Patient Advocacy at it's best.......2007-09-03
This book is written toward the average layperson and something that has been needed for a long time. As a nurse, I read this book as research. I speak on the topic of patient advocacy and have an independent practice as a case manager. This information (for the most part)is the very information I share with others on a regular basis. For anyone who has ever left the physician's office confused about what they are expected to do next, this book will encourage you to take control of your own health information. I feel that anyone who takes this information to heart will become a smarter patient, one who is in more control of their medical health, and able to save money from unnecessary repeated diagnostic studies and the like. The resources and health history sections are worth the cost of the book.

The information on the drugs comes from the manufacturer, has been blessed by the manufacturer's medical department and is based on information officially filed with the FDA. This book contains a lot of clinically relvant information which is easily
accessible to the busy reader.This guide can be read as a whole or it can
serve as a reference book. In every case the book can be recommended to
medical students as well as to experienced doctors.

This book was required for a class and while the information that is covered is very thorough, they seem to leave many other things out. There is also a lot of page jumping to follow information. Definitely would not be my first choice.

As a physician I have referenced many books on laboratory medicine. This is by far one of the best for providing a concise,understandable, and more importantly, practical means of understanding laboratory tests and their clinical relevance.
A Great Book to Learn From.......2004-10-20
Dr. Desai's book is thorough and well organized; a fantastic reference to help you work through case studies and patient admissions. It is most useful for meticulous internal medicine patient write-ups. I highly recommend it to all med students, especially those going into the clinical years.

The "Financial Planning Handbook for Physicians and Advisors" is essentially a "how-to book" on finance, financial planning and related topics for healthcare providers. Fortunately for patients, medicine requires a high degree of professional training, both in terms of science and technology. Unfortunately for providers, it affords little time for learning about financial or investment planning.
More to the point, this is an unusual textbook on financial planning for two reasons. First, it is a detailed guide for physician's seeking the complex road to success and profit in the confusing healthcare industrial complex. Rarely does one see such clarity of presentation, without the usual jargon that often discourages those trying to learn such a foreign and forbidding subject, as finance. Second, the subject matter is focused for medical providers who work in one of the fastest growing industries in the United States. The contributors hope that by integrating the disciplines of financial planning, they will help foster affordable and profitable healthcare for our nation, which is so entrepreneurial, yet aging.
In my thirty-five years on Wall Street, I have observed that physicians are particularly disadvantaged when it comes to anything regarding finance. Most medical professionals have enough on their mind practicing their specialty and keeping up with healthcare technology and practice trends, that planning for their financial future is often forgotten. Financial planning and good investment practices require a solid background of how corporations work in the "real world", and an awareness of how they function within the economy. These economic essentials are vital to understanding practice, as principles like budgeting, risk management, cash flow analysis, fiscal benchmarking and rudimentary accounting are presented in this book. Furthermore, the necessity of keeping up with state and federal insurance legislation, tax laws, retirement, and estate planning is obvious, and included.
"Financial Planning Handbook for Physicians and Advisors" focuses on financial planning and how the healthcare professional can increase personal knowledge and skills in this area. The coverage is both broad and yet detailed, ranging from basic macroeconomic factors that affect our national economy, such as the Gross Domestic Product (a single figure that summarize the business activity of the US), to the more mundane activities of maintaining cash flow, college funding, tax reduction strategies, home mortgages and even correcting credit card reporting errors. More sophisticated topics include: debt and equity investment vehicles, derivatives, mutual fund and hedge fund investing, portfolio management and risk analysis, and the new laws on tax, retirement, and estate planning. The book rightly concludes with practice succession planning for doctors and a chapter on the psychological meaning of money itself.
It seems to me that all those in healthcare are well-served by reading this book with it's format and step-by-step setup process for financial success, in terms of starting and ultimately surviving in a complicated business full of pitfalls and misinformation. Most useful will be the extremely detailed table of contents that allows the user to quickly pinpoint an area of interest, and get started answering a problem.
Simply put, my recommendation is to read the: "Financial Planning Handbook for Physicians and Advisors", and "reap".

Excellent Treatise on First Aid Procedures.......2007-01-21
This is an excellent, detailed guide to first aid procedures. It is clearly written and contains plenty of photographs. It covers CPR, Mouth to Mouth, Shock, Burns, Bleeding, and a number of other medical conditions (heart attack, asthma, etc.). All in all, it is a comprehensive treatise on first aid procedures.
However, do not buy this book and expect to refer to it in a **dire** emergency. The book is much too long and the principles of **emergency** first aid are not something that you can learn during an emergency. If you buy this book, read it before you put in with your emergency kit. Better yet, take a first aid and CPR class, and then read this book every year as a refresher.
If you encounter a medical situation that is not dire, you may have time to refer to the book. It is well-organized and each section is easy to find. However, you might be better off calling 911 first....

This book is so good all other first aid books should be used as fuel. It has concise illustrations and procedures that are as intuitive as possible in an emergency situation. Go no further.
A First Aid book written by those who know.......2001-07-06
This book is an excellent first aid book, particulairly for someone like me who only has basic first aid training. It was written by the American College of Emergency Physicians, so you know that it is truly definitive on the issue of first aid. The book is comprehensive, yet easy to use and color coded. The major benefits of the book include hundreds of photos, so that you are not simply told what to do, but shown. Another benefit is that it outlines how to handle various emergency situations, and how to exactly assist EMS when they arrive. It also tells you what you should treat and when you should call 911. A negative on the book is that it often refers you to other sections of the book during emergency procedures, something that there probably isn't time for in a real emergency. However, that should encourage your to become familiar with procedures before they happen. Overall, it is an easy to use first aid manual with lots of pictures that can help you to "[treat] emergency victims of all ages in any situation."
