- Examine the potential hazards of taking antidepressant medications
- Manage your condition with exercise and lifestyle changes
- Help family and friends with this condition understand their diagnosis and find treatment
Customer Reviews:
Finally a book for me and my family!.......2007-08-24
I read this book at the suggestion of my doctor, who is a genius with bipolar 2. It addressed many of my concerns, misconceptions, and questions in a very reader-friendly way. It's a relatively easy read, considering the subject matter. Dr. Phelps has written in a comprehensive way about this often misunderstood subject, and he managed to make me laugh along the way. After my husband read it, he said he had a much better understanding of the way bipolar 2 works. Don't let the word "bipolar" scare you! I was misdiagnosed for most of my life because I never had "highs." Please read this book if you are not sure you have been diagnosed correctly or if your treatment is not working for you. I hope you will find it as helpful as I have.
Worth it.......2007-07-21
This was the first book my psych recommended when we first began toying around with the idea of Bipolar II vs. Major Depressive Disorder. It is an amazing book, especially for those people who just can't seem to shake their depression. Not every person who has treatment-resistant depression is bipolar, but this book helps delve into the topic. I have over 20 books about Bipolar II, and this is in my top 5.
Important read if you've been unsuccessfully treated for depression..........2007-07-20
My doctor suggested this book as good reading to familiarize myself with the various treatments for depression. Perhaps his recommendation was off, but clearly, this book IS about bipolar disorders. While I didn't gain much for myself, it did open my eyes about someone close to me and why various treatments have failed to improve that situation.
Phelps is very good with helping the layreader understand neuro/psyche disorders that are classified as depression and/or bipolar disorder. He gets a little 'out there' as far as splitting hairs; I concluded that most of the population, according to Phelps, must have some degree of mood disorder. But, I DO strongly recommend this book for anyone who has been diagnosed with depression but failed to respond to the many good medications developed to treat common depression. Phelps also offers a very good explanation as to why some anti-depressants have caused suicidal thoughts/actions in some. Very likely, they have bipoar disorder and the type of chemical support provided by this class of drug was just wrong.
If you've struggled with "depression" and its related treatments, trust your doctor and can take the time to read this book, you might find you don't really have depression, after all. Bipolar disorder and it's cousins are more common in society than we know. There are excellent drug and cognitive therapies available to help people who haven't been able to find the light at the end of their tunnel. Possible a different diagnosis will help them.
Nothing New In Spite of Title.......2007-06-12
If you're already diagnosed bipolar 2, you're better off getting The Bipolar Workbook or a better basic bipolar book than this. So much of it is directed at people who don't even know if they have bipolar 2 or soft bipolar disorder, it was a total waste of my money because I KNOW I have bipolar 2. The section on treatments doesn't cover some of the best medications I have experienced, gives the same old "walk" exercise advice, and has many chapters based on ruling out bipolar altogether. I think the author just wanted to say he wrote something new, when this is really a long-winded rehash on what we already know if we are already diagnosed correctly. I was terribly disappointed as I thought there would be some helpful, new information on treatments just for us with bipolar 2 that is different from bipolar 1. Boring.
Fantastic.......2007-06-09
I've suffered with anxiety and depression for many years, only to discover recently (through an astute doc) that I'm BP II. I decided to buy this book to further my understanding and I felt like I was reading my lifestory! It's an excellent read.

Worth every penny and much more!.......2007-04-02
As a physician considering offering PT services,I found this book excellent. Everything from ICD-9 to CPT crosswalks, to negotiating with managed care, to courting a referring doctor is covered here. Good general primer on running any type of healthcare practice.
awesome book.......2007-03-08

I have thoroughly enjoyed and read this wonderful masterpiece of a how-to-book! A great buy for anyone interested in starting and managing their own physical therapy practice.
Customer Reviews:
Great book to answer questions.......2007-06-05
This book was a lamb and ewe saver. My very first lambing season I had the lambing chapter practically memorized before hand. And my first ewe had problems. But by reading the hints, encouragement from my husband and gritting my teeth - I got the lamb pulled out. Saved both the lamb and ewe - second lamb born with no problems. Lambs are now six weeks old and growing like weeds.
Managing Your Ewe.......2000-07-07
If you can only afford one book on breeding or managing ewes and lambs, make it this one. The format for diagnosing your ewes problem, condition, emergency or whatever, is absolutely clear and accurate. This is the best information available. Highly recommended.
NO BARN SHOULD BE WITHOUT ONE !!!.......1998-03-09
I am a vet tech and this book has gotten me through alot of questions, not to mention helping me with my own flock of sheep. This book is right on the seat of my truck along side my Border Collie "Don" when I go out on farm calls. Never leave without it. I like the fact that all the dosages are right in the book no need to take time to figure it out. Great book !

Customer Reviews:
The book is a little hard to read.......2007-10-01
My professor warned us in advance that it will be a hard read.. IT IS but I have to read it for Health Care Management.
Enjoying this book so far!!.......2007-09-28
This is the required book for my Health Service Administration course. It is well written and has excellent case studies with each unit.
I hate this book!!.......2004-02-26
I absolutely without a doubt hate this book. It is a required book for a course that I am taking. It uses way to many initials instead of writing the complete name of each organization, so unless you have one heck of a memory you arn't sure which organization that those initials stand for. It is a very hard book to sit down and read because it is way to boring, the authors go on and on about about the topics instead of presenting the topics in a clear straight forward way. The questions at the end of each chapter are mostly based on your opinion, so you are never quite sure if your answer is correct or not. I can't wait till this class is over so that I never have to read this book again!!!
U wanna know why this is an excellent book.......2000-10-30
I rate this book as an excellent book because it has covered a wide variety of things you would like to learn in health services.

Right on Target.......2001-05-02
Susan Keane Baker has so much knowledge in this important area of health care and she shares with us her many insights and suggestions in an interesting, easy-to-read manner. This is definitely a book for all health care professionals and executives to keep on a nearby shelf as a ready reference over the years. Susan covers so many topics that are essential for patient retention, such as anticipating patient needs and preferences and making sure that patient complaints are dealt with in a timely and caring manner. As a longtime consultant in patient communication myself, I can testify that my colleague Susan has done a superb job with this book. Its all there - which makes this 5 stars for sure. It's easy to see why this book is a top seller!
Must Reading for Healthcare Professionals.......2000-02-17
There is so much valuable, pragmatic and helpful information in this book! The woefully underestimated value of listening, the best way to handle a patient complaint, creating a "patient -friendly" environment. It's all here...presented in an engaging, well organized and insightful manner. Satisfying patients goes far beyond taking surveys. I recommend this book to all my clients!
I wish I could give this book 6 stars.......1999-11-21
I bought this book after Press Ganey recommended it in their October 1999 client advisory newsletter. It's full of practical ideas that anyone working in a health care setting can use. Excellent!
Terrific and easy to read guide for any practitioner........1999-11-16
Just could not put it down. Gets to the issues that plague our healthcare system and helps physicians and other provider recognize the "best pratices" available to them to retain patients. Patients should enjoy this book as well to confirm their rationale for demanding medical and service excellence. It's a must read for all quality improvement directors, risk managers and administrators alike.
Excellent, practical info for anyone working in healthcare.......1998-08-27
This book offers practical information and advice on dealing with individuals in a healthcare setting. It is an excellent tool for the direct healthcare provider, as well as for those working behind the scenes. Reading this book reminded me of why I entered the healthcare profession in the first place - to make a difference. I think this book will also have great appeal to the patient who wants to be more knowledgeable about his/her healthcare and what to look for in a physician/patient relationship. Healthcare providers who pay attention to service excellence are destined for future success, and the information in this book will help you attain it!
Book Description
Catastrophe Modeling: A New Approach to Managing Risk is the first book that systematically analyzes how catastrophe models can be used for assessing and managing risks of extreme events. It focuses on natural disaster risk, but also discusses the management of terrorism risk. A unique feature of this book is the involvement of three leading catastrophe modeling firms, AIR Worldwide, EQECAT, and Risk Management Solutions, who examine the role of catastrophe modeling in rate setting, portfolio management and risk financing.
Using data from three model cities (Oakland, CA, Long Beach, CA and Miami/Dade County, FLA), experts from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania examine the role of catastrophe modeling to develop risk management strategies for reducing and spreading the losses from future disasters. Given the uncertainties associated with terrorism the book points out the opportunities for utilizing catastrophe models to set insurance rates and to examine public-private partnerships for providing financial assistance in the event of a terrorist attack.
"This book fills a critical need in setting forth the role of modern risk analysis in managing catastrophe risk. There is no comparable reference work for this important subject area. The book is well written and well organized. It contains contributions from many of the most distinguished experts in the fields of risk analysis and risk management. It strikes a good balance between the technical aspects of the subject and the practical aspects of decision making."
"This book is strongly recommended for individuals who must make decisions regarding the management of impacts of catastrophe risks including those in both the public and private sector."
Wilfred D. Iwan
Professor of Applied Mechanics, Emeritus
Director, Earthquake Engineering Research Laboratory
California Institute of Technology
"The authors have captured the essence of catastrophe modeling: its value, its utility and its limitations. Every practitioner in the catastrophe risk field should read this book."
Franklin W. Nutter, President
Reinsurance Association of America
Customer Reviews:
Disaster insurance rate determination (guessing or otherwise).......2005-08-11
An excellent survey of disaster insurance premium estimation. The volume is written by a variety of contributors, but they follow an outline predetermined by the editors. The material starts with an introduction to natural disasters (hurricanes and earthquakes), then reviews the primary 'technique' recommended by the authors: using GIS databases and sophisticated computer models to predict disaster costs (disaster models). Unfortunately, the details of running these models are hard to communicate without giving the reader access to an interface of a sample model.
Despite this difficulty, there is an excellent chapter detailing the legal battles between the insurance industry and consumer advocates. The battle was fought after the Northridge, CA earthquake, and the GIS data and disaster models were the heavy artillery employed by the insurance brokers. The authors review difficult issues regarding 'fair premium price' determination for regulated retail insurance policies. The purchasers of disaster insurance tend to see the brokers collecting risk-free profits. The brokers counter that the Northridge earthquake insurance payouts exceed all the premiums paid in California for over 20 years. Elsewhere the authors mention hurricane Andrew insurance payouts exceeded all insurance payments ever collected in Florida.
The final chapter covers 'terrorism insurance', and represents an excellent survey of issues facing the insurance industry after September 11. One of the interesting issues raised in the mismatch between industry assessment of 'fair premium' and public assumptions that a 9/11 type disaster could not happen, again. At least this is what sale of terrorism insurance demonstrates.
The book will probably suggest more questions than it answers. In particular, the chapter on terrorism raises interesting issues about 'governmental' coverage versus 'private' coverage. At a certain level, victims of terrorism can expect taxpayers to 'aid' those suffering from the disaster. 'Aid' is another term for insurance, but 'coverage' is universal and payments hidden in various taxes. Coming up with fair 'retail terrorism insurance premiums' seems beyond the capabilities of the US insurance system. The problems are structural and won't go away any time soon.
Catastrophe Modeling: A New Approach to Managing Risk .......2005-07-24
Excellent choice to educate user community -- topic well presented to lead "those less comfortable with statistics" through the Catastrophe Risk modeling history and process
Excellent!.......2005-04-03
This book covers so many great topics that it is impossible to go into all of them in an amazon review. Suffice to say, for anyone in the reinsurance business, or anyone interested in risk management in general, this is simply a terrific book. The subject matter is dense, but the writing is lucid and engaging. Nicely done!

Key to the Heart.......2007-06-09
...written in an understandable and interesting style, this book explains breathwork in a modern way with modern research. I was recommended the HeartMath technique by my dentist to reduce my parasympathetic response so my major dentalwork would heal better. HeartMath techniques effect the whole body and offer those who suffer from staying in their "flight or fight" nervous system a way to easily access their "feed and breed" one more often.
