Book Description
The third edition of Adult Learning Methods, with revisions, updates, and six new chapters, provides the educator of adults with ways to understand and facilitate adult learning. It is a clearly written guide to understanding the complex aspects associated with techniques and methods of the teaching and learning encounter. The book is comprised of two parts. Part One, "Understanding and Facilitating Adult Learning," contains 8 chapters that examine such topics as characteristics of a good teacher, understanding adults as learners, philosophical and teaching style orientations, designing instruction, motivation strategies, and ethical reasoning. Part Two, "Methods and Techniques," contains 14 chapters that describe in detail an array of methods and techniques to use in the classroom. The topics include selecting methods and techniques, case story, discussion, lecture, interactive television, distance learning methods, learning contracts, course portfolio, critical thinking techniques, demonstration, simulation, case study, forum, panel, symposium, mentoring, and learning communities in cyberspace. Adult Learning Methods is designed for the practitioner and is written from a practical "how-to" perspective. Its premise is that by acquiring a greater understanding of the process of helping adults learn and the methods that can enhance this process, teachers and adult learners can increase their chances of sharing a positive, meaningful, and developing educational experience.

A 'must-read' for all adult educators.......2005-10-20
Being fairly new to the community of adult educators, I find myself continually searching for works that might help me to become a more effective facilitator. In this regard, Galbraith has quickly evolved into one of my favorite authors/editors in the field of adult learning. I found this book to be very practitioner-oriented, scholarly yet not over-technical and well researched. I highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to develop a greater understanding of adult learners and instructional strategies that are, indeed, effective.
An anthology of useful essays.......2004-02-09
Now in its third edition with revisions, updates, and six new chapters, Adult Learning Methods: A Guide For Effective Instruction compiled and edited by Michael W. Galbraith is an anthology of useful essays by experienced educators and filled from cover to cover with tips, tricks, and techniques for instructors in adult learning classrooms. General enough to apply to all walks of adult instruction ranging from literacy to apprenticeship to community college to advanced schooling, the contributory essays comprising Adult Learning Methods focus especially on assimilating general principles and tested techniques to facilitate learning and is very highly recommended reading for anyone charged with the task of educating adults.
An Excellent Book for Teachers of Adult Education.......1999-02-16
Michael Galbraith has done an outstanding job of compiling written work by several noted authors and making it available in one book. Rita Kolody focuses on Guidelines for Selecting Methods and Techniques. Gary Conti has written an excellent chapter on Identifying Your Teaching Style. Stephen Brookfield's focus in on Discussion. Shirley Farrah spotlights the Lecture. Internship is covered by Susan B. Fremont and Mentorship is covered by Laurnet A. Parks Daloz. Many other authors have contributed equally outstanding chapters. A major theme of this book is understanding the adult learner. Psychological characteristics are explored as well as cognitive and personality characteristics of the adult learner. The chapters are well written, easily understood, and references are documented. Upon reading this book, the teacher can utilize the knowledge from each contributing author and make an informed selection of which method and technique may have the greatest chance of professional satisfaction for success for the learners. The information in this book is thought-provoking and stimulating for any teacher who desires to improve his/her own teaching-learning transaction.

Interested in VCoPs? Buy this book!.......2006-05-29
This book is methodologically sound AND useful. Suggestions and advices are backed up by literature, it's not just the usual collection of "expert opinions". By the same token, suggestions and advices are sound and practical, not just impractical "erudite hypotheses". Perfect for pracademics!
It applies to virtual communities of practice.......2003-08-28
The material in this book can be applied to increase the productivity of virtual communities of practice. It is a book I recommend to those who make a living in the world of knowledge management.
Everything you need to consider for asynchronous learning.......2001-07-22
I have found this book to be very helpful if you are REALLY interested in doing asynchronous work online. The authors are leading edge thinkers about this subject who have earned themselves a place in the world consulting to people who want to do this. The problem is that many, many people only THINK they know what asynchronous learning is and until you actually experience it you won't know. Can't know something until you learn it. Rena and Keith have done a very good job of showing you EVERYTHING you need to know to get the job done. You can use it like a menu, take what you want and leave the rest alone. They spend a good deal of time trying to get people to understand the TRUE nature of an asynchronous world. They are sincerely at the leading edge. I think I know what leading edge is, I think I'm there experiencing true asynchronous learning now at the renowned Fielding Institute. Good book for your reference. You may not need all of it NOW but you will soon!
Big Mac of a book: high calories--low nutrition.......2001-07-13
This book is indeed 'pedagogically sound'; the trouble is: it likes the sound of its own voice, far too much, and plods on around the houses for far too long. It is a Big Mac of a book: high calories--low nutrition. I wasted money buying it, don't you make the same mistake. Buy something shorter, less cack-handed, and trendy.
Learning Communities and Cyberspace.......2001-05-17
The advice given in this books should not be limited to cyberspace. The examples, experiences, and education this book provides are applicable to both the classroom and cyberspace. Learning should not be a one way avenue from master to student, but a dialogue. This book is a stepping stone for learning in the information age.

Understanding and Facilitating Adult Learning.......2000-10-02
A thoroughly researched and extensively documented book which efficiently outlines 20 years of studies on adult learning. Effective adulte learning practices are explained in from six categories, voluntary engagement, respect among participants, collaboration and negaotiation of needs, relective praxis, critical appreciation of diversity, and student empowerment of self improvement. Aside from the institutional mode of learning, external authority, set objectives, set teaching roles, prescribed evaluation, adult learning seeks to empower self directed learners with critical thinking modes. This latter kind of learning is not without risk. The risks of dillusion, professional incompetence, and the perils of playing close to a kind of classroom therapy. Nonetheless, adult students bring a wealth of experience (good and bad), maturity, problem posing, problem solving, and task focus to adult learning. Finally, adult learning will invariably be restricted by institutional contexts, evalution criteria, and contextual business norms.

Book Description
Effective Grading is written for the faculty member who believes the grading process is a valuable measure of student learning. This hands-on guide for evaluating student work offers an in-depth examination of the linkage between teaching and grading. It uses grades not as isolated artifacts, but as part of a process that, when integrated with course objectives, provides rich information about student learning. The authors reveal how the grading process can also be used for broader assessment objectives, such as curriculum and institutional assessment.
As practical as it is informative, Effective Grading contains a wealth of special materials, including AAHE's Principles of Good Practice for Assessing Student Learning, types of assignments and tests, and a plan for a faculty workshop on grading and assessment. In addition, the book provides background to the principles of the grading process as well as a wealth of illustrative examples, offering faculty both a sound basis in assessment theory and the practical tools they need to put it to work.

Almost a Grade-A Guide to Grading.......2007-06-06
While it may not seem like it to students, grading is a very complex exercise for teachers and instructors. Anyone hoping to go into that line of work will have to learn about how complex and uncertain the art of grading can be, and this book is a strong compendium of current theory on such matters. An especially valuable aspect of this book is its coverage of the different schools of thought on whether grading is really an accurate assessment tool at all, and how all parties in the education process (students, teachers, administrators, parents, employers) have different conceptions of the usefulness and value of grades. But while this book is hugely informative at the practical level, beware of a few larger theoretical weaknesses. Frequently, certain practices that are currently held in high esteem become overused examples of larger concepts. The most glaring example is the inaccurately-titled chapter "Establishing Criteria and Standards for Grading" which is entirely about just one method, Primary Trait Analysis. At a higher level, this book assumes that all instructors will have the privilege of smaller class sizes, or welcoming administrative environments, in which experimenting with grading methods is possible or practical at all. Meanwhile this book (and many others like it) fails to distinguish between future advancements in theory and the real world in which such theories and practices have yet to be implemented on any appreciable scale. Good resource.......2007-05-22
A good resource for faculty. Well written with nice integrated examples. I always recommend this book to faculty looking to develop rubrics for their teaching.
A book every teacher should read.......2000-08-03
Do you love to teach but hate the grading process? That's where I was when I picked up this book. Very practically written, "Effective Grading" shows you how to choose the proper grading model for a class, how to motivate students through properly communicating your grading system, and how to structure your assignments to increase student learning. All this while drastically reducing the amount of time you need to spend on grading papers. Within a week of reading this book, I've made some drastic changes in my courses which will benefit both my students and myself.
Excellent resource for college teachers.......2000-06-20
I admit I was skeptical when I started this book--so many pedagogically oriented texts seem to sacrifice content and standards for "feel-good" solutions to education. However, I have found this book to offer excellent suggestions for every aspect of structuring classes to teach and evaluate what you most want your students to learn. In my college English classes, I've used variations of Primary Trait Analyses and Gateway Criteria and they have made a big difference in the levels of thinking and writing in my own students. Giving students specific guidelines allows them to focus on what's important about the assignment, set their priorities appropriately, and makes things much easier for me when the time comes for grading. I highly recommend this book.

buying my second copy . . ........2000-07-14
I am working with middle and high school students who have reading problems. This book includes several approaches to reading instruction, and itself becomes a workbook for the student. It is organized well and does not "talk down" to students by using "less than" adult content. I am finding it useful, and it inspires ideas of my own to try as well. My expertise on phonics, word roots, reading comprehension is broad, but not stellar. Still, most of what Wilf presents squares with my knowledge, unlike some instructional books which have information that is simplistic, or just plain wrong. At the same time I read this book, I was reading Moustafa's Beyond Traditional Phonics. Although Moustafa is talking about reading instruction with young students, the two books in tandem gave me a nice balance for developing my ideas.

A whole new way to view ADD.......2006-02-21
It's about learning how to become "centered and grounded." Eliminates the chaos of ADD.
ADD can be overcome........2000-07-27
Fellow ADDers. First step is to recovery is to admit that you have a problem. In this wonderful book Debroitner et al say that ADD can be overcome, can be cured, by the basic fundamental techniques of good living, healthy eating, correct breathing, excercise and meditation- without drugs. The key is to get in touch with your soul. I am an adult and have a severe case of ADD, and in stressful situations, my attention span can be measured in seconds, but by remembering to follow some of the techniques outlined in the book, ( such as "Jet Knees") I could control my impulses considerably. This is a great book. Read it. Use it.
Understanding ADD.......1999-08-19
When this book was first brought to my attention I seiously doubted that it would help me at all. I was very wrong. It is an excellent book for anyone that has suffered with ADD or knows someone that has. It is very informative for parents of an ADD child. For me as an adult it has helped me tremendously in understanding myself and finding myself so I can move forward in life

Customer Reviews:
A Must Read for Distance Learning Professionals.......2007-07-30
This is quite simply one the best books on distance learning that I have read. Palloff and Pratt provide a well researched investigation into developing communities online.
The first part of the book goes to great length in defining distance learning and community. The authors provide both empirical and anecdotal evidence to support their claim that community building online is critical to distance learning success. They do a wonderful job stepping the reader through the psychological process of developing an online community and detailing the impact it can have on learning.
Their approach to instructional design moves the instructor into a collaborative and transformative learning model that places students at the center. Instructors become facilitators guiding student discussion and exploration. This stands in stark contrast to the chalk and talk lecture model that many instructors attempt to replicate in distance learning.
Part two of the book is a hands-on guide to best practices for building online learning communities. It covers everything from initial course design and maintaining a collaborative environment to student and course evaluation.
If you are involved in distance learning and online training... I would strongly recommend this book. It was published in July 2007 and is very up-to-date with references to blogging, wikis and social networks like Facebook and My Space. It's a great read a wonderful reference.

An Early Childhood Parent Involvement Book For Special Needs Children.......2006-04-24
I stumbled across this book via a professor. Thank God I found it, for it fits neatly into a niche of early childhood education (the early childhood special educator)that needs fresh blood.
Those familar with IDEA and its pieces will find nothing new about it albeit different words for the same explanation; however, the parent involvement angle will inform. I especially liked the section on educational support services. Many teachers will find that they lack the very basic knowledge to direct parents of special needs children to the correct resources that they themselves cannot provide.
So many superlatives this book due to its niche-filling nature exist that I cannot mention them all. I recommend this book with respectable poise.
