Customer Reviews:
DIGITAL System on a Chip, Not ANALOG.......2003-02-28
This may be the world's most complete over view of digital system-on-a-chip verification. I don't know.
I was excited to find a book on this subject, because this is a specialized subject not covered well by the publishing industry, because this is a subject that is very difficult to write about, with only perhaps a few tens of thousands of active specialists, and because of these quotations from the book's back cover "[fully covers] system on a chip," "Bluetooth because it addresses reality," "comprehensive guide to overall SOC verification," "authors... leave no stone unturned in this comprehensive overview of [chip verification] tools and methodolgies."
Now that I have received the book, I feel that it is important to make note of what I know this book is not. It is not a book with any significant coverage of analog.
I am an analog chip designer that has 24 years experience, a good part of that time spent verifying my analog and mixed-signal designs. This book has a single 24 page chapter on analog, "Analog/Mixed-Signal Simulation," which taught me nothing. The chapter lists and defines the standard specialized nomenclature of the analog verification software, gives an example simple VerilogA behavioral model for a crude resistor-transresistor DAC, and gives a crude behavioral test example. I think that most all stones are left unturned for analog or mixed-signal chip verification. The authors mention SPICE, spectre, and Cadence Analog Design Environment only. I just finished a 37000 transistor analog & mixed-signal chip verification, and this book mentioned none of the tools and methods that I used, which included Mentor's Modeltech Modelsim and Synopsys's Saber. The examples are of value in giving existing digital chip verification experts an example of how to get started with a crude VerilogA behavioural modeling of analog blocks to be fit into a digital chip verification flow.
All of the authors are or were associated with Cadence Design Systems, according to the book. They write "The [EDA software] industry has been slow in responding to the mixed-signal design and simulation requirements." "Analog engineers have been using [SPICE] for analog simulation for over 30 years..." "The third VSIA verification meeting concluded 'verification is not just very hard, it is very, very hard.'" I agree, but there is still much left to write about. I congratulate them on being some of the first to attempt such a writing task.
Poor examples explanation.......2002-11-09
I am not an expert in this field but what I learn are just some simple concepts. It takes some pages on the bluetooth SOC design
example with fractional C code. There is no structure about the examples and its hard to understand what the authors will explain(actually, I just feel ??what??)

Book Description
Imagine scientists controlling the transmission of certain diseases through the genetic modification of mosquitoes. Eradicating harmful insects without the use of pesticides. Or increasing the fertility of some insects who in turn eat harmful arthropods or even a plant pathogen. Those are just a few of the real-world applications of insect transgenesis, which offers substantial benefits to humankind-whether it be in improving agricultural productivity or reducing the spread of insect-vectored diseases. Insect Transgenesis: Methods and Applications is the first publication to describe in a comprehensive manner the various methodologies available, possible applications, and the risk assessment and regulatory issues involved in this fascinating area of research. Divided into several areas of interest, the book starts with an overview of the history and methodology of insect gene transfer. The book then examines gene targeting by homologous recombination and recombination systems, and systems for transgenic selection, including visible eye color markers, chemical resistance, and fluorescent proteins. Other sections consider the use of various vector systems to integrate DNA into a host genome or to express foreign genes in a host organism. The work concludes with strategies for the use of transgenic insects, including examples for agricultural pests and vectors of disease. Of particular interest are the final chapters that discuss risk assessment considerations and governmental regulatory procedures for the transport and release of transgenic insects.

A detailed overview of transgenic strategies in insects........2004-05-03
This book gives a useful and fascinating overview of the status of transgenic strategies in insects as it was known in the year 2000. Written by experts in the field, it will introduce both biologists and non-biologists to many of the techniques used for the introduction of transgenes in insects. Readers are expected to have a fairly strong background in molecular genetics, but it could still be profitably read by anyone who is curious about this exciting technology. Due to space constraints, only a few of the articles will be reviewed here.
The first article gives a historical introduction to gene transfer in insects. The P-Element transformation was the first transposon-based system for transforming the germline in D. melanogaster efficiently and stably. This transposon is an example of the Class II short inverted terminal repeat transposons, and its high mobility made it a successful for Drosophila transformation. The P vector however was not successful in non-drosophilid insects, and therefore other choices for vector-mediated transfer were researched. Some of these are discussed in this article, such as the hobo transposon, Hermes, Minos (first to successfully transform a non-drosophilid, the medfly), piggyBac (second successful transformation agent in medflies), and the mariner element. Approaches to creating transient systems, employing viral and symbiont vectors, are also discussed.
In article 7, pantropic retroviral vectors for gene transfer in insects are discussed. These arose from the genetic modification of the Moloney murine leukemia virus in order that it contain the G envelope protein from the vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV-G). These vectors are considered to be stable once inserted into the genome and are incapable of self-propagation. Most importantly, these vectors are now extensively used for human gene therapy protocols. The somatic infection of larvae using these vectors has been accomplished in D. melanogaster, Aedes triseriatus, Culex tarsalis (the western encephalitis mosquito), Anopholes gambiae (the malaria mosquito), and Manduca sexta (the tobacco hawkmoth).
Article 8 overviews densonucleosis viruses as transducing systems for insects. These viruses are linear single-stranded DNA molecules between 4000 and 6000 nucleotides in length that it seems are restricted to arthropods. The primary application of these vectors has been to deliver genes into mosquitoes for the laboratory study of gene expression. It is hoped that they will be instrumental in control programs against mosquitoes. These viruses have a limited host range however, being restricted to the Aedes, Culex, and Culiseta mosquitoes. They are also considered to be limited in scope as gene-transfer vectors due to their small genome size and due to their (icosahedral) shape.
In the ninth article, RNA virus expression systems based on the Sindbis virus for efficiently transducing mosquito cells and allowing stable gene expression in various species of mosquitos, such as the yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti), the eastern treehole mosquito (Aedes triseriatus), the northern house mosquito (Culex pipiens), and Anopholes gambiae, are discsussed. The Sindbis virus is an alphavirus, with a single-stranded RNA genome. The article discusses the protein expression in the saliva of Culex pipiens, in the midgut of Aedes aegypti, and the expression of antiviral RNAs in Aedes aegypti and Aedes triseriatus.
In article 11, the role of polydnaviruses in insect transgenic strategies is discussed. These viruses are multisegmented DNA viruses that are found exclusively in the female reproductive tracts of some wasps. Segmentation in the polydnavirus genomes is thought to have evolved in order to increase the copy number of essential viral genes. They are known to integrate stably into the chromosomal DNA of the cell line of a gypsy moth, and to infect and integrate in lepidopteran and coleopteran cell cultures. They are apparently difficult to engineer however, and but the author of the article believes that their impact may lie in pointing the way to other methods for performing transgenesis.
Article 12 discusses the Hermes vector for transforming insects other than D. melanogaster. First discovered in M. domestica (the common housefly), cell lines of Anopheles gambiae were stably transformed by Hermes, and Hermes has been transposed in the embryos of Aedes aegypti. It is described in the article as having a wide host range, with accurate transposition occurring in twelve species of insects.
In article 13, the genetic engineering of insects with mariner transposons is discussed, The mariner element was first isolated from Drosophila mauritiana, and the mariner family of transposons is known to be widespread in animal genomes. This has caused some to be concerned about the risks involved for active mariners released in insect control programs could invade other genomes, such as human genomes. The article describes the evidence of recent and ancient horizontal gene transfers between animal hosts as being "overwhelming." The authors of the article though believe that one should not be concerned about releasing transgenic insects created with mariners into the environment. They give several reasons for not being concerned, one being that when nonautonomous mariners are used using a transient transposase, the resultant transformants are stable. In addition, the timescales involved are too long for horizontal gene transfer to be a significant risk, with over 100, 000 years being quoted as the most recent event for its occurrence. Only two mariner elements have invaded the human genome in the last 100 million years.
In the fourteenth article, the tagalong (TFP3) and piggyBac elements, both transposable elements of the TTAA-specific family, are reviewed in regards to their utility in the transformation of insects. The piggyBac element was first isolated from a nucleopolyhedrosis virus which infects cell cultures of the cabbage looper moth (Trichoplusia ni). The authors discusses several successful piggyBac transformations, such as in D. melanogaster, Aedes aegypti, Anopholes Gambiae, Bombyx mori (the domestic silk moth), Pectinophora gossypiella (the pink bollworm), and Tribolium castaneum (the red flour beetle). The horizontal transmission of piggyBac among species is considered to be a viable possibility for the authors, and they therefore devote a section to the safety concerns involved with the release of transgenic insects.

Book Description
Embedded core processors are becoming a vital part of today's system-on-a-chip in the growing areas of telecommunications, multimedia and consumer electronics. This is mainly in response to a need to track evolving standards with the flexibility of embedded software. Consequently, maintaining the high product performance and low product cost requires a careful design of the processor tuned to the application domain. With the increased presence of instruction-set processors, retargetable software compilation techniques are critical, not only for improving engineering productivity, but to allow designers to explore the architectural possibilities for the application domain.
Retargetable Compilers for Embedded Core Processors, with a Foreword written by Ahmed Jerraya and Pierre Paulin, overviews the techniques of modern retargetable compilers and shows the application of practical techniques to embedded instruction-set processors. The methods are highlighted with examples from industry processors used in products for multimedia, telecommunications, and consumer electronics. An emphasis is given to the methodology and experience gained in applying two different retargetable compiler approaches in industrial settings. The book also discusses many pragmatic areas such as language support, source code abstraction levels, validation strategies, and source-level debugging. In addition, new compiler techniques are described which support address generation for DSP architecture trends. The contribution is an address calculation transformation based on an architectural model.
Retargetable Compilers for Embedded Core Processors will be of interest to embedded system designers and programmers, the developers of electronic design automation (EDA) tools for embedded systems, and researchers in hardware/software co-design.

Wonderful intro to networking.......2001-05-07
This book provided me with much more knowledge than I expected when I bought it. It covers networking and internet basics and explains technologies such as TCP, IP, and UDP for a beginner a well as the various networking tools provided by LabVIEW in detail. It is a perfect mix of background and general info with LabVIEW detail. This is definitely a great book to get into networked apps with.
An Excellent and Compact source of information.......2000-08-10
With 10+ years of LabVIEW programming experience I found Jeff's book to be an excellent and compact source of internet and network applications in LabVIEW. The background was excellent and not overly in depth. The sample programs on the CD consumed hours of my time examining all the great examples it contained. My copy is littered with underlines, highlights and post-it notes marking the good spots! (he should have simply printed the pages in yellow paper!)
For LabVIEW programmers it's an excellent timesaver for internet info and apps in LabVIEW.
A Must have for Network and Internet LabVIEW Coders.......2000-08-10
With 10+ years programming in LabVIEW this book was very useful and on the mark with explaining internet technologies. Well worth the money in time you'd spend looking for this info all over the net.
I needed to control my labview vis over the web.......2000-08-04
this book is dense and packed with more information than you probably will use, but i gave it five stars because it does have everything you need, theory and examples, for controlling your vis over the web. you learn to use java and activex, step-by-step.
with the software and examples in this book, i was able to set up a web browser control of my chemistry lab.
Clears up many questions about Internet technology.......2000-08-04
This book filled in the gap for me on many questions I had about Web servers, security, Web pages, etc. Great resource.

Customer Reviews:
Practical Text.......2002-01-29
As an ASIC designer I found this to be useful when doing synthesis work. If you are experienced in synthesis, synopsys online documentation and personal notes may prove as useful. I simply liked this text. The price is really not that far out of norm for technical books such as this one.
very general; very short; and way over priced.......2001-05-16
This book is very general even to readers who are unfamiliar with the topic. It is a waste of money. It is extremely short, I read the whole book in one day. It has bits and pieces here and there, but no fundamentals. This book is not useful, even to starters.
very general; very short; not worth the money.......2001-05-16
This book is extremely general. Even for readers who do not want to practice synthesis or timing analysis. It gives very few minor examples. It is not worth the money. I finished reading the book in 1 day. The information in this book is so shallow. I wasted my money. If you have access to the synopsys tools, it is much better to read the tools user guide.
Advanced Asic Chip Synthesis: Using Synopsys Design Compiler.......2001-02-17
This book offers nothing extra from Synopsys On-Line Documentation. It is simply over overpriced.
Highly overpriced, bad English, poor typeset.......2001-02-15
I got turned off from this book the moment I opened it, and before I even read a single line. It has huge font size (even larger, instead of smaller, for example scripts) and one-inch margins on top and bottom. (An O'Reilly book has 40% more information on same-sized page, and it's far easier to read.) Every other sentence contains a punctuation error. All this makes it hard to concentrate on the content.
The content itself is good for the absolute beginner, but not much else. The example scripts have no useful comments. Several important concepts (wire-load models among them) are mentioned without explanation. Other concepts (such as false paths) are explained in a misleading way.
The author may be a superb designer, but that does not automatically make him a decent writer.
Also, shouldn't editors have caught the English language errors?

Book Description
The aim of
Surviving the SOC Revolution: A Guide to Platform-Based
Design is to provide the engineering community with a thorough understanding of the challenges involved when moving to system-on-a-chip and deliver a step-by-step methodology to get them there.
Design reuse is most effective in reducing the cost and development time when the components to be shared are close to the final implementation. On the other hand, it is not always possible or desirable to share designs at this level, since minimal variations in specification can result in different, albeit similar, implementations. However, moving higher in abstraction can eliminate the differences among designs, so that the higher level of abstraction can be shared and only a minimal amount of work needs to be carried out to achieve final implementation.
The ultimate goal is to create a library of functions and of hardware and software implementations that can be used for all new designs. It is important to have a multilevel library, since it is often the case that the lower levels that are closer to the physical implementation change because of the advances in technology, while the higher levels tend to be stable across product versions.
It is most likely that the preferred approaches to the implementation of complex embedded systems will include the following aspects:
Design costs and time are likely to dominate the decision-making process for systems designers. Therefore, design reuse in all its shapes and forms will be of paramount importance.
Designs have to be captured at the highest level of abstraction to be able to exploit all the degrees of freedom that are available.
Next-generation systems will use a few highly complex (Moore's Law Limited) part-types, but many more energy-power-cost-efficient, medium-complexity (10M-100M) gates in 50nm technology chips, working concurrently to implement solutions to complex sensing, computing, and signaling/actuating problems.
Such chips will most likely be developed as an instance of a particular platform. That is, rather than being assembled from a collection of independently developed blocks of silicon functionality, they will be derived from a specific `family' of rnicro-architectures, possibly oriented toward a particular class of problems, that can be modified (extended or reduced) by the system developer.
These platforms will be highly programmable.
Both system and software reuse impose a design methodology that has to leverage existing implementations available at all levels of abstraction. £/LIST£
This book deals with the basic principles of a design methodology that addresses the concerns expressed above. The platform concept is carried throughout the book as a unifying theme to reuse. This is the first book that deals with the platform-based approach to the design of embedded systems and is a stepping stone for anyone who is interested in the real issues facing the design of complex systems-on-chip.
From the Preface by Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Not a comprehensive book for SOC design.......2000-09-01
The book explains the fundamentals for design and methodology of SOCs. It also addresses the design reuse concerns. However, the book does not cover practical examples of SOC design and does not explain the difference between ASICs and SOCs.
