so is Hauerwas and even Barth, for all Barth's intellectual distinction. It is time to call a spade a spade: theology is nonsense.
Will it be James, Niebuhr, or Barth?.......2002-03-08
The publication of Stanley Hauerwas' Gifford lectures (2000-2001) is an account of what went wrong with theology in the nineteenth century and how to set it back on the right course. The author exemplifies the former with an examination of William James and Reinhold Neibuhr and presents them as "disguised forms of humanism." The right course for our particular circumstance is a recovery of Karl Barth's christological natural theology.
I have little quarrel with Hauerwas' picture of James but I am troubled by his treatment of Niebuhr. The difficulty begins with the author's opening statement about Niebuhr: "Sin! Not just sin, but original sin, is taken to be what distinguishes Niebuhr from Protestant liberalism." In a way that is unthinkable for James, Niebuhr has a theology and it is driven by the reality of sin. In spite of some broad similarities between James and Niebuhr, their pragmatism for example, Niebuhr lived an authentic form of Christian witness. One does not even have to go beyond what the author writes about Niebuhr to see that Niebuhr's theology is thoroughly "against the grain" in a way that James' spiritualism is fashionable.
It is peculiar, to say the least, that Barth is presented as an example of natural theology because of his adamant "no" to any form of natural theology. In order to make his argument, Hauerwas has to redefine what is meant by natural theology. It has nothing to do with the natural world and everything to do with Barth's "ability to tell us the way the world is." Immediately, some will be dissatisfied with the Barthian divorce between natural science and theology. It is unfortunate that Hauerwas flows with the grain and turns Christian faith further inward without regard to a Christian witness over against the dominant and reductive scientific description of the way the universe is.
The vitality and relevance of "With the Grain of the Universe" is the question about whether it should be James, Niebuhr, or Barth who inform our theology. I do not like the forced choice between Niebuhr's inclusive form of witnessing (social justice, building coalitions, changing laws, siding with the poor) and Barth's witness to the crucified and risen Lord. If Christian theology is going to embrace natural theology, then let it be as Hauerwas says, a confident and unapologetic proclamation of the way things, but as a witness broad enough to include the created order as well as the human soul. As usual, Stanley Hauerwas has provided a theological framework for a lively and meaningful conversation.

If you want to learn more about Grains and experiment with them this Cook Book is a must have! All the recipes I've made so far are very good! Hubby & small kids eat the food too! Best thing is that the food is healthier for them! Grains are for the most part inexpensive and highly versatile and nutritious!

In response to Kila Day's comment in a previous review that the title of Allergy Cooking with Ease was misleading, the book now has a new, shorter, and more accurate subtitle. ALL of the recipes in the book are free of wheat, cow's milk, eggs, corn, and soy. Of the 358 recipes and recipe variations in the book, 332 are also free of yeast, 348 are also free of sugar (most of the desserts are fruit-sweetened), 261 are also free of all grains, and 267 are also free of gluten. Although a few of the recipes call for alternative milk or cheese, often as an optional ingredient, 333 of the recipes do not. Obviously, most of the recipes are free of all of the allergens listed in the original subtitle.
I am sorry to have disappointed Kila and the reviewer who said that too many allergens were avoided in the book and hope that the new subtitle will make things more clear. Although I obviously can't please all people at all times, the original and revised versions of Allergy Cooking with Ease have many fans and satisfied owners (~40,000). Until the recent publication of my book The Ultimate Food Allergy Cookbook and Survival Guide, Allergy Cooking with Ease was my best seller.
I DO understand where Kila is "coming from" and sympathize. After thinking "I can't eat this" about most foods, if someone sees a few recipes they can't eat in a book, they immediately jump to the conclusion that they can't eat anything. With her "eleven kids too many," it's easy to understand why Kila may be doing things very quickly and without having looked at the book thoroughly.
Also, to avoid further confusion, the subtitle of the book can be changed in the "official" listings immediately, although it may take a few days for the changes to show up. However, there are quite a few books printed with the original cover design at this point. A revised cover is forthcoming but is not possible immediately. I apologize for the confusion to Kila and any other readers.
Helpful Recipes.......2007-03-03
I enjoyed this book, because I thought it was very insightful and helpful in dealing with food allergies. It is especially helpful for the person who is highly allergic and needs more exotic ingredients.
Disappointed in ingredients.......2007-02-13
I was very disappointed when I found out that this book has various recipes without certain of these ingredient. I was excited about this book because I have all the alergens mentioned. Then when I got the book the recipes only took out some of these ingredients so you could pick the recipes that left out the alergens that you have.
The title was very misleading! Because I have all of these alergies I was hoping that all of the recipes were free of these ingredients. I have not found one recipe yet that is free of all the mentioned alergens. I am thinking of sending it back.
Life Saver if You Have A Lot of Allergies.......2007-01-26
This book is a lifesaver if you need to avoid a wide variety of foods due to your allergies. I agree with many of the reviewers that some of the ingredients are exotic, but sometimes that is the choice you need to make if common foods cause allergic reactions. For example, corn alone is estimated to be in about 80% of the processed foods in the US. If you need to avoid corn, and other common ingredients, you need to get creative.

A Grateful Grandmother.......2005-01-09
When my daughter discovered her seven-year old daughter was allergic to wheat, soy, dairy, corn, Baker's Yeast, eggs, and chocolate, I was stymied. My daughter works outside the home and does not have time to do recipe-type cooking. As Grandma, I have had to fill in. Along with Internet sources, this book has been a tremendous help to me. Glad, too, to have discovered Vitamin C Crystals and various kinds of flour, which I didn't know existed.
