3 out of 5 stars Not as good as I'm with the Band........2006-09-12

still a good read, but not the same magic as the 1st book.

4 out of 5 stars She's cute honest and insightful - this is an eye opener.......2006-04-11

C'mon- she's not a PHD candidate at some university- this is not critical literature- it's just her rock and roll story. I found it very telling that she lived for so many years as a codependant housewife in a dysfunctional high profile relationship. A very intriging follow up to her first book. I like her and I liked the book, (as well as I'm with the Band.)The two books are an eye opener to just how macho and swaggering the rockers of old really are. Why begrudge Pamela?

1 out of 5 stars pass on this one.......2003-07-15

Don't waste your time or money. This poor woman. Failed marriage when her husband Michael DesBarres finally sobered up he is humiliated when she writes about her slutty past in book one. She's like a birthday cake where everyone got a piece, and Michael Des Barres got one that everyone had their hands all over. It all began with her drunkard father who was never home then she began trying to get attention of high powered rock stars who used her up like toilet paper. You'll cry for her son who was plagued with emotional problems. Then you will cry from boredom and her awful writing.

3 out of 5 stars I liked the book!.......2002-04-12

Sure, it wasn't as wild as her first book, "I'm With The Band: Confessions of a Groupie", but she's starting to grow up! I guess it has to happen! I still enjoyed the book. There's a lot of growth here as a person. She's determined not to be a doormat and starts confronting issues head-on. Like her not so perfect marriage, her father's death, and past relationships. I love her description of Jimmy Page, how she started to see him in an entirely different way. IMO, he was a hypocrite to call her a "bimbo" and trash her book. Pamela is an excellent writer, even if the subject matter isn't quite as tittilating as her first book.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Bother with This One!.......2002-04-12

I'm sure lots of people have bought this book, hoping for more name-dropping, drug-taking fun, and like me have been very disappointed. Des Barres is no writer, and this story of her more settled-down wifely days is duller than dirt. If you enjoy reading an ex-druggie's regrets and lamentations about her husband's continued use (until he too goosesteps the AA way),her abject failure as an actress, and her son's (surprise, surprise!) messed up adolescence, go ahead and waste your money. The only amusing episode in the whole book (or at least the parts I didn't skip over through boredom) concerned Des Barres' infatuation with Sandra Bernhard, but that occupied but a few pages as Bernhard had the sense to avoid entanglement with the self-styled "queen of the groupies." Des Barres doesn't seem to understand that what made _I'm With the Band_ entertaining was that the things she was doing were fun and outrageous. Must be hard knowing all the good parts of your life are over. I hear there's a third book -- think I'll pass.

Book Description

Nobody lived a healthier or more active life. She was the juicing guru to the stars. She exercised and ate right. But at forty-seven Pamela Serure, exhausted, in pain, and with diagnoses ranging from menopause to anxiety, discovered that she had heart disease. Lifestyle and diet couldn’t correct what her genes had determined. With two days to get her affairs in order, Pamela prepared for triple bypass surgery to correct three almost completely clogged arteries.

What the doctors missed and what most women don’t seem to know is that heart disease is the number-one killer of American women. It kills more women than all the cancers combined. Traditional markers of heart disease, such as high cholesterol, may not apply to women. As a result, doctors consistently misdiagnose female patients with anxiety, digestive distress, or symptoms of menopause.

Blindsided by her sudden bypass surgery, Pamela Serure turned her life-altering experience into a personal mission to help educate other women about this dangerous and far-reaching disease. In this book Pamela opens the door to her recovery process and tells readers what the doctors won’t. She has found experts to offer advice so that readers will know exactly what to look for and what tests to demand. Women share stories of how they persisted in having the cardiac tests run that saved their lives and others share stories of women they lost because of a missed diagnosis. Comforting, funny, and soulful, this is the book that will empower women to take charge of their heart health. As Pamela says, “These days heart disease has all my attention, as it should have yours.”

Book Description

Chronic heart disease—heart attacks and strokes—causes more than 40 percent of all deaths in the United States. That’s 950,000 people each year or one person every 33 seconds. Statistically more vulnerable with age, hundreds of men and women begin the struggle to manage or prevent its occurrence every day. So naturally it’s on the mind of older Americans and the family members who cherish them. What exactly is heart disease—and what forms does it take? Who gets it, and how is it diagnosed? What steps can you take to prevent the problem from worsening? Which are the best therapies? How can you best reduce stress, lower weight, control blood pressure? AARP has the answers.
The superbly organized and authoritative text includes chapters covering key issues, which range from definition to diagnosis and from treatment to lifestyle changes that address issues specifically identified with heart disease. These include: nutrition, high cholesterol, prevention, smoking, and sex and intimacy. The book casts an eye on the future, too, with information on medicines and treatments currently under development or on the horizon. The appendix offers useful point-by-point checklists for managing your treatment, information on handling medical emergencies, and resources.
This guide provides expert medical information and valuable advice that no older adult will want to do without!

Book Description

This book reveals the three most important capabilities leaders must demonstrate today: the ability to set strategy, empathize with others, and take risks—all at the same time. In Head, Heart, and Guts, leadership experts David Dotlich, Peter Cairo, and Stephen Rhinesmith—who teach and coach CEOs and executive teams throughout the world—argue that to be successful in a complex, matrixed, fast-moving world, “whole” leaders must set strategy, develop trusting relationships with others, and consistently do the right thing based on personal values. “Partial” leaders, often the product of traditional executive programs, may be successful in the shortrun, but their companies lose over time. Filled with case studies of companies such as Bank of America, Johnson & Johnson, Novartis, and UBS, Head, Heart, and Guts, lays out specific steps and actions for leaders who want to grow beyond their “leadership comfort zone” and an action plan for companies that want to move beyond tried-and-true leadership development in order to develop “whole” leaders throughout their leadership pipeline.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Compelling case for leaders with a soft side.......2007-08-08

In this presentation of the potentially exciting topic of executive leadership, authors David L. Dotlich, Peter C. Cairo and Stephen H. Rhinesmith stress the nuances of theory, perhaps at the expense of showing additional, powerful human examples. Maybe that comes from the authors' perspectives as consultants who often must disassemble a topic to present it in their own way. While the book has a compelling basic theme - developing leaders who become effective by learning to be compassionate and brave, as well as savvy - that insight gets a bit mired in the presentation. The book offers worthwhile guidance, and supplies almost too many clipboard processes and checklists of symptoms, problems and techniques. We find the book's concept contemporary and intriguing. While its procedural guidance may be helpful, its wisdom resides in its discussions of mature leadership.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic Leadership.......2007-02-02

"Everyone has a natural leadership style, and a tendency to lean on intellect, emotion, or courage doesn't change with maturity. What does change is a willingness to consider options that don't fit with one's natural style. What also changes is a capacity for trying new ways of leading others and thus expanding the personal leadership capabilities." ~ pg. 207

David L. Dotlich, Peter C. Cairo and Stephen H. Rhinesmith present the idea of "complete leaders" who posses strong analytical abilities, have a high level of emotional intelligence and are willing to take the needed risks to see their businesses grow and expand.

All three authors teach and coach CEOs and executive teams. Through their work they help leaders grow beyond their comfort zones to become authentic leaders of the twenty-first century. This book will encourage leaders to set high standards, inspire trust, motivate people and create meaningful relationships. From the beginning of the book they address pertinent issues and problems that seem to have logical solutions if only leaders relied more on all three: head, heart and guts.

"...our leaders often rely exclusively on a single quality - head or heart or guts. Unfortunately, when you do that you ignore other aspects of what is required to be successful." ~ pg. 2

Head, Heart & Guts presents how the world used to be and explains why business leaders must embrace a new idea of what it means to be a leader due to the changing needs of society and employee expectation. Some of the highlights of this book include:

Finding a Fresh Perspective
Reframing the Boundaries
The Five-Step Process to Develop a Point of View
Guide People Through Vision and Values
Developing Compassion
Overcoming Personal Derailers
Balancing Risk and Reward
Mature Leadership

~The Rebecca Review

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-01-03

Great book for those who REALLY want to develop all skills needed to become a leader and have the guts to follow them.

5 out of 5 stars A Willingness to Put One's Beliefs on the Line!.......2007-01-02

Dotlich et al's "Head, Heart and Guts" and Ram Charan's "Know-How" serve as perfect bookends to all that has been written over the years on leadership philosophy and practice.

In "Know-How," Charan constructs a more complete leadership theory integrating "know-how" with personality traits, psychological orientation and cognitive architecture. In "Head, Heart and Guts," Dotlich et al recommend a second new perspective on leadership and a fresh approach to leadership development with a focus on the integration of the head, the heart and guts. "Guts" as an umbrella term for a willingness to do the right thing, no matter how difficult that is - a willingness to put one's beliefs on the line!

The authors point out that we have been focused on "partial leadership" with an emphasis on cognitive skills and/or, until recently, on emotional skills. But leaders today are encountering decision points for which there are no "right" solutions and these skills alone will not assure successful leadership. They confront paradoxes and need to manage them rather than resolve them. They will need to act counter-intuitively at times and to trust instincts (know-how) in other instances. The need today is for "whole leadership."

Whole leaders balance people and business needs and risk/reward, motivate people from diverse backgrounds, and create real trust through unyielding integrity and transparency. Whole leaders, based as much on instinct and relationships as their analytical skills, are comfortable operating in an ambiguous environment and are able to make risks pay off.

Dotlich et al identify three reasons for singular leadership failure:

1. A disconnect between what you know you should do and what you actually do.
2. Misdiagnosis - a poor understanding of the type of leadership that is required in a given situation. Working globally requires a great of understanding of various cultures.
3. Creation of false expectations. Feel leader is manipulative.

Their recommendation for today's complex and uncertain world is a new leadership development approach which includes:

1. Hire based on criteria related to head, heart, and guts.
2. Encourage people not to be prisoners of their own experience.
3. Involve them in action learning experiences that force them to take on new and challenging assignments.
4. Place people in jobs before they are ready to handle them.
5. Provide them with coaching and other tools that facilitate learning from experience.
6. Develop leaders with the head, heart, and guts traits in mind.

Readers will find the discussion on "guts" of particular interest. The authors point out leaders or those aspiring to leadership roles must have a point of view, understand their values, and have the courage of their convictions. These strong people will hang onto their values and they, in turn, will be the ones who strengthen us and our organizations. Unfortunately, today, while the workplace is an opportunity to model good values, the workplace suffers due to the lack of modeling. Dotlich et al point out that our MBA schools, management development programs and consultants have all contributed to this problem. "Head, Hearts and Guts" provides a systematic way to rectify this.

This is an excellent read and is filled with case studies from companies such as Bank of America, J&J, Novartis, and UBS. The authors are senior executives who now serve as principals with Mercer Delta Executive Learning Center. David Dotlich, PhD, is President of Mercer Delta Executive Learning Center and former EVP of Honeywell, Inc. Peter Cairo, PhD, is the former Chairman of the Department of Counseling and Organizational Psychology at Columbia University. And Stephen Rhinesmith is a former ambassador to Russia and former president of Holland America Line. All teach and coach CEOs and successful management teams around the world.

4 out of 5 stars Developing a whole leadership style.......2006-08-11

The authors show how traditional analytical leadership won't make you a successful leader in today's business environment. They demonstrate the difference between a "head" versus a "heart" leader, and make a case for the need to balance "kindness" with "analysis' while still retaining "guts", and rethinking the way decisions are made and people are led. They provide clear-cut methods for identifying your default leadership style, then reframing and adjusting it, to provide a more successful balance between intellect, compassion, empathy, toughness, courage, and risk-taking, supported with the financial return to the business. I found it a logical, well supported read, which is funny when you think about the case for infusing compassion and guts into your leadership style. Still, I understood what the authors meant and buy into the need for this leadership style. A good read for leaders looking to expand their own leadership style - or others who want to make a case to leaders who should change their leadership style. Leaders who are already well-rounded would find this a review.

    5 out of 5 stars Take Heart.......2007-10-08

For every alcoholic family, or anyone wanting to know what it is like to grow up in one, Peacock clearly defines the shame, guilt, terror, uncertainty, manipulation, oppression, emptiness, denial, hurt and fear she has experienced. Take Heart chronicles her years from childhood into early adulthood. Peacock endures abuse, death, ridicule, abortion, and abandonment - but she asks no pity, makes no excuses; and yet the reader longs to reach into the pages, reach back into time and whisk that little girl away from all the ugly sorrow that surrounds her. Pick her up, hug her; give her hope, love her. Save her? She must continue on her journey to becoming real, just as the Velveteen Rabbit did - all shabby, and the pink rubbed off his nose. Someone will love you, and you will become real. Your cavernous heart will be filled, and not with the hard minerals of rock, but with the soft flesh of a ripe tomato. Fragile! It must be handled with care, for to bruise it too much will cause it to rot.

    Book Description

One night in February Hans came home from work to find Rainer standing outside his apartment door. This was the last thing Hans wanted. He could only get himself in bigger trouble, talking to Rainer again.

"Rainer, you shouldn't come here. I've been followed lately. Someone probably knows you're here - or will see you leave."

"I had nowhere else to go, Hans. I'm hiding out. The Stasi is looking for me."

Hans felt his hope drain away. He was caught, either way. If Rainer was telling the truth, Hans should have nothing to do with him. If he was lying, and was actually here it seduce him into a mistake - to please some Stasi agent - that was even worse.

Just as Hans's life is improving, he begins to suspect that German authorities are watching him again. Going back to prison would be painful, but worse is the thought that he might miss his opportunity for a future with Elli.

Gene is surviving the terrors of a jungle war day by day, with long periods of boredom followed by moments of utter terror. Can he really make it home, when so many are dying all around him? And if so, will Emily and Danny even recognize the man he has become?

Kathy has joined the Peace Corps and traveled to the Philippines, determined to make a difference, but she find that her eagerness to help only alienates people. When the local LDS branch president asks her to accept a calling, Kathy is unsure. She can't seem to find a place where she really belongs.

Diane's marriage to Greg is certainly not turning out the way she had imagined it. She still has reason to doubt his faithfulness to her, and he's becoming abusive. Diane wants to make her marriage work, but she's wondering how many chances she should give her difficult husband.

Take Me Home continues the gripping story of life in the sixties for the Thomas grandchildren - a time of turmoil and trial, of growth and self-discovery. If you're interested in the lessons of history, of if you're simply looking of a powerful LDS novel, you won't want to miss this fourth volume of the Hearts of the Children series.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, makes you want to read the next one........2005-10-01

I enjoyed this novel, it is a good series although I enjoyed the World War II series better. I didn't like how he jumped around characters unevenly, with more time to my less favorite ones. All in all, it was a good page turner and worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars Take me home.......2004-10-18

This book kept me on the edge of my seat and sucked me into the world of the Thomas'. I literally felt like I was lurking through the Vietnam forests and feeling the frustrations of the peace corps who helped out in the Phillipeans. It helped me understand how to look through the eyes of others and understand them. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes an unpredictable book and likes anticipation. It was a joy to read!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Historical Fiction.......2004-10-09

I really enjoyed this book. I literally couldn't put this book down!

This book focuses on the Thomas family during the 1960's and 1970's. I thought that it was a great historical-fiction novel, because I learned a lot about the time period. (If you haven't read the previous books in the series, then the book won't make much sense.)

This book has a very interesting plot. There are many things going on at the same time, through different characters. There is a character that is actually in the war, one in Germany, one in the Peace Corps, and one in Utah. I love how the book presented the time period through many different angles and points of view.

4 out of 5 stars 'Take Me Home' a page turner........2004-10-06

this exciting historical book recapes the history of the vietnam war through an LDS family. It takes you to the forests of Vietnam as you sit on the edge of the seat anticipating the next page. It takes you into the lives of an abusive relationship and how she survives. You also see through the eyes of the Peace Corps in the philippeans and there frustrations and happiness. I would recomend this book to everyone who is curious about the Vietnam war and loves adventure.

3 out of 5 stars Family Story with a Touch of Romance.......2005-08-02

Marguerite Cole is a powerful businesswoman who has had her heart broken too many times. She never mixes business with pleasure although Dexter Williams, a computer-networking guru, has tried to connect with her for six months. Once Dexter's contract ended it gave Marguerite the opportunity to submit to her interest in the chocolate prince. A night on the town captures her heart, but her good sense will not let her go too far.

The storybook romance continues, Marguerite's issues with past relationships keep rearing their heads, which forces cause her to withdraw from Dexter's advances. After her grandmother suffers a stroke, Dexter swoops in to save Marguerite from the depths of depression and constantly showers her with loving attention while getting to know her family. Just as their relationship is looking bright, Dexter's only living relative drops a life-changing bombshell. Marguerite coaches Dexter through it not knowing that their paths and families will cross again.

TAKE ME TO HEART is truly a family-oriented tale. The social issues discussed by the characters are heavy for your typical romance. Homosexuality, health and care of the elderly, division of property after death, and making sure suitors are typical issues for families today. If you loved the movie SOUL FOOD then TAKE ME TO HEART is right up your alley.

5 out of 5 stars Good Things Come to Those Who Wait.......2004-07-03

After six months of his persistence and her rule of not mixing business with pleasure, Marguerite Cole reluctantly agrees to have dinner with the alluring Dexter Williams. The date concludes, leaving both Marguerite and Dexter with sensational memories that will last a lifetime.

Dexter, the ultimate playboy, finds himself falling in love and this time he is playing for keeps. Although Marguerite enjoys the time spent with Dexter, because of issues she harbors from a past relationship, she has a hard time expressing her feelings and is not seeking a commitment.

Ms. Mello also introduces us to a character readers will love, Marguerite's grandmother, Miss Mae. Readers will also find similarities in members of their own families, when they come to know the other relatives who are always meddling in Marguerite's business, as it pertains to matters of the heart.

Deborah Fletcher Mello's TAKE ME TO HEART is a superbly well-written novel. Readers will laugh at the language spoken by the elderly characters and cry when social issues arise.

4 out of 5 stars Take Me to Heart.......2004-05-26

Deborah Fletcher Mello definitely makes you remember your connection with family and friends. The character of Margherite is one that you will not forget anytime soon. She makes you stop and think about the excess baggage we sometimes "unknowingly" carry into our new relationships. Take Me to Heart will make you remember the good and the bad, it will make you laugh and cry and you will call someone you know and say...you have got to read this book. If you loved the movie Soul Food or if you enjoy reading books by E. Lynn Harris...you will absolutely love this book. I can't wait for her next book.

5 out of 5 stars This was passed to me from my mom. I am surprised!.......2004-04-22

I was surprised when I strarted to read this book because usually the books that my mom choose do not draw my attention, but this one it not the same. I liked the book from the beginning I loved it so much that the more I read the sadder I got because of the fact that I was getting closer to the end which I did not want to reach. I would recommend this book to anyone and I want to tell the author that she did a swell job in writing this book I look forward to reading some of her other books especially if they are as good as this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great work of fiction!.......2004-02-04

I say fiction because this book is much more than a romance. I made me laugh, cry, and think about mine own family. Yep, there was a lot of my family in this book! Very easy to read! The characters were easy to follow. Great read! Looking forward to the next one.
