Book Description
An amusing, astonishing debut . . . about how a family learns to let go of the past and live and love in the present. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
With this wise, tender, and deeply funny novel, Marina Lewycka takes her place alongside Zadie Smith and Monica Ali as a writer who can capture the unchanging verities of family. When an elderly and newly widowed Ukrainian immigrant announces his intention to remarry, his daughters must set aside their longtime feud to thwart him. For their father's intended is a voluptuous old-country gold digger with a proclivity for green satin underwear and an appetite for the good life of the West. As the hostilities mount and family secrets spill out, A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian combines sex, bitchiness, wit, and genuine warmth in its celebration of the pleasure of growing old disgracefully.
A charming comedy of eros... A ride that, despite the bumps and curves in the road, never feels anything less than jaunty. Los Angeles Times
Lewycka is a writer with a fundamentally optimistic vision of the future and a healthy curiosity about the past. Chicago Tribune
Charming, poignantly funny. The Washington Post Book World
Customer Reviews:
I had to force my self to finish..........2007-10-09
I had heard only praise for this book. I started with high hopes, but after about the second chapter I already hated it.
For me, perhaps the most annoying thing about the writing, is the authors usage of explanatory details in parentheses. She uses them a lot, way way too much. It becomes annoying and stupid when the same joke about a bit breasted Ukrainian or how someone pronounces English appears every other page in parentheses
As for the book allegedly being funny, I don't think I laughed once. The jokes are childish.
In the end, I have no idea how this book has won so much praise.
Enchanting.......2007-10-02
I found this book enchanting and different. It's not just about a foolish old man who thinks he has found love with a calculating much younger woman from the Ukraine; but about two sisters who have been estranged since their mother died. They learn to understand and like each other through their efforts to help their father (who doesn't often appreciate their efforts) escape from the ridiculous relationship.
I've known several much younger people who have been silly enough to get themselves in relationships similar to the father's. You don't have to be old or crazy to want "love".
How to grow old disgracefully.......2007-09-22
Lewycka, who has written several nonfiction books about senior citizens' issues, has written a lyrical and engaging novel about growing old disgracefully and the bonds of sisterhood.
This book, first and foremost, is hilarious. There are dozens of scenes that made me laugh out loud. First are the relationship between Nadezhda's father, Nikolai, and his tarty Ukrainian bride, Valentina. Valentina is a scene stealer. She is gruff and greedy, venal and violent. She is a larger than life character, and the white whale to the sisters' Ahab. Nikolai himself is given to melodrama and long winded speeches about tractors and engineering. Vera, Nadya's big sister, also provides a great deal of comic relief, with her jaundiced and acerbic takes on the situation with Valentina and her father. It is a bit like reading a toned down version of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding".
Lewycka also explores sibling rivalry and the relationships of estranged siblings. At the beginning of the story, Nadezhda and Vera are fighting like cats and dogs. Every encounter ends in harsh words and slammed phones. As the book progresses, the sisters steadily get closer, having been united by the common desire to get Valentina deported. As Vera and Nadezhda talk more and more, they get closer. Nadezhda finds out why her sister is the way she is, and ultimately becomes close to Vera. By the end of the book, they are cordial and even a little warm towards each other. Lewycka masterfully handles this relationship, never letting it become cloying or saccharine. It is a touching undercurrent to the outlandish events that take center stage.
Finally, Lewycka explores the differences in first and second generation immigrants. Nikolai and Vera are first generation Ukrainian immigrants, while Nadezhda is firmly British in her outlook. The sisters have had markedly different childhoods. Vera endured life in a camp during World War II, while Nadezhda was born in the U.K. It is this difference that causes the chasm between the sisters. But, Lewycka does a good job of showing how Nadezhda slowly but surely begins to understand her sister's life and her outlook on life. We also get to hear the story of Nikolai and Ludmilla, the womens' parents. Their lives in the Ukraine, through pre-Stalin days and the horrors of the purges are explored in depth. It speaks to Lewycka's skill as a writer that these interludes perfectly fit into the narrative and help the reader understand Nikolai's motivations.
A great book for someone looking to laugh and learn about immigrants.
Memorable characters.......2007-09-10
This is the story of an old Ukrainian man who decides to get married to a much younger Ukrainian divorcee and the struggle of his daughters to get their father back. This was a funny book (although not knee slapping funny) with memorable characters. The readers are told the story of family history and the father's description of the developments in tractors from the agricultural to the industrial economy. The family history presented to the reader in installments, provides insight and depth to the characters. And the information about the development of tractors helps the reader to understand and appreciate the differences between the characters.
A MUST READ.......2007-09-08
An amazing novel. Starts off light and fun but really has a deep message. She is a great author and it's one of those novels you just don't want to put down. The story is captivating and her writing style is genius! I just picked it up for a quick fun read and now it's one of my favorites! A must read!
Book Description
A chicken tractor is a bottomless, portable pen that fits over your garden beds. Just set it wherever you need help in your garden. The chickens peck and scratch the soil to clean your beds, eat pest bugs and weed seeds. Best of all, they provide eggs and meat with that old-fashioned flavor. Chicken tractors have helped thousands of gardeners have better gardens and taken chickens out of factory farms and put them in the garden where they are your personal helpers.

Some good ideas for the beginner but needs some major improvement........2007-06-06
This book has some really good, practical ideas for the beginniner.
If you are into chicken production for meat there is a fair amount of information on that topic. If you are into chickens primarily for egg production (which is most of us) you'll need to figure out how to adapt the use for that purpose. This will involve implementing a nesting area and exterior access door into the design to collect the eggs. This is not a huge deal for the creative, mechanical types but might be an issue for some.
The book is extremely redundant and reads like a babbling person talking in circles. Cloudy, the information is sometimes conflicting and lacking in sufficient detail. The author would have done well to hire true professionals to organize/edit the content and draw the diagrams.
I have built and currently use 5 chicken tractors. The author suggests that you can build these things for less than the cost of lunch by using scrap materials. In my experience most folks would very hardpressed to find the materials needed for free. If you buy all of the materials needed they cost around $100 each.
Two people can build 2 of these in about 7 hours if they have only a smidgen of experience with tools/carpentry. Building one takes about 4-5 hours.
A few notes from my experiences working with chicken tractors:
1. I have used 3' tall chicken tractors for piglets (up to 4 months of age) with excellent results by wrapping the chicken tractor with a stronger gauge wire than typical chicken wire. The pigs root a large hole every day. When I move the "pig tractor" I rake their poop into the hole then rake the soil back into the hole covering the poop. This eliminates 95% of the odor and, of course, fertilizes my garden.
2. This method does not work well for waterfowl unless you have sandy or other soil that drains very quickly. On my farm in the NC mountains, confined ducks and geese immediately create a muddy mess unless there is a drainage system in place under the waterer. Drainage systems are not practical for chicken tractoring.
3. Chicken tractors work great for chickens, turkeys, and guineas. Birds raised in a chicken tractor will produce more eggs and be much more content living in this type of environment than those accustomed to ranging.
4. The author states that the chicken tractor protects poultry from predators. In reality this structure offers little protection from anything other than birds of prey and dogs. I have lost plenty of chicken tractored poultry to fox, oppossums and raccoons. Keep a baited live trap next to your birds or plan to camp out with them every night.
Hope this helps...
Good luck and good farming!
buy or borrow -- lots of good information.......2006-02-27
Because of the reviews I read here, I didn't buy this book when I bought Salatin's Pastured Poutry Profits, now I wish I had. It has a lot of good information and is entertaining to read. I borrowed from the library and am considering buying one for our home library in the future. Andy Lee gives you some good examples in both the NE and NC of how he has raised chickens, for meat and eggs. He has a good background with lots of hand-on experience. He does this for his own food and for some money, these are not just pet "no kill" animals. I found the most interesting part to be his ideas on using a greenhouse to start chicks on the ground in hay under the benches in the spring, then after moving the birds out to tractors, making your greenhouse into a naturally fertized and mulched bed for summer vegetables followed by a fall brooder for another crop of egg laying hens that can overwinter there. He moves his greenhouses and tractors, leaving behind beautifully fertilzed mulched garden beds, that's the most exciting thing for me -- my wrists and arms hurt when I dig with a shovel! He also gives a good idea of costs, of course you may need to adjust for the year and place you live, but it does give a good basic plan to follow. If you want to know how exactly how to build a chicken tractor, follow the basic plans and get some wood and nails and tools and try to do it! They are good enough if you have common sense and want to use what you have on hand or can scrounge up! I gave this only 4 stars (it would be 4-1/2 if I could) just because everyone needs room for improvement, but that's the highest rating I usually ever give. Best of luck to everyone with their farming enterprises, we need to step away from Walmart and the rest!
Very good for the suburban gardener.......2004-05-07
I originally got some chickens because Martha Stewart said they love to eat crickets and here in the desert we have quite a problem with crickets. I found out that chickens are wonderful pets, not much trouble, very friendly and they have personalities. And they really eat bugs - best pest control you can have. I read this book on the concept of the chicken tractor and realized for the suburban gardener this is ideal. Hens eat bugs, grain, and vegetable scraps from the kitchen. Hens are great little composters, and they eat weed seeds and pests up to and including scorpions and baby mice and snakes. They don't need much except food and water, and protection from predators. We allow ours to roam a fenced in yard freely, and pen them up at night. This is a useful book if you just want a few hens and want to improve your soil (we don't move our hens around, once a year we take 4 inches off the soil in their yard and spread it around our trees and gardens.) The eggs are great - I like giving green eggs to little kids because they all have read Dr. Seuss. This book isn't for someone who is more interested in egg-laying or meat production on a large scale. And, by the way, we don't eat our hens. We are running a chicken retirement home - they don't lay eggs any more, but they still till, compost, eat weed seeds, and control pests.
has good concepts, but the steps and details are off.......2003-09-07
I used this book for some research and experiment ideas in agriculture. while it has some great general ideas and concepts, i found that the entire instructions for building the chicken tractor were lacking in detail and had conflicting drawings and steps. some required materials were not listed, and the process was vague. in reading the book, it seemed to me like a great book idea, but was very hastily presented and lacked thorough attention to detail. it looked very "thrown together". it is a book i recommend checking out from a library if you want some ideas, but i wouldn't waste my money purchasing it in hopes of practical steps for a chicken tractor. (the book might give inspiration, but YOU will have to come up with the practical details of trying and experimenting to build your tractor.) hint...lightweight and portable materials and use creativity to adapt their basic (and vaguely presented) tractor
Fine book for right audience.......2001-08-11
amrdmr is worried about the wrong things. We don't raise chickens for pets. Why read this book if you have no plans to butcher you chickens some day. There aren't many old chicken homes.
The purpose of this book was to introduce you to the benefits of pastured poultry and give you a host of ideas. True, it didn't get specific enough when I wanted to implement one of the ideas. But then, the book would have been the size of an encyclopedia.
It was a great introduction book. There are very few that do as good a job.

Geared towards Engineers.......2007-02-02
The book would be of great value in the design and engineering of cranes and derricks, but is a little cumbersome and is of little use to the men and women in the field who must use this equipment on a day to day basis. I had planned to use it as an educational resource to teach construction site personnel on the general use and safety of cranes, but it was not written for this purpose.
The new, new testament.......2006-07-24
This book is a must have for anyone in the crane industry, I train crane operators and the information is an invaluable resource which covers all aspects of cranage. It is well set out and concise, it covers everthing from basic safety principles through to complex engineering solutions. Save yourself some money in the long run by owning this book & teaching your operators and planners from the lessons learned by these guys. Your equipment will be preserved & costly mishaps will be avoided.
Excellent-.......2002-08-06
Good overall technical writting,
lots of fully worked mathematical
examples. Only book like it available
in print today.
Excellent, authoritative text on the subject.......1998-06-18
Well written, using language easily understood by the average technical reader with an interest in the field ( unlike many engineering tomes in my experience ). Also unlike many texts, proofreading and editing are skilled and thorough. Shapiro ackowledges in the preface to the first edition the roles of his co-author sons as "militant proponents of the clearly expressed thought". The success of that effort is obvious.
A very balanced presentation with generous references to actual experience, practical examples, some theory, and lots of photos and illustrations. The authors' subtle humor makes the normally dry genre very readable.
I was disappointed learning it is currently out of print and am hopeful of a future reprinting so I won't have to keep borrowing my boss' copy !
The best book around for a details on cranes& planning lifts.......1996-07-15
I found this book most informative towards my work on heavy lift planning.
It discusses in depth various aspects of lift planning and crane selection.
However, a more detailed discussion on planning on congested sites would have
been useful

Excellent truck bible.......2007-10-03
This has got to be one of the best books written about trucks and trucking that i have ever read. It is packed with information that will help everyone from people thinking about becoming a truck driver right up to expirenced drivers who would just like to keep the book handy to refer to. Almost everything you need to know is in here , from gearbox types and mechanical information throught to driver hours.
A great book packed with valuable information, that will really help to get any new drivers trucking career off to a great start.
Great information in one stop........2007-08-01
So you want to be a PTD (professional truck driver),well this is your first step into the drivers seat.
This is THE "Tractor-Trailer Bible"........2007-05-25
It is about impossible in my mind (with 13 years of driving experience) to come up with a better book that covers EVERYTHING from the most basic to complex In my opinion, this book should be used by all Motor Carriers and have their "future operators" read and PASS all the tests this book offers. If that was posible everyones insurance rates would go down (less acidents nationwide) and mechanical costs for carriers would dimish also. Spectacular book and easy reading, and as I said previously with 13 years experience I still read this book.
By far the most thorough resource on the subject.......2005-04-02
This is an excellent book for both the new guy and the veteran. At almost 500 pages, this is a very practical book that covers every aspect of truck driving and life on the road. In addition to basic operations, there is also plenty of detailed mechanical info on the inner workings of a truck. That will probably be of more interest to owner-operators than company drivers but it's good to know it's there in case you ever need it. My only complaint is that this book wasn't around when I started out. It definitely would've made for a much smoother transition into the 'industry'. Highly reccomended.
Great book for future Driver.......2004-03-09
If you have never driven a tractor trailer this is a great book. It covers everything from a drivers perspective. The truck itself including: Engines, Transmissions, Parts, Driving techniques, Hazmat, Airbrakes, Life on the road etc. What it does not cover in great detail is if you want to start your own trucking company, or authority. It touches on parts and mentions the D.O.T and FMCSR but mostly from the drivers interaction with those agencies, not as a trucking company. This book is for drivers behind the wheel on a day to day basis. Non-drivers will find it useful and insightful but if you are wishing to start your own company, It does not cover in detail the authorities you will need and actual details involved in doing so. The book never claims it does cover that information... this review is to let you know what is not in there in that regard. As a future driver, or someone interested in the actual day to day operations or the skills needed to operate a tractor trailer, this book is great and worthy of 5 stars.

Well remembered stories.......2004-07-19
While I do not have this *exact* edition of the Botts stories, I am happy to say I do have a 1962 "Best Of Botts" edition published by Pocket Books, New York. My late father was a salesman in the oil industry, and it is his battered copy I have in front of me now, having just unpacked the cartons of his possessions from his bequest to me. His experiences selling pumps, pipes and steel around the world were never as comic as those of the Ace Sales Manager for Earthworm, but he felt they were sufficiently relevant, and he re-read his paperback edition until it was ragged. Botts was one of his greatest pleasures, and as a small boy I read these stories too, and was delighted. Having just re-opened the book after thirty years, these stories are still delightful for their simplicity and humour. I love the Botts series, and I recommend any of the books to all readers who read shorts for fun.
Incredibly funny.......2001-06-18
It's hard to believe that we have such an excellently funny book like this one. It's been written long time ago. Though it's still fun to read. This is a story about a saleman who believe that he is the best one in the world. He try to solve all the problem with his own exceptional way which it's seem to be very absurd. But it works and it's very funny. I always say that it's funny because it really is.
The format of the book is like a collection of letters between Botts and his boss name Henderson. It captured me from the very first letter that Botts wrote to apply the job (I tell you that this is one of the most unique application letter). This is easy to read and don't take too long to finish.
I highly recommend this book to everyone. This is the book that will bring you joy and make you laugh. The book that will take away all tension and force you to smile with Mr Botts : The best saleman in the world.
PS. I write this review based on this book in Thai version which is still available in Thailand. For English version I didn't see any except from Library
This is a very funny book about A. Botts salesman.......1999-11-15
I read these stories as a child in the 50's and 60's in theSaturday Evening Post. I ordered this collection and they are funnierthan I remembered them. Since I got the book in June of 1999, about 10 friends have read the book and all loved it. Many people will start laughing out loud. One of the best series of short stories I have ever read. If you read this book, let me know what you think.
Timeless humor!.......1998-11-26
This collection of short stories brings the ties of the past to the situations of today. Nothing changes. Alexander Botts is the greatest salesman in the world and a sure fire winner for all readers.

A great guide by example.......2007-09-09
For those that are looking for an A-B-C, follow the list type guide to finding cheap land, keep on looking. Though there is a list of the steps used, it takes only a couple of pages near the end. If you are too lazy to read the rest, and instead skip to the list, you will miss out on a lot of good advice.
Now for the rest of you that are smart enough to enjoy Mr. Turner's tale of how he found it, and glean the tidbits of information bestowed throughout the tale, you will walk away with invaluable information that will let you find the land that you want at a price you can afford.
Well written and easily read.......2007-04-30
This book is an excellent and quick read- I finished it in one day. Although not directly suited to my purpose, the book contains great advice on finding a small acreage (4-12) property in the country.
Most of all the book made me feel even better about our opportunities- as the writer repeatedly commented on how much easier his search would have been if he was looking to buy 40 or more acres of land. Wouldn't you know it, that is what we are looking to do.
The author has a flowing and folksy writing style, that doesn't get bogged down with too much technical real estate jargon- and footnotes are provided in the rare instances where technical terms occur. This book is in many ways much more than a book about how to buy property cheap, it is the author's life story- his dreams and aspirations for a place in the country since his boyhood.
I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to purchase land in the country.
Low density but valuable information.......2007-02-26
The information in this book is worth the price you pay for it. I had fumbled around looking for land and only found a couple of the many tips he offers for finding and buying land. The author presents the information as his experience finding and buying a piece of land to be used as a get away and week end home. He explains why small parcels of land are more expensive per acre compared to large parcels of land.
His tips on buying land are summarized in a two page appendix. I think the one thing he left out of his summary was "get lucky and stumble across someone who will sell you land for cheap". If this was a "how to" book, it would be a pamphlet.
While not an exciting story, it is engaging. I found that I lost track of time while reading it. I have no need to be as thrifty as the author, however.
READ ME! A good argument for land.......2006-11-15
This book and another book made me re-think about land. In the past, people considered it as dangerous, but sometimes investing in land isn't such a bad thing, especially if you want to keep it for long term or for your children.
I would also suggest buying this book on how to purchase land below market value:
Investing Without Losing (ISBN: 0978834607 NOT on amazn, on other stores)
Very entertaining and lots of great ideas!!.......2006-03-14
I couldn't put this book down after I started it. A quick entertaining read, it was exactly what I was looking for! We just bought 7.5 acres of rural undeveloped mountain land ourselves, and are in the midst of learning more about how to prepare it for use. I had such a great time reading this book because it matched what we are doing exactly, from searching with plat maps and using aerial photos (as we did to find our property), to figuring out what's the best type of structure to put onto the land to be able to go out and enjoy it. I love the escapades about the tractor too, and the ending is just great! You won't be disappointed.

This old-fashioned tale about one little snowplow's determination in the face of a small-town blizzard has all the charm and moral grit of The Little Engine That Could. This isn't surprising, considering that Caldecott Medal-winning author Virginia Lee Burton (The Little House) specializes in bringing the inanimate to life with endearing illustrations and stories of fortitude and vulnerability. Katy, a red crawler tractor, "could do a lot of things," Burton explains early on. In the summer she is a bulldozer, helping to build and repair roads in the city of Geoppolis. In the winter, she turns into a snowplow, waiting and waiting for her chance to be useful. Most of the winters, though, the snowfalls are mild and the town doesn't need Katy. But when the big one finally hits, the town is buried in page after page of powder. The power lines are down. The doctor can't get his patient to the hospital. The fire department can't reach a burning house! "Everyone and everything was stopped but... KATY!" Suddenly, the entire community is dependent on one little snowplow. Children love witnessing Katy's shining moment of glory and will inevitably admire her "chug, chug, chug" endurance. (Ages 4 and older) --Gail Hudson

a story for generations ..........2007-02-09
As a little girl this was my favorite book. My parents read it to me over and over. My mom saved it all these years and recently first read it to my 3 1/2 yr old nephew. He now shares my love of this story and asks Grandpa to read it to him all the time.
The story is very well written and illustrations are wonderful for little kids to follow along with.
Katy Will Not Stop!.......2006-11-24
Katy is a municipal snow plow serving a small village who is hit by a massive snow storm. Adults who think it silly that machines are made to behave like people in picture books should remember the little engine that could. Katy has no doubt that she can tackle any snow, and when a massive snow storm hits, she is called to duty. The firemen, the police, the doctors, the postmaster, and others all cry out for help from Katy. When Katy began to tire, she pressed on - she wouldn't stop. She is the heroine who saves the village.
What makes this book more than interesting is that the author is also the illustrator, which means that there is thought behind these illustrations that they should intertwine with the dramatic plot of the text. Each illustration shows the trails plowed through the snow by Katy. With each progressive illustration, the trails become more numerous and complex to where they begin to look like maps. These illustrations partner nicley with the text to produce an emerging cadence in the dialogue.
Our favorite Virginia Lee Burton Book!.......2006-03-29
We love this book, it's our absolute favorite Virginia Lee Burton book. My children always seem inspired and excited by the story of the snow plow that nothing could stop!
As always, her illustrations are marvelous (and with the more modern bright colors, it's nice to let your children enjoy the black and white palette), and the story of not giving up is a great message for children. It also makes those winter days when it seems like you'll never get out a little more hopeful.
Classic children's tale.......2006-03-16
This is of course by the same author as "Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel," and just as delightful. Appeals to girls and boys alike, and as your child grows, (s)he will find more and more in the book -- maps of the town, buildings' names, names of machine parts, and more. Strongly recommended, even for those unfamiliar with "Mike Mulligan."
Not Burton's Best - a review of "Katy and the Big Snow".......2006-01-25
I have to agree with the other 3-Star Reviewer. This is not one of Burton's best books. My children (boy and girl; almost 4 and 6) didn't care much for it. There is none of the usual clamoring for another read.
And as the other Reviewer noted, there is a lack of 'personification' for Katy. Her character just doesn't seem as rich as some of Ms. Burton's other equipment (or buildings-lol).
And plowing, followed by more plowing, is just not all that interesting even if it is helping a doctor and a mailman.
Three Stars. If you already have Ms. Burton's other books and like them, take a chance on this book. But if you are looking for a Burton-first story, try another like "Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel" or even "The Little House."
