If there ever was a pair of docs who can make the small intestine seem truly intriguing, here they are. Dr. Mehmet Oz is an alternative-medicine maverick and a cardiologist known to implement acupuncture during open-heart surgery. Dr. Michael Roizen developed the RealAge concept of calculating one's biological, as opposed to chronological, age. Here they've whipped up a witty guide to the workings of the entire body, appropriate not just for those who can't tell their pancreas from their pituitary. Even Cheers' Cliff Claven types who think they know it all will likely be humbled by the 50-question "body-quotient" quiz that starts off the book.

With much sassy humor (they describe the adrenals as similar in shape to Mr. Potato Head's hat), they give a guided tour of the body's anatomy and major systems (hormonal, nervous, digestive, sensory, etc.) including plenty of fascinating trivia along the way. How often should you get your thyroid level checked? How much gas does the average person produce in a day? And, most important, how many times a year do most people have sex?? Drs. Oz and Roizen know. They also reveal plenty of bizarre (and potentially life-saving) facts such as this: If your earlobe has a prominent vertical wrinkle, it's likely that your arteries are aging faster than they ought to be. If only 8th-grade health class had been this fun.

The docs' main goal in presenting all this info is twofold: first, it's your body, so shouldn't you finally learn how it works? And, second, they want to help teach ways of preserving the body's health and youthfulness. To that end, they've included an "Owner's Manual Diet," a 10-day menu plan designed not for weight loss, but to make you feel "years younger." Its simple recipes are each meant to benefit a certain body system, such as Tomato Bruschetta, packed with the antioxidant lycopene, which has been proven to boost immunity. --Erica Jorgensen

Book Description

Between your full-length mirror and high-school biology class, you probably think you know a lot about the human body. While it's true that we live in an age when we're as obsessed with our bodies as we are with celebrity hairstyles, the reality is that most of us know very little about what chugs, churns, and thumps throughout this miraculous, scientific, and artistic system of anatomy. Yes, you've owned your skin-covered shell for decades, but you probably know more about your cell-phone plan than you do about your own body. When it comes to your longevity and quality of life, understanding your internal systems gives you the power, authority, and ability to live a healthier, younger, and better life.

You: The Owner's Manual challenges your preconceived notions about how the human body works and ages, then takes you on a tour through all of the highways, back roads, and landmarks inside of you. After taking a quiz that tests your body of knowledge, you'll learn about all of your blood-pumping, food-digesting, and keys-remembering systems and organs.

Just as important, you'll get the facts and advice you need to keep your body running long and strong. You'll find out how diseases start and how they affect your body -- as well as advice on how to prevent and beat conditions that threaten your quality of life. Complete with exercise tips, nutritional guidelines, simple lifestyle changes, and alternative approaches, You: The Owner's Manual gives you an easy, comprehensive, and life-changing how-to plan for fending off the gremlins of aging. To top it off, you'll also get the great-tasting and calorie-saving Owner's Manual Diet -- a thirty-recipe eating plan that's designed with only one goal in mind: to help you live a younger life.

Welcome to your body. Why don't you come on in and take a look around?

This book is very informative. It takes the human body and breaks it down so anyone can understand it. I have learned a great deal about my body and the abuse I do to it. Would recommend it to anyone and everyone. Oh, and I love the humor too!

3 out of 5 stars Heath for Dummies.......2007-10-06

Health for dummies. Fun and quick reading. But, before you buy the book. Look through the 50 question quiz. If you are interested in the questions and were not able to answer them, then go ahead and buy.

Look at the menus at the back of the book. If you are not interested in changing your diet, you might look elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Tried to be a little too funny.......2007-10-01

I liked this book, but ended up skipping over a lot of the parts that were supposed to be funny. I would have liked the pictures to be labeled correctly, not with funny made up names for body parts.

5 out of 5 stars You: The Owner's Manual.......2007-09-29

Great stuff, easy read. Very informative. I read it and then my Mom read it.

5 out of 5 stars Very "YOUseful".......2007-09-28

In short, just a very informative book that is successful in achieving several goals. For one, it educates the reader in the inner workings of the human body. It does this quite entertainingly through trivia, facts, and interesting pictures (for instance the authors use a lot of elves). Additionally, the book also gives you many helpful tips on self-care and how to keep your body running smoother. While there is a lot information, I really would like to have seen a reference section at the end of the book. All in all though, it's a pretty informative and amusing read that should enhance the well-being of many. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff for readers who might need more specific info on shoulder pain and rotator cuff self-care.

Book Description

Possibly the most famous and widely used resource in therapeutic bodywork (required for national massage therapy certification), this beautifully written, detailed, and reader-friendly picture of how and why the body responds to touch is both scientifically reliable and inspiring. Furthering the presentation of recent research in biochemistry, cell biology, and energy medicine in the Second Edition, this new update includes advances in neurophysiology and physics, reconfiguring knowledge of mind and body, from "microgenesis" to "quantum consciousness." A rare book that fits general reader as much as professional and student.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Informative Book.......2007-05-13

This is a terrific book for anyone interested in exploring the human body. It's good on the details and good on the big picture. It's a fascinating and revealing reference work on the workings of the human body.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Job's Body: A Handbook for Bodywork by Deane Juhan.......2007-03-29

For anyone interested in anatomy and physiology or alternatives to medicines alone this is a wonderful book to read and reference. It gives some excellent insights into healing by touch and bodywork a must for al types of therapists.

5 out of 5 stars essential.......2006-09-09

this work is an essential addition to any practitioner's library who wishes to markedly enhance their understanding and communication of care to their patients. Juhan uses brilliant, in-depth scientific notation in an easy-to-read format. brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars Complex, Eye Opening, Vital.......2006-06-15

If you are a doctor, physical therapist, massage or bodywork therapist of any kind with an appetite for in depth analysis and understanding of the human response to touch, this book is a MUST HAVE for you. It's technical and detailed, and it is also ground breaking, eye-opening and very exciting.

Juhan covers the topic of the human response to touch from the micro-cellular level through to system responses all the way to the origins of the body/mind split in western philosphy and the consequences of pharmaceutical dominance in health care on touch therapies. He introduces many new perspectives that bring a rich vitality to anatomy. He shows the interactivity - the interconnectedness - the interdependence of all aspects of the human body, mind and being. He presents some of the latest theories about how the body mind are integrated and communicate - Candace Pert's molecules of emotion.

Not only is Juhan's research fascinating and valuable to body workers, but also his method of inquiry, the questions he asks, and how he asks and seeks to answer them, are also very educational - modeling ways we can pursue the investigation ourselves.

Here are a few examples of the kind of insight that Juhan offers in the Third Edition:

Page 17

"This personal, sensory engagement with the self does not spring from a rebellion against scientific authority, but rather from a realization of the present inadequacy of that authority's conception of reality, a realization that is not contrived for the purpose of debate, but which is forced upon [us] by [our] own painful circumstances."

"When the conceptions of reality that we maintain do not square with the things we are experiencing, it is not because we are flawed or because our experiences are wrong, but because our conceptions cannot contain all of the facts as we perceive them. And there is no constructive way out of this crisis but to enlarge our sense of reality to include our actual experiences."

Page 142

"The goal of bodywork should not be to impose universalized standards of posture and movement upon an individual, but rather to help the individual to cultivate the mental awareness and the physical flexibility to continually adapt to the changing needs of the moment."

Page 184

"Muscles that have fallen into disuse and flaccidity just don't provide enough pumping action for these intercellular fluids to adequately feed and bathe the nerve cells, and so the general strength of their functions is diminished."

Page 412

"Subjective and objective are not two distinct ways I have of viewing reality; they are two sides of a continuous feedback loop which together make up that reality. How completely I sense my body and how I feel about it has everything to do with the particular course of events going on within it."

5 out of 5 stars Job's Body: A Handbook for Bodywork.......2005-09-22

A bit on the technical side for other than those familiar within the medical field, but would strongly advise reading Job's Body for insight and learning about one's own self. A learning experience definately.

5 out of 5 stars The Calcium Factor Is A Must For Every Home.......2007-07-20

I was very impressed with Robert Barefoot's scientific background, research and conviction to saving Americans as well as the world from themselves and big Pharma. I have applied this information to my own life with astonishing results. Just a few short months ago I thought I was on a doomed path to lifelong chronic disease or early death. After a trip to the ER and follow-ups with my doctors I suggested that perphaps I could have a nutritional deficiency or maybe chronic dehydration was a problem as I knew myself I had not been drinking enough water. This was dismissed by the medical community as nonsense without any testing to prove otherwise. I was told on top of all my other problems, I now had fibromyalgia and was told that there is no cure but we can control it with several prescription drugs (for the rest of my life). Observing the way my doctors were so willing to dismiss nutrition sent me running, and this was before I embarked on a natural, nutritional path. My own commense sense raise serious red flags. I left there and headed for the Internet to research anything I could find on each one of my symptoms, one-by-one. I started a journal with a section devoted to each symptom and researched every known deficiency that would cause that one symptoms instead of looking at all my symptoms as a whole. When I broke down my research in this manner, I suddenly started coming up with 3 main culprits that kept reappearing with each symptom: Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium as well as water and oxgyen. This led me to Robert Barefoot's book, The Calcium Factor, which I eagerly purchased and read within hours of its arrival. It made the most sense of anything I had read or been told to date. Ironically, about the same time I got this book, a friend told me about her experiences and frustrations with her doctor and how she turned she skeptically turned to a procedure called "BioMeridian Feedback" and how it turned her life around. I then found a BioMeridan Feedback Specialist in my area and quickly made an appointment, thinking I had nothing to lose by trying. I was very skeptical so didn't tell the therapist any of my ailments, only that I had heard of this and wanted to check it out. What happened next blew me away. She told me exactly the symptoms I had been experiencing and told me I had a deficiency in Calcium and Potassium. This therapist also informed me that my most serious problem that needed addressing first was acid. This backed up what I had read in this book so I embarked on a regimen of ionic minerals and ionic coral calium. Within days my health and my life began to turn around. Symptoms were disappearing rapidly, my mental acuity sharply increased and I had an incredible surge in energy. I needlessly suffered for over 10 years from symptoms that left me debilitated with pain, fatigue and brain fog, all the while being treated by numerous medical doctors who not once addressed nutrition. A few years back I asked one of my doctors if I could ever hope to be pain free. His reply was, "if you ever wake up and find that you no longer have any pain to be immedialely suspicious that you are dead". No hope was offered by my doctors and apparently a positive mental attitude was not important to them either as this one statement sent me into a state of depression that lasted for years. So as far as I am concerned Robert Barefoot and the others who work tirelessly to bring to light the importance of giving our bodies what GOD put here for us and what we were built to run on should be praised for they are truly Angels. I have since bought several copies of this book for family members and friends. As far as some of the comments about Barefoot's literary skills, I say who gives a s---. I'm not interested in glossy words or propaganda, I can get that from the doctors, I want real evidence and real answers to real problems and that is what Barefoot delivers.

4 out of 5 stars Super book.......2007-07-11

Enjoyed the book. Had already become informed about the deficiencies of
calcium in our American diet. Coral calcium is excellent. Stay with
a top-notch maker such as Standard Process. I don't sell it or have any financial ties to it- just get it from my health care provider - Dr. of
nutrition. Better brands cost more and are dispensed only by health care providers, but you don't have to worry about contamination.
Also, natural health care providers are aware that your tissues can still be acidic even
though the blood may say you are over alkaline. That happens because when
the tissues are acidic and need more alkaline, the body drafts calcium (which is alkaline) from the bones and sends it into the bloodstream to try to compensate. Blood alkaline readings above the normal 7.365 always indicate that the tissues are acidic and the body is sending its alkaline stores (mostly from bones) into the bloodstream to protect your organs.
The only way I could get sane with what to do for my health was to
find a professional who could guide my path. Many chiropractors are also
natural doctors (DN's)and dispense products such as Standard Process
which you can count on.
Give Barefoot a break. He has a good message and nobody's perfect.

4 out of 5 stars to our health.......2007-01-03

This book is a must read for anyone who wants to prevent at least 152 degenerative diseases that we know of! It explains why calcium is SO important to the body, and how it does what it does for us in our bodies. I can prevent cancer just by keeping my body alkaline, since cancer can't live in an alkaline body! Test strips are available to test your saliva so you can keep up on whether or not you are alkaline on any given day and act accordingly. I have been taking coral calcium for years now and am rarely sick. Since just about everyone in my family died of some type of cancer, I am particularly interested in prevention of this disease for myself, my husband, and my two children. I was so excited about this book that I told my holistic doctor about it, to see if he had heard of it and he said, "great book...I have it on my desk in my office." This isn't just, my opinion.
This book is filled with good solid facts on this subject. So for any of you out there who are interested in good health and prevention of lots of degerative diseases, this book is a real gem, and might just prolong your life!

4 out of 5 stars Can't Argue With What Works!.......2006-07-09

Many people have criticized Barefoot for making unsubstantiated claims about coral calcium. I am sure that this calcium doesn't work as effectively for everyone, but it sure worked for me(back pain) my mother,(arthritis), my friend, (pain in foot from diabetes), and as an energy booster to many of my friends. I can't say that it cures cancer. I only know of one guy who used
it for that. He survived, but he was also taking other traditional treatments. But it has lowered my blood pressure, and done so much more. It works!

5 out of 5 stars health enhancer.......2006-03-24

If you, like me, feel uncomfortable with the idea of present cancer treatments that wipe out the immune system, maybe this book has a better way. It references recent medical articles. Slow in parts, but once I realized the theory, I found myself reading it over and over, rechecking each part. I intend to buy some ph paper and test my saliva according to the book. If it shows that I am not in the healthy range, I will work on my diet and supplements until I am in the healthy range. If it works, great. If it does not work, it at least will have me eating more fruits and vegies. Joe

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-05-21

This book is very easy to understand. Even if you're not going to color in it, it is a great reference book.

3 out of 5 stars It is okay for basic stuff.......2007-03-11

This book is okay for basic high school knowledge, but I wouldn't really recommend it for a college course. I am taking BIO 201 (Human Anatomy and Physiology), and the book wasn't in-depth enough for my course. There were not enough of the muscles and bones covered.

2 out of 5 stars Not very comprehensive - if thats what you're looking for.......2007-02-22

This book is good for younger children or people who just want a very basic overview of the human body. I bought it to help me study for my anatomy class, and this book did not provide nearly enough detail to be a good reference guide for me. If you;re taking a college level anatomy class, buy the more expensive coloring book!

5 out of 5 stars Human Anatomy Coloring Book.......2007-02-19

This is a great Dover style coloring book. Anyone of any age can use it to review Human Anatomy. The generous copyright allows you to make 2 copies without permission. I am scanning the drawings and using them in a Powerpoint Presentation. Human anatomy is dull, and frankly our insides are kind of ugly. This sort of publication takes the formaldehyde smell
out learning anatomy. Kids could color, adults can use computer paint programs to add color. Once scanned the possiblities for using the drawings are endless.

1 out of 5 stars This book was of no use to us.......2007-02-01

We made the changes that were suggested, but found no effect on our child's behavior (which is only mildly hyperactive).

It appears some people have success with this, and that's great. Note however: it is VERY difficult to follow this diet in a family where only one child might need it.

Personally, I believe that following your kid around and critiquing every morsel of food that goes into his mouth, drives everyone crazy.

It may have been written 25 years ago but my son was a totally different child within a week of following the Feingold Diet! It's been weeks now and even he is willing to follow the diet because he says he likes the way he feels. I am so glad I will not have to put my 5 year old child on drugs that will alter his personality. This is a must read for anyone looking for a way to fix the problem and the long term affects of hyperactivity. Doping your child may be the easy way out but doesn't address the cause. This may not help all cases but it's worth a try.

5 out of 5 stars The Feingold diet saved my child's life.......2005-04-05

Dr Feingold's theory is that bad behaviour and/or learning disabilities in otherwise bright children is caused by artifical colors and flavors. Although it may seem too simplistic, it is the answer IF you, as a parent, are willing to alter your lifestyle by reading ingredient labels and preparing food that is normal, natural and healthy. A child cannot do this on their own! But you will save your child's future and maybe your own sanity. A must buy!

5 out of 5 stars MIRACULOUS TOOL NEEDED BY PARENTS/GUARDIANS.......2004-04-19

Dr. Feingold's book saved my sanity in 1985 through this book! My daughter who was absolutely unable to follow directions, or listen for more than one minute is just the beginning of descibing her challanging behavior before applying this book to her life! She was so hyperactive it meant a day of running around in circles, running up a wall, jumping off of furniture, absolutely "crazy" actions constantly. Our lives with her were sheer he--: trying to go out in public, attend religious events, visit friends/relatives, go to the park or groucery store meant an exhausting, unpleasant experience! I had taken her to a nutrionist, allergist, & psychiatrist to find an anwer and help. No specialist was able to help. I bought this book figuring that we were running out of hope; let's try it. I read this book and began following Dr. Feingold's methods exactly as he writes. Within four days my daughter's behavior changed into a normal functioning small child. My mother came to visit us on the fourth day of the Feingold Diet and was upset thinking that I had heavily medicated my daughter because her behavior was totally normal for a child her age!!!!! I explained what I did: exliminating all foods and starting fresh from scratch and slowly reintroducing foods. My daughter has NEVER been medicated for hyperactivity or any behavior disorder. We only fed her what was well tolerated. THIS BOOK IS A MIRACLE TO OUR LIVES!!!!!!! From 1985 to today has been a wonderful experience with my daughter!!!!!! She has been very successful in school (including college), sports, popular, and a pleasure to be around!!!!! This is the complete truth. I hope that other parents will take the time to get the book for the child who is "uncontrollabe, hyperactive, or unfocused" and follow it! The initial few weeks are difficult but it is worth every ounce of energy utilized!!!!! Please, for your sanity and your child's acceptance get and practice Dr. Feingold's methods to your child's life; it works!!!!

5 out of 5 stars MUST READ THIS BEFORE YOU PUT YOUR CHILD ON MEDICINE.......2003-09-20

I came across this book a few months ago while researching about hyperactive children. My son is 5 years old and he started showing signs of adhd when he was 3. He has had trouble staying in daycares due to his behavior problems and just recently started school and began seeing even more problems. Tried natural drugs and nothing worked till I read this book and changed his diet like this book says. I can not begin to tell you how much this has changed my son. I only wish I would of come across this a few years ago. If you are thinking about putting your child on prescription medicine then please try this first. I would recommend it to anyone!!

Book Description

Arnold has swallowed the Magic School Bus! Now, instead of seeing an exhibit of the human body at a museum, the class is taking a look at Arnold's stomach, his intestines, his bloodstream, and more from the inside on this heart-stopping fieldtrip - one the reluctant Arnold would be happy to miss.

5 out of 5 stars a great book out of a great series - a review by Eli (age 7).......2006-08-24

This book is really out of this world. I have been hooked on the magic school bus series. I can't wait to read more books in the series. The inside the human body book is full with very interesting facts and I learned so much from reading it. Arnold doesn't know where the bus is and is trying to find it. He doesn't even know that it is actually inside him. Then Arnold sneezes and finds the bus right next to him. He doesn't understand how he didn't see it before.

5 out of 5 stars packed with information.......2004-08-01

Ms. Frizzle is taking her class on a memorable field trip through the human body in this entertaining book featuring the beloved eccentric teacher and her curious class. My only complaint is that the pages are so busy with information that it's impossible to sit and really read the whole book, but perhaps it's best to let a child's curiosity guide you through a number of readings rather than trying to get everything in at one sitting. Concepts are expressed clearly and with humor. Justly popular with young students.

5 out of 5 stars Fifth Food Group: Magic School Buses.......2003-10-13

Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen outdo themselves in "The Magic School Bus: Inside the Human Body." It is their most ambitious collaboration yet, and it definitely doesn't disappoint.

As is the custom, the third book in this science series (written in 1989) picks up where the second story left off. Ms. Frizzle is showing her students a filmstrip about the human body. "We're going to learn all about ourselves," she says. Then she announces the next field trip - the class is heading to the museum to "see an exhibit about how our bodies get energy from the food we eat." However, anyone who has even an inkling as to the kind of person Ms. Frizzle is should know that things rarely, if ever, go according to plan. A field trip is never just a field trip when you're taking a ride aboard her magic school bus.

The Friz and her students stop at a park for lunch before arriving at the museum. Afterward, everyone goes back to the bus . . . except for Arnold! He's still sitting at a picnic table, daydreaming and eating a bag of Cheesie-Weesies. And before the class realizes what is happening, the bus shrinks to the size of a Cheesie-Weesie . . . where it is promptly downed in one gulp by Arnold!

"I thought we were going to the museum," says one student.

"There's been a slight change of plans," explains Ms. Frizzle. "We're being digested instead."

Why visit an exhibit about the human body when you have a magic school bus and a teacher like Ms. Frizzle who can take you directly to the source?

If "At the Waterworks" was like priming the pump, and "Inside the Earth" was like getting the ball rolling, "Inside the Human Body" is like plowing full-steam ahead. Cole and Degen have firmly established themselves as a literacy force to be reckoned with; this is proven in the confidence of the writing and the boldness of the illustrations. There is so much going on in this story that you almost need a scorecard to keep track of it all. It seems as though Cole and Degen are bound and determined to one-up themselves with every book they come out with.

A list of some things Ms. Frizzle educates her class about would include: blood cells (red and white), blood vessels, digestion, germs, the heart, lungs, molecules, oxygen, plasma, the small intestine, etc. Do you know what villi are? You will after you read this book! Any idea what the cerebral cortex does? Ms. Frizzle will show you! Ever wondered why you sneeze? The answer resides in this story!

"Inside the Human Body" deserves just as much, if not more, a home on a person's bookshelf as does "At the Waterworks" and "Inside the Earth." Cole and Degen loaded their latest adventure to the bursting-point with information. You can see the growth author and illustrator have taken since their inaugural effort with "At the Waterworks." They prove that some things do, indeed, get better with age.

At the end of "Inside the Human Body" is a true-false test to help readers distinguish what things were true in the story and what things were made up. And, of course, Ms. Frizzle drops another clue as to where her next great adventure will take us. I'm pretty sure the class will think of their next field trip as out of this world!

It doesn't seem possible, but Cole and Degen managed to improve upon an already-winning formula. They are both in top form with "Inside the Human Body," a field trip that will take you from the brain to the small intestine and back again. Well, what are you waiting for? Hitch a ride on the magic school bus!

As Ms. Frizzle herself would say, "Seatbelts, everyone!"

5 out of 5 stars My daughter loves Magic School Bus.......2003-06-19

My daughter is 3 1/2 years old. I got this book and wasn't sure if it would be to complicated for her. She loves it! I have ordered a few more Magic School Bus books and she can't get enough of them. She even drew a picture of her Daddy's red blood cells! It was hilarious. But best of all, she enjoys them so much. They are her favorite books and she is learning about science. I wish I had these when I was a kid.

My son likes this book. It gives some good insights into germs and our bodies. he likes the entires Magic School Bus series - but this is one of his favorites. An easy read before bedtime - just the right length.

5 out of 5 stars A new approach.......2005-09-09

I just heard this author speak at a teacher's conference. The material presented was excellent, and reflected the fresh and new approach of this book. I am so pleased that finally there is a book that treats the subject of body mechanics in a functional and practical way. This book is exactly what our profession has been waiting for. Buy it and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2005-08-25

If you are a massage student, therapist, or teacher of massage therapy, you should buy this book. It's the best book written on body mechanics. It provides all the information needed to sustain a healthy massage career. The burn-out rate for massage therapists is too short; this book will help to eliminate it.

5 out of 5 stars A Gem.......2005-05-20

I've been teaching massage for over 15 years, and in all that time I've never come across such a wonderful book on body mechanics. This book is a gem. As a teacher I find its content up-to-date and concise. The photos are clear, the exercises are brilliant, and the tips for students are an extra bonus. My students have learned an incredible amount from this book, and I see it in their work with each other. I wouldn't be without this book in the classroom, and my students will be so thankful for it after they graduate.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2004-11-26

I was recently at a massage convention. This book was by far the best one there on the subject of body mechanics. Its functional approach, illustrations, layout, and overall format not only make it easy to use, but a pleasure as well. All others fail to brighten up an otherwise historically dry subject. It will relight your fire and renew your, perhaps neglected, promise of self-care!

5 out of 5 stars Save Your Body Now!.......2004-09-15

If you are a therapist, of any kind, you must buy this book. I use mine almost everyday to help keep myself injury free - and so far, so good. I also use the "client education tips" regularly to education my clients. The book also has helpful "practice tips" which help me to remember good body mechanics when at the table. I love this book - so will you!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This book answered questions I didn't know I had, and showed me where a great deal of my day to day knowledge originated........2006-10-17

I am a clinical massage therapist in Seattle, WA. I was trained in a method of manual therapy called Neuromuscular therapy by its founder, Paul St. John I came to understand the importance of balance in the structure of the body. When a friend gave me an original copy of this book: 'Rolfing: Reestabling...' by Dr. Rolf I fell right into it. Dr. Rolf was the progenitor of a point of view that stresses a.}close examination of the alignment and physical (or structural) balance of the body, b.} a direct relationship between structure and function in this regard, and c.} the notion that a manual approach can re-organize the body in a deep and meaninful way. I kept discovering very quotable passages, and thinking 'That's what I always say'. I came to see that without Ida Rolf as my grandmother in the field of hands on therapy, I could never have been trained in a way that I could have had those insights. A very validating experience to find that you had got the message, even when you really derived it from things that you heard second hand.

As a text, this book goes a long ways to filling in some of the mysterious blanks in our understanding of the body and it's function in gravity. It has enjoyable prose, flowing description and explanation, countless photos of case studies, and even more valuably it has a great number of hand-drawn illustrations, I beleive by Ida Rolf herself. The book covers specific subjects that are not undertaken by any other texts I have read in this field, where balance and structural orientation are concerned (look for the biomechanical description of the function of the pelvic floor, for example).
For people who work with the body in a hands-on clinical fashion, this book is a classic. It would fill a great gap on the shelf on anyone concerned with physical examination as well.

I can heartilly reccommend the book at this price, too.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful........2006-10-02

I was very gladly surprised when I saw how well Rolf writes, as I was expecting the originator of Structural Integration therapy to use a "heavy" language, like F.M. Alexander did in his books on the Alexander Technique. The only thing keeping me from breezing through this book are my own ponderings on the insights Rolf constantly gives me. If you are interested in the human body in any way, get this (you should get it anyway, you will become interested!).

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2003-08-28

This book is invaluable in understanding the inter-relationships within the human body--and nothing is more important for proper assessment and treatment of myofascia. This is not a technique book, rather a book which details the fundamental principles of stuctural bodywork. It will aid any therapist in gaining a deeper understanding of the human body and avoiding the all-too-common problem of symptom chasing. Read this book to understand how structure effects function, and function effects health.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting, informative reading!.......2003-02-19

I found this book to be very helpful in deepening my understanding of the way the different parts of the body are interconnected and interdependent. It has influenced my yoga practice and my teaching. I better understand how the physical practice of yoga helps with spiritual transformation. I highly recommend this to anyone who wishes to be actively involved in your own transformation and evolution. This book will help yoga teachers identify the bony landmarks on the body to help brighten a student's alignment and free up energy in the body. It starts from the feet and moves up, just as you would create any pose. The language is easy to understand and there are many valuable drawings and photographs which illustrate each point.

4 out of 5 stars Superior book on posture and movement.......2000-03-21

Rolfing can make profound changes in posture and movement. This book tries to get beyond the medical dissection model of anatomy and really get at the way the core postural muscles are supposed to coordinate movement. The chapter on the psoas is worth the price of the book.

This IS NOT a how-to on Rolfing nor does it get into the transformative powers of Rolfing from the perspective of someone who is undergoing processing. It is more a book of anatomy and kinesiology.

Book Description

Offering a student-friendly writing style, this text presents a body systems approach with a strong emphasis on vocabulary and basic anatomy and physiology concepts, as well as the basic mechanisms of disease and pathologic conditions associated with each body system. This comprehensive text is dominated by two unifying themes: the complementarity of structure and function and homeostasis. The integrating principle of homeostasis is used to show how "normal" structure and function is achieved and maintained. Failures of homeostasis are shown as basic mechanisms of disease. The reader is drawn into the subject by superior illustrations, including cadaver dissections, and other student-friendly features.

5 out of 5 stars massage school book.......2007-03-13

This book is a must have for the massage student. The information is put together in an easy to read format and the study aid is excellent for review and testing.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best.......2006-11-23

I had to buy this book as a text for a class I'm taking for my degree in Medical Transcription. I came into this class with zero background in Anatomy and physiology. There are some things I like about this book and some I don't.

First, this book is jammed full of interesting information. I love the way it breaks down the different body systems and explains them. I also thought the diagrams were very well done and very easy to understand.

Now for the negative. My biggest complaint is that it wasn't always easy to determine what to write down. I wish they would have bolded or italicized key terms. At times, I thought the writing got a little technical and confusing sometimes. Especially the chapter on the nervous system.

Also, I think this text tends to be very wordy. They take a whole paragraph to say something that could easily be said in a couple sentences.

But overall, I think this is a good book for someone who has little or no experience in anatomy and physiology.

4 out of 5 stars A good summer read........2006-05-27

First, let me explain myself a little so that you may know where I am coming from. I am a pre-med biology major who will be a senior for the fall '06 term. I have never had any A&P class whatsoever because the biology department's requirements...well, that is another story. I bought this book because it is not too detailed to lose sight of the big picture but just detailed enough to explain pretty much all the A&P that will be on the MCAT. Of course, this book has tons of stuff that is NOT tested on the MCAT, but I have the examkracker books and I use this book for the (very) few times examkrackers does a poor job explaining things. It's also always good to read the same thing from various sources because the information is much easier to retain that way. I like the pathology that is intermixed throughout the entire book, and the outline pages at the end of each chapter are nice as well as the "case studies" that you are presented with. All in all, this book would be 5 stars for its high yield, one semester A&P (and some pathology) content, but I had to take off one star for the abysmal section on nutrition and metabolism. Glycolysis, CAC, and ETC are barely mentioned. The one or two figures are childish (the others are really good). I may be biased though because I just got out of biochemistry and metabolism was beaten into my brain. Still, I can recommend this to those who want a cheap, basic A&P book to supplement their MCAT Biology studying. The pathology stuff is just bonus and fun to read as sort of a segway into my senior year and my pathology class.

5 out of 5 stars The Human Body in Health and Disease.......2006-03-23

The book uses in depth, even microscopic scientific detail to explain human anatomy and human body functions, and does so in an ultra clear manner, regularly repeating in different words what is most important to understand. Repetition has and always will be the best way to learn. I had to wonder how the text might compare to textbooks used on college and university campuses, since I am using the book simply for an online certification, but for now the new knowledge is a head full for me, and probably will be for some time to come. It is very fun to know so much now about all the parts of the brain and the body, and about how all of our bodies function, subjects I had not previously studied in spite of much higher education.

4 out of 5 stars A good intro to anatomy and physiology.......2001-09-24

This book is designed to be an introduction to A & P and it does that very well. I didn't give the book a perfect 5 star rating for a couple of reasons. First, I have a background in anatomy and found some of their explanations of a few body systems to be confusing even though I already knew the information. This was particularly true of their explanation of the Autonomic Nervous System. In general, most things are explained well and have a lot of really helpful accompanying figures and tables.

The only other thing that I don't particularly like is the way the pathology is integrated. I feel like it was a little to heavy on the disease end of things. This is really sort of a personal preference, I am not really a pathologist so I didn't feel the need to have that information. It just depends on your focus of study.

The thing I really like about the book is the review section at the end. First, there is an extremely helpful outline summary, which is really handy if you didn't understand something in the chapter. Second, there is a chapter test that can help you review and test what you learned.

The only shortcoming of the review section at the end is that it doesn't have all the key terms (in bold type throughout the chapter) listed. In my studying, I generally went back through the chapter page by page after reading it and wrote down each key term and its definition instead of using the list in the review section. Also, all the key terms that are in bold print are not in the glossary, which I think they should be if they are going to go out of their way to make them bold.

All in all, a good introduction. Definitely pick up the student study guide that is designed to go with this text, as it will definitely help you study.
